About Lieutenant MediciAppearance: Beatrix is a tiefling. Her skin is classic red and her horns are short, red, and point straight up. She carries herself with poise and bearing. Her uniform is smoothly pressed. She favors the color black and favors metal accessories, frequently dressing in tunic, pants, coat and hat, paired with steel earrings, necklace, beltloops and boot-tips. When out in the field she replaces her middle layer for leathers but keeps the long black coat. She wears the mark of her rank and allegiance to the Crusades on her left shoulder. In her hands is either nothing or a book. Beatrix is 30 years old. Beatrix de Medici
Background: Beatrix is from the city of Egorian, the capital of Cheliax. Born to a wealthy merchant family, her early life up until late adolescence was dominated by the wishes of her family. With an older sister and her devilish features, Beatrix could never serve as the family head, but she was still educated and pampered and kept around. Her expected role was to be the family archivist and accountant, and she was not allowed to wear the family crest when she left the house. Mostly she stayed inside and tended to her studies, hoping to one day be of use to her family. Her rebellious teenage phase added some complications to her life. As second-class citizens, Chelaxian tieflings necessarily had to adapt some of their own culture and community in order to get their needs and services met. Beatrix became exposed to the idea that her family was oppressing her at some of these underground tiefling clubs where they met to support one another. She became connected to the club through a friend -- one of the house servants. Once part of the tiefling community, she became increasingly distanced from her family. She ran away from home at the age of 19. She quietly stole some money and a passport for trade from the family chest and stole away on a boat headed north on the river. She traveled alone, experiencing some difficulties due to her sheltered upbringing. She had no real goal until she met a recruiter for the Crusades while traveling through Nirmathas. The Wound and its horrors were described to her, and the faithful of Iomedae that defended the border. She immediately became fascinated, and from then onward was stuck to the Crusade recruiter. She eagerly took his copy of The Acts of Iomedae -- a story of a heroic mortal woman who went on to change the world! -- and earnestly got on a boat with the other recruits he had managed to pick up. Once traveling to Mendev, she needed to undergo training. She showed aptitude for clerical powers and was taken under the wing of a mentor cleric of Iomedae. Her training proceeded at a normal pace before she was assigned to a squadron as their cleric. She’s been fighting against the demons ever since. She met Myrna when the two were in training, and gained a respect for the powerful Sarkorian warrior when the pair were caught -- along with several of their trainee mates -- alone in the Wound. They had gone on a training exercise to the border of the Wound, but something had gone wrong. While scouting ahead, their captain was caught by babau and killed. They were miles from safe shelter without their Crusader escort. Myrna rallied the trainees and used her advanced strength and skills to defend them from demonic attackers while they retreated back to the border. They lost only one trainee instead of the entire group. Myrna got special attention from then on, but she also gained a friend in the quiet but loyal Beatrix. Beatrix has been enlisted in the Crusades for nine years now. Her exposure to other clerics and frequent use of her abilities in battle have honed her divine power to a razor-sharp edge, and her educated mind has proved a consistent asset to whatever team she’s been assigned to. Her most recent assignment (before joining Myrna’s Hellfire Squadron, that is) was research at the station now established at Ghalcor’s old tower. Her combination of bookish knowledge and divine spellcasting ability made her a natural choice. She was recalled when Myrna was given her command. The two had had a few encounters together since their initial meeting as trainees, and had a deep respect for one another. Myrna requested that Beatrix be transferred to serve as her lieutenant, and the higher-ups granted her request. For the last four years, Beatrix has been the resident loremaster and cleric of the Hellfire Squadron, and Myrna’s second-in-command.
