Myrna Riversoar |
3 people marked this as a favorite. |

Myrna is slow to react, but she is all business and readiness as soon as the scorpions appear. In an instant, she is on her feet. An instant later, she's hopped to the ground. The sturdy earth beneath her feet lends her strength, and she inwardly thanks the Green. Drawing the strength up through her feet, she begins to project it outward through and around her new allies.
The earth's protection causes the skin of herself and her allies to thicken and harden like stone, warding them against the pincers and stings of these terrible scorpions.
Then, Myrna starts to grow. As she grows, her horns twist and enlarge until their points face forward. Her skin tinges towards blue. Her muscles bulge and ripple. As she grows she starts to sing, her voice resonant, powerful, and carrying with it a unique magic. Listeners are filled both with a furor for battle and an ancestral memory of Sarkorian fighting techniques.
"Forth i'r frwydr!
Ymlaen yr ymladd,
Swift fel yr eryr yn ei hediad!
Na fydded i oleuad yr haul o amgylch ein llwybr gau,
Hyd nes i ni ddod o hyd i'n gelynion cythraul."
Onward the fight,
Swift as the eagle in his flight!
Let not the sunlight o'er our pathway close,
Till we o'erthrow our demon foes."
Free Act: 5' step.
Free Act: Berserking (-2 AC, 10 temporary hit points)
Swift Act: Shapeshift (enlarge person, rock throwing, powerful legs)
Move Act: Begin Inspired Rage (+2 to hit melee, +2 damage thrown and melee, +3 morale to fear saves, 20 temporary hit points, -1 AC, no patience or concentration. Myrna also gains 4 fast healing)
Inspired Rage also grants three bonus feats. This allows those affected by her song to use primal fury maneuvers, with an IL equal to half your level + your best mental stat. Myrna's current readied maneuvers are panthera on the hunt, momentum crash, and bloody riposte. Her current stance is primal warrior stance.
Standard Act: 1 MP: Earth Protection (DR 10/adamantine to all allies within 30 feet)

Hinagiku |

Hinagiku ignores the feeling of having struck a giant rock and carefully aims her next punch between two chitinous plates.
AoO(precogn.,luck): 1d20 + 15 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 15 + 3 + 1 = 27

GM Kiora |

The crusader remaining on the carriage squints at the giant scorpions outside of his carriage and groans. Releasing his temples, he stands up and simply spends some time watching the monster and its movements. He draws his bow from his back. As he does, the other two scorpions open their maws and fire out three identical blasts of flame from each maw. One turns and attempts to incinerate Myrna, Beatrix and Hinagiku, while the other aims directly at Sana and the crusader man who stands behind of her. The crusader behind Sana fails to get out of the way in turn and screams as he is nearly roasted alive. But once the flames vanish, he is still standing.
Crusader reflex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Book keeping: Hinagiku's counterattack misses. Everyone except Sana & Driver #3 have earth protection up. Driver #3 takes 54 damage and is in critical condition.
If Unafe fails her save to poison, she takes a –2 penalty on Reflex saves and all Dexterity-based attack rolls, ability checks, and skill checks, as well as to AC. She also suffers a –2 penalty on Strength-based attack rolls, damage rolls, skill checks, and ability checks. Her carrying capacity is divided by 3. She is always considered to be carrying at least a medium load (which adds an armor check penalty of -3 and limits her max dex to +3).
Hinagiku, Myrna, Beatrix, and Sana must make a DC 23 Reflex save or take 12d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 6, 1, 3, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 3, 5) = 44 damage (for Hinagiku/Myrna/Beatrix) or 12d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 6, 1, 5, 6, 2, 5, 6, 6, 3, 4) = 54 damage (for Sana). Successful save halves. Let me know if you have an ability to ignore the half damage on a save.
Ehren and Lann are up!
Round 2!
Hinagiku, Li'an, Anna and Unafe are up!

Myrna Riversoar |

Reflex Save (serendipity): 1d20 + 6 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 6 + 3 + 1 = 28
In an instant, Myrna whips her shield from her back and interposes it between herself and the blaze of fire. Her technique is flawless, sending the flames spiraling out and away from her body, leaving her completely unharmed. Her shield-stance protects Beatrix as well, though not Daisy, in front of her.
Myrna spends an immediate action and her martial focus to Blockade, granting herself and everyone in a 20ft. cone behind her evasion and a +3 bonus to Reflex.

Lieutenant Medici |

Reflex Save (blockade, serendipity): 1d20 + 4 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 4 + 3 + 1 = 20
Although Myrna does her best to protect Beatrix, the other tiefling is too slow to avoid the blast of fire. She cries out in pain as her flesh is badly seared, despite the resistance conferred by her tiefling blood.

Ehren Ferron |

“Thanks, Li’an,” Ehren says, having been pulled out of his precarious position by the elf’s timely spell. He looks to Myrna and Kellvar, concerned for their well-being since Li’an had to leave them behind, only to behold the Riversoar scion sprout into a giant. Roused by her sonorous voice, the druid’s heart begins to beat faster; taking a deep breath, however, he manages to quell the frenzy that threatens to overtake him. He has a feeling that he wouldn’t be able to properly concentrate, under those conditions. Maybe he would feel otherwise, if he were in the right form. There's more to her than meets the eye...
Ehren frowns as the scorpions begin to spew flame, causing far more devastation than he might have otherwise expected. What’s more, something was going on near the rearmost wagon… but he would have to deal with what was right in front of him, first. Already crackling with white lightning, he raises a finger and points its tip at the injured scorpion. A geyser of ley energy fires out of his fingertip with a tremendous crack, lancing across the battlefield in a brilliant streak.
"Let's take this one out and help Hinagiku with the next!" he calls out, invigorated by Unafe's war honk. Between that and the raging song, a part of him really wished he could smash something right now. The Kellid part, probably.
Ehren casts ley energy bolt. Scorpion #1 must pass a DC 19 Reflex save to halve the damage.
Ley Energy Damage: 10d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 4, 2, 1, 3, 6, 4, 4, 5) = 39
Edit: Ehren uses a move action to restore Unafe's martial focus!

Lann of Neathholm |

Lann, on the other hand, finds himself getting a little high off the atmosphere. In an instant, their somewhat leisurely wagon ride through the Worldwound had been interrupted by the giant scorpions, larger even than some of the biggest arachnids he’s seen in the Darklands. Having fought in the Crusades for years now, the underfolk is usually rather calm in situations like these, but for some reason, this time he finds that his heart is pounding in his chest. Every fighting muscle in his body seems to swell, ready to be pushed to their limits. By the time he realizes that Myrna’s words had something to do with it, he is already throwing himself into action.
The crusader does not even wait for Ehren to finish talking before breaking off into a sudden run, sword not even in hand yet. Rushing right for the most injured of the giant scorpions, Lann pulls his sword out of its sheath and clutches it in a two-handed grip, having neglected to don his shield beforehand. With an uncharacteristically blood curdling yell, he closes the distance and swings his cold iron blade at the monster as hard as he can.
Lann boosts as a swift action using momentum crash. He then charges Scorpion #1 by initiating panthera on the hunt, drawing his sword along the way.
Charging Two-Handed Longsword Attack! (Charge, Panthera, Power Attack, Rage): 1d20 + 15 + 2 + 2 - 3 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 15 + 2 + 2 - 3 + 2 = 32
Damage (Panthera, Power Attack, Rage, War Honk!, Momentum Crash): 1d8 + 8 + 2 + 9 + 2 + 6 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 8 + 2 + 9 + 2 + 6 + 10 = 40

Li'an Va'ardalia |

Watching in shock as gouts of flame erupt from two of the gargantuan scorpions, Li'an jumps up into the air, flying upwards. Primarily to separate herself from the others, but also to allow everyone a clear line of sight to her so she could use her magic upon them.
"Everyone," Li'an shouts to those around the caravan as she floats far above the ground. "Focus your thoughts on me for a moment so my magic can reach you! If you do I can reach you where you are and ward you against their fire!"
Having gotten everyone's attention, Li'an unleashes her abjuration--her magic able to leap the space between her and her allies as effortlessly as if she had been touching them--ensuring that the next time the scorpions breathed fire that they'd be protected.
In the meantime, Auraelia, having seen one of the caravan drivers horribly maimed by the fire bolts off in that direction. "I will be back!" she says as she kicks off of Li'an's shoulder to gain momentum.
Knowing better than to try to argue with her Lyrakien companion, Li'an simply calls to her "Be careful!"
Mv Act: fly upwards 30 ft.; Std Act: Communal Resist Energy on everyone who hears her and accepts that she can ward them (10 people total including herself, but not Auraelia). Those affected gain resist fire 20 for 10 minutes.
Auraelia
Full Round Act: Double Move (110 ft.) to close with the injured caravan driver near Anna, avoiding the scorpion out there and ensuring she's beyond a 5' step away from it at the end of her movement.

GM Kiora |

The scorpion is surprisingly nimble - it is only grazed by Ehren's blast, but it serves well to distract him from Lann's sudden charge. He manages to wedge his blade between two plates of its carapace, deep into its side, before withdrawing.
Demonic Scorpion Reflex: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (14) + 6 - 1 = 19
Book keeping: Ehren deals 19 damage to Scorpion #1, Lann deals 40 damage to Scorpion #1. It is wounded.
Hinagiku, Anna, and Unafe are up!

Unafe Two-Hearted |

Fort+poison: 1d20 + 14 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 14 + 4 = 29
Unafe winces as the scorpion rips into her flesh and stings her, but the Demetae warrior is able to shake off the venom.
She feels emboldened by the Archdruid's encouragement, and begins to laugh with joy as Myrna's mighty Kellid war song fills her with power.
Knowing she really doesn't want to get hit by this thing again, she puts everything she has into smashing it to pulp.

Hinagiku |

Eyes closed, Hinagiku does not see Myrna grow to giant proportions as much as she feels the very ley yields to her growing size. The presence becomes almost palpable as the captain begins to recite her poem. The words, the tones, the rhythm, they were tantalizing, intoxicating. Hinagiku senses their allure, but as she is about to let them guide her, she notices the waves forming in her inner ocean, greater and greater, too dangerous to let go out of hand. And with that, she breathes out and focuses on being one with her surroundings.
In between blows against the beast, Hinagiku continues to gather the threads of ley around her, slowly building a gargantuan sphere of ley around her that only Ehren can see.

Anna Chronos |

"You're very welcome!" comes a sing-song voice from Sana's gauntlet, a sound almost like wind chimes given the capacity to utilize fricatives, considerably louder than Sana's "Don't worry about it." By the time she's done talking, her starknife has disappeared into her quiver and a shortbow has come out. The shortbow bears images of multi-headed dragons burned into the golden wood, with elven runes near where the strings are tied.
'Okay, so... three corrupted giant scorpions, one tainted jotun, and an average size dinosaur... centaur? Yeah, we're going to need to..' Anna is in the middle of thinking as suddenly a gout of flames is loosed in her direction... and the other foe amongst the wagons. She instinctively holds her gauntleted hand between herself and the blast, turning sideways as she does and bracing her right foot against the ground.
'And... of course they breathe fire. Better than some of the other things they might be able to do. And I can't really blame them for not wanting to eat me raw, I certainly wou - Oh.' so, the Jotun was on the good guy side. 'Double oh!' Sana says, suddenly grinning as she grows excited, before tamping it down, knowing that she needed to focus. 'That's gotta be Captain Riversoar and... her dinosaur friend? Still need to evac, but it might not be a lost cause, now. Oh, and there's something familiar about that redhead...'
"Okay." Sana says over her shoulder as Amber flies from one wagon to the next, fluttering past to alight just past the nose of the horse nearest team Giant Women. "I'm going to need you to stay calm. Do not stand directly behind me. Call to your friend by name in the second cart, it should help center them." she continues, as she turns her body back towards the tainted vermin, gauntleted hand making a calming motion. "Tell them to do what you did. After that, get some distance from myself and the scorpion, get your friend to spread out along with you, but not too far from each other, the light only reaches a little ways. I'll try to keep it distracted. If I need to flee, I'll leave my light with the two of you so you can jump to me again. Hopefully in a safer spot this time. Things are about to get spooky."
"Don't be afraid!" chimes in the gauntlet cheerfully.
Anna's shadow begins to flicker along her features in ways the sunlight clearly didn't portend, it's a little difficult to see with the way her makeup (and bits of glitter) is utilized, but it's clear as day now. She draws a single arrow from her quiver as she raises her bow, nocks it, and launches a single arrow towards its face. The left face. Stage left.
Cimba (Haste): 1d20 + 18 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 18 + 1 = 29
Cimba Cold Iron Damage (Deadly, Fatal): 1d6 + 3 + 2d10 + 3d6 ⇒ (3) + 3 + (2, 2) + (2, 1, 2) = 15 Mean dice! Fatal Thrust is precision damage.

SR: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (14) + 17 = 31
SR 2: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (3) + 17 = 20
Anna uses Lightning Change to swap to her shortbow as a free action that can be taken outside of her turn. She succeeds on her reflex save (taking 27-10=17 damage) and banters (suggesting the Crusader help his friend, and then for them to spread out and not be behind her). She accepts Li'an as her (anti)fiery savior. Amber flies to near Hinagiku and Myrna. Any ally inside Amber's Aura may spend a swift action to move 5 feet without provoking, or a move action to teleport to Anna. Anna spends 1 mp to activate MSM: Fencing (1/rd, fatal thrust (sneak attack, effectively) regardless of requirements for tier (4) rounds), activating her Witchmarked drawback (her shadow is animate). She performs a deadly shot with Cimba, applying Hindering Projectiles on hit (-2 attack, ac, CMD, may be removed as a move action (or all hindering projectiles may be removed as a full round action, the penalties stack)) and expends her first martial focus to add 2d10 damage to the deadly shot. If the attack hits, the faerie fire lasts for another 7 minutes (14 total). She spends a swift action to 'scout' the scorpion, success v. DC 10+CR = Knowledge of weaknesses, BAB, and any spheres it has access to. She spends a move action to actively listen for any additional threats.

GM Kiora |

Hinagiku shakes off the rage overtaking her, but finds that her resulting blows too weak to affect the gargantuan scorpion before her much.
At the back of the wagon train, Sana's shot only bounces off of one of the scorpion's two foot long fangs. The Crusader behind of her nods, and moves away from her, attempting to get some distance. He screams out, "Velwyn, do what she says, come on, get out of there!"
The woman driving the middle wagon train, a hobbit woman with a long braid down her back, reaches out for the little mote and then steps out of Sana's shadow.
At the front of the wagon train, Maeri slowly backs up until her back is against a cliff. She then slowly starts to inch to the left, eyes wide as Unafe pummels the scorpion to death, her immense fists smashing through its carapace with an audible crunching sound.
The Crusader on the wagon turns and backs away from the other scorpion. He studies it for awhile as it strikes again and again at Hinagiku, then at the perfect moment, manages to shoot it in the eye.
The scorpion has +11 BAB, no weaknesses, no spheres abilities.

Myrna Riversoar |

Myrna's voice rises to a roar, and she begins to add percussion by slamming her axe into her shield. She makes eye contact with the terrible scorpion in front of her, and dares it to strike at her by leaving her torso exposed, both arms extended outward. Quickly she changes stances, pushing herself quickly closer to the creature, approaching it around the monk who stood before her. With a flash of steel, her axe swings in an arc towards the scorpion's chitinous carapace.

Lieutenant Medici |

Tamping out her singed robes, Beatrix calmly takes in Li'an's brief explanation of her abilities, and as she contemplates that the girl could use magic on her if she was thinking about her, Beatrix feels the effects of the abjuration.
She resolves to try to ask about those strange abilities later. For now, there was a gigantic demonic scorpion, and Myrna was picking a one-on-two fight with it. Hoping to even the odds against her friend, Beatrix evokes a burst of holy magic that could possibly blind the insect, rendering its attacks much weaker.

MA: Move away from those scorpions.
SA: Cast burst of radiance, targeting Scorpion #2. It must make a DC 17 Reflex save to avoid blindness.

GM Kiora |

Myrna's heavy swing falls a few inches too short of the immense beast, but Beatrix easily catches the monstrous vermin within her brilliant spell, blinding all three of its ugly faces. The creature snarls, still able to sense the world around it through the earth, but not with as much precision as before. Its tail hits Myrna straight on the chest, but it is surprised to find her flesh is as hard as stone... it barely nicks her, but it is enough for its venom to make contact with her flesh.
At the same time, towards the back of the caravan, the other scorpion charges away from the other heroes, towards Sana who stands defending the two other Crusader drivers. Though the scorpion's first strike - a sudden jerking movement of its tail - manages to catch her unawares, leaving a long, thin, cut down her breastbone, she easily dodges each swipe of its clacking crab-like claws.

Myrna and Anna must make a DC 23 fort save or become poisoned.
Ehren and Lann are up!
Round 3!
Hinagiku, Li'an, Anna, Auraelia, Unafe, Myrna, and Beatrix are up!

Ehren Ferron |

With one scorpion down and the next closest one being engaged by Hinagiku and Myrna, Ehren looks to the most distant of the original three. Evidently, someone managed to earn its ire; someone who was not originally with the caravan. Regardless, he was not about to let one of Deskari's vermin just do what it wants. The Worldwound's corruption had given the otherwise mindless creature the ability to think. For all the cunning it has gained, that is something that can be used against it.
Reaching out with his magic, Ehren touches the giant scorpion's simple mind. He impresses upon it the knowledge of what it once was, an ordinary vermin, incapable of rational thought. The thoughts begin to wear down on the scorpion, as though they carried physical weight.
Ehren casts burdened thoughts on Scorpion #3. If it fails a DC 18 Will save, it gains heavy encumbrance and becomes staggered (since it is 3 size categories larger than Ehren) for 10 rounds.

Lann of Neathholm |

Lann huffs as the scorpion before him is felled by Unafe, giving him a brief moment to catch his breath. But with his heart still pounding in his ears, he cannot quite collect his thoughts. As Myrna's song continues, the crusader subtly shifts his stance without quite realizing it, standing tall and keeping his body held wide. He looks to the next scorpion and with a snarl, takes off running again.
Lann swings his blade with both hands once more, but the blow is a wild once, somehow lacking some of the ferocity of his last one. The tip of his sword skitters across the massive vermin's chitinous armor; a look of annoyance flashes across his face.
Lann assumes primal warrior stance as a swift action, and then moves to attack Scorpion #2 (but misses).
Longsword Attack (Inspired Rage, Power Attack): 1d20 + 15 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (3) + 15 + 2 - 3 = 17

Unafe Two-Hearted |

Unafe pulls her fist out of the demonic vermin's shell and shakes the ichor off with a smile.
"Un i lawr, dau i fynd, fy nghymrodyr!"
Hallit: "One down, two to go, my comrades!"
When she sees the non-blinded behemoth scuttle toward the mysterious stranger, and the crusaders huddled behind her, Unafe takes three quick steps and then leaps into the air. She soars over the blind agitated scorpion and two wagons, and lands with a thud behind the massive monster, swinging.
Round 3

Myrna Riversoar |

Myrna actually has 20 extra THP from raging song, so she shouldn't take any damage to her HP. She also has shield other, so it should be 6 damage to Myrna's THP and 5 damage to Beatrix.
It takes too much of Myrna's concentration to fight off the poison, and as a result she isn't able to put up an effective offense against the scorpion. Still, she roars and sings and swings her axe to and fro, continuing to draw the creature's attention to herself as she clashes her blade against its carapace.

Lieutenant Medici |

Beatrix feels a burning sensation in her chest as her spell protecting Myrna transfers some wounds from her Kellid Captain to her. A sore develops where the stinger got into Myrna's chest. She grimaces, but continues by casting a spell. She once again prays to Iomedae -- not for power, or holy smiting, but for just an extra ounce of luck in this fight. She summons a pall over the battlefield that helps herself (and her nearby allies) and hinders the scorpion that they fought together.
Beatrix casts prayer. Kellvar, Lann, Hinagiku, Li'an, Ehren, Myrna, and Beatrix get a +1 luck bonus to attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saves, and skill checks. Scorpion #2 gets a -1 penalty to those things.

Ehren Ferron |

Addendum to my previous post, using my unused move action.
"Tynnwch hi allan, Unafe!" Ehren calls out to Unafe as she sails overhead, crossing the distance between her and the rearmost scorpion.
Move action to restore Unafe's martial focus!

Li'an Va'ardalia |

Li'an watches as the scorpion at the head of the caravan goes down under Unafe's barrage, then turns her attention to the remaining two. Of them, only the farthest was threatening the drivers, along with whomever it was that had shown up over there to rescue them. When Unafe takes off towards it to help bring it down, Li'an decides to help it meet its end as quickly as possible.
Li'an holds a hand up into the air and focuses, drawing upon a combination of her Brijidine magic and the divine energy flowing through her to unleash a brilliant white pillar of fire from the sky above the scorpion.
Std Act: flame strike, DC 23 Reflex save to halve damage
flame strike: 10d6 + 10 ⇒ (2, 2, 1, 6, 1, 4, 6, 3, 6, 1) + 10 = 42 Would normally do 50% divine and 50% fire, but the scorpion is immune to fire, which for Li'an reduces the fire damage by half. However, in response the divine portion is also increased by half, effectively negating the immunity outright (75% divine, 25% fire damage)
Meanwhile, Auraelia closes with the wounded driver, stopping at eye level with them. "Hold still for a moment, I will aid your wounds." She reaches out and touches him, using the little bit of innate healing magic she could manage to try and ensure he survives. "The two of you should take cover on the creek bank. Stay low to the ground and you will be alright," she says, pointing behind her towards the short slope of the creek.
Mv Act: Close with Caravan Driver #3; Std Act: cast cure light wounds

"Thank you!" the heavily armored Lyrakien calls to the group's mysterious new ally. "I will protect these two if you can help Li'an and the others bring down that oversized roach!" she says before expressing her distaste towards the giant bug, "Bleh! Die quickly, you nasty thing!"

Anna Chronos |

Anna yelps in pain as the creature's tail makes contact with her and her brow furrows in pain as she feels the tell-tale burn of her body actively destroying a poison. She slaps the stinger away as it makes contact - in the direction it was already going, turning most of the blow into a painful bruise - as she pulls away from the continuing assault and the shadows continue to roil along her body. Her bow vanishes back into her bag and her starknife comes back out. She quickly lunges forward with the blade, hoping to tear into the space between plates. Her shadow darts across the lustrous surface of her starknife as it makes contact, and her heart starts to beat faster as she lets the distant skald's song focus her assault. With the crusaders behind her and the enemy pressuring her into acting defensively, she couldn't flee just now. She lashes out again, and again, jamming different portions of the starknife into the joints between scorpion chitin as she begins to pant. Sana, too focused on the enemy before her, doesn't respond to the little lyrakien, but her gauntlet does.
"Don't worry!" Opal says cheerfully, "Just get them to safety, we've got this!"
Across the battlefield, Amber simply floats through Myrna and comes to a rest amidst team Giant Woman, just as one of them simply leaps across the battlefield to land opposite her with the scorpion. Clearly dinosaur woman had some nice legs.
Anna is immune to poison! Anna uses Painful Reckoning (1MP) as an immediate on the scorpion's attack, turning 20/25 damage to nonlethal. She gains a +2 luck bonus to attack and ac and +4 luck bonus to damage v. Scorpion 3 for 10 rounds. Anna has taken 22 lethal and 20 nonlethal. She switches weapons as a free action, accepts inspired rage, and makes a full attack. Amber moves and retains the same benefit for Amber as before - teleport to Sana as a move, 5 foot move without aoos as a swift.

Hinagiku |

Infatigable, Hinagiku continues her barrage of blows against the giant vermin. In the midst of her strikes, she senses the strange light that approaches them. Peaking for a moment she catches a glimpse of amber. She searches the faces of her nearby allies for any worry or trust they might have for the light, but all she can see is rage and destructive focus. She attempts to search for its source, carts and scorpions are hiding Anna. Finally, she simply calls out to the one who seems the most in control, Li’an.

GM Kiora |

Lann, Hinagiku, and Myrna struggle to deal much harm past the steel-like armor that covers the blinded scorpion in front of them, and Kellvar's second shot simply bounces off of its back. Meanwhile, towards the back of the caravan, Anna bravely darts in-between the enormous scorpion's legs, dealing precise cuts to its joints between its stomach and its legs. The scorpion inadvertently shields her from the sudden flash of holy flame that encircles it, causing it to the shriek out in pain. Unfortunately, Unafe had not anticipated the sudden spell, as she was not yet accustomed to fighting alongside Li'an yet. She lands a few feet short of where she had anticipated to come crashing into the scorpion, but she recovers on the second blow, her fist snapping off three of its legs on one side.
Auraelia flies up to the crusader and heals the worst of his wounds. He smiles and says, "Thanks!" before running further away, opening his mouth to call his comrade further back. She was still slowly backing away from the scorpion, her eyes fixed on its bobbing tail, all too-aware of its reach. Once she has made enough distance away, she runs for it, making it just in time for the scorpion to open its maws and fire another blast of flame straight for Anna and Auraelia. Simultaneously, the other scorpion behind of it fires an identical fiery blast aimed at the three who are trying to cut it down.

Auraelia heals Driver #3 for 11 HP, Driver #3 is wounded. Unafe deals 28 damage and 2 DEX damage to Scorpion #, wounding it. Round 4!
Hinagiku, Li'an, Anna, Auraelia, Unafe, Myrna, and Beatrix are Up!

Myrna Riversoar |

Myrna is in the middle of an attack when the scorpion blasts her in the face, and she's mostly saved by her unflappable feeling of zealotry and the spell which Li'an cast on her to protect her against the flames. She blinks, basically unsinged, and stops singing. Realizing that raw power and rage wasn't going to do it against this creature, she shifts gears.
She remembers some of the lessons her grandmothers gave her in magic. She was never as skilled at it as they wished she would become, and this shows in her technique. She tries to use a few Kellid incantations to perform a mobile attack spell, but in the heat of battle, she can't remember them in their precise entirety. Her vocalizations aren't up to par, and her spell ends up failing.
Reflex (prayer): 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 1 = 10 After fire resist 20, 14 damage. 7 damage to Myrna's THP and 7 damage to Beatrix.

Damage (Enlarge, Prayer): 3d6 + 7 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5, 3, 2) + 7 + 1 + 1 = 19
EDIT: Adding concentration to cast defensively.
Concentration: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15
Myrna ends raging song.
She casts bladed dash, but fails her concentration check and does not cast the spell.
Current AC: 23. If attacked, Myrna will increase that to 26 with the active defense Shield ability.

Lieutenant Medici |

Hoping to keep the creature blinded, compromising both its attacks and defense, Beatrix summons her strongest magical ability and calls down the wrath of the Heavens on the demonic scorpion. A blinding flash of white light descends from the sky, bathing the area the scorpion, as well as Myrna, Hinagiku, Lann, and Kellvar, are in. The holy magic sears the flesh of the unworthy while keeping those pure of heart free from harm. This spell performed better against demons, but it would harm the scorpion while vouchsafing her allies.
Damage: 4d8 ⇒ (8, 4, 2, 1) = 15
The scorpion makes a DC 19 Will save to halve the damage and avoid 1 round of blindness.

Ehren Ferron |

Before Ehren can get too annoyed by his spell's failure to take effect, the scorpion in front of him gives a fiery reminder of its presence. His endure elements spell reduces the intense heat of the streaking flames to a dull warmth; sadly, the same could not be said for those standing directly in the path of the blast.
"Fine. One at a time, then," he mutters to himself, giving the scorpion his undivided attention. Even as he contemplates his options, he begins to draw the ley into his body, causing the veins on his arms, legs, and face, as well as his eyes, to glow with silvery light. Seeing the effect that Li'an's spell had on the scorpion, Ehren decides to use the very same one. Unlike hers, however, his would require a bit of tweaking. Li'an had evidently become quite the accomplished sorceress beyond the veil of death - her flames burned far hotter than any natural ones he could produce. So instead, he would just have to rely on another force of nature.
As the silver glow emitted from Ehren's body turns into a soft blue one, in the back of his mind, a disgruntled spirit of fire mumbles something in discontent. Ignoring its voice, the druid evokes a geyser of frigid water that erupts from directly beneath the scorpion's immense body. The pillar of water freezes in an instant, before exploding into a shower of shimmering ice crystals.
Ehren uses place magic and spends 1 MP to cast elemental flame strike at CL 12th, changing its element from fire to frost. Reflex DC 20 to halve the damage.
Cold + Holy Damage (Place Magic): 12d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 1, 4, 3, 1, 5, 2, 6, 1, 2, 3) = 40 50 damage total, before accounting for cold resistance.

Lann of Neathholm |

Thrown off-balance by his last swing, Lann is left in no position to avoid the scorpion's point-blank attack. The gout of flames blasts right through the crusader, but between Li'an's warding spell and the vigor inspired in him by Myrna, he powers right through the inferno. By the time the flames have subsided, the underfolk is singed but otherwise unscathed. Letting out a huff, he resumes his stance once more, inviting the death of the massive vermin.
Tightly gripping his longsword in both hands, Lann lunges forward once more, his eyes shifting erratically as he searches for anything that can pass as a weak point in the creature's armor. It does not particularly matter if he can't find one - that just means he has to hit it harder. Drawing on a wellspring of stamina that he would not usually use so brazenly, the crusader swings his blade, doing so with the ferocity of a being twice his size. Levering his body, he then follows up the attack with a backswing, putting even more force behind it than his last attack.
Reflex DC 23 (Light Infantry Training): 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 9 + 2 = 17 After fire resistance, Lann takes 14 points of damage, leaving him with 4 temporary hit points left.
Lann full attacks, making two Huge longsword attacks on Scorpion #2. He spends 5 stamina points on both attacks to grant himself a +5 competence bonus on both attacks, leaving him with 1 stamina point left.
First Attack (Inspired Rage, Power Attack, 5 Stamina): 1d20 + 15 + 2 - 3 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 15 + 2 - 3 + 5 = 26
Primal Warrior Damage (Inspired Rage, Power Attack): 3d6 + 8 + 2 + 9 ⇒ (1, 3, 3) + 8 + 2 + 9 = 26

Li'an Va'ardalia |

Hinagiku points out the golden mote drifting by her, wondering if Li'an had conjured it, to which she replies, "No, Daisy, I believe it came from our new ally over fighting the other creature." It certainly was magic unfamiliar to her, none of Master Aravashnial's books had discussed any sort of mote of light that could teleport others to safety. If anything it seemed closer to what she'd heard Ary's powers described as than any normal magic.
She smiles as she watches Ehren unleash the same spell she was using, yet somehow manage to alter it elementally on the fly. It was quite the trick, perhaps even one she could use to imbue her flames into other magic spells when needed. More than that though, it was a reminder of how powerful he had become. It wasn't so long ago (for her) that he'd been relying on acid darts to attack his foes, although even back then he'd managed to severely injure the insane dwarf they'd encountered, Millorn, with one. "Nice trick, Ehren!"
Meanwhile, Auralia cries out in surprise as the torrent of flame engulfs her, thankfully her natural mobility and defenses protect her from the worst of the blast. Li'an feels a surge of anger and frustration from the Lyrakien, which she correctly interprets to be Auraelia's desire to help further and understanding that she would be unable to even scratch such a foe.
Li'an calls out to her companion, reassuring her, "Just keep those two safe Arie!" to which the Lyrakien harrumphs and calls back, "I've been doing this way longer than you have!", though Li'an feels her calming down despite her bravado.
Flitting back in the direction the other two were escaping, she dives down to the embankment and invokes some more of her own magic, this time conjuring an illusory wall to block the creature's ability to see them. She gestures with her free hand at the crusaders to get them to lay down alongside her, taking cover on the embankment of the stream, as she drops prone to herself, hoping to use the slope to help keep them safe from any further blasts from the creature.
Auraelia/Reflex: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Hinagiku |

Seeing her allies struggle with the abyssal scorpion they were fighting, Hinagiku decides to give it her all and make it easier for them. Using the beam of fire shot at her, she slips unnoticed under one of the creature’s maw, strikes quickly, and while it is disoriented she sends all the ley she had gathered around her in gargantuan waves right under the monster. Momentarily, the ground seems to ripple like water while the threads whip around the vermin’s legs. Suddenly, everything becomes still as Hinagiku, arms extended, holds the ley. In one final motion, Hinagiku crosses her arms in front of her, pulling on the ley and pulling the scorpion’s legs under its own body.

Anna Chronos |

"Nice legs, dino-girl." Sana says with a grin, vocalizing the inner thought from earlier as she idly spins the starknife in hand.
"Fire!" the gauntlet calls out, melodically, causing Sana to regain focus on the task at hand, once more the gauntlet interposes itself between her and the danger, though this time - with Li'an's magic - the effects simply wash over her, leaving no marks at all. Sana responds tersely, "Right, got it. Paying attention to the ugly thing."
Despite that, when Li'an calls out to 'Arie', Anna can't help but look around suddenly, wondering where the Crusader was... and why she was here. When she doesn't see the woman, she huffs, and opts to take out her frustrations on the thing in front of her. And there was a lot of thing to take it out on. She continues to allow the cadence of the woman and her call to arms, carrying across the battlefield, to build alongside her own fervor. She barely takes note of the giant pillar of frost that threatens to bisect even a creature of the scorpion's size, but still does and files it away for later as she shifts away from the drivers. The light and shadows play across her starknife once more, snicker-snacking as it comes into contact with chitinous joints, tearing into whatever passed for tendons in these things.
When Myrna stops singing, Anna calls across the battlefield, "Hey! I was listening to that!"
Anna five foot steps down, ensuring that the creature couldn't keep her in the line and go for the NPCs once more. She then full attacks with the scorpion. Her AC is 32 against Scorpion 3 and 30 against all other targets. She spends a swift action to gain two additional points of illumination, bringing her up to 8 (40 feet of bright light). Unafe Two-Hearted |

Unafe nods and grins at the compliment from the odd warrior who had mysteriously arrived at the perfect time. "I wanted to make sure you weren't in trouble...but you clearly handle that starknife just fine."
And hopefully the starknife portends that you were sent by the Song of the Spheres, and not somehow connected to these monstrosities...
Unafe slams her shoulder into the beast and gives it her most ferocious war-honk...but then scowls at herself as her follow-up punch slides right off it's enormous carapace. In frustration she slams her fist into its shell one more time, hoping for a soft spot.

GM Kiora |

Thanks to Li'an and Myrna's magic, the heroes escape the sudden blasts of flames relatively unscathed.
There are now two scorpions left - one that has been blinded by Beatrix's magic, and one that has had half of its legs torn off by a blow from Unafe. The blinded scorpion is now coated in rime from a blast of the Archdruid's magic, freezing it in place long enough for Lann to ram his sword down one of its throats. He retreats while it snarls and attempts to counterattack, while Hinagiku pulls the monster down towards the ground entirely.
Meanwhile, the other scorpion is blasted once again by flame, while Anna expertly cuts the Scorpion's remaining legs down causing it to crash into the earth at the same time Hinagiku brings the other scorpion down. Vulnerable and mostly immobilized, she can simply hop onto its back and bring her blade crashing down just behind its three heads, severing the ganglia within and knocking out the demonic insect entirely.
The two Crusaders do what Auraelia says, ducking down below the bank. Their eyes widen, and they do not question the wall that suddenly appears before them, blocking their line of sight off from the spectacular battle going on beyond it.

Book keeping: Ehren deals 40 damage to Scorpion #2, it is grazed. Lann deals 57 damage to Scorpion #2, and it is wounded. Hinagiku batters and trips Scorpion #2 and deals 5 damage to it. Li'an deals 38 damage to Scorpion #3. Anna deals 63 damage to Scorpion #3, which KOs it. Kellvar fumbles and feels insecure, taking -1 on attack rolls for 1d4 ⇒ 3 rounds or until he crits. Beatrix deals 7 damage to Scorpion #2. It is only dazzled now.
Unafe's turn is now invalid because Scorpion #3 is dead.
Unafe is up!

Unafe Two-Hearted |

Take two!
Unafe nods and grins at the compliment from the odd warrior who had mysteriously arrived at the perfect time. "I wanted to make sure you weren't in trouble...but you clearly handle that starknife just fine."
Unafe gives an approving nod, as the stranger carves off the scorpion's last remaining legs and sends it collapsing into the dirt.
Unafe looks behind her, sees that there's still one standing, and leaps. She slams her shoulder into the beast and gives it her most ferocious war-honk...but then scowls at herself as her follow-up punch slides right off it's enormous carapace. In frustration she slams her fist into its shell one more time, hoping for a soft spot.

GM Kiora |

Unafe's last strike smashes through the creature's exoskeleton, snapping off it's front leg in the process. The scorpion screeches, and, left sprawled out on the ground, starts to dig into the dirt with its remaining legs and claws. It seems to simply bury itself, burrowing leg-first into the dirt below.
Dex dmg: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Book keeping: Unafe intimidates Scorpion #2 for 1 round. Unafe deals 70 damage to Scorpion #2 and reduces the scorpion's speed to 10' and deals 2 DEX damage on a crit. It is in critical condition.
Scorpion #2 triggers AoOs from Unafe, Hinagiku, Lann and Myrna.

Hinagiku |

A new ally? Hinagiku ponders Li’an’s response just as she slides away from underneath the falling scorpion. Hopefully it would not be the elf woman dressed in green who had drawn many crusaders, such as Staunton Vhane, to their demise.

Myrna Riversoar |

AoO (Prayer): 1d20 + 14 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 14 + 1 = 20
Myrna unleashes another blow with her axe, but like her others so far, it is slow and clumsy.

Unafe Two-Hearted |

As it attempts to scuttle into the ground, Unafe whacks it again on its side.
AoO+flank-grazed: 1d20 + 19 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 19 + 2 - 1 = 37

Damage: 3d6 + 9 ⇒ (2, 6, 2) + 9 = 19

Lann of Neathholm |

Lann blinks, abruptly finding clarity of mind amid the fierce melee. His resulting perplexity does not distract him from swinging his blade at the retreating scorpion, however, though his strike does lack the ferocity of his previous ones.
Attack (Flanking, Power Attack): 1d20 + 15 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (11) + 15 + 2 - 3 = 25
Damage (Power Attack): 1d8 + 8 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 9 = 25

GM Kiora |

Unafe whacks through the last scorpion's carapace, cracking it open and spilling out white and green bug goo. The scorpion, still half-buried, stops moving.
Unafe crit: 3d6 + 9 ⇒ (6, 4, 5) + 9 = 24
Book keeping: Hinagiku deals 12 damage to Scorpion #2. Unafe crits and deals 43 damage to Scorpion #2, which kills it.
Combat Ends
The sounds of battle seem to cease, allowing Auraelia a moment to look around. She notices a large crate, half-buried in the muck in the ditch maybe twenty feet away.
On the wagon, Kellvar remains tense, squinting and watching the ground around of them. After several moments pass, it seems that the coast is clear, at least for the moment. He re-holsters his bow and then sits back on the wagon, his forehead cradled in his hands, and his elbows resting on his knees.
Maeri moves out, her arms spread. "By the Inheritor, that was something else! I can see now that Lord-Commander Tirablade chose the right people to guard us. Thank you."

Li'an Va'ardalia |

Releasing her spell, Auraelia flits up off the ground, brushing herself off as she does. She gives the now defunct scorpions a nasty look before looking around. "It should..." She begins to address the crusaders before realizing she'd seen something in the muck out of the corner of her eye. "It should be safe now," she finishes, distracted by the box apparently jutting out of the dirt.
Before she can do anything further, Li'an calls out to her, having felt her companion's sense of puzzlement over finding something. "Is everything alright over there, Arie?" the elf calls out as she herself drifts to the ground again.
"Is everyone alright?" she turns looking at her allies. They had certainly made short work of the giant scorpions. While she was less surprised about Ehren, Hinagiku and Unafe's capabilities--she'd heard plenty about them from Isilme and Irabeth in months she'd been around--the fact Myrna seemed more than capable of keeping up with the others was more surprising. "If anyone is still wounded, come over to me," she adds, looking around at those that had been hit by the scorpions blasts of fire.
"Don't mind me, I'll be there in a second!" Auraelia calls back to Li'an. "You two go join the others. You should as well!" she adds, looking at the starknife-wielding adventurer that had so fortuitously shown up at the right time. Fluttering closer to the crate, she focuses her senses upon it, attempting to discern if there was anything sort of magical or evilness to it.
Perception (guidance): 1d20 + 16 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 16 + 1 = 29
Meanwhile, Li'an--her hair now having 'cooled' to its normal fierce red color--waits for the others to gather close enough to be healed before unleashing a wave of scintillating colors over the area. The dim light washes over those gathered, ironically with a feeling much like a cold draft blowing across them.
Channel Energy: 5d6 + 7 ⇒ (5, 2, 1, 4, 6) + 7 = 25
"Very nice tricks, Myrna, Lieutenant!" she says, nodding to the two of them. "And you as well," she says, calling out to the adventurer who had joined them. "That was some timing, thank you for helping out! I'm Li'an, and the Lyrakien you passed by is Arie."
"Auraelia!" the faerie-like outsider calls back distractedly.
"Who do we have to thank for helping out?" Li'an adds, ignoring Arie's half-hearted protest with a mischievous grin.

Anna Chronos |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

"Definitely needed help, though!" she calls as Unafe simply leaps back away with little word, "Was a bit worried about getting all three of us to safety there for a bit." she says, more quietly, looking back to the pair, then rolling her shoulder. She stands still for a moment, looking about warily until she's certain that there are no threats. Using total defense to get Martial Focus back.
Sana takes the time to finish executing the nearest scorpion while the drivers head back over to the wagons, simply sliding the blade straight through the thing's ventral nerve, figuring that would more than do the job of finishing it off. Min damage is 36 on a coup, I'll roll if you need me to :)
She takes a moment to draw a long scarve out of her bag and use it to wipe down her starknife before it goes back into her pack, all the while crossing the battlefield. Amber vanishes from sight around the time she gets back to its light. She tilts her head, then puts her hands on her hips, leans forward, and squints through her glasses at Li'an. "Li'an..?" she questions for a moment, before her gauntlet chimes in, cheerily calling, "Fen'wen!"
Anna nods slowly, "Yeah, that's Fen'wen." she responds, "You've done something new with the..." she begins, before waving her hand in front of her own face, and then waving her hands above her hair, fingers flickering like flames, and shadows dancing along with them.
"And the fire thing is new as well." she adds, but then turns towards the giant woman. "And it's good to see you back, Major! Well, not see-you see-you. We never met!" She adds cheerily, then looks to the fox, the saurian, the splinter, and the mongrelman both between and further to the right. "I'm afraid I don't recognize anyone else. Well, Dino-lady, but only from reports as well... but not a name." Her tone lowers as she speaks to Li'an conspiratorially, though certainly loud enough to hear. She stays friendly and grinning, all the same. It's clear she needs introductions to or from the others, though she doesn't introduce herself, expecting Li'an to do so on her behalf, not quite clicking that something wasn't right. "Also... kinda weird seeing someone wearing the Sarkorian Archdruid's garb that isn't Ehren, not gonna lie. Kinda brave, even. Is it a costume or something?"

Li'an Va'ardalia |

Li'an gives Anna a bemused expression when she both directly refers to her as Li'an, and then her gauntlet uses Fen'wen. She looks up at Anna's gesture towards her hair, then looks up at her own hair, grabbing a few locks and looking at the color. "Well, yes, it's been that way for a while, and I am Li'an, that's true..." she says, trying to get a feel for the pale-skinned woman before her. Ary had been the only person to ever call her Fen'wen, and she certainly had never introduced her to anyone close enough to both of them to use that name as well.
"But how did you--and your gauntlet?-- =know the name Fen'wen? I am certain I haven't met you before, and Ary didn't mention anyone before she... " Li'an sighs, wondering what Ary was up to in Azir. "Before she left."
The entire situation didn't make sense as an attempt at infiltration, she and Val never would've tried such a poorly thought-out gambit. Appealing to authority or using identities of known people who didn't associate much with the target was one thing, but to masquerade as someone close to the target without actually knowing anything would just be crazy.
The reference to Ehren not being Ehren and getting Myrna's rank wrong just drove home the absurdity of the situation. No Ivory Templar or demon would make such grave mistakes in attempting to fool them. Li'an frowns and looks the girl over, wondering if there was something she was missing about the situation.
"Do any of you know her?" Li'an looking at Myrna specifically, since she had also been referred to, though by the wrong rank entirely.

Myrna Riversoar |

While Beatrix gathers with Li'an to benefit from the elf's healing, Myrna is totally unhurt. Eyes narrowed, she stalks in a little circle around the caravan, looking into the hills for any more creatures coming. Satisfied that the attack is over, she slips her axe into its hook and her shield back onto her back.
She stays in giant form as she walks over to investigate the girl who had appeared from the hills to fight with them against the scorpions. She shakes her head when Li'an asks if she knows the girl, her lips twisted with some confusion. "I don't remember you, girl," she says, her voice deeper in her giant form. "What's your name? Where did you come from? What were you doing out here in the wastes all by yourself?"

Unafe Two-Hearted |

Unafe shrinks back to her human form, but glances curiously--and with growing apprehension--between the newcomer and the people she claimed to know.
The newcomer sees her become a tall, lanky, tightly-muscled nineteen year old Kellid with pale skin and thick, wild, brown hair. Her puzzled face is painted with orange-ochre and sky-blue clay. When addressed as 'dino-lady', she considers introducing herself but first just looks the newcomer up and down appraisingly while she talks to Li'an and Myrna.
Danger gone, Sicrwydd comes out of her pouch to look around, and sniffs at the newcomer.
Surrounding Unafe, the cloud of ghostly dinosaurs and ancestor spirits start to settle down when the last beast falls.
Anything interesting about Anna's smell?

Anna Chronos |

"Still nice legs." Anna says cheekily to Unafe just after she transforms. Anna doesn't smell like she's been in the Worldwound for long, in fact there are hints of a scent of fresh flowers and... dust? Despite dots of glitter and careful application of makeup, her shadow doesn't seem to be cooperating with the sun. She reaches into her quiver and pulls out a lacy parasol lightning-fast, throwing it over her shoulder and twisting it absently with both hands such that dots of light dapple across her skin.
"Uh..." Anna trails off as Li'an doesn't seem to recognize her at all. Things were clearly not right. "Like... left as in went to Vigil..?" she asks, then looks to Ehren, "Did she hit her head or something? Did I hit my head or something?" before looking to Myrna, then looking up higher to her face. "Oh, sorry. Captain Bishop, I've never quite made it up to the rank you were when you disappeared. Where did you two disappear to, anyway?" she asks, looking back and forth between Myrna and Unafe, "You were last spotted north of Drezen a few years back. Did you get fey-stolen? As for me... Starstone test. Honestly, looking for Ary. Part of me was hoping for a party?" she looks back over her shoulder, "But not that kind of party. You called to her a second ago?"

Ehren Ferron |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

With the battle over, Ehren allows his connection to the ley to return to its resting state, causing his veins to go dim again. Himself unscathed, he takes a moment to survey the damage done by the battle and is relieved to see that there were no casualties. Sensing this thought, a voice snarls a protest into his ear. The druid looks to the poor horses that were torn apart by the scorpions and nods somberly, before conceding, Not entirely without consequences.
He still has not grown fully accustomed to sharing headspace with the spirits, if only because they usually keep to themselves unless spoken to directly. Of course, they were quite vocal when they wanted to be, especially when they were all in agreement. For one, he can tell that they are quite pleased by the deaths of the demonic vermin. Ehren smiles at Myrna, clearly impressed by her prowess. He would tell her as much aloud, if not for the slightly more pressing matter of their mysterious good samaritan.
“I’m sorry, do I know you?” Ehren asks when the strange woman mentions his name, arching one of his silver-white eyebrows quizzically. The druid is not in the habit of forgetting people he has met before, least of all those who left a strong impression on him. If the way this tiefling(?) is acting now is anything to go by, she would almost certainly have done just that. Somehow, the more she talks, the more puzzled Ehren becomes.
“Bishop? Starstone?” he repeats, struggling to make sense of anything she is saying. He exchanges glances with Li’an, who seems no less confused. If Jerribeth was trying to stupefy them into letting their guard down, then she might well have succeeded. Still, she did not feel like a threat, and she did save lives from the giant scorpions… if she did not somehow have a hand in luring them out to begin with.
“I am Ehren of Clan Ferron, Archdruid of Sarkoris,” he says finally, hoping to set things straight by making a definitive statement rather than asking another question.
