Male Human The Beacon | Condition: None

Hey guys, I'm going to drop this one. I'm having a hard time working up motivation to post for this game, and I'd rather not be a liability with it.

It was fun, though. It let me play with a different, more rules-lite system, and I'll probably try similar games in the future.

December 26th Update

Heavy work weekend just ended. Updates most likely tomorrow.

December 26th Update

Finals are over and I'm currently competing at a national leadership conference. Should be back by Monday and resume a better frequency of posting now that schools out.

Apologies for the lack of keeping you all informed. Up until now most free time was trying to fix metaphorically shooting myself in the foot on one final.

Shaun Adams - The Transformed

I am super excited. Will be posting soon.

Shaun Adams - The Transformed

I guess Atoms still has a little bit of deputy in him.

We have 1 point of Team if anyone wants to make my roll a 10.

I will post soon. Hopefully later today.

December 26th Update

Just wanted to check general interest level still.

Things getting too complicated?

Still having fun?

First time working with the apocalypse system, so feedback is welcome. Willing to adjust game to make it more engaging like in the beginning.

I'm having an okay time, not sure what could be done to make it better, but I can think of a whole lot of things that could make it worse, so you're doing fine in that regard.

I have to admit that I'm still trying to engage with the mechanics. You've done a frankly wonderful job covering the intricacies of the system, but it's not gelling for me yet. I am still enjoying the game, and I'm looking forward to continuing.

I'm still here and ready to go!

All I can think of is to just keep throwing threats at us and let us muddle through it like we've been doing.

If I can request one thing, I'd like to have some chats with my mentor. Wingblade has been yearning for some guidance after the roller-coaster of emotions she's had the last few days (in game).

One trick I've seen used to good effect in other pbp games is to use spoilered "Flex time" posts that can keep a side conversation going while the main game progresses. This way, the rest of the players aren't sitting on their hands waiting while one player hogs the GM.

Or, the offer still stands for me to rp Whippoorwill if you're too busy.

Shaun Adams - The Transformed

I'm a GM of Masks myself, and I'm currently running a PbP game of it on another site. You've been doing a great job so far, DM Default :) Masks is meant for 3-5 players, and you've been running it first time with 8 for a while now. Respect, man. That's pretty amazing.

I guess I have some issues. Like I said in my last post when you checked in with us, I've been struggling to have fun playing Deputy Atoms. Not that I want to quit or play anyone else, but it's been difficult. And I don't really want to pinpoint it and say that it's because of X or Y thing, or that Z should change; I want the game to evolve naturally, and I want to play to "see what happens next". I'm excited to see what's in store that you, and the players, are going to bring up in future posts. But... yeah, something to keep in mind, I guess.

If I had to say one thing though, then it'd definitely be this:
I wish you'd use our character's backstory elements. There's so much going unused there, like Whippoorwill, Allegory, Deputy Wakefield (and 'The Farm'), Red Shift, etc.

December 26th Update

Just a heads up, will be on a short family get-away. Should be back Monday to reliably post.

December 26th Update

Thanks for the feed back guys. I'll try and start on that. Guess I went off on my own story instead of letting you all explore yours.

Also, I would very much like Wingblade to take over her mentor. In an actual game, it'd be much easier, but all this typing is taking a toll on how much you guys get to act on.

Go for it. I'll let you know if I'd like to add or do something.

Post incoming tonight, relatively soon.

Shaun Adams - The Transformed

Dysfunctional team is a-go!

The Basic Moves.pdf is kind of oddly worded, but according to the rullleeeeebooook, having Insecure marked gives you -2 to Defend. Which means Hashtag's move is actually a 6 instead of an 8, a miss.

The good news is though, that whenever time passes, the Team Pool resets to 1. So I'll quickly post and have Atoms boost Hashtag's move to 7, a hit. B)

By the way, when you get a hit with Defend, you're supposed to choose an option:
• add a Team to the pool
• take Influence over someone you protect
• clear a condition

I got you, bromes. You'll still be exposed to danger though.

Also, North Star, the move you want is Directly Engage a Threat and not Unleash Your Powers, since the latter is for when you want to 'overcome an obstacle, reshape your environment, or extend your senses' and not for fighting someone.

Probably shouldn't lower your Danger in that case, but it's up to you, broseidon.

Also, I won't mention Wingblade's typo. I got you too, brothena.

Atoms' Official List of Total Bros:
Ghost Dragon - Bropollo
Tectonic - Brotemis
Hashtag - Bromes
North Star - Broseidon
Eldritch - Brophaestus
Imagine - Brophrodite
Wingblade - Brothena

I wasn't sure whether directly engage a threat or unleash your powers was correct. That would make my attack a miss, meaning that I can finally mark potential.

FYI, I had marked enough potential a little while ago, but was hem-hawing around making a decision as to what advancement to take. I've picked this:

Been reading through the files. You've learned about the superhuman world through your mentor's resources. When you first encounter an important superpowered phenomenon (your call), roll + Superior. On a hit, tell the team one important detail you've learned from your studies. The GM will tell you what, if anything, seems different from what you remember. On a 10+, ask the GM a follow-up question; they will answer it honestly. On a miss, the situation is well outside your base of knowledge; the GM will tell you why.

(And of course, I picked it too late to use in this fight. Sheesh.)

December 26th Update

Gotcha gotcha.

Hey guys, when I run another one of these I'm considering an X-men theme of sorts. Kinda modeled after the animated series from way back when where most characters were high schoolers. Possibly a few setting changes.

Would any of you be interested or does it seem like an un-fun idea?

Ji-Wan "Vick" Zeng Conditions: Guilty; Potential 4/5; Delinquent

I would like that. It would provide our group a little more structure to work with.

The system is pretty interesting, but I would not want to play a doomed again. They are a level of angst I was not really prepared for =d

Shaun Adams - The Transformed

I'm waiting to hear more on the Hashtag situation before I post again.

December 26th Update

To inform you all of my current plan for the game, I'm heavily leaning towards ending the game with a final confrontation between you all and Barney and Jill.

You guys have stuck around and I've had a blast learning this system and learning how to GM a storying telling system like this but my lack of preparation and direction, in the beginning, is starting to catch up with me.

Still, I consider this game to have some of the best gameplay moments and interactions I've ever been *sorta* part of.

I do plan on prepping and the eventual recruitment of a more fleshed out game (most likely x-men themed) with a smaller starting pool of characters.

Your thoughts? Feelings?

Shaun Adams - The Transformed

I'm excited! It'll be cool to see it all come to a conclusion :)

:(

I don't like the thought of ending this game. I'll consider making a submission for the X-Men game, but I'm not sure if I'll feel as invested in whatever character I come up with as I have with Wingblade.

I feel that there's still a lot of potential with this story and these characters -- I totally understand that there have been some bumps along the way and the loss of several of the players has been hard. But I still feel there's something worth salvaging in what we've got going so far.

Here's what I'd suggest in the alternative: After the Jill and Barney fight, pull a Young Justice and jump the time forward. Bring in some new faces. Default, let the characters work some stuff out while you work on a new, cohesive storyline with the lessons you've learned going forward so far.

Let the dangling plot threads that you don't want to deal with get resolved off-screen, either by us, the Defenders, or some other super-heroic group. Start with a "reboot" of sorts, but one that doesn't undo all that we've accomplished so far in this game.

I hope you'll consider this, because I'm not ready to let this game just fade away, if there's any way it can be avoided.

December 26th Update

Hmm...I hear your requests and understand them. I like the game going too, but there are also some elements that are essentially integral to this game, that I would have to make some of the players change in order to "fix" some current problems I'm having. As you guys have cemented your identities somewhat, I thought a way to get around this was to layout better guidelines in the beginning of the next game. It wouldn't really be fair to you guys if I asked you to change things about your character's personality, powers, etc when you've played them for so long.

Those are my thoughts at least...

My questions to you all:
Would you like to submit Wingblade to the X-men campaign, or is it the current chemistry you want to preserve?

Between a fresh start and a time jump, which would you prefer (I know Wingblade's postion ;) )?

Is there anything you want to specifically request to make the game more fun for you currently (even if we do end in the next "issue"?)

Ji-Wan "Vick" Zeng Conditions: Guilty; Potential 4/5; Delinquent

Okay. So my post got eaten.

Answers:
I like time skip as a solution, but even 3 years punts us out of high school and into adult life.

I would like a fresh start then. I think I got to learn how the system works and would like to rebuild and play with something new now that I have a good grasp of the system.

Everything else seems fine. Doing pretty good.

Influence:

Hmm, good questions.

There's a couple issues that I have with just 'porting Wingblade over to an X-Men game. I'll admit it makes sense from one perspective -- she's a Weapon-X style amalgamation anyway, so that's no problem getting her to fit. It's the chemistry with the others and interactions she's had so far that has helped her grow. I'd hate to have to roll all that back.

The other thing is the loss of Whippoorwill as her mentor. Whip's not a mutant; never was. I actually created her back when X-Men popularity was at an all-time high and everyone was a mutant -- I purposely avoided that with her. I'm not sure how the mentor relationship will work transporting them all to the world of the X-Men.

Oh, and Hashtag, I was only thinking of a jump forward of no more than a year, and probably less. Six months sounds good. I wouldn't want us to grow up too much!

I'm going to throw my hat into the ring of a fresh start too (sorry Wingblade!).

I have definitely enjoyed playing the game, but I to be completely honest I'm stuck because Tycho is the kind of character that I don't really ever play (cause I like to play characters that are full sure of themselves and their abilities, regardless of the reality of the situation), and I kinda built him to be the angsty teenager that I actually never was (since trying on new people is one of the best things about roleplaying!). Playing a character who is constantly unsure of himself and never wants to use his main power set has been a bit of a strain.

I would definitely want to play in a game again with you guys (since our group dynamic *is* really good), but I would honestly like to change up the character I'm playing.

Shaun Adams - The Transformed

As long as Wingblade is around, I'll have a very compelling reason to continue to play Deputy Atoms. Their story is yet to be resolved.

Deputy Atoms, as I may have mentioned before (and should be obvious too), is based off Captain Atom from DC's New52. In the New52, Captain Atom is a former Air Force captain who gains superpowers after agreeing to take part in an experiment that unfortunately goes awry. At first, his powers seem pretty basic; a glowing blue man whose atoms are constantly reforming, who can fly and shoot lasers from his hands; but with each passing issue, and almost with each turning of the page, he gets more and more powerful, discovering new and frightening abilities that scare both him and the people around him. It's one of my favorite series.

I really wanted to parallel that progression with Deputy Atoms, to make him more and more powerful until everyone around him starts to feel a bit scared, but it turns out that that kind of progression takes a very long time in Masks. Which is fine, I came into this knowing that I wanted to play that long game. To put it all into perspective though, we've been going on for several months, and Atoms is only just now on the cusp of becoming scary to those around him, with his next planned advancement being "Be the monster".

As for the questions:

1. I like the current chemistry, although some of its initial magic has sadly faded away, what with the loss of half the team. I'm not sure if I would join the X-Man game, but I would at least look over it.

2. I would like the time skip. However, as a fellow GM of Masks, it's my opinion that a "fresh start" is absolutely necessary at this point, as most of our relationships and influences are hanging. Not to mention a lot of plots relating to other characters which have now been lost. However, a time skip within the bounds of that fresh start is entirely possible. We start 'fresh', maybe even with new playbooks, but can keep all the background and character development (perhaps sans advancements, though that would depend on how everyone feels).

3. I can't think of anything.

Shaun Adams - The Transformed

Endgame for the former deputy would be him learning how to manipulate subatomic particles other than his own. At that stage he could do all kinds of insanity. Like turn lava into snow, cure cancer, offer to take Wingblade's wings away so she can live a normal life, and make ice cream out of thin air.

He's in DC Comics now, btw.

Funny enough, the New 52 Captain Atom was based off of Watchman's Manhattan, who in turn was based off Captain Atom.
