Bangkha |
WhtKnt |
No problem downing the potion. Bangkha is stabilized at -3.
Chumtooth |
Bangkha still has his potion of water-breathing unused, correct?
If so, I'm going to pour it down his throat on my turn so that I can set him down in the water and join the fight.
Bangkha will then be able to rest in his comatose state without one of us having to keep his head above water.
WhtKnt |
As we seem to be slowing slightly, and given the time of year, I'm going to put a hiatus on this game until Jan 2. Everyone use the time to level up your characters and I'll be back in Jan. Is that okay with everyone?
Satinder Morne |

Rogue, all the way :D
Satinder Morne |
HP sux :(
We don't use "roll twice and take the highest result?" :)
Satinder Morne |
Want to get confirmation that we don't use the highest of two rolls :D
Satinder is being updated right now.
Satinder Morne |
Okidoki. Satinder is ready!
If i keep rolling like this, next feat is toughness :p
WhtKnt |
Anybody heard from Bangkha? Getting kind of concerned.
WhtKnt |
I'll bot them for this battle, then they will take their leave and I will seek a replacement. It does worry me that Bangkha hasn't responded even to private messages. I hope nothing has happened to him.
WhtKnt |
The jolly boat is currently about 60 feet from the ship. It will take two rounds of hard pulling on the oars to reach the ship.
Satinder Morne |
GOt a feeling Ayaki is going to need a replacement aswell ;)
Satinder Morne |
DM, Have you seen my private message?
Satinder Morne |
Guys, I will be on a cruise from today to the 22nd of February.
Have fun without me, and DM: try to keep my character alive? :p
WhtKnt |
Yes, just been very busy. Will try to post in a few.
Satinder Morne |
Welcome Victoriana! :)
Hope you get into the thick of it rather quickly, would love to roleplay against the little one ;)
Satinder Morne |
"Your" captain, and she still has to fight for the right to call herself that ;)
Victoriana Whitecap |
Thanks! Honestly, roleplaying this character is what turned out to be fun enough that I wanted to bring her into another S&S game.
Satinder Morne |
I already like what you did in the recruitment thread.
Now let's see what you can do.
What is your main shtick? Ranged combat with spellslinger added in?
Victoriana Whitecap |
Sort of! But originally conceived as a spellslinger with ranged combat thrown in. The point of the character was to, in the spirit of "gnomish engineering," build a character who fights using mostly nonconventional tactics like poisons, siege engines, and magic items/constructs.
Aside from this, a bunch of fun support spells will show up in a few levels, like Blessing of Fervor and Protection from Energy.
Some of the build might depend on what item creation Dantes goes for, of course (Victoriana was originally in a party with no item crafters). But I've DMed a lot of at-sea games, and what I've found is that they tend to become extremely humorous shooter games, so with that in mind I built Victoriana around a few basic tactics that other people might enjoy as well:
Shenanigans, of course, to happen only according to the DM's personal interpretation of rules and reasonableness.
Fire spells (now)
-Okay against groups of enemies
-Flaming sphere is hilarious against enemy ships
-Wall of fire (at level 8) completely wrecks any sort of boat (and burning hands does okay too), but must be cast while ON the enemy ship, which is why she's built defensively (and may need to get swimming spells or launched out of a catapult)
Sleeping poison (now)
-Everybody loves this, and it only takes a little bit of alchemy and magic to pull off well
-Ideal for a not-totally-evil pirate
Siege weapons (now)
-Mediocre vs enemies; excellent vs. ships (if you've got a bit of craft: alchemy, explosive ammo becomes a necklace of fireballs with a cheaper crafting cost and 1000-foot range)
-Possible usable to launch grapnels or gnome-a-pult fighters onto enemy ships?
-At level 6, can cast Skeleton Crew to fill the ship up with non-evil skeletons who mindlessly wind up ballistas every round
-With the help of an arcane caster and a few support crew to aim, Reloading Hands (2nd level spell) lets even the largest ballista fire terrifyingly fast
-Eventually, Shrink Item can be used to bring one of these on land in case of emergencies
Animated objects (level 5)
-If nobody tells her otherwise, Victoriana may eventually start turning the sails and ropes on the ship into animated objects (via crafting feats) that tie and tack themselves and climb down the mast to grapple boarding parties
-At level 13 (if we get to the end of the adventure path), it becomes possible to animate an entire ship, which can certainly only end well
Feather tokens (level 7 to craft)
-Can create a catapult anywhere, instantly, for a few hundred gp
-Anchor token can be used to forcibly stop a fleeing or pursuing ship

Forgive me if I am unavailable for a day or so. Lost a family member this morning.
Satinder Morne |
My condolances DM.. Take all the time you want. This can be very painful, and know that we will wait for you and are here in case you need to vent or talk.
"Lots of strength" they say in Flanders.
WhtKnt |
Thank you, all. Many would say that Spike was "just a cat," but to a couple incapable of having children, Spike WAS our child (as are our other fur-children), and his loss is felt as keenly as any human family member. He will be missed.
Ayaki Kitsune |
So looking back and from what I have seen, I have said a lot of things that I have wanted to do.
so let's put everything out there and decide here, I have been flirting with the idea of being Capt. and I know Satinder has as well, Her and I have been verbally abusing each other in game over it.
So I am not sure what everyone fully wants to do with themselves so let's play a game. Where would you rank everyone else? where would you put me?
Ayaki Captian
Alwen first mate,
Chumtooth boatswain,
Bangkha sailing master.
Dantes Quater Master,
Satinder Master Gunner
Victoriana Doctor
Please tell me if I am wrong or what you're idea's are. I am more then willing to listen to everyone's idea
Satinder Morne |
Truth be told Ayaki, I would no put you as Captain.
In-game you have done little to earn the right to be the "leader", whereas I have been trying to put Satinder forward as one since it was long decided who wanted to do what.
Even more silly, I only let her evolve in that direction because of those decisions back then. Given the actual roleplay, I would put Satinder as captain.
On an OOC note: I, Rick, personally couldn't care less :)
That's why I left the option open for the others. I can really see Satinder evolving into a "shadow captain", who is watching you until you make a grave mistake :D
For the other options:
Victoriana is not yet present, so she would need to earn her stripes. No offense darling :)
What do all of you chose? There was a consensus some time ago, but maybe some people changed their minds?
Satinder Morne |
If and when we get a boat of our own, I'd think he'd make a decent first mate.
I don't necessarily want to become "captain", but I don't see Satinder stepping aside easily when the thing would come up.
I see Chumtooth ending up as the new boatswain. He's a comptetant sailor, and he's scary enough to ensure the Captain's orders are followed.

hey i want capt! i mean a topless woman for captain would be awesome, besides! hello bard!
Victoriana Whitecap |
If you guys are picking from the list I think, Victoriana could probably double as Doctor and Carpenter—maybe she's hired for her ability to fill skilled roles, but not trusted enough to give orders or be treated like an officer for a few battles.
I will point out, however, that the Master Gunner should probably have at least one rank in Profession (siege engineer) and Knowledge (engineering), for reasons.
Chumtooth |
Boatswain's pretty much the position I figured Chum to be destined.
Question for the GM:
Will you, for roleplaying purposes, allow Chumtooth to know how to make shrunken heads? It would have no effect with game mechanics, but would be cool.
He would, if allowed, shrink the heads of Plugg and Scourge and offer them first to Alwen and Ayaki, respectively (for landing the death blows), but keep them himself as the ship's "scorecard" if they decline.
Along those lines, Chumtooth also would make a necklace from the teeth of the Whale and the devilfish, as those are his kills.
WhtKnt |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Absolutely! I think that it would make an interesting role-playing addition if Chummy could make trophies. In fact, I'll even grant a +1 to Intimidate checks if your character is displaying one!
WhtKnt |
Regarding captaincy:
I've said previously that I will not make the decision. It should be the choice of the remaining original crew members (Chumtooth, Satinder, Alwen, Ayaki, and Dantes), not the GM.
In my tabletop group, they quickly reached a decision and no one opposed the selection. I have a feeling it will not be that easy here. From an NPC standpoint, they will sway with the majority decision.
If you wish for the "name" NPCs (Rosie, Cog, Conchobar, Sandara, and Kroop) to offer an opinion, they will do so based on a random determination, but only if their opinion is asked.
Victoriana Whitecap |
Err, there actually are magic shrunken heads, which are wondrous items and then can be made (nonmagically) with Craft (sculpture), although I expect Craft (headshrinking) or (trophy-making) or (totems) or something similar could be used if you wanted to be more specialized. (My 5e barbarian crafts everything he kills into wearables and only wears the things he kills, which raises odd looks when the party visits the royal war council as elegantly dressed warriors in silk and mithral and are followed by a scarred man draped in wolf pelts and mummified demon wings, wearing a giant's skull on his head and a cape made of bones)
A level-up might even be a good place to put a single rank into something like Craft (totems), as you finally have the time, with Plugg and Scourge gone, to return to practicing the hobbies of your people.
Also, there are masterwork masks which cost 50 gp and give you +1 to intimidate—which seems like about the right bonus.
