Appearance:
5’8” | 145lbs | 23 yo | Brown eyes, olive skin, black curly hair
UU wears a thick cotton monk's gi in blue over a black, pleated, hakama. Atop both, slung diagonally across her chest, is a simple, almost military, grey cassock of her faith. Slung diagonally the other direction is a finely crafted bow she is never without. The symbol of her faith is on a necklace that is also pinned to her cassock.
Background:
Udaya (“Just call me UU”) was born in a caravan and she has never stopped moving. She is a Varisian nationalist – proud of their long history, proud of their traditions, and proud of the ‘hospitality of the road’ that all Varisians practice. While she was raised to worship Desna and respect Shelyn (as the patron of entertainers), she never fully fit into either church. It was a square peg / round hole scenario. UU’s ‘guiding star’ is more abstract. She worships the values that have made Varisia and Varisians what they are – travel, luck, freedom, artistry, and their famous hospitality toward fellow travelers. [Class: Cleric, Archetype: Varisian Pilgrim, Deity: ‘Spirit’ of Varisia].
It was a chance meeting on the road with a warrior-priestess of Erastil that really cemented UU’s path. She had to be one of the nastiest looking hags UU had ever seen. And her only talents were a gift for sharp-tongued criticism and displaying artistry at delivering a decisive, single-handed, beat-down on a group of highwaymen. Nine Hells thought UU, maybe I can do that!
She left the family caravan and apprenticed with the old lady (Gestalt Combo: Cleric/Monk, Archetype: Zen Archer) for a few years. Though they never saw eye-to-eye on the Gods they served, as fellow Varisians they shared what they had – knowledge, skills, support, and camaraderie.
But as paths do, theirs diverged eventually… UU took what she learned and became a wandering warrior-priestess for the Spirit of Varisia. Any road that sees Varisian caravans, any land that has a Varisian population - is her self-appointed bailiwick to shepherd, heal, and defend. She has spent the last several years roaming all the lands that were part of ancient Thassilon, from Varisia to Numeria.
Her criss-crossing path has meandered through Ustalav many times. That’s how she met Professor Lorrimor (she calls him ‘Doc’). He was on one or another of his expeditions and it turned out to be a little less academic and more combative than he anticipated. He found himself in need of healing and protection. UU offered both. While she didn’t require payment, Doc Lorrimor always insisted… and UU never turned down a coin that could ease her travels or be given to worthwhile causes. Thus their relationship was forged. [Trait: On the Payroll] When Doc wanted a bit of extra offense or defense, a letter from Ravengro would find her in her travels. She was never sure how Doc kept track of her but he certainly had his ways. So, when a letter arrived for her in Nidal, she expected it was just another trek with Doc into some dangerous corner of Ustalav. The smile fell from her face as she absorbed the contents of the letter through several re-readings… Doc is dead.
Within minutes, she had packed her gear, offered an apology to the caravan master, and left. Had she the money, she would have bought a fast horse to get her to Ustalav. As it was, she’d have to walk it or (if lucky) find caravans heading the right way. Unless she sprouted wings, she was going to miss the funeral… but she had to try.
