Rokgurn |
@Grandmaster TOZ - I suspect that we are dealing with invisible opponents here otherwise why single out Crazy. If they are within 30' of any of us then we can detect that there is an invisible opponent with a passive DC 20 Perception check otherwise it is a stealth+20 vs Perception check with distance penalties. This is often forgotten by many a GM so I am pointing it out. You probably know this but I have to try. ;)
I understand that our characters do not know that anything is amiss. Nothing to see here. :)
Crazy Hairy |
Bombshell shouts out a warning. "Watch out! There are COLOSSAL ethereal Mantises of DOOOM on the field, and they're coming right for us!"
Kn-Nature: 1d20 + 12 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 12 + 2 + 2 = 18
And indeed, that's all that Bombshell knows about these things.
Bombshell will take a 5' step off the back of her Eagle and take an extract of targeted bomb admixture.
Yuri Twobeards |
Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19 Yuri has probably never heard of Mantises of Doooom.
Rokgurn |
This is really not how I thought this combat would go down. I was expecting fire creatures or exploding tar pits and the like not ethereal monsters.
@Grandmaster TOZ - A few questions. 1) Will my character get to act this round as his initiative is higher than Crazy? 2) My character has the Etheral Jaunt supernatural ability. My reading of this ability is that he will be able to interact fully with ethereal creatures and that his spells will work on them if cast on the ethereal plane. Do you agree? 3) Can we make knowledge checks now or should we be waiting for our actual turn in initiative?
Grandmaster TOZ |
As Bombshell drinks her extract, a massive claw seems to slice through reality at her! The devastating blow is blunted by her stony skin, but it is only thanks to her abjurations that the claw does not latch onto her. As swiftly as it appeared, it withdraws into nothingness.
AoO on Bombshell: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (20) + 17 = 37

Crazy, let me know if I missed anything there. For the record, it reached you from over 20ft away. Rokgurn, only Bombshell was able to act thanks to see invisible. We are now in normal rounds. You can make knowledge checks at a penalty or wait until you can see them clearly.
Rokgurn |
Rokgurn flies forward hoping to put some distance between himself and these monsters.
"I go to do battle with these creatures on their own plane of existence."
With those words both Rokgurn and Whisper disappear from the sight of all but Crazy Hairy.
Standard action - activate Ethereal Jaunt.
He then determines what he and Whisper know about these creatures.

Rokgurn, let me know if you are able to jaunt while grappled or have a different action or a defense against grapple.
Rokgurn |
Rokgurn calls upon the forces of nature itself to defy this creature.
Wow. they get opportunity attacks as well. Ouch.
He will use an immediate action to use Divine Interference against the initial attack of opportunity. Please reroll it at -5 to see if it hits as he will expend a 5th level slot to power it.
Edit - Even if hit he would be able to Jaunt as it is a supernatural power.
Grandmaster TOZ |
Reroll on Rokgurn: 1d20 + 17 - 5 ⇒ (19) + 17 - 5 = 31 I believe that still hits given the inability to see ethereal creatures? You should still be able to go ethereal.

Damage is reduced to 16 due to DR 5/-. If going Ethereal negates the grapple then he will phase out of the claw. On the Ethereal plane he should be able to see and make his knowledge checks as above.

As Rokgurn shifts ethereal, he sees the full extent of the scene that sent Bombshell into a panic. (Working on an alternate map view for those that can see.) Almost as soon as he is solid, the massive mantis flings him to the side, right into the waiting claw of the larger monstrosity. As the bigger mantis takes hold, Rokgurn finds both he and the mantis back on the material plane again. With a fling of its own claw, the mantis sends Rokgurn careening into the tar pit and its boiling temperatures!

Rokgurn |
Reflex save to become stuck: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (10) + 15 = 25
Rokgurn struggles against the stickiness of the tar pit but he
does not even feel the heat (Protection from Energy- Fire is reduced to 115 hps) due to his magical protections.
Could you please revise the damage taken. Also please note that his DR 5/- should apply to all attacks and throw damage as well.
Edit. I changed my idea on the question. Whisper would like to know if these creatures can see invisible creatures?
Edit - Why are more creatures getting AOO on my character? His movement ended when grabbed and he then spent a standard action (that does not provoke as it is Supernatural) to turn Ethereal?
Grandmaster TOZ |
Environmental damage such as falling and this throw damage are not subject to DR. Apologies for misremembering protection to be resistance. Both mantis used an ability to throw Rokgurn 30ft, which as determined before with the wind movement does provoke.
Rokgurn |
Whisper would like to know if these creatures have the ability to see invisible creatures.
Grandmaster TOZ |
Normally not, but these appear to have evolved sight beyond sight, allowing them to see all things as they truly are. True seeing.
Rokgurn |
I am sorry to be a bother about this but exactly when in the turn did the 2nd AOO happen? As I recall I moved which provoked. I then used an immediate action on my turn which counts as a swift action (as it is during my turn) to use Divine Intervention which failed. I was grabbed ending my movement. I then used a standard action to turn Ethereal. This should end my turn. So I should have an immediate action to activate the Divine Intervention against the 2nd Mantis. Or at least I think so. I have a nice 7th level slot to burn if you agree.
Grandmaster TOZ |
If that is what you would like to do, we can redo the previous round.
Rokgurn |
Yes. I might as well burn the 7th level slot and roll the dice.

Kasimir scoffs. “You cannot deceive the Prince of Deceivers so easily. Show yourself!”
He uses his swift action to copycat himself, and then casts invisibility purge and then coasts forward on eagleback, exact location pending map update.

Omrax the Bold |
Omrax watches in shock as Crazy is mauled and Rokgurn disappears (right?)
Some foul beast attacks us to be certain! We must avenge our brothers in arms!

(OOC this is the amended post)
Kasimir’s eyes go wide at the sight of this immense creature. Acting quickly, he calls upon his copycat power to disguise himself with a single quick gesture. Then, he hauls back on the reins and shouts ”Up, now!”
(This could provoke, but moving 20’ higher should be a grand total of 70 feet up, and hopefully out of melee range.)
From there, Kasimir will cast Invisibility Purge. with a 65’ radius, casting defensively just in case, using his bracers to help him.

Hamish Carmody O'Toole |
"Besmara's salty depths." Hamish exclaims, as whatever foes guard this place start attacking with no visible indication of where they might be!
The crewman throwing the depth sounders start reacting, pointing towards the ground yelling something about submersed enemies.
Shortly thereafter, the collasal mantis pops into view, and snags up Yuri.
"Kraken breaching to starboard!" One of the sailors yells, and the men on the foredeck immediately swivel the harpoon guns around, as cannon ports begin to open along both sides.
"Evasive maneuvers!" Hamish yells. "Prepare the chase cannons and depth charges, and ready to repel boarders!" Immediately, many of the crew start ducking behind the armored gunwales, while others start rolling small weighted barrels towards the rails. The ship starts weaving back towards its captain.
The ship's harpoons fire at the creature grasping Yuri, the tiny spears seeming little more than pin pricks compared to the size of the enemy.

The Gull will perform a single move, defensively moving back towards Hamish, intentionally provoking from pretty much all unseen enemies (though looks like 2 of them are currently grappling 8P), then attack yellow at range.
Current Seaward Gull AC: 43
As the Gull approaches, Hamish takes a small flying step to the side, and downwards (not at all intending to use the Gull to hide behind). Conscious of Rokgurn getting plucked from existence right nearby, he utters a quick arcane phrase, ever wary of the unseen foe, and touches the ships mast.

He will then call out a swift word to release Yuri.
By the Inheritor, be released of thy captivity!
With a powerful prayer, you call upon the servants of your god to whisk a friend out of a grapple. The target loses the grappled and pinned conditions and is teleported 10 feet. If there is no available space for the target to teleport to, the spell fails.
If Yuri is not grappled, then Omrax casts grace...otherwise the same actions...pathetic as it was.
Yuri Twobeards |
When Yuri is grappled by the fearsome mantis claw a talisman around his neck momentarily sparkles before crumbling to dust. Yuri wears a Lesser Talisman of Freedom, which is triggered when he is grappled, granting him freedom of movement for 3 rounds. As I read the item and the spell, it doesn't actually prevent me from being grappled, but it ensures that any attempt to maintain the grapple next round will auto-fail. That's how I rule freedom of movement when I GM, but I've noticed that many others simply rule it as the initial grapple attempt fails. It matters in this case because Yuri will presumably be in a different position on the map if the grapple didn't succeed in the first place. GM, what's your ruling?
Yuri Twobeards |
In that case, where am I on the map? (That is, was my position changed as a result of having been grappled?)
Edit - never mind, looks like you moved me. Thx.
Yuri Twobeards |
Yuri finds this situation infuriating. "Where is Rocky? Speak, foul insect! What have you done with him?!?" Stepping forward, he unleashes a torrent of attacks on the creature.

Pardon the questions:
- are they strictly moving on the ground, or are they flying?
- how far has Crazy seen them reach? (if Rokgurn's movement provoked AoO, it might've been at the furthest the beasties could reach.)
- Also, have any of them taken more than one attack of opportunity between their own actions, i.e. do they have combat reflexes? (it would seem yes, but a bit confusing with post & repost, etc)

Rokgurn now understands the full extent of his hubris as he is held in a fatal death grip by this alien monstrosity. With no other options remaining Rokgurn allows his body to phase back into the material plane. After a moment of deliberation his body begins to shift in an attempt to try and absorb the oncoming onslaught. His form rearranges into a giant peacock of water.
