Trying to remember the stories of the duur'kala, Zdravko stuttered "These were places where the seals were made, not the actual seals themselves...so someone wants to stop new seals from being made?" she knelt to pick up the chipped stones near the fallen morningstar "I wonder if these pebbles retain any ward against the Xoriat." She presses one of the chips into the dead dolgrim's forehead hoping for a reaction.

Artur audibly sighed, then walked over to the Goblin and sprayed her with his First Aid Spray.

"Right, so here's the deal. If you're injured, when someone asks, say your injured. We're all going to be relying on each other, and if you fall over dead, you can't very well help stop those aligned against us, now can you?"

Artur glanced around at the assembled group and sighed again. They're civilians, not soldiers. They don't have trained discipline. Artur chided himself internally.

"Right, that goes for all of you: you get injured, spot something you think is important, or know something you think we need to know, you say something. We either work together, or we die alone. That's the situation we're currently in. You're all here, so I'm taking it to mean you all understand that. If you don't....I'd tell you to head back, but we're honestly past the 'turn back now' stage. I can't make any of you stay, but if you run off on your own, pretend to be injured, or don't speak up when you see something, all you're doing is just setting up everyone to die."

Artur paused to make sure his words were having the intended effect. He softened his face and said "Look, I at least have an idea what you're all thinking about me, and were I in your shoes, I'd probably think the same thing. I'm not trying to be a hardass to be a hardass; I'm doing what I'm doing and saying what I'm saying so that everyone survives. I can't do it all alone though; we" Artur gestured at the group "have to do it together. So please, let's just all work together to stay alive. If you have questions about why I do something, ask. I won't be offended."

Zdravko couldn't follow the human's logic. The healing arts were amazing and could save units from death...why waste them on a little bruise she could easily treat herself? If she were to fall now, there would be nothing to save her.

She shrugged in resignation and nodded. This wasn't the hobgoblin army of the Dhakaani after all, and she would just have to adjust to these strange undisciplined fighters.

Briar's face tightens and she frowns, before closing her eyes and seeming to relax a little

"Zdravko, that was... impressive... " she trails off

"I couldn't... they were so far.. you so fast..." she frowns again.

"I am unused to being of no use in a fight" she finishes clumsily, before moving over to the area of stone the Dolgrims had been at.

"You are well informed of the nature of these Gatekeeper stones, and this reminds me, how is it you do know so much?"

Later, after Zdravko's reply
"I do not know if this is important to anyone's understanding, however I was taught to share at any opportunity, and so."]/b] she clears her throat

[b]"I recall that Dolgrim, spawn of Xoriat..." the names look distasteful to her to utter "...are resistant to non-magical weapons. However there is a hard metal called 'Byeshk' that can cause great injury to Daelkyr and their ilk."

She cocks her head to the side and looks thoughtful, before nodding to herself

"I believe it is a metal with a purple sheen, that used by Hobgoblins during the war. It is unfortunately rare."

She noticed Artur tending to Zdravko.

"I do not bruise easily, however I will ensure I tell you if I am injured" she blinks "Thank you for offering to help ahead of the time. I agree with you, here in the wild we must rely on each other if we are to progress out goals."

Veratash relaxed seeing the creature was down. This time he had felt much more in control than against the displacer beasts and the hunters. Maybe it was because he wasn't being specifically targeted this time.

Artur's words resonated strong in him, as they usually did. He nodded firmly as he finished and thought to himself that he was ready to work as a team. Of course, that was easy to think when they were out of immediate trouble and they had just defeated a couple of ugly creatures.

He watched the warforged and goblin digging around for... something, a little unsure of what they were hoping to find. He took the time to think a little bit more.

Being completely ignorant in the matters regarding this circle, Veratash took in what the others said about it, but came up with nothing. "Can any of you sense if there is active magic in the circle?", he asked. He looked at the sky trying to find the three-eyed birds that had followed him for so long. Were they still following him? Were they having trouble entering the circle?

He tried stepping in and out of the circle back and forth trying to realize whether it felt different. He repeated the process with the smaller circles. "Do any of you know if there are similar circles around the world?"

"Hmm, I do not know of a natural or local source of byeshk, but it might be beneficial if we were to seek out a source. Even a small amount of the metal would be of great benefit for those of us with bows, for example."

In responce to Vertash's comment

"Ah, thank you Veratash. I am used to being in situations were others check for magic reflexively, I have not yet adapted to being the primary in this regard."

Suiting words to actions, Nyd pulls a particular wand of his belt and waves it around, casts Detect Magic. Unlike the mechanical prevision of his own casting, while using the wand Nyd's movements are rounder and less precise. He appears to frown as he does so, as if he finds something distasteful.

I'm just assuming my Wand of Detection fully charged unless I use it more than once a day.

You mean like the two dead dolgrims? :) With a good description, I'll let them provide half-cover for two PCs. Get creative with how the stones 'react' to bringing dead Xoriat spawn inside.

Insight DC 12: there are technically four stones that are 'sort of inside' (the stones shared by the big circle and little circles).

She watches the others and nods approvingly as Zdravko builds makeshift barriers using the corpses..

"Artur, Zdravko, your tactics are good. They will likely be limited to ranged weapons only, but that then means we must do the same or else be 'fish in a barrel'. Or maybe... maybe we can trap those who think us trapped..."

She looks then to the area outside the stones...

Fabian: Looking for somewhere outside the circle she can remain concealed until she bursts out, but not too far that she can't get back to the circle with a round or two of movement. All good if there isn't anywhere, but just in case! Her plan would be to wait until the enemies are in position, then shock and awe attack them to do maximum damage as quickly as possible before fighting her way back to the stones. Perhaps a tall order but she's thinking it even the odds slightly

I have another Eberron PBP going with an identical format as this one which started in 2016. It currently has 4 PCs (dragonmarked wizard, changeling rogue, warforged cleric, and warforged artificer) and I'm looking to add a 5th PC. I think the party could use someone with 'outdoor-skills'.

I am currently running Eyes of the Lich Queen (started not too long ago) and the PCs are about to start exploring an ancient temple in Q'Barra. Characters are 5th level, BTW. The tone of the game is very much like an 'Indiana Jones movie'.

"I don’t know about 'vastly' outnumbered. With skirmishes like this it's always quality over quantity after all."

She sighs

"You know, parley never seems to work with you and your kin, you seem so resistant to agreeing to fall on your own weapons. We'll not be handing 'the boy' over no matter what you might say. Shall we just get to the fighting instead?"

She casts a sideways glance and addresses the others.

"We can’t get out and they won’t come in, but we can’t get away either. Anyone want to begin by sending something large and pointy or big and blasty at them?"

A hard look comes across her.

"If all else fails I will take them on, likewise if they come closer I will charge them. Yes Tharivol, concentrating on the leader would hopefully have an effect, we shall see. If you could provide support at this point that would be good. Just to warn you should I suddenly change."

FYI: tomorrow I have an all day work event and will probably NOT be able to post. I have a layover getting home tomorrow evening and 'may' be able to recap/post, but I don't know. Don't be alarmed if you don't hear from you until Friday.

Zdravko looked like a cocked crossbow about to burst, and nodded at Tharivol's thought "The Shae Tirian may be right. Follow me under cover of darkness and we swarm him now...when he thinks we holdfast."

I could cast darkness 15 ft radius, then we all move up. No AoO since cant be seen. Once in range, cover the darkness and attack. After the attack, the darkness could come back and at least give disadvantage to the xbow attacks. I could leave it up stationary somewhere after to be a skirmish spot like Briar was talking about earlier, hit and run. Just a thought. I could cast it and go the 80 ft to melee range at most.

Artur opened up hostilities by throwing an acid grenade at the two Dolgrims to the far left of the circle.

Why don't I get an action?! :(

Veratash saw the fight break out, consider whether he should turn himself in to avoid putting the others in danger.

"Zdravko it is a good idea, I will use it when I can, but for now I intend to start on their flank and work my way down."

Briar gritted her teeth

"Ah well, today is a good day to shed blood."

She turned and addressed the others quickly

"I've not known you long, but long enough to think you will all do your parts here among the stones. If we are destined not to speak again then I wish your spirits swift travel to the next life, and if we do meet again, then we'll raise a flagon together at the next inn we get to."

She nods, before unslinging a javelin from the side of her pack. Slowly hefting it in one hand and getting used to the weight, she moves to the east circle and points at a dolgrim, before throwing her whole weight behind the javelin as it suddenly burst from her hand and split the air on its way to shedding first blood.

javelin: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
piercing: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Before it had even landed, she had moved as far as she could towards the easternmost pair, ensuring she was crouched behind a stone.

OOC: I rolled for initiative and you came up after the dolgrims. I know you were all ready to fight but so were the dolgrims.

Dolgrims' AC=16.

I'm not quite sure what Zdravko is suggesting just yet but I'm not worrying about it since it's just a suggestion at this point. :)

"They are too dispersed to make wide area attacks effective at this time. Unfortunately I am the only one I believe to be immune to my blinding cloud, so defensive use is not optimal."

Nyd doesn't look all that happy about saying this, "While giving up the momentum is usually not-optimal, most of these creatures are out of range of my non-expendable attacks. We may need them to come closer."

"That being said." Nyd speaks the math of a spell with rapid precision, and four bolts of force appear and streak towards the leader of the hostiles.

Nyd casts Magic Missile using a 2nd level slot. If I have the distances right the leader is just within range.

Magic Missile 1: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Magic Missile 2: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Magic Missile 3: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Magic Missile 4: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

I just meant if attacking the leader was the main goal, his long range is a problem. Simply running up to him would open us to attacks from the dolgrim crossbows/melee. But I could cast a globe of darkness on us after running up, so we could close the gap and have some protection from counterattacks. And yeah, was just floating it as an idea...will take actions later today.

Fabian, Briar will be using a bonus action but as she's somewhat occluded from the others at the moment, i'll describe what has happened to her once she bursts from cover next round!

I have her as being in the east circle; is she behind a stone for cover?

BTW, I'll be recapping this morning and moving those that haven't acted to the bottom of the initiative order.
