Also, rolling 3 probably doesn't help your damage chances

RL game tonight. No time for a good post.

Surrounding by the beasts, Tharivol will move invisibly behind the wounded one. Action his collapsible shield. Bonus give inspiration to Artur. Use object to stow longbow.

Thanks for making the effort and letting us know.

However, I don't want to rush everyone so we'll wait for Kela to post.

Questions?

Game on!

Female Half-Orc (Mark of Finding) Ranger (Horizon Walker) 5

Action 1
”Now he goes the right direction” Kela muttered to herself as she turned and ran back the way she came. As she shoved her shortsword back into her sheath she repeated her earlier oath, directing it’s power towards the closest creature. With the subtle glow confirming it as her new target she released two arrows from her bow. Her arrows are true, and land deep in the back of the creature as it bears down on her friend.

Longbow Attack 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 271d8 + 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + (4) + 4 = 14
Longbow Attack 2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 261d8 + 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + (2) + 4 = 11
Critical Damage: 1d8 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + (1) = 2

Full Movement back towards Artur. Bonus Action to redirect the Hunter’s Mark. Action for two attacks (no disadvantage since Veratash hit).

Yeah, I tend to notice my misspellings and grammar mistakes after I post things, so I tend to have to go back and edit things immediately after posting a lot.

No, it really doesn't. My virtual dice luck seems just as bad as my real dice luck. In another thread I called out "Not a 1, please" before making an important roll--and got a 2 instead.

I picture Nyd as more of an ice-type than a fire based caster.

Round 4:

Sensing himself being surrounded, Artur pulled a metal disk from the side of his pack, pushed a red button on it and tossed it next to him.

the plat landed and the spun out like an iris, with legs dropping from the bottom and sections rose from the top of the plate until something resembling a spider with a cannon for a mouth.

"Fire." Artur commanded while pointing at the Displacer Beast north of him. At this command, a gout of fire exploded from the mouth of his spider.

using my turret class feature to create a flame turret and then my bonus action to command it to attack.

DC 15 Dex save: 1d8 ⇒ 7 fire damage on a failed save, and half that damage on a successful save.

M Sorcerer lvl 5 [AC13 | Saves -1 0 +5 0 +3 +7 | Per +3]

Correction on the minisheet in the document: I've already used up both my 3rd level slots.

Action 1 - Round 5:

Veratash, confident from his last attack, strikes again, aiming for both creatures. This time he is wise not to stretch his arms wide, so he stretches them forward repeating the words twofold tension and the same two beams rush out to the creatures.

Cast twinned Ray of Sickness

Attack vs beast 2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Disadvantage: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Damage: 2d8 ⇒ (7, 7) = 14

Attack vs beast 3: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Disadvantage: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Damage: 2d8 ⇒ (7, 1) = 8

Again, the strange illusion that makes the beasts fuzzy to watch didn't get in the way of Veratash's attacks. They, again, tense their muscles feeling dizzy and tired.

First Aid

Tharivol draws his ruby-hilted rapier. Unsure of the natural intelligence of these beasts, he speaks an Elven command word in a stern voice causing the beast to hear painful noise.

DC 13 Wisdom save on Beast 3: 5d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 4, 4, 1) = 18 On a failed save, it takes 18 psychic damage and must immediately use its reaction, if available, to move as far as its speed allows away from Tharivol. The creature doesn’t move into obviously dangerous ground, such as a fire or a pit. On a successful save, the target takes 9 damage and doesn’t have to move away.

Now fully visible, the Elven minstrel calls out, "Artur, didn't I warn you not to be surrounded? Won't you ever listen to my advice?"

It doesn't look like Artur used his Bardic Inspiration, so I can give him another one this round. Artur can roll a 1d8 and add the number rolled to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw it makes. The creature can wait until after it rolls the d20 before deciding to use the Bardic Inspiration die but must decide before the DM says whether the roll succeeds or fails.

Action 1
Kela followed the success of her last attack with another two arrows arcing towards the injured creatures. This time only one landed true as the creature was now aware of threat Kela still posed at a distance. She then continued to run towards to the main group.

Longbow Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 81d8 + 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + (5) + 4 = 14
Longbow Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 131d8 + 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (7) + (2) + 4 = 13

Sorry, I had to be away from my computer.

Nyd takes a moment to concentrate, and returns to his original attack method, flinging four bolts of magical force at the highly injured beast.

I am going to cast Magic Missile with a level 2 slot, with all four bolts going into the injured target. Maybe a little tactical overkill, but given how bad my dice rolls have been....

Targeting Highly Injured Beats:

Missile 1: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Missile 2: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Missile 3: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Action 1:

Veratash, seeing the creatures were making a run for it, decided not to leave his fate to chance and let them escape to come back at him. He looked at them and calmly said, moving his dragonshard to his forehead: sleepy. The beasts, weak from the wounds they had been inflicted, started to feel drowsy and laid down to take a nap.

Cast Sleep with a 2nd level slot

Total HP hit: 7d8 ⇒ (4, 5, 6, 6, 8, 2, 1) = 32

Wizard lvl 5 [HP 32/32| AC12 | Saves +1 +1 +2 +7 +4 -1 | Per +4 ] Wizard 5

Nyd is going to wait to see if the Sleep spell works before performing this action. If both creatures fall asleep, he won't cast at all. If only one does, he will only target the other. If neither do, he will target the weakest.

"The enemy force is in retreat. Should we pursue?"

Nyd takes a move action to the NE to get a little bit closer, and then casts Frostbite on the more injured of the two Beasts.

Frostbite Damage: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (5, 3) + 1 = 9
DC 15 Con save to negate the damage. If not negated, the hit Displacer Beast gets disadvantage on its next 'weapon' attack.

Artur’s Cannon

Tharivol pointed his ruby-hilted rapier at the fleeing beasts and suggested, "Time to hunt them down."

The dragonmarked elf said another Elven command word in a stern voice causing a violet explosion of light to detonate and engulfing the retreating beasts.

Faerie Fire round 1 of 10. DC 13 Dexterity save on both Beasts. Any creature in the area when the spell is cast is also outlined in violet light if it fails a Dexterity saving throw. For the duration, objects and affected creatures shed dim light in a 10-foot radius. Any attack roll against an affected creature or object has advantage if the attacker can see it, and the affected creature or object can’t benefit from being invisible.

OPTIONS (CONDITIONAL ACTIONS)

I think you have all been doing this, but it's good time to point it out.

Giving me options about what your PC will do helps quite a bit when it's time for me to gather all your actions and figure out 'what happened?'.

Remember that this is not table top where we can stop and ask each person (who has full knowledge of what happened before him) what he wants to do.

So thanks for that.

Thoughts?

Strategy comment: Dropping the HPs of the beasts before the sleep spell is advantageous. To put it simply, if you add the remaining HP of both creatures and it is less than my rolled value (32 in this case), then they fall asleep. Else, only the lowest HP beast (with less than or equal to 32) does.

Sorry, I was sort of reacting to you, Veratash, not thinking necessarily strategically. I'm not quite used to this whole, "pile the actions together and let the DM sort it out."

Nyd of Calling wrote:

We are doing 'block initiative' so all the players go whenever the turn comes out and no one has to wait for someone to post to post their own actions.

And if I am to take actions according to posting order, which I will unless someone is against it, then Nyd's 'conditional actions' make sense. The wizard watches and waits for the effect of the spell cast before him. He then casts (or doesn't) his own spell based on what he sees.

Doing anything else would be meta gaming UNLESS Veratash yells at Nyd and tells him what to do and holds off his action based on what the wizard does.

Before anyone said anything, Artur activated his rocket boots, leapt up the ridge and landed right next to the sleeping beast, put the barrel of his pistol against it's head, and pulled the trigger. Since it's unconscious, attacking it within 5' is a crit.

Firebolt Damage: 4d10 ⇒ (2, 7, 7, 8) = 24

Sure that it was dead, he turned to the newcomer as he was holstering his pistol and said "Looks like you're safe now friend. Are you hurt?"

As he spoke, Artur pulled the sprayer he used from his belt and sprayed himself again.

Cure Wounds as a first level spell: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Shaking the small bottle, he looks at the man again and says "I don't have much first aid spray left, but you're welcome to it if you're injured."

Female Half-Orc (Mark of Finding) Ranger (Horizon Walker) 5

Action 1

As the immediate threat was neutralized Kela relaxed a little. As she checked over the others she was relived to see everyone still standing, though there are some bad injuries. "I can get the rest of this sorted Artur if you want to take break." Kela said, concern coloring her voice. She also nodded her thanks for the assistance to Nyd and Tharivol and said "Good work, I appreciate the help."[B]

Then Kela called up the ridge to the stranger [B]"Hello there. I'm glad we found you in time. I'm Kela of the Gatekeepers, if you require further aid or an escort to safety please let me know."

After a quick moment to examine the ridge Kela concluded it would not be too difficult to climb. And she has already been up and down that stretch of path too many times. So she climbed directly up the ridge face to check on the creatures. Finding one of them asleep she turned to speak to the stranger again "You should get down to the others, I need to kill it, and it may wake before I am done."

Killing The Displacer Beast. Kela will wake until Veratash is safely away (unless he wants to stay for some reason) and for any other input or participation the others want to make. But then she's going to stab it, adding Planar Warrior to the damage. Hunter's Mark is still active on that creature.

Climb the Ridge: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Shortsword Attack 1 (advantage because sleeping): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 211d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 231d6 + 6 + 1d6 + 1d8 ⇒ (3) + 6 + (2) + (4) = 15

Shortsword Attack 2 (advantage because prone): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 261d6 + 6 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 6 + (3) = 10
Advantage since I forgot before: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

No worries about rolling for Kela there, I would have had to write a really annoying series of If Then statements depending on how many of them were still standing after everyone's actions. So kinda glad to have avoided that.

Veratash acknowledged Kela's recommendation and walked down the ridge. Then he noticed how he looked. His head pounded with a headache he had never experienced, and he felt blood trickle from his right nostril and left ear. He was still afraid those people might want to take him for some ritual.

Before the group stood a young man who wore a practical overcoat with many pockets that was torn to uselessness. His clothes underneath were very dirty with mixes of dirt and blood. He wore a brown cloak that wasn't damaged, it was probably magical. Under his arm hung a loose bag that seemed empty at first glance. The boots he was wearing were made of leather and were sturdy. Over his dirty head was a cap commonly used by those who work with small objects in order to keep their hair from hampering their sight. It was impossible to see its original color beneath the dirt.

The young man had a sad face, which was once chubby, but had recently lost much weight. It was hard to stand next to him, as he smelled like a mix of sweat, blood and urine, but his expression invoked empathy. Kela could smell the scent of fear coming form him as well.

Unsure what to say, he would have cried if he could have spared the water in his body. Thank you, he said with a dry voice. I need help., he continued hopefully. Water... and sleep, he completed, unaware of his own smell.

DOUBLE POSTS
Double post for the same action so I get to exercise my God-like DM powers!!! :)

I usually default to the 'coolest' action but both of these were very good so let's give the kill to Artur since he was technically first in the post. I'll fix things in the turn recap.

COMBAT
First combat is over. Well done! I must confess that I was a bit worried at first but you guys managed to turn it around.

How did those mechanics (status, maps, pace, etc.) work for you guys?

Veratash takes the waterskin with glee gulping down every drop. Then watches the cleaning process a little embarrassed. The best he can muster is not words, but a thankful look.

A little refreshed, he decides to share some more. I have been runing from a group of hunters for a few days now. Please don't leave me here., he asks.

OOC:
The encounter itself was below the overall power of the group, I think, but the ambush circumstance is what made it hard at first.

I like the status updates. I would think the resource management of all the characters is a little too much for one person to do, but if you choose to do it, I don't oppose. Other than that, I love the health and conditions statuses, it's very thorough.

Map was nice too, I just think that it would be easier to assign numbers to the enemies and put numbers in the map (not sure how hard that would be).

I don't mind doing the resource management as I try to do it as I write the recap. However, I will make mistakes (as you have seen) so it's always a good idea to check up on me and let me know of any discrepancies.

I try to make sure everyone is aware which beast is where by placing some sort of marker on the beast's status table like (with Veratash, north of Artur, etc.) but let me know if it's not clear.

Feedback: I much prefer posting Gameplay in the Gameplay tab than in Discussion. It feels that we are jumbling every conversation in the Discussion tab, and it's particularly difficult at the startup of the game when the Discussion is used to finalize characters and provide feedback. You effectively post the round update in a link in both tabs. But, I'm an old dog and can learn a new trick if we continue this way.

I'm completely alright with your linked round update with an updated map and status. I see the benefits of it as a GM working offline and ensuring that you track everything. I'm also good with you modifying PC actions to optimize in player interests. Play by post games are very difficult to coordinate, because our RL time windows are not aligned.

Whatever happens, just keep posting. Slow games die. Cheers

Artur then commands his turret to move next to him. Putting in a code, the turret returns to it's former shape. Artur then returns the plate to the slot in his pack.

Artur then replaces the now empty vial on his belt and begins to ask the man some questions as they head back to the village.

"So, how did you come to be wandering alone in the woods alone, unarmed, and being chased by Displacer Beasts?" Artur will then allow the man to tell his story, mostly letting him just talk, but occasionally asking leading questions.

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback.

I think it just takes a little time to get used to posting everything on the Discussion tab. I need to make it clear when it's OOC or not; I think you guys are doing a good job of that.

I like my games on the fast side (or as fast as PBP allows) which is why I insisted on you guys posting at least once per day.

I have no intention of this game folding. In fact, I'm brewing another Eberron game which I'll probably start in the next few weeks.

Questions?

Game on!

PS: I sent Veratash a PM with some info so he can fill you guys in.

Not wanting to share too much about himself, Veratash said My name is Veratash. I am a kalashtar who came in search of an Eberron Dragonshard. He did not reveal his acquired Dragonshard and quickly pocketed it, although not very discreetly.

I had joined an expedition into the Shadow Marches, but something went wrong., he said, trying to remember what had happened, and his emerald green eyes revealed his struggle. He still could not put together whether the rest of the expedition survived. I ended up being hunted by capable trackers, and when it seemed that they were finally gone, these beasts start to circle me., he continues pointing at the now dead displacer beasts. But I would guess the hunters are still trying to follow me, somehow., he finishes with pleading eyes.

I'll wait a bit to give Nyd a chance to post before recapping. I won't necessarily move the game forward too much but just summarize/order your RPing.

What was your expedition's goal, that such an...energetic response was necessary?"

Nyd turns to Artur. "I do have m recovery spell loaded Artur. It is not as effective on humanoids as it would be on myself, but would you like me to attempt it?"

M Sorcerer lvl 5 [AC13 | Saves -1 0 +5 0 +3 +7 | Per +3]

Veratash shuddered at Artur's question. He looked at him and simply replied with I do not know. I only hope I was not the only survivor.

The kalashtar made no effort to stop Tharivol's cleaning process, even though in normal circumstances he would have been very uncomfortable.

Nyd's question felt harsh to Veratash. A just one, no one was harmed nor robbed, he replied abruptly. The fact that he was having a hard time putting it all together also triggered a defensive posture. He could still feel the powerlessness he had felt in the foreign laboratory.

Sandar looked confused, "We don't have a leader. Kela here is the authority in threats to the community. We sort of just get together here at the tavern when we need to discuss anything that pertains to the whole community. I usually lead the discussions and make sure everyone is heard but no one elected me or anything."

Now he looked worried, "What's going on? Did you not hunt down whatever took the farmer's fat sow?"

OOC: Bull Hollow is a small, fiercely independent community with perhaps 200-300 people depending on how far out from the 'tavern' you count the home/farms.

Nyd says to Veratash
"I apologize for any rudeness, I have not be long from the battlefield, and it still colors many of my interactions. This spell was designed for others, but if you consent I would heal you.

Assuming consent, I cast Repair Warforged on Veratash

Healing: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8Halved because of the type mismatch.

For what’s it worth, Veratash could have short rested to heal. If those are out, Veratash could have replied to Tharivol that he needed healing. Tharivol has plenty of Cure Wounds if necessary.

The idea I got was that you all wanted to make sure that he could walk and take him back to a safe place to rest. Remember that hit points in 5e are a 'conceptual' idea of health and not necessarily actual wounds. We can always assume that you bandaged him up or we can retcon and say that actual magical healing was offered.
