Reading Ardiente and Raelle's stuff makes me sad for some reason and I have no clue why... it's really sweet and stuff, but for some reason when I read it I just got really sad for no reason...
I am actually not reading it...Just gets me jealous considering Mel and Lang's screwed up relationships.

I don't even think that it's a reaction to that.
I occasionally have weird reactions to things.
One time when I was younger I got this image of an animal from Billy Hatcher in my mind and it made me sad like this too. I actually made myself cry and get out of the job I was supposed to be doing. XD
I guess it's just a teenage hormone thing. :/

what if I take improved familiar?
I just finished with final stats combining the mods from familiar and animal companion (with the valet and spirit guide archetypes)I'm thinking I'm going to name him either Archimedes or Icarus

ah right, Icarus works then

Still no. The base creature is a dumb bird with some interesting extras. It's still got more oomph than a regular familiar and I'm not making you take the feat....cause I don't really care about feats. Unless there's some overpowered mechanic I want to check. But most of the time I check feats like I check skill ranks.
And I'm sure being a familiar/animal companion already gives it a lot of cool abilities anyways.

I got a sort of mixed fealings from it, I mean, I got: awwwe that's so adorable
but it was mixed with: awwwwwwwwwweeeee that could have been meeeeeee
Yeah, I can see that. At some point Raelle and Dave are gonna have to have a very uncomfortable conversation.

yeah, but there's a fair bit of overlap.
I was asking, saying that something similar happens to this specific firebird, similar to what happens to a familiar who has the celestial or infernal or vampiric abilities grafted onto them, maybe being a side effect of the dark pacts that I took to get some of my other powers.like he got a more powerful firebird because an imp would have been too ovbious

![]() |

yes, didn't want to step on any toes, my powers are similar and are called the same thing, but they work different.

lynora |

It's not. :)
What's the relation? :P
(JK, but SRS.)
Cousins. Not very close or well-acquainted as both of them were kept out of sight as much as possible. The family's thinking is that maybe it'll be okay if nobody ever finds out what total freaks the girls are....Archena is closer to being able to pass for normal so is favored a little bit. They've likely met once or twice at family functions, but that's about it.

Serrin Surya |

I'm your dark, also locked away, shadowy cousin.
I was originally going to make this a totally different character, complete with my own custom race, but when Lyn mentioned mutated firebirds, I decided it would be a lot of fun and rather interesting to make her one of them instead.

Monkeygod |

Nope, Nico is an entirely different PC, based on the character Nico Minoru from the Runways comics. Her and Serrin are at the top of the list of PCs to get ready, but since Lyn said she wanted to have the firebirds sort of in game by Monday, I moved Serrin up slightly.

I want to move on too, but this is a community game, ya know.
We could fill pages of fun convo if this was the Mel and Tybs game, but that would get stale pretty fast, no? ;)

Speaking of Kodjack, may as well mention that it's probably around the time since I last posted that anything arcane around the immediate area of where he's sitting will start to be affected. Arcane lights will slightly dim, any protective gear the headmaster has won't actually lose potency, but may make him feel less secure, and anything else that he'd sense would be slightly altered. Even he himself may feel a little off, kind of like when you know you're not sick, but something just isn't right inside.
In other words, nothing is permanently reduced in potency, but the magic is fading away as he "eats" it. Unless he spends hours upon hours in there, the magic in the objects around will return to full strength.

This keeps being pushed as more than mere 'hinderence'.
Remember, attended objects have resists. Do not bring absolutes into a game setting without the details written up and vetted. I'm pretty sure that's a fast track to annoying and potentially worse.
Am I missing something that was shared on this?
Not looking to be a jerk, but predicting this could get ugly without clear definition.
Anyone else worried at all, or just my paranoia going over board here?

FireclawDrake |

I think it may be your paranoia going overboard here Dami. It may help to reimagine the ability slightly.
Let us assume for the moment, that everything that is 'magical' is sourced by a field of ambient magic which exists throughout almost every region of the multiverse. It is this field which powers all spellcasting, magic items, supernatural abilities, etc. This is a fairly common imagining of magic, and there is much to support this being the case for most campaign settings. It gives a reason for magical dead zones (such as the Mana Wastes on Golarion), and also can explain such tropes as leylines, etc.
We can also imagine, therefore, that Kodjack's ability is not actually directly affecting people and items, but rather that he is eating the ambient magic around them. Spellcasters are sensitive to this ambient magic field, which is why they begin to feel 'off'. Magic items struggle to draw enough energy to work, and may eventually have their 'link' to the magical fields broken completely, so that they lose the capacity to 're-charge' out of the ambient magic, making them permanently drained.
Now, let's assume that magical items and spellcasters could in fact resist this draining of the ambient magic around them (for whatever reason), we can then put forth that Kodjack's abilty is simply passive and requires a save every round. Since there is a 1 on the dice (automatic failure on saves), then /everyone/ will always have a minimum failure chance of 5%, meaning the drain will eventually effect them, no matter what.
Does it help to imagine it in that way?

Damiani |

I don't have any issue with the imagination component, it's the rule aspect that throws me for something described as hindrance (which I assumed was for him, not magic using others).
Your explaining by way of the failure due to a 1, makes sense, or rather, helps a ton. If it is or has a dispel like nature, then, treating as a dispel is clear cut, even a gradual building one.
The only big issue I have, is the apparent (perhaps in how Kodjack's ability is being presented, repeatedly) no way to resist manner thus far.
Then again, this could stem from my loathing of similar ability that 2nd Edition Barbarians had from Unearthed Arcana days.
Typically, those guys didn't last long as soon as they were discovered due to the similar ability.
Just saying, and I know Lynora weighed in previously, it isn't meant to be hugely powerful.
While I'm ranting, if he's supposedly draining the magic into himself (right?), what's happening to him? How's the school reacting to the leeching affect? Will the wards trigger since it's considered an attack? Etc. etc.
Some things throw me off, mostly due to the legalities in the existing system-- not the creative aspect. Ain't got a problem there.
Hope this helps. Please note, it certainly isn't going to prevent me from interacting, etc. but, if there's ever any assumption of automatic draining, we're going to rolls. That's what saving throws are for after all.
Cheers.

I understand your concerns, trust me. I can assure you that my intentions are benign; I just want Kodjack to be a unique entity in his own right, while allowing for him to have an interesting story built in this universe. What I'm going for right now is something along the lines of that while he has to adapt to the school, the school, in turn, has to adapt to him. If there wasn't a struggle, it wouldn't be fun, at least to me. How that plays out is up to the story, which I am eager to get going. If at any point, something seems too strong about him, please, by all means, bring it up; I'm willing to work things out so that everyone is happy. :)
Only problem I'm having right now is that I can't put my words as eloquently and cohesively as everyone else seems to be able to do for me. >.<

lynora |

Some people tend to be brief in everything they say (Ie me)
No-one seems to have a problem with that. (Execpt me, about myself. I'm trying to do better.)
You've improved a lot in that area. Now that you've started including descriptions of the physical actions of your characters more it really helps. :)

Hey DB3, I know you're into posting with your profile PC's but could Pyry and Cameron get some time in the light too? :P
