"Gentlemen, we can resurrect him. We have the magic. We have the capability to bring back the Greenbelt's first rebuilt paladin. Kazimir will be that paladin. Better than he was before. Better... stronger... faster."
That sounded better in my head.
Pretty much what Aest said, though. If you lot are happy with Voltron-ing a mount and familiar together, then that's likely what I'll be going with. It lets Kaz be Kaz, frees up a feat, allows him to be more mobile in medium armour, and doesn't require him changing any of the things we love about him.

"You're a wizard paladin, Kaz."
Oh! Actually, for what it's worth you could take a look at the Nature Shaman's Companion Animal feature they get at 16th level as their True Spirit Ability. It basically does smoosh the concept of a familiar and an animal companion together, so there's at least a little precedent for this sort of thing now.

Okay, so what you're proposing is that Kaz have a very large familiar that is his horse, Surefoot.
I've seen small characters riding around on goat familars, and I've seen melee combat familiars. So what would the game balance be for a large familiar who's a horse?
This does not look horribly unbalanced to me. What would be the special ability that a horse familiar would grant his master? A bonus to ride? A bonus to intimidate?
Hmm

On a more serious note, it really depends on what Kaz liked about the Chosen One.
If it is having a divine advisor that is also his mount, giving the shared skill points and ability to Speak with Master isn't that big a deal. Even giving the free skill ranks in Knowledge: Religion isn't going to affect the balance of the group.
Having a familiar that gets Domain Powers and Lay on Paws is a pretty big deal. So is the True Form that basically gives Improved Familiar for free.
He should pick if it is more an Animal Companion or a Familiar. Then you can start adjusting from there.

I'm okay with it, as I really don't have any problems giving Kaz pretty much anything he wants. I've never been one for perfect balance anyhow, as it's a pipe dream anyhow.
That being said, the Goat familiar re-flavored to a Stag with the Mauler archetype instead of the Emissary archetype along with a saddle that grants a follower of Erastil the Undersized Mount feat would actually be a pretty awesome Mount. With the free Nimble Moves feat that goats get, he'd be able to ride him through any castle or dungeon in the game. Once it gets the Change Shape special feature, you could have it turn into any large animal, including a horse as the Mauler's Battle Form would be medium and going one step larger would be fine. It also could change shape back down to small at will as well, and that would be cool to be able to get through and accompany him wherever.
That's just a crazy idea I had, with a slight re-flavoring and a switch of archetype and a relatively cheap magical item which would not be overpowered or have a major impact on his power level.
Now that I got that balanced idea out of the way, I truly think you should have him go on a quest in the next level or two and just flat out give him a Unicorn to ride that gains paladin levels after he spends a feat on leadership after level 7. Because, dang it, if I've never seen a man who deserved to ride a unicorn more than Kaz.

But wait, there is more...
Hilary and I were chatting about the domain power of the familiar when we realized that taking the Animal, Feather, or Fur domains results in getting an Animal Companion.
As Hilary points out to me you could join the Order of the Mongoose. The furry little tube-rat (alright, that may have been my term for the critter) can then get a horse as an Animal Companion. Yes, you would have to ask your familiar if you could ride its horse.
Not sure who would have to make the Handle Animal checks in this case.

Here are my thoughts. A lot of Cyanne's ideas about, oh, 30 posts up are solid.
Emissary familiar is a familiar archetype. It trades out some stuff for other stuff. What I'm thinking, to balance it and the whole mount/size thing, is losing the familiar's 3rd level ability with the whole domain choice thingie. That and not having a familiar special ability that increases a skill or check should be enough to make it, basically, an animal companion with a bit more, but not too imbalanced.
The other option is to remove that "Share Saves" ability, since Kazimir is going to have like, unbeatable saves eventually anyways, so why make it even more difficult for me to do anything?
Thoughts?

AC vs Familiar--
HP- 3/4 HD vs 1/2 master HP= Advantage AC
Armor Class- 1/2 level round up vs +2 every 3 levels- Slight Advantage AC
Ability Scores- Huge advantage AC
BAB- 3/4 of 3/4 vs Full BAB= Advantage Familiar
Saves- good fort and dex, devotion and evasion vs good fort and will, improved evasion= Advantage Familiar
Skills- 9 skill points by level 10 vs share all skill points, plus early bonus to skill or save= Huge Advantage Familiar
Feats-8 by level 18 vs none = Huge advantage AC
Special abilities- None vs Free improved familiar/SLA's or even smite=Huge Advantage Familiar
Final tally: (slight +1, advantage +2, Huge +3)
AC +2+1+3+3= 9
Fam +2+2+3+3= 10
Okay, this is my semi impartial comparison between the two. Familiar edges out AC slightly if both are mounts. Size would be a slight advantage to the Animal Companion so they kind of both even out. I'd actually have no problem with a full Animal Companion (especially if it's a horse) over a familiar. They seem pretty balanced when you take saves, AC, BAB, and the SLA's that a improved familiar would get you.
I think the real thing that swayed me that AC's weren't as useful as Familiars was that if you don't have it as a class feature, getting an AC is two feats (Nature Soul and Animal Ally) Whereas getting a familiar is three for full access (Iron Will, Familiar Bond and Improved Familiar Bond) and an additional one for Improved Familiar. If you just grant him a regular paladin mount instead of a familiar, it's a solid trade that won't be stronger than what he's giving up.
That being said the Large Familiar is something that can be done via the rules of the Chosen One archetype if you just swap the archetype of the familiar to Mauler instead of Emissary, although they can't do it proper until level 7. Though it's HP would be a fair bit less, it would be far more useful in dungeons and with it's spell like abilities that we wouldn't have access to otherwise. Either way is fine with me.

I might be missing something, but I dont see anything about the familiar getting a domain power.
Re-read it. It is only the 1st level Domain Power -- no Animal Companion after all.
Domain Influence (Sp or Su): At 3rd level, the emissary gains a spark of divine power from the patron that sent it. Choose one appropriate domain that grants a 1st-level domain power usable a number of times per day equal to 3 + the user’s Wisdom modifier. The emissary can use that power once per day. This ability replaces deliver 8 touch spells.
Still pretty nice.
---
I would still like to know what Kaz is looking for out of this.
You have two tables for advancement, Animal Companion (CRB Table 3-8 on pg. 52) or Familiars (CRB pg. 83). They both advance Natural Armor. Only the Animal Companion gets Feats. Familiar would have a better to-hit and saving throws, but generally lower hit points. The familiar gets lots of special powers.
If Kaz is looking for a Mr. Ed that advises him it is pretty easy. Change the skills around, make the Animal Companion sentient (no longer needs Handle Animal) with an Int of 6 or better, and allow it to talk.
I don't see having Surefoot being a spiritual advisor is unbalancing.
If Kaz is looking for a magical beast that can do the Lay on Paws, a domain power, Guidance at will, and eventually an Improved Familiar style advisor we should be looking more at a Familiar than an Animal Companion. Gets a bit more complex there, but probably want to start by looking at what could be done with a Goat. This could potentially be a lot more powerful.

Okay, gonna break my thoughts down into points.
- The chosen one archetype really fits with the whole 'paladin who doesn't know he's a paladin' thing I had going on for Kaz.
- Chosen one loses Knowledge (religion) as a class skill. Not a huge deal, I can still keep his ranks in it to represent the time he spent learning from his grandmother.
- Chosen one loses divine bond. That's a biggie; one of my questions going into this was "Can I have an elk as my divine mount?" Thranduil was absolutely an influence.
- Delayed smite evil - not a biggie; I'd be coming back with two paladin levels so I'd still be able to bring the beatdown when we need it.
- Delayed divine grace - owie. Workable, though.
- Lay on paws - hilarious idea, but if I'm likely to be riding the mount anyway, it doesn't seem entirely necessary, as it'll be either a) carrying its rider around, or b) attacking.
- True form - again, I'd kind of planned on just having a mount rather than a fancy familiar. I know some of them are really cool, but...
- Emissary's smite is awesome, though.
At the end of the day, I guess what I'm looking for is more animal companion than familiar. My plan was for Kaz to 'retire' Surefoot at some point and get a new mount, because he's an old horse and Kaz feels pretty bad about pushing him as far as he has. I definitely like the mentoring and advising aspect of the familiar more than the lay on paws and smiting and what have you, but I'm not sure about the idea of Surefoot suddenly going full Mr. Ed. Not really sure how to get around that, though. The chosen one archetype fits, and it would be great for Kaz to come back with an advisor who could Gibbs-slap him and tell him about all the cool abilities he's been missing out on, but dangit, I want my mount as well.
Daen: In response to your question, definitely elk. But in a full-out fantasy thing, I think your unicorn idea had merit...

I agree that the fluff text fits. I'm not seeing much of the mechanics that fits.
Chosen one loses Knowledge (religion) as a class skill. Not a huge deal, I can still keep his ranks in it to represent the time he spent learning from his grandmother.
The archetype actually causes the character to lose it but then gives it to a creature that can and is expected to follow him around all the time.
Chosen one loses divine bond. That's a biggie; one of my questions going into this was "Can I have an elk as my divine mount?" Thranduil was absolutely an influence.
There is an Elk in the Kingmaker player's guide, but it is only size Medium. You would either need a monsterous version of that or the Undersized Mount feat.
Delayed smite evil - not a biggie; I'd be coming back with two paladin levels so I'd still be able to bring the beatdown when we need it.

Given all the above, have you considered multi-classing as Paladin 2 / Bloodrager 1?
With Bloodrager and the Celestial Bloodline, he can get a Bloodline familiar that can give Fast Healing 1 to an ally. Not quite a lay on hands, but still nice. He could give it the Emmissary or Sage archetype, but needs to understand that the special abilities of the familiar would be based on Bloodrager, which I wouldn't expect him to advance very far in.
This keeps everything the old Kaz had, while allowing you to get a familiar and doesn't hurt your BAB. The Bloodrage itself could be viewed as divine wrath. It also gets you most of the beneficial parts of the archetype you were looking for.

Kaz's journey has made me realize something horrible.
In this world, you can be separated from everyone you loved when you die if you worship a different god then they do. Erastil was the god of Cyanne's childhood. Cyanne has mixed feelings about the god, because her family's congregation rejected her. Yet almost everyone that she loves -- Svetlana, her parents, her siblings, Kaz & Luthor, even her former boyfriend Caramir -- worships Erastil.
Erastil is likely the one deity in which the entire party could unite (I could see Daen liking the hard work and tradition aspect of it, and Lali appreciating the wilds.) Would a passionate Shelynite convert away from Shelyn for the sake of love?

Considering that Blackfeather is a planar ally of Erastil (ISG, pg. 59), I think a Hawk may be more appropriate if Kaz gets a familiar. Blackfeather is a unique avoral able to take the forms of a man, eagle, or eagle-man.
That said, any normal animal with the possible exception of the Sloth should work for Erastil. I think Kaz would look cute with a Turtle sitting on the back of his saddle or a fox taking over one of the saddle bags as it's den.

Yes.
You are converting from Agnostic or Atheist philosophy to a religion. Note I'm using both philosophies as described in Inner Sea World Guide.
There are countless philosophies to choose from on Golarion. Some of them are simple concepts, such as atheism (the “gods” may be real but not divine, and therefore not worthy of blind devotion and worship), pantheism (veneration of all the deities as warranted by the situation at hand), and agnosticism (no mortal can say what is divine and what isn’t—the workings of the divine are fundamentally unknowable by mortals).
Bolding added by me.
By the way, is Luther planning to become more Lawful? Erastil is a lawful good deity.

I dont see lawful in his future. His chaotic alignment is mostly a result of the usually carefree and easy going nature he has. He has no problems with acting lawful, just dont expect him to play along if the laws as they are are unfair.
Id probably peg Luthor as originally subscribing to Pantheism. He acknowledges the deities as being gods, he just doesnt see why one should devote oneself to them instead of finding ones own way. Or, he didnt.

You know, the bloodrager dip sounds like fun. Couple extra skill points, keys off Charisma, I could remove fatigue with lay on hands, fast movement lets me move quickly in medium armour... And as for a celestial bloodline familiar, I think I'd have to do it. Kingmaker isn't big on evil outsiders, so the 1st-level bloodline ability isn't going to be too useful anyway. Besides, smite.
Never saw Kaz as being the angry type, but looking back on his speech to Tartuk, I suppose there's precedent for it. And being able to join the Order of the Mongoose is tempting!
Did... Did Cyanne just do a bit of in-character shipping? Is she going to start matchmaking when Kaz comes back? Because I don't have a problem with that...
Woah, Luthor's converting? That was unexpected! This is gonna be fun :D
I'm glad spirits can travel between realms. We could do an interplanar road trip!
Oh, Daen. *facepalm*
Cyanne's songs continue to be amazing. Never change.

I'm envious. We're at the time of year in Minnesota when you have to carry duct tape and super glue in case random body parts fall off.

Yay! We'd welcome you with open paws!

Yes. Yes.
Because I don't have a problem with that...Because I really want Cyanne to do that...
Fixed it for you!

Total agreement here!
I'm glad spirits can travel between realms. We could do an interplanar road trip!
I'm glad too. No plans to die, mind. But Cyanne does not want to be permanently separated from any of you.
Oh, Daen. *facepalm*
Yes. The boy is starting to really deserve that Gibbs slap.
Cyanne's songs continue to be amazing. Never change.
Wow. Um, blushing here. I'm so glad you guys aren't sick of them. Because I can't stop.
True story: Last week after my Aikido class, Della (one of my teen girl proteges -- I love them!) shows me her new wildlife calendar which had a photo of two blue footed boobies that looked like they were doing high-kicks, chorus line style.
Me: "Della, they're doing their courtship dance. Have you ever heard their mating call?"
Della [suspiciously]: "Mating call?"
Me: "We're Blue Footed Boobies
We have blue feet on our legs
Ooh Baby, ooh Baby!
Let's! Make! Eggs!"
Della [face palm]: "How do you keep DOING that?"

Don't be envious. I'm melting. Anything above about 26 is too hot for me; this is killing me. In an Australian summer, you learn how to steer a car with two fingers, and how to avoid branding yourself with a seatbelt buckle. A local bloke cooked steak on the dashboard of his car yesterday. Medium rare.
Sure, I could join the Order of the Mongoose... Though the turtle idea is cute as well. (Does this mean I could take improved familiar and have Perlivash ride around on my head?)
Thank you for the correction. It's like you know me too well.
Teehee! Blue-footed boobies! Sorry, that still makes me giggle. Are you a real-life musical theatre character? Because that's impressive.

I'm glad you like the idea, Kaz.
Improved familiar requires a higher caster level. I don't know what a Perlivash is, so I can't say how much except that it is a minimum of 3rd level arcane caster. You could multiclass Bloodrager enough to do it. My impression is that Kaz is more a Paladin than a Bloodrager, although there is no reason that couldn't change. It really depends on where you want to go with the character.
If you take more than a single level of Bloodrager, I would suggest taking Boon Companion in order to keep your mount at full power.

Perlivash is the faerie dragon the party met earlier. Kaz made a fool of himself talking to him and the grig, and had a cat-sized dragon using his hair as a nest for a few days and requesting chin scratches. It was cool. But, I'm not willing to multiclass that much, because Kaz is definitely more paladin than bloodrager. Besides, a lawful good character probably can't take a chaotic good familiar.

It's 61F/16C here. It would be perfect except for the part where we have no water. :/

I wasn't kidding about the steak thing. Apparently I'm getting dragged to the beach tomorrow, so if you don't hear from me, assume I've died and am being eaten by seagulls.

Daen's entire character is based off of this guy. Honestly, I love creating flawed characters that are exceptionally good at something. Daen fits the bill quite well.
Lali, my wife saw the horse pic you put up there before and said there's a song. So I thought you might enjoy.

Currently 13F, -11C here. A bit cold, but not dangerously so.
I would be in a pile of blankets that I set on fire for extra warmth. If it gets below 40 I start freezing.
Daen. Your wife is the best and that song is the best.
