There was no "free pass", and it's weird that that's our first assumption. When you stated you specifically examined the room, I paid attention. A 39 was simply not good enough. And in case that still has you wondering: This creature had a +32 Disguise.
I had assumed between this one and the room with the weird bas relief golems that they weren't making Disguise checks since most enemies don't rock Disguise scores that high (especially for enemies as weak as the previous ones). Wasn't accusing you of anything, I had just assumed that's how they were written since the AP seems fond of things like that.
Dungeon Kobold
Well, the bas-relief golems were actually making Stealth checks. Come to think of it, the rules seem a bit inconsistent on the subject of which skill to use when camouflaging like that. They had racial bonuses to the skill, of course.
Eben MacTeague
"YAAARRRGGHHH!" Eben yelps as the statue grabs him and rips his life force away. "But I gave you a carving and everything!" He winces as cold smoke arises from his shoulder. "But if you dislike 'abberance' so much...Chocolate fish falling from the sky and becoming swords! The swords rise up and sing!"
Move action to begin Dirge of Doom.
"Rodrigo, flip the dial back..." he says to the patch of air where the aasimar might be, before returning his attention to the statue and describing a game of poker played with rose petals in lieu of cards. His cadence of surreal-speak falters just for a moment as he takes the time to cautiously cast a spell.
Casting mirror image on the defensive as a standard action.
Concentration: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23
To further confuse the situation, Eben splits into multiple versions of himself.
mirror image: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
And then all four Ebens launch into a capering defensive dance, making it a dance of... 92 steps.
And activating Dance of 23 Steps as a free action.
Let's say it's been 2 minutes and 1d10 ⇒ 6 rounds since casting my buffs up in the stasis room.
Moment of greatness lasts 52 rounds, good hope lasts 53 rounds, cat's grace lasts 54 rounds, mirror image lasts 80 rounds.
AC is 27/20/19 while magic circle against law and Dance of 23 Steps are active. Mirror image has 3 images remaining.
Astraden Limhaare
"Kolyarut!" Astraden shouts. She quickly begins relaying all she knows about the creature.
Eben MacTeague
"Gesundheit!"
Carina Viera
Round 1: Actions
No Action: 5' step northeast
Standard Action: Drink extract of false life
Being unable to do anything to help, Carina opts to hop away from the portcullis and chug her extract of false life.
Temp HP: 1d10 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Rodrigo Dantares
Rodrigo steps back from the Kolyarut, and casts a spell from within his cloak of invisibility. He touches Eben, and both of them poof out of space time for an instant before reappearing on the other side of the portcullis with their companions.
Casting DD and moving us as shown on the map.
Meanwhile, the archons readjust themselves and begin firing light beams at the outsider.
Attacks: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 71d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 51d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 101d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 141d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 181d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Damage: 6d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 5, 4, 5, 5) = 24
Farrukh Al'Khatel
Farrukh readies a shield whack for if the Kolyarut comes near.
Bash: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (11) + 18 = 29
Damage?: 1d6 + 19 ⇒ (2) + 19 = 21
Additionally, he tries to see if he knows anything about Kolyarut that Astraden doesn't.
Favored Target Knowledge with Ioun Stone: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
Dungeon Kobold
Rodrigo's archons all prove unable to land a blow on the surprisingly nimble entity—though, in fairness, the portculling makes it rather difficult.
Tanith is up. Also, Farrukh was up earlier. Glad you cottoned on to that. I was just testing you.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed
Tanith rears back with his poleaxe, prepared to whack the thing should it somehow come after the party through the gate.
Readied Whack: 1d20 + 15 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 15 + 1 = 36
Damage: 1d10 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 10 + 1 = 16
Dungeon Kobold
Round 1: Kolyarut
Man, there's a great maneuver here that's totally countered by the invisibility. Bummer, right?
The kolyarut is still for a moment, looking between the archon and the rest of the party. It turns to Bermintrude. "Your presence is irrelevant and mostly illogical. Leave, equine."
It reaches up and lunges for the archon.
Touch: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (13) + 18 = 31 Damage: 6d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 5, 6, 4, 5) = 22
The archon shakes as the violet energy almost instantly drains its light away.
The kolyarut turns and glances at 1d3 ⇒ 2 Astraden. "I SUGGEST you get as far away from me as possible, proceeding north and through whatever doorway presents itself."
Make a Will save, DC 16, or comply.
Round 2: You are up! Bermintrude is taking no immediate actions; I'll leave it to you (or Cow, if he has time to drop in) to decide what she does.
Eben MacTeague
How is Bermintrude even down here? We went over a 40 foot high drop. Or is that where the illogical part of his presence comes in and we're supposed to ignore that? ;-)
"Dancing icicles calculating the value of drow warriors to the third power divided by... Aw, nevermind, this doesn't look like it's really bothering you anyhow." Eben stops his gibberish and instead relies on the old stand by, that is to say, arrows delivered past a Kettitie, a Kordite, and a portcullis.
Manyshot:
shortbow+good hope+prayer+PBS-cover: 1d20 + 14 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 14 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 32
damage+good hope+Arcane Strike+prayer+PBS: 1d8 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 13
damage+good hope+Arcane Strike+prayer+PBS: 1d8 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 10
Iterative shot:
shortbow+good hope+prayer+PBS-cover: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 9 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 24
damage+good hope+Arcane Strike+prayer+PBS: 1d8 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 14
Moment of greatness lasts 51 rounds, good hope lasts 52 rounds, cat's grace lasts 53 rounds, mirror image lasts 79 rounds.
AC is 24/17/18 while magic circle against law and Dance of 23 Steps are active. Mirror image has 3 images remaining.
Astraden Limhaare
Will (good hope, magic circle against law): 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 9 + 2 + 1 = 20
Astraden shakes off the kolyarut's spell. "You . . . you don't think we would have brought protection from law in a Wind Duke tomb?" she scoffs.
Her hand becomes wreathed in what looks like violet flame, but is really millions of tiny artifacts of chaos. "You've been away from home too long," she tells the metal one, raising her fist.
Can we open the portcullis from this side?
Reading dialogue as fast as I'm able, I count 67 rounds since last duration update . . . +1 because of the most recent round . . . for a total of 68 rounds subtracted from Astraden's magic circle spells.
Round 2: Cast dispel law (standard action). Magic circle against evil lasts 645 rounds, magic circle against law lasts 646 rounds, prayer lasts 8 rounds, copycat lasts 6 rounds, and dispel law lasts 9 rounds.
Eben MacTeague
Could the switch be flipped with mage hand?
Farrukh Al'Khatel
I imagine a big stone lever weighs more than 5 lbs.
"What's stopping us from just leaving him here and going through that door?"
Dungeon Kobold
The lever isn't that big, but the force it's attached to is, so yeah, a bit too heavy for mage hand. An unseen servant could pull it off.
Eben MacTeague
"Well, I imagine he can just pull the lever himself—excuse me, are you male? I'd hate to apply our mortal notions of gender to an outer planar being such as yourself if that offends—and follow us. Plus we'd probably need to come back this way sooner or later."
Astraden Limhaare
"Did you hear this thing threatening us, Farrukh?"
Eben MacTeague
"Technically, it only threatened me. And maybe Rodrigo, though it might not have seen him. Guess the rest of you aren't subject to aberrant behavi... hey, wait a minute." He glares at the kolyarut with shock and contempt. 'If you're singling me and 'Rigo out as 'aberrants'... is that some kind of 'goes both ways sexually' judgement? Because that is just rude!"
Dungeon Kobold
2 people marked this as a favorite.
"While it is regrettable that Rigo, elsewhere referred to as Rodrigo, possessed the dimension door conjuration, my tactic was otherwise very sound and motivated solely by standard techniques of war in dividing enemies into smaller, more manageable clusters. I have no interest in your species' evident unwillingness to take advantage of your enhanced fecundity."
Okay guys this is some hardcore stalling. I'll give you until I get home to get something done. You can try to break down the door, circumvent the door, attack through the door or just leave. Or you can continue standing around and hope the kolyarut has a change of harut.
Carina Viera
Round 2: Actions
No Action: 5' step to the side
Standard Action: Shoot a bolt at the portcullis lever to try to switch it to the 'up' position
Carina rolls her eyes as the inevitable starts yammering on and on. She steps to the side and aims her crossbow at the lever for the portcullis.
Tricky shot...
Ranged Attack (PBS, Good Hope): 1d20 + 10 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 10 + 1 + 2 = 32
She fires the bolt...
"Fharlanghn's boots, you're a wordy one."
Dungeon Kobold
"Words are the means by which mortal races communicate, and as such—" The bolt strikes the snowflake-shaped dial, pushing it up. The portcullis clatters up with it. "—hm."
Tanith, Farrukh Rodrigo are up.
Farrukh Al'Khatel
Farrukh blinks.
"Holyyy s+#*. Did you start praying to Norebo too Carina?"
"But anyway before we commence the chopping, is there any particular REASON you want us dead, or...?" Farrukh asks. "Maybe we can work something out."
Delay until after Tanith, or at least a response.
Rodrigo Dantares
Rodrigo harrumphs at Carina's ballsy move. "I guess I can cast more spells..." he mutters. The summoner chants something and a pit opens up under the inevitable.
Create pit as drawn on the map, DC is 19.
The archons fire on the living machine if it doesn't fall into the pit.
Attacks: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 151d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 191d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 41d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 31d6 ⇒ 31d6 ⇒ 51d6 ⇒ 3
Confirm crit: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Crit damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Dungeon Kobold
"Oaths have been sworn to guard the tomb of Icosiol, and the weaponry stored within—" The kolyarut neatly sidesteps Rodrigo's spell, not even slowing down. "—should it be required at a later date by the appropriate owners. Additionally, Sionsiar, a friend of Icosiol's, lies in the direction you are heading. She—" Three light rays strike it in the chest. "—was also an acquaintance of this unit's, and though I do not form sentimental attachments, I have sworn to a contract to keep the treasures of her tomb within this edifice. This is not a contract enforced nonlethally, nor incautiously."
Reflex: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
Farrukh Al'Khatel
"You do realize everyone's dead, right? But whatever." Farrukh sheathes his sword and draws his bow.
I was going to move in and attack but now there's a pit in the way.
Farrukh Al'Khatel
"Guess I'll have to draw my own conclusions then. I'm guessing...they all went to the Plane of Fire, because they wanted to make the world's best barbecue."
"Am I close?"
Dungeon Kobold
"Appropriate owners are currently alive. If they were not, I would not be here."
Tanith is up (as is Farrukh if he wants to use his bow or something).
Farrukh Al'Khatel
"Nice. Must be a lot of trouble to contact one of your kind and sign a bargain with them. Especially one that lasts this long."
Eben MacTeague
"Well, we don't actually want to rob the place. I mean, it might be profitable, but we keep getting accused of doing it when we haven't, yet. We're just looking to get to the bottom of the river so we can fight a ghoul that lives down there and rescue a friend. Is there any way we can do that within the boundaries of your contract?"
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed
Sorry guys, it’s been a busy couple days. There was a mad dash to get the last of my stuff out of the house before the new people moved in and then I had a major interview to prep for and suffer through.
Frustrated by the constructs pointlessly rigid views, Tanith growls in rising anger. ”What if we formed some kind of agreement with you? We’re just trying to pass through so we can smash the undead below. Your ‘contract’ doesn’t say anything about protecting them does it?”
Auto aid Eben if that's what he's going for.
Dungeon Kobold
If you wish to attempt a Diplomacy check, you may—just spend an action point first to enable the attempt.
Eben MacTeague
Well, not sure that's worth it. I mean, come on, ultimately we are planning on looting this place for all it's worth, right? And Astraden's already cast dispel law and is holding the charge- may as well have her touch him and send this guy back home to Nirvana.
Dungeon Kobold
You guys are thinking of Mechanus for the main LN plane. And Elysium/Bytopia/Beastlands for the NG planes. The table's at the bottom.
Dungeon Kobold
I'm going to wait until tomorrow. If nobody's acted by then, I will assume you're waiting for next round.
Eben MacTeague
Bah, you kids and your new-fangled planar names. Mechanus will always be Nirvana to me. Now get off my lawn! :::shakes cane:::
Dungeon Kobold
In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy roleplaying game, Mechanus, also known as The Clockwork Nirvana of Mechanus (or simply Nirvana in AD&D 1st Edition) is a purely lawful aligned plane of existence
Astraden Limhaare
What the heck is Utopia?!
"How will you know the contract's subjects?" Astraden asks, adjusting her stance slightly towards Eben.
Bluff to send secret message to Eben (good hope): 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 12 + 2 = 21
