The cairn seems to bear no identifying marks, perhaps having been worn away by long exposure to the elements. Rokgurn senses no spirits of any kind hovering in the area. He does detect magic within the area, but at the same time hears the sounds of something large crashing through the jungle. Several large somethings, actually.

Holding off on rolling initiative just yet, as you all have time to react.
Weather: Above the 30ft canopy (including top 10ft square of the ziggurat) windstorm level winds, -8 to Perception/Fly and no ranged attacks, Medium creatures checked/Small blown away. Below the canopy, severe winds, -4 to Perception/Fly/Ranged attacks, Small creatures checked/Tiny blown away.
Terrain: Green patches are tightly packed plants, treated as difficult terrain for Large and smaller creatures. Ziggurat is 40ft tall with incredibly steep sides, 1/4th movement speed when traversing. (1/2 speed with DC25 Acrobatics)
Rokgurn |
Rokgurn calls out to his party not to attack.
"They are only harmless animals really. Hold your attack."
Rokgurn fortifies his magic by pulling forth the energy of the lands right through the ancient monolith and into his body. He calls upon the spirit of the eagle to aid him in his power of flight.
Cast Fly on self, +1 CL, so +7 Fly bonus for a total of +27. This must be the first time a person has cast fly on an Air Elemental. :)
Rokgurn takes a moment to secure his gear if necessary (possible move action) and he rises straight up into the mighty windstorm (5'Fly up) not as an act of defiance but rather an act of humble obedience. With great respect he experiences the mighty lashing of the winds protected by divine magics and his elemental form. He motions with both arms and calls for the Giant Eagles to take flight and join him in the air. He has no wish for them to be eaten by what is likely hungry dinosaurs.
Crazy Hairy |
As soon as she learns of the even stronger winds at the top, Bombshell mutters to herself as she takes a minute to prepare an extract of Enlarge Person.
It takes 1 minute to prepare the extract, but given all the time it took them to climb up, look things over and then open the sarcophagus, let me know if she finished the extract. Bombshell would now appear to be a medium-sized female halfling, and enlarged fly skill mod would be +25.
Hamish Carmody O'Toole |
"We seem to riled up the locals." Hamish says, with a wave of his flaming cutlass.
"Rather large locals." He amends, a moment later, as he realizes just how loud the sounds are.
He glances over at Rokgurn with a frown. "What makes you think they're harmless animals? By the sounds of 'er, that's the biggest darn chicken you'll ever see. Few things that big is harmless."
"Probably not the biggest one I've seen, mind you." He adds, though for once doesn't elaborate.
Did I miss a piece of info somewhere?
He mutters a quick incantation, and the Gull increases in size, now almost ten feet from stem to stern. He quickly climbs on board, to a "Captain on deck" from Mr. Phips, and casts one more spell, as the crew begins to deploy large metal plates along the outer hull.
Casting evolution surge to make the ship big enough to ride, then shield on the Gull
Rokgurn |
@Hamish - A Druid might consider dinosaurs "harmless" if properly handled as they are animals. They are relatively harmless in comparison to undead, evil outsiders, assassins and weird aberrations. :)
Rokgurn |
Stanton told us about Rurat who shepherds dinosaurs. This is the basis of my assumption. It fits with the fact pattern so far.
Yuri Twobeards |
Yuri grips his dorn dergar and awaits whatever may be coming.

Omrax stands on the side of the ziggurat with sword and board ready.
I have no quarrel with animals or even dinosaurs. Unless they are of sort found in the Mwangi demon apes or infernal summons.

Grandmaster TOZ |
With the windstorm it is hard to tell, as it is seeming to come from all directions.
Omrax the Bold |
Omrax will cast divine favor upon himself as the beasts approach from all sides.
We shall see soon enough what manner of creatures we face.

Rokgurn shields himself against the powers of electricity and dances along the strong currents to be floating 50 feet above the ground.
Rokgurn's modified Fly skill at this altitude is +19. He automatically succeeds on all check rolls. He casts Resist Energy(Electricity) on himself.
He motions to the Giant Eagles to continue flying away from the battlefield.
Kasimir vonVang |
Kasimir, seeing the wisdom in the druid’s action, comes off delay to cast Resist Energy:Electricity on himself.

Crushing several smaller trees, four enormous dinosaurs breach the clearing of the ruins. Sniffing at the air, they cast their massive heads side to side for prey. Walking alongside them all, head just below the canopy, an armored figure of sleek reptilian scales stares hard at all of you. "They will dine well on your corpses." The growl comes through clenched fangs as he levels a short spear the size of a ballista bolt at you, shield readied.

Well, here are thine dinosaurs, Master Rokgurn. What is thy plan to deal with them?
No kn:nature. Do any of them look particularly infernal, firey or the like?
He calls to the armored figure. Master Rurat I presume?
Waiting for AoE or buffs before moving
Rokgurn |
Rokgurn decides to give into the savagery of nature as his spell of concealment is unlikely to be effective.
He activates his rune of alacrity (+2 dodge AC, 3 rounds, swift action).
"Light him up. Attack pattern Alpha!"
Rokgurn gestures and the jungle erupts in flame. Enormous waves of fire surround (the dinosaurs and) their leader without harming the jungle itself.
He flies further up and away from the leader. He is currently 60 feet up in the air.
He auto succeeds his fly checks as his fly is now +27 (reduced to +19 in the heavy winds).
If Master Rurat is an animal then the post will stand as is and master and dinos will be flamed. If he is something else then Rokgurn will cast Flame Strike (same 14d6 roll) on Rurat Reflex DC 21 for half damage and not target the Dinosaurs.
Fire Storm (Free Action - Place Magic +1 CL, CL 14), 14d6 Fire damage, Reflex Save DC 24 for half damage. On following turns creatures that fail the original save are on fire. They will take 4d6 Fire damage a turn until they spend a full round action to attempt a Reflex save of DC 20.
Fire Storm: 14d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 1, 3, 5, 6, 3, 3, 5, 4, 4, 4, 5, 4) = 56

Nature 1: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (9) + 23 = 32
Nature 2: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (6) + 23 = 29

Whisper recognizes Rurat the saurian, although they do not recall saurians having the ability to walk on air, usually having an affinity to volcanic areas. The rest are clearly tyrannosauruses, known for their devastating bites and ability to swallow prey whole.
Rurat is a monstrous humanoid and clearly sees the party. The T-rexes do not appear able to see the party.
Grandmaster TOZ |

Yellow Reflex: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20
Red Reflex: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25
Rurat is caught off guard by the burst of fire, roaring in pain as his scales singe. Only one of the dinosaurs fares any better. The glare Rurat gives Rokgurn is murderous as his companions snap their attention to the party, throaty growls carried on the wind to the party.

@Grandmaster TOZ - If it is going to break the spell anyways can we have the Firestorm damage the dinosaurs as well?
Grandmaster TOZ |
Tracker updated! Edit: One thing to remember that I didn't think would come into play, the canopy is total concealment to anyone on the other side. Rokgurn is unable to see the enemy, or most of the party now.
Rokgurn |
Right how high up can he be and still see people?
Grandmaster TOZ |
Canopy is 30ft. Edit: This is the optional encounter I didn't get to do at GenCon, so we're experiencing it together. :)
Rokgurn |
Ok. Originally I had him at 50' elevation but I did not know about the total concealment. I am going to say that he was just under the canopy so he would be able to interact with Rurat and then have him fly straight up after his spell to 60'. So I will shift him a bit back on the map close to Hamish. Sorry for the confusion but I didn't know.
Omrax the Bold |
Omrax will cast Angelic Aspect then draw his longsword as he flies up to 25’ (below canaopy)

I'm a little unclear from the various posts - are we fighting the dinosaurs or not? Assuming yes, then:
Yuri finds this whole situation infuriating. Who puts a ziggurat in a jungle? And then leaves a coffin on top of it? And then uses it as dino bait?!!? This is outrageous! He flies into a rage, and gestures to the dinosaurs: "Here kitty, kitty! Come and get me!"
Free action: enter rage (round 1/32)
Free action: activate Come and Get Me rage power, giving foes +4 to attacks and damage against him.

If something somehow is attacking Yuri from 5 or 10' away the AoO will have to be rolled separately using his boulder helmet.
Yuri will delay for his own attacks until a foe comes within 20' of him.
Yuri's current AC is 27 and CMD is 34.

My apologies for the posting delay - I was out running Eyes of the Ten tabletop all day.
Godspeed to you and your victims! Yuri does not recall anything about the reclusive saurian, but recalls tyranosaurus bites can inflict bleeding on critical hits.

@Hamish - Apologies. The plan went sideways as I discovered in-game how that fringe spell actually works. At least almost all the dinosaurs and Rurat will be burning up each round now as they try to swallow you. :)
