The Avalon Chronicles

Game Master lynora

This is a high level rules light game set in a school for magical kids, kinda a mash-up of Soul Eater, Harry Potter, and X-Men. :)

Paper physics are just applied mathematics.
Math is no. :P

I beg to differ. Math is fun. Especially calculus. Paper physics are no fun because they get some kind of perverse joy out of trying to trick students. Teaching us how to do the problems shouldn't be a competition to see how frustrated we get before we give up. :/

I think the most part of that is: Who is going to look at a squirell standing still and be like "oh gosh that squirrel is casting a spell and not moving. It must be____. It's definitely not any of the flying kids or anything casting the spell without moving."

This is where as a DM, I'd say there has to be probable in character cause to attempt an identify roll.

There was a thread about this a while back. It was suggested that spells without components have other distinctive visual effects, because the Spellcraft check requires that you be able to see the person casting.

Posts soon!

M Extrodinaraly Contrary Meatbag Fourm pyromancer 1

So there isn't much point to no-component spells.

No-somatic there is decent use for, but it's very rare you actually need no vocal, and nrly unheard of that you need both.

Shadow Lodge

Non-vocal lends itself well to invisible creatures that cast spells. Still pretty rare.

Male Icy Catfolk Image Warlock/Rogue 16

Everything i have is Su, so i have no need of components. >:)

male human monk 16

I don't cast spells, in fact I don't even have magic items.

as for the check to identify the spell...I have opinions on the matter but I am not one to decide.

and so my opinion is probably Moo

Tybalt Baneko wrote:

Actually, it's mostly no-component sp.

Bla bla semantics semantics. :P
It's actually kind of annoying.
It's listed as Su, mimics spells like Sp, and apparently has only somantic components, neither of which of those classifications have....

Female awww, but that would be telling unknown

No component as in no material component or as in no material and still and silent?

No material component means you don't have to cart a bunch of stuff around. Still spell and Silent spell are all kinds of useful since they let you cast without verbal or somatic components. And nothing in the wording of spell craft says that you can identify a stilled silent spell. It says you have to be able to see it. It's akin to perception and I would put the DC on that crazy high.

M Extrodinaraly Contrary Meatbag Fourm pyromancer 1

No matiral, still, and silent.

Silent spell is rather useless aside from very uncommon curumstances.

Still spell allows to ignore armor failure, and cast In a grapple, both a good bit more useful.
Eschew maritals is good, it prevents he caster sitting out because of a sundered spell component pouch.

Male Archangel of Awesome Paladin of Badassery 20

Is Settro still all squirrely? If so, there's no way he would think to try and ID a tiny rodent casting, no matter what ruling there is on identifying spells without somatic components.

Mostly it comes from the fact that it doesn't specifically say "only spells with components can be identified". That's the source of the confusion regarding the wording. At that point it's up to DM's discretion.

*shrug* - There are good explanations either way, but it does specifically say that you need to be able to see them.

Monkeygod, I think Anahita was talking to your new guy. I could be wrong, but you're the owner of Voice of Awesomeness, yet not noticing?

:)

I do not believe a name was provided, thus, just pronouns have been thrown out in my posts of her.

ps: Portal is awesome, so was the second version. Physics rocks.

Greetings, cousins!

Female awww, but that would be telling unknown

Today was supposed to be evil scary test part 2, but school was cancelled on account of the roads being a veritable ice rink, so not really sure how we're supposed to make that up.

Instead I got some much needed sleep and am feeling much better. I have to spend a little time today on studying for physics test tomorrow and doing some housework, but mostly just having a very welcome lazy day...not even getting out of pajamas today. ^.^

A primer to the children of the firebird noble families:

Helios: the only child of House Helios is Fieri. She's pretty much a paragon of everything a firebird should be, but was abjured due to marrying a non-firebird.
Soleil: The oldest and heir is Embre. Formerly betrothed to Fieri, and known to be a violent jerk who beat up his cousin on a regular basis. Asha is Embre's younger cousin who was shut up in a tower her whole life until she escaped during the evacuation. She is an acrobat and can phase through solid objects. Nothing is currently known of Pyry except that he froze the Soleil manor before the destruction of the sun, which suggests that he belongs to this family, and he is opposite to everything that is normal for a firebird, vulnerable to fire and using cold magic and unable to eat a normal firebird diet.
del Sol: Because Fieri was considered part of House Helios, she doesn't get counted as one of the children of House del Sol even though she used the del Sol name before she married James Sunwake. Raelle is the oldest of the del Sol children and her strange abilities and dark hair have set her apart from the beginning. The there is Ignace who is a living portal to the plane of fire, a fact that her parents have done their best to hide from general knowledge. And the youngest, Chara, is suffering from a brittle bone disease. All of the del Sol girls are known for exceptional good looks.
Phoebus: The two sons of the Phoebus family have been at Avalon for some time. They are considered to be a credit to their family and are admired for good looks and most importantly ability with fire. Igni's flames burn especially hot, a fact that is more an annoyance than a blessing to him as he prefers to spend his time crafting beautiful weapons. Mithros has discovered a passion for piloting and is one of two test pilots for Jiminy's mech prototypes.
-------------------------------------------------------------
(About to arrive at Avalon but not yet there...I'm trying to stay vague with these guys since they haven't had screen time yet)
Niyambi: There are two Niyambi children. Taika is able to magically craft just about anything, which her family has tried to hide. And Vis is just plain...off. They don't even know what to make of the young boy most of the time.
Surya: Two cousins (both girls) who have both been kept hidden away. They barely even know each other. Archena who has some sort of summoning ability that is kept hushed up and Serrin who never seems to be seen in the light.
Svarog: Lucas, Lily, and Phaedra are all siblings. For some reason Lucas and Lily have been kept away from public view. Nobody really knows much about them. Phaedra is the youngest Svarog child. Then there are their cousins. Pyrrhos is considered the most presentable of the Svarog children and has been taken out in public on occasion. He has no siblings. The remaining three are all siblings.* Solus has some sonic abilities which is at least somewhat considered acceptable so he hasn't been kept as hidden as some of the others. Hestia is a passable musician, but there's something wrong with her flames. And Cindra seems to be as eager to stay out of the public eye as her family is to keep her there.

* The info on the last three cousins is still somewhat mutable. They're NPCs. I made them up to fill out the ranks. If someone else wants one of these three, speak up. If nobody else claims them within the next day or two they'll remain as NPCs under my control. I'll be happy to relinquish them at a later date if someone wants them then, but they'd be stuck with whatever details I had provided about the character and their abilities in the meantime.

Actually, i may have another idea...

I'll get to work.

I will lay claim to Cindra, Lyn. :)

How inter related are the noble houses?

Heistia or solace...

I really don't know witch would be better to work with.

Sweet. Let me know if you want to use the ability I had planned for her or if you had something else in mind (which is totally cool...I was just trying to not have any nameless faceless people in the group showing up.)

They're pretty strongly inter related. All of them are cousins of some sort.

Heistia, problobly.

Lyn, any elaboration on how her flames are wrong?

Well, just let me know. Hestia and Solus are both up for grabs and it's pretty much first come first served here. Though I would show some preference to someone who wasn't already playing a firebird noble, just to be fair, if I had to choose between two people both wanting to play the same character

M Extrodinaraly Contrary Meatbag Fourm pyromancer 1

Indeed, I'll gladly let someone else have it if they want it.

They're green. And completely without heat. This is not set in stone, adjustments can be made still.

Who remembers when I was talking about the Lycan metal bender? Look what I found.

M Extrodinaraly Contrary Meatbag Fourm pyromancer 1

I have no idea what class i want her to be, but i do have an idea of a special ablity for her.

special power:

Heistia special power-
Any technology or magic item hitsta touches, she knows how to use. This applies to everything from musical instruments to high tech vehicles. Knows how to use does not mean she has the skill to use them, if they require reflexes or practice. In addition, cursed items do nothing to her, and magic items that require someone to be of a certain class, alignment, or any other specific thing, function for her as if the was the appropriate alignment/class/whatever.

** spoiler omitted **

Spoiler:
Yeah that cold work. And might explain her flames. She's somehow conjuring arcane energy instead of fire. And the energy is usually channeled into this ability to use any item.

M Extrodinaraly Contrary Meatbag Fourm pyromancer 1

Spoiler:
makes enough sense. Perhaps artificer wilder?

Edit
Spoiler:
no, that wouldn't work. That only works for psionics.

I believe that based on the last conversation there that Settro's teleport is successful and Jiminy is sent back to the school. (With Settro or alone?) Without going through the painful process of treating things as if they are in round by round, are the efforts of the team to locate the would-be assassin successful? Jiminy is going to grab a couple of magic items and use the school's teleport room to hop back, but a whole lot harder to shoot. So assume you have about a minute worth of looking before he gets back. And anyone who is looking can post relevant actions. I'm going to post with Jiminy to get things moving again. MG, this is your antagonist so you'll have to tell the team what they do or don't find in that minute that Jiminy is gone.

M Extrodinaraly Contrary Meatbag Fourm pyromancer 1

With settro.
Settro has to go with you.

It's not much of a secret. No matter how much she wishes it was. ;)

Spoiler:
I was going to have her have the ability to make glass bubbles....not much as magical abilities go. And embarrassing as all get out.

But as I said, not written in stone and I'm more than happy to work with any alternate ideas you might have for her.

What philosphy are you taking Dom? Philosophy is like my favorite subject, and if there was actual career paths in it I would probably major in philosophy.

I'm always happy to discuss philosophy, or help if you need something explained. I'm taking a course on epistemology right now. I have a 12 page paper due this week on empiricism (I chose Empiricism cause I couldn't stand to read Descartes anymore). Guh! Essays are the only reason I dislike Philosophy classes. (Which is another reason not to major in it)

Just intro currently. So far I have enjoyed it. I also have two other classes that have a lot to do with parts of philosophy. So in certain areas I'm great at it. Usually I don't need any help but I'll keep you in mind if I need any help.

So how are midterms goin for all our college dudes and dudettes? :)
