Phai Kareen |
Phai called out: "Isen...no! You foul beast! Come face me!", readying her spear and shield to receive the creature while using her upper pair of arms to fire 2 quick shots - an action mirrored by the spiritual bow hovering nearby.
Swift action to invoke guardians challenge.
Spiritual Weapon: 1d20 + 6 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 6 + 5 = 28 Force Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Spiritual Weapon: 1d20 + 1 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 1 + 5 = 10 Force Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Barrage 1: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 +1/+1 if Point Blank range
Barrage 2: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 +1/+1 if Point Blank range
Heroism active(+2 Saves if relevant). Guardians Challenge Active. If saving versus petrification, expend martial focus to succeed.
Vincent Riker |
Swift action for some sweet, sweet smiting action.
"We'll find a way to help Isen, but let's end this. Quickly." Vincent tossed his sword to his shield hand, then raised his metallic arm with fingers outstretched.
Spell Failure (30%): 1d100 ⇒ 60
Four pulses of divine light spiraled out and hit the creature in middair.
Magic Missile (CL 7): 4d4 + 4 + 6 ⇒ (4, 4, 1, 4) + 4 + 6 = 23
As soon as the projectiles had left his hand, the auttaine retrieved his sword and advanced. If the beast landed, he would be ready.
My AC is 4 higher (so 29) against the dracolisk due to smite.
GM Rednal |
Phai's attacks were more successful this time - although arguably not as accurate as Vincent's, which punched straight into its hide. It let out a surprised shriek a moment later, then focused its gaze on Phai.
Fort DC 16 (Phai): 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 6 + 2 = 17
No need for spending Martial Focus!
Seeing no sign of stone appearing, the beast let out another cry - then began to fly upwards in an attempt to get out of range.
Phai Kareen |
Phai quickly rose as well, following after the creature, disregarding her own advice regarding stone statues and high altitude.
Her spiritual weapon attacked, and two more arrows swiftly followed...all failing to make contact with the weaving creature:"Running? Are you...afraid? You should be."
I will hunt you down.
Spiritual Weapon: 1d20 + 6 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 6 + 5 = 13 Force Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Spiritual Weapon: 1d20 + 1 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 5 = 7 Force Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Barrage 2: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 17 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Heroism active(+2 Saves if relevant). Guardians Challenge Active. If saving versus petrification, expend martial focus to succeed.
Also, what awesome rolls. -_- Thanks for the Fortitude Save(also thanks to heroism...you made a difference already, little spell)
Vincent Riker |
Vincent sheathed his falcata and focused on his magic again.
Spell Failure (20%): 1d100 ⇒ 80
Magic Missile: 4d4 + 4 + 6 ⇒ (1, 2, 1, 4) + 4 + 6 = 18
"Phai, remind me to have you teach me to fly some time!" Vincent called out from the ground.
Phai Kareen |
As the creature continued to run, Phai focused all her anger into an arrow aimed to bring it down.
It could fly faster than she did, and soon be out of range. And then return, at other times, to murder other travelers. Something she could hardly allow.
Deadly Shot(Sniper): 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 9 + 2 + 2 = 27 Damage(expending Martial Focus): 1d8 + 3 + 2 + 2d10 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 2 + (1, 1) = 15
Really? Really? Snake eyes? *SMH*
It was doubtful the creature would return, but Phai still rose higher, both to get a better field of fire, and to make perfectly sure she would have sufficient time to react IF the creature decided to turn around.
If it only moved away, it should not be able to get close and use gaze on me. Even with a 180, it loses 10 feet of movement, and I added distance between us - if it rose as well, Phais ascend will be perpendicular.
Vincent Riker |
Vincent chased after the fleeing dracolisk and launched another barrage of missiles.
Assuming I can stay within 170 ft. of it...
Spell Failure (20%): 1d100 ⇒ 12
Unfortunately, the frantic run caused the missiles to spray out wildly and fail to properly seek their target.
Phai Kareen |
Taking a moment to re-focus, Phai shouted down to her ally: "I will check on the creature to make sure it is dead, Vincent. Take care of Isen for a moment, will you?"
Following her explanation, she started flying towards where she suspected the impact, rising higher on the way.
Flight is still up for a good few minutes. I'll take a moment to regain martial focus, then start moving. It only had a round or 2 to try and get away, so I should be able to reach reasonably fast. If I see it, it gets another arrow to the head - before I attempt to assess it's status with heal.
Vincent Riker |
"If it's down, drag it back here. If it's anything like regular basilisks, we need to cover Isen in blood. If there's any left, we can try it on some of the other people." A moment later, Vincent added, "And be careful! It might still be dangerous."
The auttaine trotted back to Isen's resting place and began to check that all the pieces were still in the right spot.
Phai Kareen |
Remembering Vincents suggestion, Phai empties a waterskin - they could always try and create more, and fills it with the blood of the creature, before returning to her companions and starting to smear it over Isen.
If that does not work, she'll search for the creatures horde, in the vain hope of finding something able to help them in this situation. If nothing else, the other statues needed to be stored safely until such time as the curse could be broken on them - they could hardly haul all of them to their destination.
Don't particularily remember that about Dracolisks, but it's worth a try regardless. That said, Stone to Flesh is 6th Spell Level. Even if we had access to Mythics again, we are short a couple levels.
Vincent Riker |
When Phai returned with the flask of blood, Vincent tried channel a bit of magic to boost her strength in case she needed to bring the whole body back, but his spell failed to manifest in his haste.
Spell Failure (15%): 1d100 ⇒ 10
Ant Haul
GM Rednal |
After scavenging around for what felt like quite a long time, you eventually managed to turn up three intact Dracolisk eggs, 1,836 gp, 2,379 sp, 554 cp, 16 amethysts (worth 20 gp each), 20 beryls (worth 50 gp each), 14 diamonds (worth 100 gp each), and 6 sapphires (worth 200 gp each). Mixed among the coins, you also find a +1 breast plate, a masterwork longsword, boots of the enduring march, a bottle of messages, some dust of tracelessness, a feather token (fan), and an obsidian wand of stone call (with 7 charges remaining).
Phai Kareen |
"I think I heared that Dracolisk eggs contain components that undo the petrification...a way of immunization for the young so they are not instantly turned to stone the moment they hatch and annoy their parent the first time. It's worth a try, at least."
Taking one of the eggs, Phai breaks it on Isen and starts to smear the contents all over her companion.
For a moment, she considers to try and hatch one of the eggs, and train such a creature as companion...but it took years to do that proper, and they did not have the time.
Instead, if there's a sign of it working on Isen, she looks for the 2 most-intact statues she can find, and attempts to bring those back into a fleshy existance, as well.
(Obviously after excitedly welcoming back Isen)
Isen Kalla |
As the yolk flowed over the stone form of Isen it slowly reverted back to flesh, cloth and metal as the effect slowly spread across the fallen Elf a piece at a time. Suddenly he lurched upwards, taking a gasping breath as the stone released its hold on his lungs and he discovered a deep and impressive need for air once more.
"That...was...deeply...unpleasant..." the Rogue panted, laying down again. "Did you win?"
Phai Kareen |
Pointing to the pool of blood at Isen's feet, Phai nods: "I certainly hope we did."
Continuing to spread the yolk, Phai begins to check Isen for any signs of lasting damage, checking reaction, pain reception, movement range of limbs and so on - she works hastily, but with experience. Heal: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (2) + 14 = 16
"Welcome back, Isen."
Vincent Riker |
"Well, if we didn't win I'm pretty sure we'd have a serious problem when the thing saw what we are doing with her eggs."
Looking over the other statues, Vincent asked, "I don't suppose either of you have any ability to repair the damage to these guys before rubbing them down with egg? If not, I might be able to carry one at a time, if we find someone later that could help them."
Isen Kalla |
Isen looked at statues. "Perhaps we can store them in the creature's lair, seal it, and return when we have the power to repair and then revive the people here." If they were like him these people were not dead, but frozen in this existence. It was horrifying.
Phai Kareen |
"This worries me. If those statues are as old as they look, then this passage is probably closed for a long time, already. That means the information we were given may be slightly...out of date."
Phai carefully looks them over once more. With 2 Eggs to spare, it was a shame to not at least try...but at the same time, she was unwilling to sentence any of the people to death by attempting the procedure on a damaged statue.
"We should definitely keep them save somewhere, and, if possible, return eventually. That is not proper. Either they should continue their lives, or die properly and move on into the soulstream of this planet. Their current state is highly unnatural."
Vincent Riker |
"Well, they're stone statues, and they've been here this long. I suppose they'll last a while longer. Let's move on I suppose, and we can let people know that the dracolisk has been dealt with. Maybe someone will have access to the needed magic to revive them? We can take the eggs with us, and if someone is going to attempt helping them, we can leave the eggs with them. At least this way more dracolisks don't hatch here after we leave."
Phai Kareen |
Phai approaches the statues, and, with great effort, arranges them in a way that they can look at her.
"If you are frozen in existence, like my friend was, my words may reach you, or not. Know that we will try and return, once we have procured a means to undo the curse that has befallen you. The beast that caused it has been slain, but you need to have yet more patience before your release. My apologies, but we will do our best."
Then, with the help of Vincent and Isen, she arranges the statues in a way that keeps them somewhat safe from weather phenomena but still allows them to see some of the scenery, rather than force them to stare at a wall in darkness by hiding them away. It would be no good to find a way to rescue them, only for their minds to be long gone.
Having found no statue well enough to use an egg on, Phai ponders what to do with them. Knowing well what would likely happen, she attempts to tap into her mystic power to read the weather.
I guess we'll have to wait until we find the Opus, but simply have to try if Make Whole would be accessible to Vincent. Expecting a negative outcome - if it works we'll stay a bit longer.
With a sigh, she turns to her companions:"Well, shall we move on?"
Have not forgotten the eggs stuff, but what are the chances they are ready to hatch just as we arrive here. Plus the one we used on Isen wasn't full of Dracolisk Fetus...was it?
Knowledge Nature - How long until they would hatch?: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19 +Xenobiologist
Isen Kalla |
Theoretically, they shouldn't be able to hatch stuff - if one wasn't fertilized the chances of the others being so are slim. But magic is up in these genetics.
Isen nodded. "We'll do more when we can." He hoped they were unaware and resting peacefully, but there was nothing to be done for them now.
Vincent Riker |
Vincent clearly wasn't pleased that he was unable to do more now, but his more logical side understood the truth of the matter. "Agreed. Let's get going, before its mate comes calling."
GM Rednal |
It's hard to tell when the eggs might hatch - they're pretty rare and not much is known about the lifecycle - but as near as you can tell, it's not likely to be anytime soon.
You travel on, and day turns to night, then back again, several times over. Finally, rather further north than before, you hear four garlanded monks sing and chant in the distance, standing along an adjacent ridge to the riverbed trail as they raise their arms to the rising sun. Each seems small in stature, and their voices almost child-like.
Isen Kalla |
Isen considered the small figures, wondering if they were younger acolytes or simply from a smaller race, but moved to a place they could see and waited for a moment to see if there was any response. His recent experience as a rock certainly gave him patience and practice.
Phai Kareen |
Considering their last experience with monks, Phai keeps a respectful distance, watching the ceremony to see if it was likely to be over reasonably soon. If not, she will look around for some overseer or mentor - not wanting to disturb some religious ritual again only to find there was someone they could have talked with nearby all along.
GM Rednal |
"Put your weapons away, if you would be so kind!" One of the monks called as Isen made himself visible, their voice rather melodic and almost song-like. The other three harmonized with the speaker's words - an unusual, though apparently mundane, way of communicating. "We have not had guests in some time - what brings you to us today?"
Phai Kareen |
Phai stored her weapons safely away:"A desire to learn. We were directed towards the monastery of St. Menande - is that you?"
Retrieving some of her documents, she holds her position:"We came from off-world, and are on a quest to understand the Opus Aeterna, which brought us to Trebelbet and the Monastery of St. Albat before."
She waits to see how the monks would react.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Vincent Riker |
Vincent quickly stowed his shield to comply with the request and added, "That's pretty much it. We just came through the Hellbit Trench on advice from the monks of St. Albat. Ran into a rather nasty dragon creature on the way, but we put up a solid defense," the auttaine flashed Isen a smile, "and made it through with no lasting harm."
