After Jean finally gets on the boat...
** spoiler omitted **
The small-sized wooden creature dressed in a tattered outfit filled with pockets walks up towards the new arrival.
"Jean... <processing> Antonio?" it says. "It has been <polite reasonable guesstimate> a 'long time'. Several of us were just reminiscing about Torch."
It cocks its head, "How are you? How have you been?"
Then after it pauses for a slightly uncomfortable moment, it adds, "<run process: polite request> Please do not jump overboard in an effort to ignore me. If you would rather not speak to me, I understand. But jumping overboard is... <apply caution: careful wording>... inadvisable. You should instead tell me, unlike the triaxian. <speak-time activate: petulant tone> That was very rude, really. All I asked about was the weather. <apply caution: avoiding expletive>" it mutters.
"<process end: normal voice> In any event, you may, also, wish to speak to our fellow students and arcanists: Raju Ilmatar, and Rengovay. It is... <run-time activation: partial or exaggerated truth a pleasure to see you again."
Then, it turns, muttering, "<speak-time activate: petulant tone>Also extremely irritating to have that <apply caution: avoiding expletive> [redacted] artifact shoved inside my [redacted] head. [redacted] Prank my [redacted]. [redacted] hazing. I am not a [redacted] 'robot'! One more reason to come home... though technically, I'd already finished that part.<process end: normal voice>"
I've been trying, so far unsuccessfully, to engage the other Local Ties folk in conversation in-character; one of them promptly dropped from the game (though I'm fairly certain it's for reasons unrelated to avoiding me ;D). Feel free to ignore, if you'd rather. :) Also, I'm not trying to get anything for free with the 'artifact' comment - the idea is that some folk in Absalom put some minor cursed item in his head as a prank as part of his hazing process. It does little except annoy him and interrupt his speech on occasion. It'll probably fall off (i.e. be forgotten) before too long. :)
EDIT: once for clarity and linkage

Is there a drawback thst simulates seasickness? I'd like to intentionally add it even without a bonus trait. E.g. You gain the sickened condition when on a vehicle moving across water.
It doesn't look like it, unfortunately.
You could, because you're sick, get smashed and have the drunk template!
(I... actually find it humorous that if you apply a stereotype of ancient sailors that they get drunk instead of getting sea-sick... they take the same penalties as land-lubbers.)
Also, GM, I'm thinking of adding the Lovesick drawback. Nothing to go with it, just the drawback. Would that be okay?

While this is a fun roleplay tavern and all, unless the DM calls for it, it can be bad at times. Bad in the sense DM messages could get buried and questions get missed, hence the reason I'm not participating. In a game I wouldn't mind, but I saw 33 new posts in 12 hours.
Sowwie... :(

I am pretty sure you are allowed to roleplay seasickness with or without a mechanic if you so desire. :-)

Kevoth |

“The boat leaves in ten minutes!” shouts a burly sailor. “Last run to Torch for the day!”
You want to be on that boat, this is your chance to get a jump on other adventuring crews that are vying for the rewards for solving the mystery of the flame going out. A large amount of gold pieces are on offer to the group who can rekindle the flames atop Black Hill! All day you have been hearing rumors and outrageous claims of the catastrophe in Torch. “The Technique League put out the fire so they could destroy torches economy.” “The flame got so violent that it wiped Torch of the face of Numeria.” Finally, a barge with a cryer arrived in Hajoth Hakados, with genuine news, “The flame has gone out and there is a huge reward for whoever can fix it!”
Unlike several others on the docks, Kevoth doesn't break into a run at the sailor's shout. The massive Kellid continues to walk at the same measured pace, the crowd of would-be adventurers breaking around him like a river around a boulder. One man, too excited or too careless to notice him, runs into one of Kevoth's solid, iron-clad arms and rebounds off like he'd hit a wall. Kevoth continues to walk.
Head and shoulders taller than the average man, Kevoth can easily peer over the crowd of anxious hopefuls to see there is still room on the boat, so there's no need to run. Even if it weren't for his height and breadth, the crossed long hammer and sword on his back are enough to give most people pause before jostling him, and that's before they see his face.
While he is no longer of the tribe, the red elk horns still snake up his throat and cover his face. They make his cheeks and chin look bloodstained even outside of battle and mark him as a blooded member of the tribe to anyone familiar with the Kellid tribal markings.
A few minutes later he is boatside- no need to run- and he pushes through the crowd of armed and armored people gently but firmly until he is face to face with the man pushing people back onto the dock. If they let on everybody who wanted to come there would be no room for the sailors to work the boat, but it is a struggle to keep back that mass of energized and well armed people. He shouts to the man over the din. "Is there a charge to ride?"

No, no. It's clear that you just hate me. Personally.
You're cool as far as I'm concerned. If we want, we could institute the flex time mechanic for early play and social interaction.

Scarlet grins happily in response to Analise's complements about her skills at learning. (^_^)
When Analise presents the item from her pack, Scarlet at first leans forwards and pokes at it experimentally. Gingerly taking the proffered...thing... Scarlet blinks as she begins to turn the item about. Examining it from all sides and angles.
Actually... Scarlet has 'Pollyglot' as her language. I am kind of hoping my attempts at such speaking is working?

Sometimes I'm tempted to just make the giant tavern game, set entirely in a tavern with whoever wants to wander by. Add an occasional unruly patron or stupid criminal gang for some conflict and just see what happens.
oh, and wow! that is an explosion of entries. I was terrified that i was getting a bunch of new applications. I will type more than everyone else to make sure everyone knows its a GM post!
I really enjoy the back and forth, though we might have some slight corrections on a few assumptions once we get going.
I will also work with everyone who is selected that has Local ties to make sure it makes sense when we start, since it is the only trait that really has a role playing effect directly covered in the adventure.
Tac - the drawback is fine and it really is one of my favorites, I used it as a player in Council of Thieves and it was fun. If you want to use it, you should probably pick up an extra trait, or you could just roleplay it that way without the associated penalties.
The condition seasickness in this adventure is probably too specific to gain a bonus trait in this adventure, but I'd love to see a seasick pirate in Skull and Shackles. But we can try and remember to give you the sickened condition whenever we are on boats.

diphycue |

Diphycue - No problems with a novice, but you don't have very long to get an entry in. At this point, I really need to see a good example of a post in character and a real strong character concept. Specific stats and gears are not as important as the story.
I would advise a healer entry, as I am thoroughly represented in the other departments.
How about a cleric who is facinated by the idea that other beings live in the sky and is excited about the opportunity to go and meet the "things" from Numeria and the Silver Mountain. Since the torch in Torch went out he wants to go find out more about the workings behind it and also to help the people of the area with his divine abilities. He is a good, helpful guy, though a bit naive when it comes to new things and people.

My downloaded copy is at home, but I believe the Player's Guide indicates the party is preformed, so Local Ties won't be the only means which the merry band has cohesion. I think meeting on the boat and having initial roleplay is great, but I will probably reserve mine for the discussion thread assuming I am selected. It's always kind of disappointing to have great rapport with someone who then doesn't get selected. :-/

Recruitment is closed! No more new submissions will be considered
Thank you for everyone's applications, as agonizing as it is to exclude people reading all your entries has been fun and informative!
I officially gave myself until Thursday to review and decide, however I have been reviewing and tinkering with group as we've been going. I hope to make a post later this afternoon with the roster. Tomorrow morning at the latest.
Again, thank you all your submissions.

That actually sounds pretty fun! I bet you'd get a solid positive response!
Why didn't I think of that idea?

It's funny. Part of me wants the penalties. I just... I really like it for my little guy.
But.. I don't know what trait to pick!
Hm. Maybe I will go ahead and nab the Student of Philosophy?
Or, GM, is there a way I could take a trait or drawback or something by which I could be affected by things as if I'm a living creature? (Although that is kind of a story-arc I'm interested in exploring: becoming a "real boy" as it were... so maybe not.)
Um... anyone got any ideas? Oh! Hey! Could I nab a second campaign trait? Either Stargazer or Against the Technic League?

Tacticslion |

Oh, wow! Totally didn't see your post, GM.
I thank you in advance for taking all this time to do so. Having recently set up a Serpent's Skull game, oh my, these recruitment threads surely can be overwhelming! :D
Definitely. There are so many cool submissions, it can be hard to decide or even really narrow them down! Thanks, GM! I understand the work!

diphycue - I need more about your character.
specifically - cleric god, race, domains, traits for crunchy stuff.
Then I need a short background paragraph that shows me 2 main things, why you are in Numeria and what motivates your character to want to adventure.
Finally, I need an in character post, similar to what went on over night.
I will be away for the next few hours, so next time I check if there is something there I will give it a chance.

Tac - The Gobsmash One Discussion and Recruitment thread at the beginning gave me the idea, I've been mulling it over for a while. Maybe we should co-GM something like that in the future.
It'll give me a chance to introduce a lot more Drimplegattos, they appear all over my home games when I need a slightly quirky character to help the story out. Look for some in Iron Gods in the near future!

IMPORTANT UPDATE! I have changed Ana to a wordcaster, since almost all GMs forbid wordcasting in face-to-face because it takes to long, but I love the system and it's perfect for PbP! It's also great for a sorcerer, since their magic is more primal than wizards'.
Analise giggles. "It's hardtack! I admit it doesn't look very edible, and it's as hard as a rock, but the stale biscuit is classic trail fare." The young woman takes a chomp out of it and grimaces. "Ohhh, so bland and hard. I miss pizza..."

Allen was born in the Varisian city of Korvosa not long after his mother and father moved there from Andoran. As the son of halfling merchants Allen was fairly well-to-do and had many opportunities to learn and do whatever he wanted. When he was still a child he encountered a dirty, homeless traveler who claimed he had recieved a vision from the Silver Mountain in Numeria. He babbled, mostly gibberish, about visitors from the stars who bring wonders beyond imagining. This chance encounter changed Allen's life. Instead of focusing on the mundane day-to-day world, he set his sights at the sky. He convinced his parents to buy him a telescope and it was during a night of stargazing that a few clerics of Desna found him. The Goddess of the Stars found favor in the young boy and he focused himself in her service. He began to see how the chance encounters in his life were actually Desna's hand guiding luck. As a young adult he is a xenophile, loving to meet new people, see new places, and encounter new creatures. Numeria has long been a place of wonder for him, and he has spent many hours reading and talking to people to find more about it. Once he heard of the Torch going out he knew it was his chance to go there and try to help. He knew that many people would be in need and there would be many chances for him to experience something from another world.
Allen is a cleric of Desna with the Domains Travel and Luck, he has the traits Stargazer, Rich Parents, and Scholar of the Great Beyond with the Naive drawback.

Allex heard the booming voice of a cryer and those around her erupted into sounds of distress and chatter. She would need to leave for Torch now...

I have a Gnome Worcaster Juju Oracle in the Shattered Star campaign I'm DMing here on the boards. He's enjoying it so far, though he ended up paying over 1000gp for a scroll of animate dead and a tiger, plus someone to cast Remove Paralysis.
You can guess what he did with them. He's only level 2, so he doesn't yet have access to the 3rd level Word he really wants. XD

“Last run to Torch for the day!”
A small man with a haversack draped over one shoulder is running toward the boat as it's starting to pull away from the dock. "Oh, no no no no no! Hold on! I'm coming!
He puts on an extra burst of speed reaching to grasp the bejeweld butterfly pendant hanging from his neck, "Desna, a little help?" With that he reaches the edge of the pier and leaps crossing the distance to the boat, grabbing on and hauling himself up. On the deck he leans over, bracing on his knees as he pants trying to catch his breath. "Numeria...here I come!"

Mokshai |

Last run to Torch for the day!"
A heavier dwarf hustles onto the gangplank of the boat. I hate boats, but I need to ride it to get to where my family came from"
is there a ticket needed to ride ?
once aboard, he leans tiredly upon his spear, and removes his haversack then looks forward to watch the trip to torch.
will create a alias if selected.

Can someone give me a quick overview of word castering? I'm looking at ultimate magic, but haven't had the time to really understand whats going on there.
diphycue - nice work, though dumping your strength to 6 puts you solidly into medium load and quickly approaching heavy load territory.
Mechanicless role play, heavens forbid!

Basically, instead of knowing spells, you know effect and target words - target words change the 'spell's targets, like making it a cone or a targeted spell. The effect word is the 'oomfph' of the spell and has it does the healing or the damage, etc.
Basically, instead of having pre-made spells, you can build your own - HOWEVER, the words of power are generally less powerful in most cases, but they're more versatile. Like you can have a ranged healing spell (That heals for only 1d6, but at a short range)
Words of Power are better than normal spells when it comes to summoning, mainly, but regular spells are better at almost everything else. Animating the dead does have the benefit of wordcasting though, as it requires no costly reagents (As one of my players is doing with his juju oracle)
For additional reading, check this thread out.

EDIT: Ninja'd!
And it's more succinct!
Well done. :D
First, linky!
Short version:
1) you can be a word-caster or a normal caster, but not both
2) you create magic effects by blending words together
- 2a) this is flexible, but comes with built-in limitations; the specificity of normal spellcasting is lost
3) they are created by target word/effect word/meta word (if any)
- 3a) the combination of these words produces a particular effect
~ ex pt 1: suppose you take the target (selected) [lvl 0], effect (fade (concealing)) [lvl 1], the meta (boost) [lvl 0], the meta (distant) [lvl 0], and the meta (lengthy) [lvl 0] words; you can arrange them as a first level spell that grants invisibility for 1 rnd to one creature in a short range (selected/fade), a first level spell that grants invisibility for 1 rnd to one target in a medium range (selected [distant]/fade), a first level spell that grants invisibility for 2 rnds to one target in medium range (selected [distant]/fade [lengthy]), or a first level spell that grants invisibility for 1 rnd that doesn't end if the target attacks someone to a target within medium range (selected [distant]/fade [lengthy]).
3b) while that sounds great for flexibility, it's... actually pretty harsh; the above description? literally everything a first level wizard (should they have selected those words) could do; each part of a word of power requires another "spell known" effect - thus, you'd have to acquire each word individually.
3c) IMPORTANT NOTE: you can't apply more than one "meta" word to a given word's effect. That 1 rnd duration for invisibility? That's not getting any better, unless you acquire the additional "spell"/word of lengthy... at which point it caps out at two whole rounds.
There's lots of other things I've not touched upon here, but that's the gist of it.
Does that help?
Honestly, it's a really cool system, and I'd like to use it one day, but, considering I'm working with a new class already, I'm being more cautious about introducing too many different rules in my own character at once.

Tacticslion |

On second though, changing her back. I like writing descriptions for when my characters cast spells, and I just don't want to be shouting out random words.
As you like! I can actually see it being pretty sweet myself, but I've already got a complicated enough set of elements to recall. :)
EDIT: ninja'd by a GM! It fits her story or mine?

Allen Starskipper |

diphycue - nice work, though dumping your strength to 6 puts you solidly into medium load and quickly approaching heavy load territory.
Unfortunately a cleric is a multiple attribute hog... I needed decent Wisdom and Charisma, obviously, Dexterity for AC and ranged, Intelligence because he's a bit of a scholar which leaves Strength and Constitution...can't dump Con because of health reasons, so Strength was all I could drop at all, which really sucks because halflings get a -2. Anyhow, I think it'll work out because he shouldn't be in melee much anyway and he doesn't carry too many things, though I'll check to make sure he's not encumbered.
