"Although if some of it is edible, we'd happily trade for a few meals. Dried fare palls after a while." Isen smiled and shrugged. It was a sad truth of the road that dried travel food just didn't taste that good.

"That, and maybe a few seeds. Before all those events that led up to us being here, I've been cataloguing flora and fauna of a variety of places. Whatever grows here must be hardy, and I would welcome a chance to try and crossbreed them with 2 or 3 other strains someday in the future."

  • If we need a diplomacy roll, I've got a +13, I just generally don't roll various checks unless asked to or if I'm trying to explicitly use a skill (such as diplomacy to convince someone for aid). That said, I just reread Rednal's last post and he literally said "diplomatic introduction" so I guess I'm pretty blind.

    Diplomacy: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22

As a general rule, if my text notes one of the three social skills at the end by calling their names, you can roll them if you want to. Note that I don't assume you'll always want to interact with NPCs in certain ways - that's why I don't just tell you to roll them. ^^

You seemed to be diplomatic enough to get on his good side, and the farmer nodded as he lifted up one of the tents to show a patch of moss darker than most of the other plants you'd seen here. "Well, you seem like decent folk. You're welcome to spend the night if you like." he said - though his accent was distinctly different from Brennan's, and somewhat familiar besides. "Got plenty of food and water." he grinned slightly. "I grow six different kinds of moss here. Four are edible if cooked right. You can weave hempmoss into rope and clothing when dried and treated. And, if you soak and ferment mossbeard, it makes a potent ale. Growing the stuff just requires shade and a good deal of moisture."

Isen nodded to the stranger. "Thank you, sir. We will be happy to trade for it." Well...moss wasn't entirely what Isen had in mind, but it was still better than dried foods.

    After a while everything was.

"I've never had the joy of drinking moss ale. For this opportunity alone, I'm happy to take you up on your offer!"
You don't exactly get to travel far and catalogue new things without actually being interested in new things - while she fully expected the brew - and the food - to taste awful, Phai was genuinely curious about the moss cuisine.

  • "Oh that's fascinating. I once met a man that grew a strain of moss that inflated when exposed to light. He grew it for single-use crash protection for vehicles and certain heavy armors. You couldn't eat it though, since even if you ate it in the dark you'd have a pretty uncomfortable experience later. I'd be delighted to try the local crops.

"While we're here, is there anything you might need a few extra sets of hands for? We could help you out in return."

"Just having some people to talk to for a bit is good enough. I'm the only one here most days - it does get a bit lonely." It wasn't hard to note a faint tone of sadness in his avian voice. "Come, the ale is this way. With the right setup, the moss grows fast and plenty, so please don't feel the need to hold back out of politeness. I've plenty more." With that, he led you over to his homestead and ushered you inside.

He'll even give you some rations for the road if you want. XD Is there anything else you'd like to do here? Ask for information, plot your next moves...?

Phai casually chats with the Tengu during the evening. He seemed to be glad for company, and she was glad to learn more about the region, about moss farming, and about anything he heared from other travellers.
I figure a rumor or two would be interesting :) Maybe he heared the Baron cannot sleep without his favorite plush toy, or something else along the lines that could be beneficial to know down the line :)

  • Vincent happily sampled the different varieties of moss and asked more questions about the man and the region. Had he been born here, or had he arrived similarly to how Vincent, Phai and Isen had? Were there any interesting local folk tales he was willing to tell? How far had the man traveled? Had he always been a farmer?

It didn't take much to get the tengu to open up - you were already on good terms.

"Baron Yacob rules Trebelbet, and that’s the main stronghold in these parts. The stories say he’s done more traveling than most. Seen more. Done more. Makes him the closest thing to a scholar outside the monasteries, and people look up to him for it—for wisdom and such. He’s kept folks safer because of it, fending off raiders, gnolls, and the like."

As for how he'd shown up... Kesko noted that he too was once an off-worlder, voluntarily venturing through the Red Gate with his family to escape a Coterie misunderstanding on Argosa twenty years ago. Moss farming was all he truly knew these days, especially because this area was so fertile.

"It sounds like the armour delivery will be somewhat fortitous, given that he most likely has any information we might wish for," Isen mused, sipping moss beer. It was certainly unique. He would never forget the taste. "Of course, given the whole toll bridge, I suspect that such information won't be free."

"A scholar, is he? Seems like an agreeable ruler, then, from what you have to tell."
Phai takes another sip from the moss brew, then asks:"So, just out of curiosity, since we passed the toll station earlier...ist there enough traffic on the road to make the toll station worthwhile, or is there possibly another reason the Baron wants Soldiers stationed at natural chokepoints? I mean, obviously it helps contain raiders and the like, but that, the beetle armor, ...it would seem there's enough that needs to be done on this world to keep people occupied doing it - a wise man would only invest so many resources into his standing armed forces if he expects to need them..."

"The monasteries are scattered about - and they do have more knowledge and information than everywhere else. They preserve those kinds of things. St. Albat’s sits in Singwheel Canyon to the west. St. Oolaav is in the Blue Barony to the south. And St. Ioh lies farther north. You might head to Trebelbet and see what they say about them, though. Baron Yacob knows more than most and he’s visited St. Albat’s before." the tengu explained. "If he does charge you, I'm sure it will be fair - he wants income to keep Trebelbet running, but his fees aren't unduly harsh. As for the traffic, well... that's where all off-worlders come from, yes? 'Tis good to keep an eye on the crossing."

"I'm glad he sounds fair," Isen considered. "But yes, I would imagine most people have to come across that bridge, and not all of them will be friendly." Although perhaps Guards who took less joy in shooting people who didn't pay would be a nice move...

  • "That's fair. Judging by where we just came from, it's definitely reasonable to keep a guard. I hope we'll be able to visit some of the monasteries someday, but you're right, going to see the Baron first is a good idea. Plus we still need to make our delivery."

    HP: 37/40 | AC: 20 | Fort: +8, Ref: +8, Will: +8 | Hero Points: 3/3 | 25 feet speed | Perception: +6 Active Effects: none

Phai nodded friendly as the Tengu explained. She had learned less about potential trouble ahead of of them than she would have wished for, but there was only so much a moss farmer would know about the political situation on a grand scale.
Finishing the delivery, maybe consulting the Baron himself, or other scholars for an inquiry - that seemed a straighforward and good course of action.

As you looked outside, you saw the sun heading towards the horizon - night would be upon you soon, and probably before you reached the town. Kesko didn't hesitate to offer you a place in his house - though if you wanted to press onward regardless, he conceded that the road was likely safe enough.

Isen looked over at the others. "We might as well arrive well rested than rush now," the Elf voiced his opinion. He had no great desire to spend the evening hunting for a decent tavern when a hospitable host was willing to give them lodging, and the moss bear was perhaps a touch more potent than was wise to ride on.

  • "That seems wise. It'll give the camels a good chance to rest as well. Thank you, Kesko. Your hospitality is much appreciated."

Later, when the others were drifting off to sleep, Vincent found a nice spot nearby to sit, relax and let his mind drift and reflect on the events that had led him to that point.

    HP: 37/40 | AC: 20 | Fort: +8, Ref: +8, Will: +8 | Hero Points: 3/3 | 25 feet speed | Perception: +6 Active Effects: none

"We shall take up your offer for rest, but I think we should keep up a watch all the same. That outpost was attacked, and raiders move freely - and the beetle armor might make a lucrative target for any. It would not do to accept our hosts hospitality and then cause trouble for him that way.", Phai pondered, ever careful.
Unspoken, she had expected someone was after them. What had happened at the Syaandi camp, the outpost, the puppets they had dealt with much earlier - it might have been somewhat paranoid, but their shipment going missing while they were sleeping peacefully could have been problematic if they wanted some information and cooperation from the Baron.
    Better safe than sorry...

Kesko just nodded, helping to clear some places out for you to sleep in whatever ways you were most comfortable with. The night passed peacefully enough, and in the morning Kesko offered a three-gallon jug of moss beer for anyone who wanted to enjoy along the way.

It's around mid-morning when the stone highway broadens as it rises towards a small city overlooking several forested lakes. A 20-foot-tall wall surrounds the entire settlement with armed watchtowers every 30 feet, and the ubiquitous moss blanketing the countryside grows on its every surface, giving the walls a greenish cast in the setting sun.

As you approached, you noticed a tall, red-haired woman standing above the gate. "Halt where you are, keep your weapons sheathed, and keep your hands up!" she called out.

Brennan winked at you a moment later. "Relax, Sabila! Just some new off-worlders, and these ones are fine!" he called up. It was clear that the guard was a bit unfriendly... but she did recognize Brennan.

You can make a Diplomacy check to improve her attitude - bringing Brennan with you gives you a +5 bonus to your check.

Isen smiled charmingly. His sword was, as usual, in a transdimensional space, after all. He raised his hands in compliance anyway. "Indeed, we're recent arrivals. We got some work transporting some armour made from beetles from the Baron Yacob. Would you be able to tell us where we should deliver it to?"

"Stay where you are." Sabila answered. She came down from the walls a moment later and moved to inspect the armor Isen had mentioned. After verifying its authenticity, she turned to you. "Tell me about Wuli. Looks and mannerisms both." she said.

Hearing that, Brennan added in a none-too-subtle whisper, "We've had bandits steal shipments before - Baron doesn't wanna pay anyone who's not legit. Nothing personal." Sabila glared at him, and he shut up with a wide smile.

"Of course," Isen nodded. "It would be a shame to pay the criminals involved in such affairs. Wuli is a...on my planet we refered to them as Ratfolk, I believe, but he's taller than most. Brown fur, dark eyes. He runs a tavern, of sorts, in a tent with a fire pit in the middle. To make sure we were trustworthy he asked us to complete a small job for them, taking out a creature that was hunting their herds. He seemed quite protective of them, for obvious reasons." Pausing, the Elf added, "Is that sufficient?"

"Well, I did make a sketch of his place, and of him. If you want to see..."
Phai quickly sorts through her paintings, lifting one of them up, showing it to her.

    *Snrk*

Sabila scrutinized the painting for a moment. "Huh. Not bad. Not much call for art around here, though, so don't expect sales." she noted. "All right, you lot may enter at Baron Yacob’s sufferance. Don't expect anyone to treat you like a local unless and until you prove yourselves, though. I'll get the armor put away, and don't worry about being cheated."

She waved you inside - and you got your first look at the place. Directly ahead is what looks like an alehouse, and to the south (your left), you see what looks like a general store. The Baron's place seems to be further inside.

Isen nodded. "Our thanks. May yours Gods grace your duty here, in keeping yours safe," and headed into the town. It was certainly closer to a town than anything else they'd seen on this planet.

Noting the general store, Isen paused. "I'd suggest we see the Baron first, and get the goods safely stowed before we take a peek at the local produce."

Phai takes a look around:"You know, the layout of this place? Kinda looks like a military camp."
Just wanted to note that the layout bears heavy resemblence to fortified roman camps, except for a couple details. Well, maybe I just want to see the similarity, but wanted to note it either way-

It makes sense that it's built like a military camp. There could be all kinds of threats from outside these walls, if the manticore we faced is any indication."

This enormous sandstone mansion (rather obviously the Baron's place) represents the largest building in town. Purple banners displaying a green, two-headed stag flank the double doors leading inside. A pair of liveried guards stand at attention just outside, and they visibly shift into a defensive posture as you approach.

"Halt. What's your business here?" one of them asked.

I am confused. The lady at the door said: "I'll get the armor put away, and don't worry about being cheated." which to me implies we proceeded without the beetle armour/pack animals. Did we refuse that and insisted on marching the beasts into the Baron's audience chamber?

Phai smiles:"Same devotion to the job as Sabila on the outer Gate. Recommendable. Our business is simple. We arrived here with a Shipment for the Baron. As is customary, we wish to present ourselves before the leader of this place. Is this a bad time? We can wait until he holds court again, then line up with the other supplicants.", Phai shrugged. She did wish to meet the Baron, but she was in no particular hurry to do that right after they came into the town. Learning a bit more about the place seemed sensible before meeting it's leader, anyway...[

The lady took the armor away, which is part of her job. XD ...DID you want to refuse to let her do that?

I'm sorry, I missed that bit. Or read it and forgot. I think we'll need to milky retcon things into simply asking to see the Baron?

I wrote with the assumption of the armor not being with us... Maybe simply go with that and take the other posts as take 10 diplomacy assists?

"We wish to speak to the baron, as we're hoping to find information about this land. Who better to speak to that than the baron. As for our credentials, we're from off-world. After a somewhat jarring arrival, we helped out Fort Buckle with a nasty predator, then journeyed here to make a delivery of beetle armor. Our immediate tasks are finished, and we're hoping your baron can help us find our next path."

At the mention of the armor, the guards visibly relaxed a little. "We've been waiting on those. I'll let the Baron know you're here." One of them said.

The other just gestured to a nearby box. "Please leave all weapons there. Don't worry, we'll have eyes on them the whole time - you can pick them up again when you leave." he said.

    Sense Motive DC 0:
It's fairly obvious he's not trying to bluff you in order to take advantage of you later. This appears to be normal procedure here, and you see quite a few scuff marks from regular use inside the box.

Isen looked at the others, and then summoned his sword into reality before laying it in the box. If things went bad he could always use magic...

  • Vincent nodded and took a few minutes unstrapping the various sharp and blunt instruments he relied on to defend himself. Finally, he carefully wrapped the vials of alchemical weapons he always kept handy for when conventional weapons failed to do the job.

    "Think that's everything."

"Could we just drop our bags off here altogether, instead of looking through them? We'll still need to check in with an inn...", Phai asked, either placing her whole luggage next to the box, or removing all weaponry from her person and placing it in there.

The guard considered for a moment, then shrugged. "I'll need to look through it if you do, but I don't see why not." he said, not seeming bothered by some of the lengths Vincent had to go to in order to get everything off. Regardless, once all of that was done, you were brought inside by the other guard.

Sitting in a large workroom was Baron Yacob himself, a friendly-looking middle-aged human who smiled and beckoned you inside. "New off-worlders, eh? Welcome to Trebelbet. Now, I hear you're interested in finding your next path here on Rythes. I've been to most of the livable places here on Rythes, so if there's anywhere you're curious about, I can tell you about them. I also have a matter I could use some help with if you're looking for more work."

Bowing slightly, Isen replied, "Well met, Baron. And yes, we were wondering if you could help. I'm sure you've heard this already from half the new arrivals to this place, but we are interested in bringing the gates back to full function so that leaving is possible. I'm sure you've looked into such yourself. We were wondering if you could fill us in on those findings, especially sites that might be connected to the gates." Isen suspected that any such facility was probably in the dead areas, but it didn't hurt to ask.

"We did manage to take care of the Manticore troubling Wuli and the beetle farmers - I can't help but wonder if the armors we delivered are to be used against more such beasts, or against raiders - and, following that thought, what matter you could need help with?"
It was not exactly that they had a lot of leasure time to do odd jobs, they would do well to hurry and find the Opus Aeterna...but the Baron was supposedly a very powerful man, and securing his support could be very valuable if agents of the Ultari Hegemony were already on Rythes, with a headstart...
