Oh, great.
"I think Aerel found the fey. Or they found him. Let's go see what we are dealing with."

How far away is Aerel? Can we get a map? Hoping to get close enough to see and make Knowledge checks.

Map updated. Aerel was about 75 feet away when you heard him. The map coincides with the moment you reach the edge of the clearing.

Aerel:

Your suspicions suddenly evaporate at the woman's invitation. You don't know what she is, but clearly she is some sort of benevolent fey.

Trusting her implicitly, her meal looks very appetizing. It's obviously not poisonous, considering how the dwarves are stuffing themselves and are fine. They wave you over and make sure you have a spot at the table.

You are charmed, obviously. The meal is delicious, filling you with a strength and vitality that you've never experienced before. You have a +2 bonus to Strength and Constitution, 1d8 ⇒ 3 temporary hit points, and a +4 morale bonus on fear saves. Also, a -4 penalty on all other Will saves.

A massive tree stump rises from the center of this clearing. Its surface is polished smooth and set with cups, plates, and pitchers all carved from wood. Fruits, roasted meats, cheeses, and red wine overflow the serving dishes.

Four dwarves and Aerel sit around the table, feasting and drinking while a beautiful woman dances around the table playing a lyre and exhorting the dwarves to feast to their heart's content.

Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (17) + 15 = 32
The woman looks over to see everyone else show up. "More guests! I suspected my new elven guest would have friends! Come one, come all! There's food and drink enough for everyone."

"My dear lady, you may call me Benedict. We are on a most important quest and cannot tarry. Aerel, can you come join us? I think we must make more distance before the night falls.
Our quest, Tromaki, is a noble one. We seek to rid this fair forest of a most pernicious threat - the infestation of a hobgoblin army. We beseech you to grant us leave to proceed."

Sylvan:
"Surely your grace must be the equal of your beauty and you can find it in your generous heart to grant this request."

Benedict doesn't know for sure if this woman is fey, but he suspects it, and he is wary of eating the food of Faerie.

Still, he does his very best to be polite in declining the invitation.

Would appreciate any Aid Another he can get here.

In between large bites, the dwarves make their acquaintances of Aerel. "Duggin."
"Solba."
"Margrath."
"J.W."

Tromaki waves her hand dismissively. "Oh, pish posh, Benedict. Why not stop and feast now before you go? There's simply no reason for you to decline my invitation to feast and make merry!"

Her eyes narrow at Benedict, while her smile takes a slightly harder edge.

Benedict feels another tug at his mind as the power of the dance almost compels him into a frenzy.

"Aerel, she has bewitched you! She now attacks our minds!"

Benedict moves forward and sweeps her legs. He hopes that knocking down the woman will at least temporarily stop her dance - at the very least it should make it easier for Grum to hit her.

Benedict does not have Improved Trip, so this will provoke if she threatens. His AC is 26, or 27 if she is evil (since he is adjacent to 1 ally and has shared Lastwall Phalanx). If she hits, that damage is applied as a penalty to his attack roll.

William's magic fizzles as it strikes her, but Grum's pair of attacks end Tromaki's life brutally.

The monster's description says that the confusion effect lasts for one hour. Trying to roll that out is, frankly, insane. I'm just going to handwave that the effects start fading and those affected can be restrained without a lot of difficulty.

For a while after the woman's death, the affected are confused and aggressive. However, the madness has lost its power with the creature's demise, so everyone can eventually calmed down and brought under control.

Once made lucid, the dwarves thank the heroes. "That fey witch had us feasting and stuffing ourselves for days," Duggin says. "We knew the forest was dangerous, but unknown dangers seemed better than a certain death to hobgoblins."

"Yeah," J.W. agrees. "We're from Radya's Hollow. The Ironfang Legion has control over everything south of the river. Now they've been hitting towns in the Hollow Hills."

What happened to Rayda's Hollow? Has it been attacked?"

"Phaendar, you say? You've been surviving well, it seems," Duggin says. "Maybe there's hope for us yet here in these woods. Though I don't know about Longshadow. Those poor bastards." He shakes his head sadly.

"Well, what can we do?" Solba asks. "Just give up on everyone? My brother's still in those mines. No one knows them like him, except for maybe Meslin. So I have hope, but not if we just keep hiding."

If the Ironfang Legion is in some of the area between here and Longshadow, then coming with us could be dangerous. Are any of you veteran warriors or skilled in magic? If not, the Fort is probably best.

We can stop by Rayda's Hollow and check the mines. Solba, we will try to find your brother. If there are survivors hiding there, maybe we can save them. It is the right thing to do, and they may be able to tell us about the Ironfang forces in the area."

And OOC, I don't want to pass up side quests- we need the XP!

The dwarves shake their heads, not having any particular insight over whether Tromaki had a lair where she kept any treasures.

They confer with themselves, but it's obvious none of them have any combat or magic training. They're miners.

Ultimately, they decide to try to make their way to Fort Ristin, since they also have some experience in smithing and stonemasonry, and expect their skills will be useful to the Rangers.

Solba is especially grateful at the pledge to check out the mines near Radya's Hollow.

Grum eyed the dwarves, measuring them up as they spoke to the others. He had very limited experience with them, outside of tales of their martial prowess and their almost mystical ability in crafting. The only dwarves he had ever seen before had been the odd blacksmith here for there. After sizing up the civilians he came to the conclusion that he could take them, and thus lost interest. He was glad though, that they were going to the fort. It meant that, if nothing else, it's defenses were going to be improved, and that would please the Lord in Iron.

"See no reason why we shouldn't clear the mines." Grum agreed. Though he kept it to himself that a big part of his ready acceptance was the thought that there might be dwarven made items left behind...

Solba appears extremely grateful. "Thank you. His name is Voldan. Also, I managed to bury a stash of some valuables before we fled. If you go look for him, you're welcome to it." She gives a description of where the treasures were hidden.

It was late enough that everyone probably camps for the night.

With the directions to Fort Trevelay, the dwarves bid everyone farewell and best wishes. They depart to the east, while the Heroes plan to continue west.

The next day, the group continues through the woods, noticing growing signs of humanoids. Old hunter's blinds, spots where trees were brought down for lumber, and better-traveled trails are evident.

Survival or Knowledge (nature) DC 17:

There are also signs that you have entered a large predator's territory. You would have to make Survival or Stealth checks to make your way through this area to avoid encountering it.

William inspects some of the human activities and then starts inspecting trees and the ground. He then looks to the group, "It looks like there is some large predator in this area. We will need to be careful if we want to avoid it."

Benedict doesn't see the signs, but takes William's word for it.

"Can we tell what kind of predator is? If it is an animal, I think we found a wand to possibly charm it."
Grum has that wand.
"I don't know how likely that wand is to work, so avoiding the predator is still probably the best choice... but if we do happen to encounter it, and it is an animal, that's an option."

William's roll wasn't high enough to ID the actual animal, but he knows it's big.

"I'll have the wand ready should it appear." Grum said. "But lets hope that it can be avoided. No profit in fighting a beast."

Aerel estimates that the sizable rends in the treebark and spoor indicate a large species of bear.

”That, my friend, depends on the beast and your ability to recognize the valuable bits. But I agree, now is not the time to engage in a hunt. Let me see what I can learn about the creature. Those marks lead me to believe that it is a rather large bear - or something like a bear.”

Aerel will attempt to move stealthily ahead of the others and watch for spoor.

"Aerel does have a point - if this were a giant feral hog, there could be bacon at the end of our quest."

If Survival represents figuring out the bear's territory and finding a path around it, do we each need to make checks, or is it one for the party?

”Or a mage might be looking for powdered owlbear beak for some strange spell. But the only thing I want of these claws is that they don’t tear me in half. The creature is welcome to keep his parts if he lets me keep mine!” He pauses, ”Actually, we have to consider we might be dealing with a mother-creature, so wandering too close to her lair - and babies - might cause an issue even if we are not aggressive. Keep your eyes open, for sure.”

For the first mile, Aerel's skills at woodlore keeps them from stumbling across the bear.
