Baslwief is technically under Korvosan law, which does consider grave robbing illegal. Necromancy itself, however, is not illegal (although it's highly despised, especially by priests of Pharasma, who will treat it as though it's illegal). In practice in Baslwief, of course, you can get away with whatever you have the strength to get away with, grave robbing or necromancy included. Although Sheriff Cubbin is no better than a thug himself, he is a well-known enemy of Balabar Smenk and anyone associated with Smenk. He probably wouldn't have any qualms about locking up Filge if he knew Smenk and Filge were friends.

As always, the wand of cure light wounds ("heal-stick") is a necessity, especially here were Venedictus isn't a dedicated healer (very few cleric levels). Of course, if a certain post on the main board is to be believed and followed, perhaps he should just take 10 levels of rogue and be doing 1d8+1+5d6 with each of these spells.

I'm curious about that, too. Sounds like it's using sneak attack with cure/inflict spells, which I suppose you can do, but really, why not use sneak attack with...I dunno...a weapon? Surely by the time you're 11th level (rogue 10/cleric 1), you can have a weapon doing better than 1d8+1 damage. So, point us to this post so that we can understand what it's all about.
On another note: I'm not going to be able to post much tomorrow, maybe once in the morning and then not again until late evening. Back to normal on Monday.

The "Sneak-Healing" thread, where somebody is suggesting that since you can use inflict spells to get sneak attack damage against a living opponent, and cure spells to get sneak attack damage against an undead, you could use cure spells to get sneak attack "healing" against a living opponent, as in cure light wounds by a cleric 1/rogue 1 does 1d8+1+1d6.
Then there's all sorts of nonsense about coup de grace healing out of combat for automatic double healing.
Ben managed a polite response on the thread, which was more than I could do.
Here. Some of the ideas people seem to get because there isn't a specific rule saying 'no' sometimes boggles my mind.

WOW is right. I think I feel dumber for having read that. I was kind of amused that that creepy bastard Shuriken thought it was a good idea. Kinda figures...
Heh. I'm open-minded enough to accept that there are legitimate uses of acupuncture in treating many things, but the idea of having the party fighter down on the ground with half his intestines ripped out by a dragon's claws, and the party rogue comes along and heals it over by sticking some pins in the guy's feet, and then saying it's only an extra-ordinary ability...
Needless to say, Venedictus won't be dipping into rogue levels, and will instead just take Craft Wand at 5th level to bang out heal sticks for the group.

Ok, it's your friendly neighborhood lurker. Just a rant of mine so bear with me.
Why do DMs in PbPs now use the AKA DM when they rp NPCs? Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of using a new profile for an important NPC. I do it in my games as well. It adds some color to the game seeing an image of an npc. But why the AKA DM in the name? Do you think the players will think someone else has hijacked the thread and is posing as the DM if you don't do it? Or they're not bright enough to realize the DM is now playing someone new? When I DM in real life, I don't stop to say, ok, now I'm rping a new npc but don't forget, it's still me. It would make no sense. I've seen it in other games as well and it seems silly. Again, Navior, don't take this personally, just an opinion. Maybe you're just following the trend.
Ok, back to the excellent rping!

            No offense taken.
Mainly, it's because the NPC names have already been taken by someone else. I'm not the first to run these adventure paths on these boards. Since you can't use a name for an alias that someone else has already used, I need to differentiate the name somehow. I'm a bit of a stickler for spelling, so altering the spelling of the name doesn't do it for me.
I noticed another DM using the "AKA DM" format and thought that it was a good solution. I do like that it makes it instantly clear that the DM is posting. It's not that I think the players are too stupid to figure it out. Just running the cursor over the name will show who it's an alias of. I'm quite sure my players would know who it is without the AKA there, but it does avoid any momentary confusion. I actually find it helpful to me sometimes if I have to skim back over several posts to find out whether I've mentioned something already or not. It helps make sure I don't accidentally skip over one of my posts. :)
Mainly though, it's a convenient way for me to use the NPC's name and still be able to have a unique alias name.
I can't speak for other DMs naturally.
Hope that explains things to your satisfaction. Glad you're enjoying the game!
Edit: Ha! Ninja'd by Bear. :)

This may sound like a stupid question, but did we have a plan for actually getting inside the Mine? I don't think these guards will let us waltz in there. I thought we were going to either
1. Wait until nightfall and sneak in, or
2. Try to look for another entrance inside the Mines.
If all else fails, Freddie can use Ghost Sound to lure the guards away from the entrance, if necessary.

Hey, all. I gots some bad news. I said it would happen... and it did. Self-fulfilling prophecy, right?
I don't have enough time to keep up with this game. I'm gonna go ahead and bow out.
Navior, you've done a good job here, and it was fun to play. My pbp eyes were larger than my metaphorical pbp stomach, as it were.
I'll be watching the game, though, and I hope it continues to go well.

Alas, you did indeed predict it when you joined, but at least you lasted this long and got all the way through the first adventure!
It's been great having you in the game and I hate to lose you, but I totally understand how busy life can get and sometimes something's gotta give.
Indeed, I think everyone seems a bit strapped for time at the moment, given how much the pace of the game has slowed down. But no worries. I am willing to keep going if everyone is still interested. I do need to know what your plan for getting into the mine is, though, before I can move things forward (hint, hint). :)
Bear, is there any way you'd like me to handle your character's departure? Heroic death? Tearful farewell? Mysterious disappearance? Eaten by a beargle? ;) If you'd prefer it to be a surprise to the others, feel free to send me an e-mail.
Take care!

This will end well, I am sure, he he.
I don't know, man… pretty big… um… shoes to fill.
Bear, is there any way you'd like me to handle your character's departure?
Either way.
I'll be checking in. Yall have some fun, now.

Nav: It was just pointed out to me that we players have all sort of neglected this game since Ben/Bear left. I'm sorry that we left you hanging like that.
As you may know, Justin, Eric, Ben, and I are all pretty close from our time in the Limbo PbP and Colin's game. As such, those ties do tend to factor in when I consider how to spend my gaming time.
In my own case, running 'Rumble in the Jungle' for those three (we're still en route to the actual start of the AP actually) takes up a great deal of my time. On top of that, Justin/Udaya has started up a game of his own.
Between the two of those, I find myself with very little time to do aught else. Even seeing a few posts popping up in Colin's Fallen/Arcadia game again has me a bit apprehensive as well. I'm just not sure that there's enough 'free time' in my life to go around and still be able to dedicate the level of attention and pacing that I feel a game deserves.
With that said, I think you did a damn fine job of running us thru the Whispering Cairn. I have no complaints there whatsoever. I can't speak for anyone else, but the sole issue for me is one of time management. I'm glad to see that you have some other PbPs going now — you're a good DM and talented too to be able to run more than one at a time!
Good luck with things and thanks again for having run a good game for the five of us. I enjoyed it and getting to play Dara!

Yeah, I have to echo Michael here with the time constraints. I don't make it a practice to drop PbP games usually, but since this one has had a couple of players drop, then I am sorry to say I will drop this game officially too.
As Michael said, you are a great DM, and I really enjoyed taking Fredrik along for the ride. I hope your own Serpent's Skull PbP keeps going strong, and you keep up the great work!
Take care, Navior.

Thanks for dropping in explaining things, guys! I had pretty much assumed that was what was happening. Indeed, just earlier today, there was a post on the OOC thread for my Serpent's Skull game asking what had happened to this group! I answered by explaining that I was pretty certain people just didn't have the time any longer.
I'm sorry to see the game go, but it was great while it lasted. I had a blast! Thank you all for letting me get my start into the world of pbp gaming. You did a great job hooking me in.
Take care all!
