The air was cool and the sky was clear, sparkling with millions of tiny lights as far as the imagination could stretch. Pooka’s memories of the first night the slave hunters came to his home as a child were seared into his mind, every detail as vivid as if it had happened the night before. The smell of the rain soaked fields, the way his hair stood on end before the riders even came into view, the sounds of the chaos as they tore apart his home, searching for something they claimed belonged to their masters. Actually not someTHING, but someONE. It was only by the grace of Cayden Cailean that the poor souls hiding in the narrow spaces between false walls of his home were not found, and also that Pooka’s family wasn’t simply taken from their home to replace the lost slaves the hunters had been searching for. Chelaxian’s weren’t known for their pleasantries or kind hearted dispositions.
In secret circles, to the few who know of such things, the Bladespinner family has held a long tradition of being a safe haven for slaves on the grueling trail of escape to freedom. For 4 generations, not one slave who passed through the Bladespinner hovel was ever re-captured, not that the task was any less dangerous for its track record of success. Pooka’s first experience with the vicious men who’s task it was to reclaim “lost property” only served to sear in his heart his passion to see every slave freed someday, particularly his kin. Hearing the stories of the multitude of slaves who passed through his home for so many years has kindled a fire in his heart for his kin who suffer at the hands of evil minded men and creatures.
With that fire burning in his heart, Pooka bent his entire youth to the pursuits that would enable him to be the freedom fighter he desperately desired to become. His natural affinity to working with animals helped his family develop a clever “early warning system” for would-be slave hunters, consisting of several of the family’s working dogs, 2 squirrels and a small flock of pigeons that never left the farm. His proclivity to working with the animals also lead to him being remarkably skilled at riding the dogs he trained.
There was one other particular day critical to the shaping of young Pooka Bladespinner's dreams, that being the day his family was visited by a real Pathfinder from the Andoran faction. Word had passed to this pathfinder of the success of the family and he arrived to present a secret award and reward for the family’s service to the ideals of freedom from slavery and tyranny. It was the day that his dreams of becoming a freedom fighter of world renown suddenly had a clear path, and there would be no turning from it.
