"It was no trouble. I was in the area, and the internship is very dear to my heart," he says smoothly as he shakes her hand and then goes to sit back down.
He pulls a pen from his breast pocket and clicks it. Suddenly, Bronwyn's mom's conversation in the other room becomes muffled. "There. A lovely little device that will make sure our conversation remains private. Whippoorwill uses a similar device. Have you met her yet? Well, no matter. I'm here to talk about someone else, whom I'm sure you've met. Li Xiu Ying. Alias, Wingblade. A being of my creation."
While he oozes oily confidence and complete control over the situation, he hesitates a moment as he ponders something. Then, finally, he shrugs with a chuckle. "I had wondered how to come across when I decided to meet with you. Shall I play the role of a devoted father meeting the one his daughter fancied for the first time? Or shall I be the scientist fascinated by his experiment yielding new and exciting results?"
He leans forward, a cruel smile on his lips. "Or shall I be the enigmatic villain you think I am?"
Relaxing back in his chair, he takes a sip of his tea. "You see, yesterday Xiu Ying explained to me about how a girl at school had fallen in love with her. You, Ms. Pascal. And while she wanted to reciprocate those feelings, she felt she wasn't capable.
"I set my own traditional feelings aside as a good parent would do. This is the 21st Century, after all. When I pressed her on why she felt that she couldn't love you back, Xiu Ying said she believed the program that made her turned off her capacity for love. And she wants me to help her turn it back on."
He smiles behind his teacup while he studies Bronwyn's reaction. "As a parent, this is heartbreaking. As a scientist, this is fascinating. As someone who constantly finds his actions and motives questioned by heroes, this has... potential."
Buried beneath her disappointment, a part of her felt real guilt that Shayera had told Him about her before Bronwyn had told her own parents anything of the kind, I mean was I supposed to ruin Christmas? but she forced that down. It's not the same.
Bronwyn didn't feign a smile in return; her face stayed carefully neutral as she responded, "I don't think there's anything enigmatic about you. You're a monster and a coward, who's using her as a shield, and even if you've come to enjoy playing house, the lies you fed her don't make you her father.
"What do you want."
A look of annoyance flashes across the Man in the White Coat's features as Bronwyn insults him, but it's gone in an instant and he doesn't rise to the bait.
"I would like to learn more about your ancient friend. I've become intrigued by the potentialities of magic. I'd like to know where he goes. What's there, what can be brought there, and what can be removed from that place.
"The internship offer is a genuine one, though you won't have to go all the way to Rivercrest. You come by to our research center here in Halcyon once or twice a week for a few hours of study, and you won't have to worry about college tuition. Depending on our findings, you may never have to worry about money."
His smile becomes even more unctuous. "And of course, I shall endeavor to make Xiu Ying your devoted lover."
"That's what you came here to offer me? You're disgusting." But the look of revulsion on her face slowly began to soften into confusion, then into pity. "How could you possibly think that I would want that? If you weren't afraid of your masters, if you were in my shoes, would you take an offer like this?
"What have you done to yourself?"
Shaking her head, Bronwyn continued, "I'm never going to help you with your work, but I'm going to give you a chance that you probably don't deserve. Turn aside from all of this. If that means you'll need protection, we'll help you get it. You clearly have a brilliant mind, but you could have much more."
This time the annoyance stays on his face. He shakes his head, disappointed. "I had hoped you would see the value in such an arrangement. But you are as I feared: a silly girl with delusions of good and evil, true love, and all that nonsense. Go ahead and play dress-up and punch bad guys. I will continue to do the real work that will benefit humanity itself.
"Those feelings of love you have? Chemicals in your brain. Chemicals I can duplicate in Xiu Ying for your benefit. But no, I expect you'll go on thinking that 'love will conquer all' like some sort of fairy tale. And you will reap nothing but misery for becoming infatuated with a lab experiment."
He crosses his legs as he puts an elbow on the arm of the chair and rests his chin in his hand. He drums his fingers on his cheek once. "I do have a brilliant mind. And I am offering to put it to use for you in exchange for a simple commitment. So, I give you one more chance: will you reconsider?"
The Man in the White Coat twists his mouth in distaste. "You lack perspective."
Sighing, he stands up. "As her father, I am forced to wish you well. However, I fail to see how you will succeed as a couple, given the subject's asexuality, inability to become aroused, and how her pleasure centers are directly wired to her flight-or-fight responses. It's a shame we couldn't come to an agreement where I might temper or reverse some of those features."
He clicks the pen once more, then announces in a clear voice, "I'm sorry again for your decision. Best of luck to you." Bronwyn's mother rushes in, hearing the end of the meeting, and he shakes her hand. "Thank you for the tea. I'm sorry our internship isn't... compatible with Ms. Pascal's interests."
The Man turns to leave.
She was just going to let it lie, let her daughter tell her all about it if she wanted to. But this internship had been a fake before, so this was probably about Wingblade, and that meant two things: It was probably more dangerous than Bronwyn would ever admit, and Bronwyn was never going to tell her anything she didn't absolutely have to.
"It sounds like he was really disappointed you turned him down. Was it the right choice? You went through all three reasons?"
Bronwyn abruptly jerked out of whatever haze she'd dropped into. "Yeah. Definitely. There might be... It's not a good offer."
Whenever Marian was looking at squeezing another consulting gig or board position onto her plate, there were always a lot of little details to consider, but she was great at reconciling the irreconcilable and finding an extra few hours everyday, so she always used three criteria for the Big Picture:
1) How much are they asking?
2) How much are they offering?
3) Is the work worth doing?
She trusted this daughter's judgment, so all she asked was "Are you still interested in something in the field? It would help diversify your applications in a couple years. You know how much I love Patrick, but I don't want you to go through what he did. You can't just count on your arm."
"I know."
Damnit. Bronwyn always pushes back on that. She's not thinking about this like some internship. Marian wasn't sure how she knew, but she knew, It's not real. It's more superhero Defenders nonsense. They must want to give her powers, or want to recruit her to AEGIS like Patrick. And even if she just said no today, I can tell she really wants what he offered.
"Sweetie, if you have any regrets, just remember, you don't have to do this work to stay close to any... Friends who might be part of it. The internship, that is. There are lots of ways to connect to people. Lots of work worth doing too."
Please don't change your mind Bronwyn. Please stay safe baby.
"I know."
"Are you staying here the rest of the day?"

Guys, I come with some sad news.
I've decided that given my recent technological setbacks and increase in IRL responsibilities, I'm going to be withdrawing from the Paizo site as a source of PbP posting. I've had a lot fun here, and learned a lot as well, but I can't create time and energy to update as often as I feel would be fair. It's a new semester, one of my last couple, and I don't the work is going to slow down.
Thanks for everything till now, and sorry for having to drop out with little notice. If you can find a GM to take over, that's fine by me, and as always I hope you all have as much fun as I have had on these boards.
Definitely sorry to hear that, Default. As the only player left from the original batch, I can guess this wasn't the easiest game to run. I'm glad you had fun too, since I've had a blast. Even dying, especially coming back to life, and everything in between.
Whether or not this game will continue depends on the rest of the players, I suppose. I'm still interested in continuing, if we can find someone willing to run, but it'll depend on how many other players are still willing to keep going.

This game was fun. I am sad I didn't get to get in on the Bronwyn love dodecahedron. But... Well, a few weeks ago a game of mine migrated, and another one started with the group I started on here with. And I've kinda been toying with moving there wholly. I think this is the push I needed.
Stalwart, your game was super fun, but, in honesty, I lost the plot like 400 posts ago. It just a lot.

Welp. It's certainly a gut-punch, but only because this has been such a great campaign, and I'd hate to see it go.
I'm definitely up for figuring out a way to continue (though unless I get a sudden resurgence out of Apex it looks like we're down to the Season 2 Trio).

Unfortunately, I have some bad news.
A combination of work-related stuff has lead to me having to take some time off from the forums. I am, in all honesty, going to need to be gone for several months, as I am going to be travelling for extended periods of time (weeks or more) and I'll likely not have good access to the internet.
As I am not someone who would want to have you all sit and wait for me here, I am going to be withdrawing/closing all of my open forum games.
I want to thank everyone who I have had the pleasure to game with over the last couple of years here, as I have immensely enjoyed my time on the forums, and hopefully, once my work stabilizes, I will be able to rejoin the community.
Thank you again for your time and energy, and I am sorry that I won't be able to keep things moving forward in any of the games that I am running.

Given that it is super past the point of actually reaching the plot, the original "Alex's crush on Bran" arc had her mistaking Marco for Beans civilian identity and trying to seduce him. Then everything happened.

Glad to have you join us! Just out of curiosity, how much of the archive-dive did you end up going for?
I literally just tried to find the queer parts. It didn't start off as an archive dive; I was just looking for examples of how moves/rolls come into play when you're not up against a big villain. And then I was curious about the weirdly named spoilers in Discussion. And then my inner slasher took over, and I needed to get more deets on that whole thing ASAP. :x
But I guess to answer the actual question, I went back to the Bran being unable to transform and getting kissed and then kind of skimmed various parts up until the present. I'm a bit more likely to go an read more later; I was torn between curiosity and wanting to get to know the characters more organically if selected.
Makes sense - the intent is definitely that no one will need to go back and read the whole thing. (With the slowly coalescing Character Bible as a quick reference if there's a name dropped that hasn't been reintroduced).
That said, if you want more Bronwyn/Shayera fluff, it's good before the kiss too (IMHO). The romantic stuff is all subtextual, since until Shayera literally kissed her, Bronwyn couldn't let herself even think about it:
This was the beginning of the 'season' where I joined. It starts with Shayera's first date, and rolls pretty much right into her and Bronwyn meeting and flying together for the first time.
There's a lot of great stuff around the time of Shayera's sacrifice too (~ page 22, but no single post is a perfect hop on)
From that point on, the ship really sails itself.

Hi, Kilt! You'll be starting fresh in this universe... though come to think of it, Siphon might be making an appearance at some point -- probably as a villain to begin with. So, let's say you haven't met her yet.
As for your origin, you could say you've been honing your skills in some other town besides Halcyon, and only recently arrived. Or, you can say you have just now put on the kilt and are ready to do battle against evil. Whichever way you think you'd like for Kilt to make your big splash.

Welcome all! We'd been thinking that a few months had passed between the towering robot fights and when we'll get going, so we'll have a little bit of narrative time to fit introductions/initial impressions into.
As for next steps: Even if you have answered the Backstory Questions from your playbook in the recruitment thread, it'd be great if you could put those questions and answers here.
Now, the "When Our Team First Came Together" and "Relationships" questions presuppose that the team has already been working together for a little bit - So we'll use the answers to those as a cheat sheet of good ideas for introductory scenes :)
So are we starting the game with us as strangers then? Like we'll play out our meeting and what-not?

"My dad, Jack MacGregor. He didn't think I'd actually follow through on my dream, but here we are. Now he wants me to be a boring office worker like him. Like I'd ever stoop to that!"
Why do you try to be a hero?
"Because it's what I've always wanted to do. Grandpa got that and made sure I was ready for it. The training, the weapons, it's all thanks to him...or, it was..."
Why do you care about the team?
"Because a soldier is only as good as the brothers beside him. Besides, all the best heroes are part of some team or another, and I'm aiming for that top spot!"
When I first made Shaun here that something bigger was the first sighting of the Black Shuck. Might use that again, never really got to explore it.

Bit of a blend - we're going to use the questions, but since PbP allows for it particularly well, we can use the answers to figure out some scenes that would be fun to see.
In other words we'll use the questions to figure out where we expect the first few scenes to go - though if we find out we were wrong, that works too!
Just an FYI, I intend to have Kaoru running around having everyone think she's a guy. I'm guessing at least some people will figure it out, but it should actually be because your character figured it out and not because you didn't know that's what I was trying to go for.
Abilities: Gadgetry and hacking, power negation
How did you get your powers?
Gadgetry and hacking: A combination of inherited intelligence and spending time with her parents (father [deceased] was an electrical engineer with an interest in mechanics, mother is a software engineer)
Power negation: Unbeknownst to her, when Kaoru started to befriend Pinky, they sent a robot to her house that injected her with an unknown substance while she slept. After the stunt she pulled with her ex-boyfriend, Pinky wanted to nurture her hacking ability because they thought her prank was entertaining and was eager to see what more havoc she could reap with better skills. Instead of enhancing her ability to hack computer systems, this gave Kaoru the ability to hack into people and shut down their powers. Kaoru is currently unaware of this ability.
What do you do for fun?
Play any and all video games. Build gadgets (currently working on building a mini-gundam model with working flight). Sometimes reads, mostly manga or sci-fi/fantasy novels. Hacking into random websites to prank them or just to see if she can.
Who, outside the team, thinks better of you than you do?
Depends on your definition of "better". Pinky sees the potential for great mischief in Kaoru. Kaoru's mom Naomi sees the wonderful girl she used to be and knows that's still inside of her (she's generally confused/sadden by this sudden drastic change both in appearance and personality. But she's also very busy and kind of out of touch with Kaoru, so there was definitely an element of seeing what she wanted to see there). Delphi thinks she's better than who Pinky is trying to turn her into, but they are likewise busy and is working more because they know Pinky isn't to be trusted than because they really know or want to protect Kaoru. Depending on how long Kaoru is supposed to have been at Halcyon High when the game starts (I picture her as being a new kid at school, having only recently moved to the area), she has probably endeared herself to the shop teacher.
Why do you try to be a hero?
At this point, out of fear of Delphi cutting off her access to the internet/taking her life completely offline.
Why do you care about the team?
Without knowing the team, hard to say. I imagine initially she won't. Then it'll be because it provides another way of escaping/keeping her mind occupied. And eventually, it'll be because she cares about the other members and wants to protect them.
We totally broke some major rules to win the fight. What rules did we break? Whose rules were they?
I heard mention of giant robot(s?).... Find an old, still mostly functional robot, reprogram it, and use it for a sweet gundam battle? Or I guess a gundam on whatever we're fighting battle. That seems like it'll break somebody's rule's. Maybe whomever originally salvaged the robot? Or some city ordinances? Or in a completely different direction, we go after an ex-military criminal and hack into a military DNA database to identify him/her (based on the clearly SUPER accurate NCIS, I have been lead to believe the database exists for the purpose of identifying dead soldiers, so it'd be breaking those rules).
You keep trying to impress _ _ _ _ _ _ _ with your antics.

- Who's up for some questionally legal stuff? One possibility is that Kaoru runs into new kid troubles with a school bully and decides to get after hours revenge. Not sure what exactly. Maybe see if we can get a swat team to raid the kid's house and film it for teh lulz? Hotwire the bully's prized car and get it involved in a high speed chase and then total it?
: Also, forgot to ask, but is there a map of Halcyon City somewhere? Or, I guess, a description of areas? I was thinking I wanted Kaoru to live relatively close to the school to make it easy for her to head home when she skips class (though I think of ways around that that still suit my purposes).
Could there be a school for supers American Dream's dad or parents teach at?
Mom teaching arial and super strength tactics, dad teaching politics/history... maybe some extra pressure on AD by literally being Legacy...

There's not a set map of the city, but Wingblade put together a lovely explanation of the city's geography a while back, so here you go:
For the new people: Here's a little Halcyon City primer.
We've kind of given the City of Heroes a bit of geography as the game has gone on. The first big decision was whether it'd be more like Metropolis or Gotham, and eventually settled on 'Why not both?'
Therefore, there's the bright, shining area that is alternately called the Tower District, Downtown, or Midtown. That's where the Defenders' headquarters are located, as well as Whippoorwill's penthouse and Wingblade's new loft. There's a skyrail public transit system that winds through the Tower District and reaches all the different districts. There's also a much seedier subway system that still draws a lot of crime despite the presence of so many heroes.
Then there's Old Town, the gloomy, gothic-styled section of town that is very much evocative of Gotham. That's where Wingblade's Clock Tower was located, though it's since been knocked down. There's also a lot of graffiti in that area, featuring a metallic-winged angel saving people.
Northside is where Halcyon High School is located. There's also one of the biggest suburban areas there. Monument Park is located in Northside, which has statues of all the heroes of Halcyon's past. Therefore, there's probably a monument to the first Silver Shadow.
Rustside is located somewhere between Northside and Old Town. It's a district full of old warehouses, factories and industry -- much of it run down and decrepit, a perfect spot for superhero fights, since there aren't many innocent bystanders.
Somewhere close by is an old observatory, which surprisingly hasn't been the lair of a villain in over twenty years. Hashtag had used that as his own private hangout recently, but since his departure from Halcyon, it's again abandoned.
The Halcyon Aquarium recently suffered a major tragedy wherein many of its animals perished. It's probably still undergoing renovations
But also - if there's something you want to exist, it probably can!
Regarding Super-Schools: It's an open secret that Halcyon High has some 'special classes,' though none of the current heroes are enrolled in them. It does make a lot of sense that an officially 'out' superhero would be in them. Could be a place for one of American Dream's parents to show up as a regular, or even as a guest lecturer or something.
We haven't established a full on school for only supers, and I'd personally lean against it, if only because it can be simpler if all of our school scenes take place at the same school. That said, it's only a preference, and Halcyon could absolutely have one if it's important to your plans :-)
Also, while everyone's getting to know the new players, I'm also going to take the opportunity to (re)introduce Bran/Bronwyn (with some updates and commentary on my initial answers) - while I think the earlier parts of the campaign are certainly worth the read, our goal is that you won't have to read anything that went down beforehand. If we name drop someone earlier, in theory we've put them in the character bible, but if we goofed - hey that's why the Discussion thread exists :-)
I figured they were nuts, but that only made them more dangerous, not less. I'd managed to sneak away when they first rounded everyone up, but soon they started talking about hurting people, maybe they'd hurt Marco. Bronwyn's then-boyfriend
I hold the national junior women's javelin record, so I figured if I was gonna do something this stupid, I'd do better with a spear. And boy did I. As soon as I picked up the spear, I transformed. I wasn't Bronwyn Pascal, track star; I was this towering warrior, with the name Bran the Blessed floating around in my memories. And I was strong. Really strong.
I hit them like a cannonball - they never stood a chance. One of them tried to hit me with some kind of.. spell? I dunno, maybe it was just some crazy laser, but either way when I hit the beam with my spear, it disappeared, which I guess was pretty lucky. Anyways, they were pretty spooked and ran for it before they could steal much or summon anything. And since I was honestly pretty spooked too, I ran for it until I could figure out how to turn back.
The spear shrank down until it was barely bigger than a toothpick, and I shrank back to my normal size too. But now I was strong. Really Strong.
Maybe I should have just left it there, but I've always believed in what super heroes do. I believe that might doesn't make right, but that might should be in service to right. How could I turn that away?
Why do you keep a secret identity?: Are you kidding me? Everyone would freak?! Especially Marco. I feel like I could explain it if I were trans, if I wanted to be this way, but I'm not! I just, I just don't want to keep having the same conversation over and over.
This answer has changed over time; Bronwyn's current answer would be more like: It gives me a little bit of deniability with the Supers Containment Agency, and... There's at least one super villain out there who knows who I really am, I don't need there to be anyone else who can threaten my family or friends.
Who, outside of the team, knows about your dual identity? No one! Well, my best friend Mary-Beth, I mean I had to tell someone! And look, I've read Le Mort d'Arthur, I've read the Once & Future King, and when I found a magic Celtic spear, I read the Mabinogion too, but Mary-Beth has this stuff. Down. Cold. She's totally gonna be Indiana Jones or something when she grows up. Or maybe some kind of wizard; she's been trying to figure out what parts of the myths are real, 'cause Gae-Dearg did NOT come with an instruction manual.
Bronwyn has unmasked herself to a few people, but still plays this pretty close to her chest. Most of her old team mates know that Bronwyn works with Bran (forging his armor, helping him navigate the modern world etc.) Since then, she has only told Shayera (Wingblade), Eli (formerly Bioshock), and Whippoorwill. Unfortunately, when some of Wingblade's creators got access to her memories, that secret has spread, and she's not sure exactly how far. She knows for certain that Shayera's 'Father' (The Man in the White Coat), and her sister/clone Scythe both know too much.
Who thinks the worst of your masked identity: Man, I don't know. I've only been doing this for a few months. I guess, there was one time when I really trashed this one guy's car, umm, Mr. Brian Murphy's, when I was chasing after some bad guys - spear right through the engine block. Unfortunately he was an alderman or a city councilman, something like that, and I've been getting some bad press since then. Probably why the powers that be suggested I join up. Which is great! I had no idea how to find a team. Mr. Murphy's still not really a fan though.
This one NEVER came up, particularly the struck out bits. Which is fine, it was a bit of a punt to be honest. Since then, Bran the Blessed has gotten pretty good publicity all in all. The main exception is a clash with the Supers Containment Agency, which while not catastrophic, certainly won him no friends.
Why do you care about the team: They're helping me figure all this out! Well a lot of it. The fighting bad guys and the stuff that might be magic. Not the telling Marco why I'm always so busy stuff; that part I barely talk to Mary Beth about.
This answer isn't quite as true as it once was. At this point, Bronwyn has seen a lot of heroes come and go. Mostly they retire, and she gets it. Being a hero is hard, but she still thinks it's important, and if she can help other heroes step forward, then that can help far more people than she ever could alone.

Bran's built like an offensive tackle writ large (over 8 feet tall, and at least a quarter ton) and dressed in a stylized version of the armor of a dark ages knight. His armor started out as basic handknit chainmail with a full face greathelm, but Bronwyn has put a lot of hours into continually improving Bran's panoply over time, and now it's increasingly built around very heavy plate mail.

Bronwyn is a top-flight heptathlete, and she has a balanced but athletic build, a little bit heavier in the arms and shoulders. She has a closet full of fun clothes that she almost never ends up wearing, even though Shayera keeps taking her shopping for more. She's almost always in a pair of shorts or leggings and either a long tank top, or a hoodie over a long tank top.
