"Me is agreeing with Pooka," Xûll says grimly, "Chumly, can you please be checking for traps before we are to be going in?" The big Shoanti moves into position, waiting patiently for their investigator to do his thing.

Chumley (SOP) lumbers over to the door and gives it his "proper once over", then settles back to let the front-liners have the door, assuming there aren't any traps to be found.

There isn't anything that we can see from across the way, is there? I'm assuming there's a big room immediately to the right of the "To First Floor", but I wasn't sure if there would be anything visible from where we're at now

"The exhaustive approach seems befitting of a mission to clear an entire manor of anything noteworthy so go ahead," Diri suggests, the manor starting to unnerve her slightly.

These thin men have to be somewhere. There's a finite area in which to hide...

Chumley regarding the room directly west of you - I made that spoiler a bit too big but the door way is open like the ballroom was open but there is a wall just inside so all you see is an open doorway with a wall just beyond it. Would it help if I numbered the rooms?

As the pathfinder approach they see a small windowed door on the eastern wall. It looks out onto a rooftop garden. please feel free to remove the semi-circle spoiler to the east also The pathfinders once again walk in to a better then average bedroom. This posh room contains a large mirror and an armoire.

Pooka:
Luna starts to circle the room and heads towards the door as if someone was blowing her whistle.

"Tilly is blowing the whistle!" Pooka shouts as Luna gets restless beneath him.

"Go Girl! Yah!" he says, spurring the dog on and not waiting for the others. They were fast enough that he knew they would be right behind him.

With all haste, Pooka rockets back down the hallway and down the curved stairs, his heart racing as fast as Luna's paws beat at the ground beneath them. He tightens his grip on his lance, ready to put it to use, piercing whatever denzien may be threatening the little girl.

I think my heart is racing too...

Chumley gives a sigh of resignation as Pooka goes rushing off. That little girl will be the death of us yet. Calmly he mutters, "Bottoms up, Chums" as he seizes a mixer from his belt and drinks an Extract of Expeditious Retreat and goes bounding off at supernatural speed.

(60'movement. I think that gets me to the bottom of the steps in a single Move. Not sure if we're in combat movement or not, but it's a Standard / Move for me.)

Without words, Xûll races off behind Pooka with his hammer drawn. He takes the steps two at a time on his way down, almost falling as he goes in his haste to find Tilly. You may have killed her parents already, fiends, but there will be no more innocent souls for your harvest... you will have to take mine first.

10 new posts and I'm confused, where I should be.

Targath wastes no time as others rush to the stairs. "Dicks, fastest is going DOWN!" He leads an example by jumping over the railing and landing on the floor below.

Acrobatics (jump down, avoid damage, DC 15): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15 Spot on!

After his expertly done jump, Targath lands on his feet and rushes over to the closet at best possible speed. "GIRL! GIT OVER HERE NOW! OPEN THIS BLOODY DOOR!"

Route laid about on the map. 10 feet over the edge, then 15 feet down, then 30 feet on the 1st floor, making it a total of 55 feet.

Targath rips open door to see Tilly siting up, empty water skin next to her, crumb covered furs bunched in her lap, sucking her thumb,. She removes the thumb with a "Pop', then puts her pointer finger in her mouth and sucks on that before removing it with another 'Pop'.

See looks at the large Shoanti, "Gotta pee. Who's gonna take me?"

Targath is clearly very irate by this interruption and tightens his fists. Unless someone acts quickly, the shoanti might erupt into a tantrum. No one wants to see a big, grown man go on a tantrum.

If no one else gets to Targath before he opens his mouth (please do get there before he does):

"What the f!##, kid?!" Targath says the best things in front of a child. "You make us all come running to you and you've just gotta pee?! Well you are in a closet already, make it a water closet! We're on a demon hunt, damnit!" Targath slams the door shut once again and turns to see the rest of the group glare at him angrily. "What's with the faces, pussies?"

Chumley rushes up with supernatural speed, not even breathing heavily as he comes to a halt and surveys the situation with a clinical eye.

Human-spawn, visibily unharmed. Targath, slightly bruised bully. No immediate cause for danger or concern. Who should help Till relieve herself? Probably Pooka. He looks over at the halfling that is presumably getting there around the same time, with a raised eyebrow then turns to the girl. "Till, you just scared all of us to death. Well, most, I would wager. We're trying to help find your parents." He sighs, "Though if needed, I can take you." There's a slightly haunted look in his eyes.

Don't suppose we found a chamber pot in any of the bedrooms?

The Exchange

Male Human (Shoanti) Level 5, #-3

Strange that suddenly she needs us to help her pee. She cannot have had much to drink, but I doubt this is her first time since getting into the closet that she has needed to. We must be careful... oh... and... "Sweet Nethys, me has just been realizing that we are to have been locking child in her own latrine before..." The Shoanti is genuinely contrite at this.

"Worry not child," Xûll comes in and gives her a bit hug, "That is not what we were to be giving you the whistle for, but me is understanding. You are having adults in life now. It is being too cold to be peeing outside, though... and perhapsing too dangerous also."

Xûll upends the dining room table and positions it like a privacy screen.

"Be peeing on floor, Diri is having magics to be cleaning up," Xûll nods at the gnome, "And we are to have been making bigger stains than urine with our own bloods earlier."

I don't want to split the party to take a kid to pee, nor let her out of sight. Hopefully the 'table screen' is a reasonable alternative.

Assuming potty time goes well:

"Tilly, perhapsing leaving you alones was not such good idea. You should be following of us and staying at good distance at back with me," the man says so in a tone that will brook no argument from his companions, "No more closets for Tilly."

Xûll won't hear objections, but his player will. Probably best for RP if we just keep her with us so we can watch over her properly.

I also believe it was Xull's beautiful description of cold, pure water that made me actually yearn for a drink when I read it.

Tilly looks at them incredulously. "You all pee where you sleep? That's gross. Don't eat or drink since Mother and Pa and Tarcey went gone."

Listening to Targath yell at her, she begins to sob again. "Didn't mean to make you all mad. Just was scared to go pee by myself. Case the thin men come again. I'm sorry. I won't blow the whistle again. Even if the thin men come. I promise I won't. Just want to find Mother and Pa and Tarcey."

Honestly no need to RP a child peeing - let's handle that off screen. So, she is done and ready to go - is she coming with you or back to the closet? Additionally due to the timing of the whistle, you have not 'searched' the room you came from. The timing of the whistle was you saw what was in it, but did not perception search it. So if you will: Tilly - should I stay or should I go? and where too next? Rule of 2 and all :-)

Pooka is relieved at first to find the girl ok, and then annoyed at the interruption of their work. He does his best to hide his annoyance though, and Xull snaps him out of it.

"Yes, perhaps you should be coming with us. I admit I cannot say what could be more dangerous. The fact that you are still alive in this house is amazing at all. You hang onto the whistle for now. Finish your business, and then lets get back to what we were doing."

Pooka weathers the cold stare from Targath, shrugging his shoulders as if to say, What do you want us to do? This was not part of the plan.

Bring her along! Lets head back up to the room we couldn't finish searching properly. Might as well go to each of the rooms in their new numerical order. Still have a gut feeling that Tilly's parents are in the basement. My curiosity about the "thin men" is red-lining...

The Pathfinders open the door to #2 & #3 twin guard towers. Both are open air turrets rimmed by crenelations. They would have offered a great view of the countryside but for the raging storm outside.

If Pa is strong enough to do something about it, then he likely doesn't need our help... Pooka keeps his irritated thought to himself. The girl is alone and scared, and it's not his place to judge. Maybe he will wait until later to remind her that that tone is no way to treat someone who is helping you avoid death and dismemberment.

"Process of elimination right? I'm guessing we are going to find something ugly behind this door. Tilly, stay out of the way."

Pooka stands up in his stirrups to get a human's perspective on the rest of the balcony as they walk around the corner. He watches Chumley go through the paces, and grips his lance as Targath and Xull open the door.

Moved the spoiler to try to find the doorway and realized that it covered an odd-shaped area. I've adjusted Chumley and Targath's positions (I hope that's okay) and added two more spoilers for the other rooms.

"Me is being ready to go through other doors, and me is happy to open when you have checked, Chumley," Xûll looks back at Tilly, "Please be staying in backs. Me is not wanting you to be getting hurt." He does not blame the child for her outburst. She was alone for gods know how long and scared. She may well (from all accounts) be an orphan too. Hopefully that anger does not get her killed.

Thnak Xull - removed all the spoilers as I was planning on taking this as a one shot.

As the pathfinder begin to search the last room, they are in what could only have been the manor's guest quarters. Instead of private bedrooms, complete with resplendent furniture, these many rooms are filled with cots pushed close together. Garbage is strewn about in this messy area.

Pooka is updated to level 5. We don't have the chronicle yet for SMM so I'm not entirely sure if I will be spending gold or not.

Here are the highlights for you GM_TheBobJones:

Pooka now has Banner - Gives everyone a +2 moral bonus to saves vs Fear, and a +1 to hit while charging as long as they can see me and are within 60 feet. Pooka's banner is his Surcoat, and Luna has a matching version, which is emblazoned with the eagle of the Liberty's Edge faction.

Pooka received 2 feats at 5th level - Took Power Attack and Wheeling Charge (From the Cities of Golarion supplement, which I purchased just for this feat). Wheeling charge allows me to take 1 turn up to 90 degrees at some point in my charge. The attack can happen anytime during the charge, as ride-by-attack is one of the pre-reqs.

Luna also received another feat, and I took Improved Overrun. So here is a question. I believe I should be able to charge and attack, and Luna should be able to perform an Overrun maneuver also. I looked at the rules and searched the forums for anything that says I can or can't specifically, and there doesn't appear to be anything, at least that I could find.

I generally never have Luna act, because more often than not I am using a reach weapon and she can't. I hadn't thought of using Overrun, but I would think it should be possible, since I can Ride-By-Attack to continue moving after my attack has happened. Overrun is a combat maneuver that can be performed as part of a charge action.

I wanted to ask about it first to avoid any confusion during the game. I think it is legal, but just want to make sure we are all on the same page first.

Liberty's Edge

Male CG Halfling Cavalier (Gendarme) 9.1 | HP: 85/85 | AC: 26 (13 Tch, 25 FF) | CMB: +12, CMD: 24 (26 Bull Rush) | F: +11, R: +7, W: +6 (+2 vs Fear) | Init: +1 | Perc: +5, SM: +4 | Speed 15ft (40ft mounted) | Daily Abilities: Challenge: 3/3, Danger Ward: F – R – W | Active conditions: Mounted

Overrun from PRD, for reference:
As a standard action, taken during your move or as part of a charge, you can attempt to overrun your target, moving through its square. You can only overrun an opponent who is no more than one size category larger than you. If you do not have the Improved Overrun feat, or a similar ability, initiating an overrun provokes an attack of opportunity from the target of your maneuver. If your overrun attempt fails, you stop in the space directly in front of the opponent, or the nearest open space in front of the creature if there are other creatures occupying that space.

When you attempt to overrun a target, it can choose to avoid you, allowing you to pass through its square without requiring an attack. If your target does not avoid you, make a combat maneuver check as normal. If your maneuver is successful, you move through the target's space. If your attack exceeds your opponent's CMD by 5 or more, you move through the target's space and the target is knocked prone. If the target has more than two legs, add +2 to the DC of the combat maneuver attack roll for each additional leg it has.

Portraits | Tactical | Hollow Mountain

@ Pooka Wow quite the bramble of rule interpretations for that one. I thank you for bringing this up now, and I expect you to get some table variation. Lots of good GMs in this game so please feel free to weigh in.

So Pooka is mounted on Luna, and would like to attack the BBEG with Spirited Charge and Ride by Attack. The BBEG is closer than double their mounted speed, and Pooka/Luna can move through allied squares, and make a 90 degree turn with each part of that turn being at least 10 feet.

From what I have read, both Pooka and Luna are currently charging, so all AC and to hit modifiers apply to their entire action.

So in my interpretation, your lance attack happens first, as it has reach. So resolve your attack first.

Then you want Luna to make an Overrun attempt. Since you have ride by attack the only benefit I see is to exceed the target's CMD by 5 to knock them prone. reward

But if she fails, your movement stops. risk

So Luna is a +7 CMB, +9 with charge. To give you a frame of reference, Savash from our last scenario has a CMD of 21 at tier 6-7. Luna would need a 17 to hit a CMD 26 to knock him prone, and a 12 to not stop your movement.

Conversely, this all become a moot point

PRD wrote:

Which would be challenging on PbP because it would need to be declared before Luna makes her attack.

Good point.... I'm glad you brought up the math. It might not make sense to do it a whole lot... Yet.

Luna now has the improved over run feat, which means that enemies cannot choose to avoid her. In a couple of level she will be able to choose to take the trample feat, which lets her make an attack as she over runs an opponent.

Party buffs should affect Luna also, right? Things like inspire courage, etc? There may be ways of boosting that CMB to make the over run more enticing.

I'll have to read through that thread when I have more time....

Mounted combat rules are kind of a mess (and I have a level 13 cavalier myself!). Most feats/options simply don't work without a little reasonable leeway.

A bit of opinion:

The Improved Overrun feat removes the ability for a target to avoid your attempt (which is sometimes unfortunate, because the important part of the overrun is the ability to move through a square)- -knocking prone is typically just a bonus.

I would let you Ride-by-Attack directly at a foe, make your charging lance attack (which typically will obliterate him anyway) and continue in a straight line giving your mount an overrun attempt to "keep going." If the attempt fails, your Ride-By ends in the spot adjacent to the enemy.

Wheeling Charge adds another piece to the puzzle. If you make your turn before the lance attack, no big deal. But you can also make the (up to) 90 degree turn as you strike. Or after. I would want to know the intended path (including where the lance attack takes place and where the mount makes an attack and/or overrun attempt) before any of the parts are resolved.

This gives the GM a chance to adjudicate, decide if the foe would avoid an overrun (barring the feat preventing them), then go about rolling.

As usual, expect table variation.

To make things better (and more complicated) look at Charge Through when you get a later feat.

I have a distinct dislike towards what I call "pet classes", and this includes mounted characters. Therefore I have very little knowledge how the actually work; if I did, I'd be superanal about them, and force every bit of Handle Animal and Ride check in question to make the player's life miserable. So I won't be voicing any of my opinions about the matter.

*ahem*

I have a rather limited pool of characters to use in this particular endeavor, which is why I've chosen to pick a character of mine I swore to keep as a no-GM-xp character. Furthermore, I created the most obnoxious characteristics to him, the most hateful persona I could come up with. So with that in mind please do remember that none of the opinions and ideas Targath voices out loud do not represent me in any way. If you feel offended by my character, it only tells I've done a good job.

So what is Targath like?:
He's blatantly racist, ridiculing every known race (including humans based on their origin) and being wary of other shoanti. That will be interesting, since Targath is an exile from the Sklar-quah (Sun clan), a xenophobic militaristic tribe. Furthermore, he's a brute, impolite, and curses every given second. His only motivation for completing the missions with success and making "friends" among other pathfinders is to impress his beloved Zarta Dralneen. She's the sole reason he is associated with the Dark Archives; he could've give a s&+~ about the archives and their prized treasures.

tl;dr He's Gordon Ramsay from Hell's Kitchen.

Also, he gets a wand of infernal healing for 2 PP.

The Exchange

Male Human (Shoanti) Level 5, #-3

Targath and I could have some... interesting times together. Particularly if he likes the sound of a touch (just a touch) of assisted patricide.

Also, Xûll gets a wand of infernal healing for 'free' (using a boon I got last scenario to swap my wand of healing out for it - much more useful given infernal healing is on my spell list). Tee hee. I have a spell llist.

Speaking of, I still need to level up. Will try for today.

Another forewarning: Targath has an uncanny habit of interrupting discussions that are going badly. This involves a javelin, quick draw feat, and an attack roll. He has done this "maneuver" twice; both times it was the better, actually.

One time the conversation was at a dead end, there was no chance of improving the attitude any longer, so Targath acted on instinct and made the first attack.

The second time Targath and his fellows were approached by another ship. It was not clear whether they were hostile or not, but still Targath just promptly threw a javelin at the other captain. Fortunately the pathfinders found out they were going to board the ship and attack anyways; thanks to Targath they got the advantage of first draw and quickly erased the threat. The other players' reaction to the "Targath maneuver" was priceless though, a collective "NO!".

Targath's impulsive and erratic.

I forgot about one special ability Targath has, but which I haven't used not even once because it must be the worst worded ability in Paizo's history (and that's saying a lot!).

Freebooter's Bond
At 4th level, a freebooter forms a bond with her crewmates. This bond allows her to spend a move action to grant her allies extra combat prowess when they work as a team. All allies within 30 feet who can see or hear the freebooter gain an additional +2 bonus on attack rolls when flanking with the freebooter or with another ally affected by this ability. This ability replaces hunter’s bond.

A) Times per day?
B) Duration?
C) Untyped bonus?

As it stands now it'd allow Targath to use that the first thing in the morning and grant everyone an additional +2 to attack when flanking. Paizo has issued absolutely nothing to explain what the ability SHOULD do. If it is identical to Hunter's Bond (ranger ability, which sucks tremendously) in terms of times per day and duration, it sucks so much I'll forget it ever existed.

The Exchange

Male Human (Shoanti) Level 5, #-3

Xûll is updated now. Thanks for your patience, John!

@Targath:

Given the style of Freebooter's bond, from the wording I'd say it works similar to a teamwork feat after the move action so:

A) Unlimited.
B) Whenever you spend the move action to give the bonus (so 1 round)... similar to the cavalier's tactician style abilities.
C) Yes, untyped.

... until and unless a developer clarifies! Or until John disagrees. :-)

If anyone has objections, I can recruit more. Damien has said he has another potential candidate, if you wouldn't mind PMing him/her to gauge interest. I think it is safe to say that you do not want to play the tier 6-7 with the 4 party adjustment?

By the way, putting my finishing touches on my Investigator (they're almost, a rogue with a bit of arcane, right?)

Great let me know when you are ready, post in the gamplay thread and then we are good to go!

Posting up his stats after dinner, but I figured I'd give an introduction to hopefully get things rolling and test the waters to make sure Chumley isn't too over the top ;)

He's a level 3 Oni-spawn Tiefling Investigator (Empiricist), that is the world's lowest Charisma Face (thanks to a liberal amount of Intelligence replacing Charisma features.) He wasn't originally going to be quite so ugly, but while trying to find an avatar I stumbled on one that just... fit.

Welcome, Chumley! Great to have another Confirmationite on board!

And posted. I need to clean up the formating a bit (especially skills) but it should be hopefully showing up.

I do have a few "non-standard" abilities for people that haven't been around tieflings or investigators:

Abilities Wall of Text:

Fiendish Sprinter: +10' movement during a charge, run, or withdraw action
Maw: 1d6 bite attack
Prehinsile Tail: Can retrieve small stowed objects as a swift action

The following checks can have their usual ability modifier replaced by Int:
Disable Device
Perception
Sense Motive
Use Magic Device checks.
Diplomacy checks (Gather Information and Persuasion)
Bluff checks (to convince others that a lie is true, not feint)

Potion Glutton: Can drink a potion as a Swift Action (not really useful now, but when I get my 2nd level extracts...)

My interpretation of Student of Philosophy and Ceaseless Observation is that between the two they cover pretty much everything you can do with the Diplomacy skill other than day job checks. If there's a situation you would rule it wouldn't cover, let me know :)

I also have one extract of Heightened Awareness. Not sure if I need to have that active when a relavent knowledge comes up (like examinging something) or if I can use that before making my check.

@ Chumley That you for the wall of text. I have not run a Tiefling as I have no boon, and I was surprised to see that Blood of Fiends and oni-spawn was PFS legal. Congrats for having a boon and making a neat concept character.

As for the first ruling, SoP and CO seems to cover the Diplomacy skill. I agree with your assessment.

For Heightned Awarness, if we are not in rounds, let me if you want to take your extract first. If we are in rounds, you would need to specify that you are taking it before making the roll. Once you do take it though, make sure to include that in your current conditions as it has a 30 minute duration.

Buckle up - here we go.

3+3+4+5+5=20/5 = 4. Tier 3-4 no adjustment as you all know.

Just for reference, can I get a 'standard marching order'. 2 per row, would you like front line, middle, or rear?

Also please check the Campaign Tab for GM rolls, and make sure I have your correct modifiers.

Diri will gladly cover the six- -unless someone explicitly wants it.

One thing to note: Diri talks fast but moves slowly (15ft speed). You'll notice that after a few day of travel.

Related: Diri will have a chance to re-prepare spells to deal with devils, so I'll get a list shortly.

Prepped spells, daily preparation:

Outside Absalom, Diri does her deific obedience, and casts endure elements each morning.

Cleric (Theologian) Spells Prepared (CL 5th; concentration +8)
3rd—fireball[D] (DC 16), fireball (DC 16), invisibility purge
2nd—bear's endurance, produce flame[D], communal protection from evil[UC], lesser restoration
1st—bless, burning hands[D] (DC 14), burning hands (DC 14), endure elements, weapons against evil
0 (at will)—detect magic, read magic, spark[APG] (DC 13), stabilize

Where have I heard that before? Oh every time! LOL - you are already in the front on my map, just needed to query the group.

Diri - thanks for the explicit list of prepared spells. I would expect nothing less from a cleric of Brigh. :)

Targath will always march first. Preferably 10 feet ahead of everyone.

He's stupid.

EDIT: Targath's diplomacy is -2. Obviously.
Targath's sense motive is +1.
Targath's intimidate is -2. No one takes him seriously.

Thank you. I like how you are placing role play over sound mechanics.

I do have to say that I am not sure that Targath's abrasiveness will not become too much as the adventure progresses. Let us remember the Primary Rule of Gaming, which is have fun. I know you are having fun role playing him, and as a neutral GM, I too find him interesting.

I just don't want your character to have fun, and inhibit the enjoyment for the remainder of the table. Remember this is a shared experience.

To add on, Delzden found himself in conflict with the party last adventure, but he emulated 'good' characteristics whereas the other characters were a bit 'murder hobo-ey'. That to me is positive conflict. I liked it so much I rolled up a LG paladin that I am playing as a partial-pacifist. I think the party is getting frustrated because I have been grappling/overrunning all the bad guys and they just want to murder hobo.

If this came across judgmental, please note that it that was not the intent. As a GM I want to make sure that all my players have a fun experience.

Carry on boys!
