I think the thing you're missing (and the huge design flaw on Paizo's end) is that building an animal companion, at no point, references the bestiary. The animal companion entry doesn't even have the docile trait. The bestiary entry for the horse is as relevant as the hill giant entry is for building a bear animal companions.
Thanks for understanding and I agree that horses get it rough too often. I once had a GM say my horse couldn't grapple because horses don't have hands. =(
If you want to trade out a feat for multiattack, go for it. That should lessen the blow some.
Edit: At my roommates insistence I looked up Alain, the iconic cavalier, and sure enough the level 4 and 7 versions of his mount have hooves as secondary attacks.

Cool... will do... I'm looking at Villains Codex right now and it seems they're still statting cavaliers with Multiattack and the hooves at -2.
So Paizo seems to have tacitly dropped the proverbial ball on this and just agreed that people can just go buy a war trained bestiary horse for 300gp and get a superior horse that way. Of course, with leveling the crappy horse companion will end up better, but it's not cool at ALL! :P

![]() |

Also, the character generator I'm using put their hooves as primary... so I had no reason to doubt the 4th level advancement referred to the docile nature of horses... :P

![]() |

All I'm gonna say on the matter is that the horse isn't actually the cavaliers main class feature. Look at what you can get when you trade it out. IUS and a few combat maneuver boosts is prolly the best trade on offer.

Horses are mad powerful. You have not witnessed the might of a mounted warrior with the proper feats. "I don't fight on horseback often, but when I do, I drink Dos Equis!" :P

![]() |

Horses are powerful, but it's very hard to get a charge done (at least in PFS). I think my eidolon-riding summoner got to do his first charge when he was level 7 or so. But yes, it does feel sweet when it happens :)

![]() |

If you need a horse for the map this one looks close to what I imagine.
This one should do for the times when I'm mounted. Not great but that's the best I can find... I couldn't find one that had a white horse with a warrior that's not enclosed in steel/full-plate... Chaine has black hair and is more lightly armored (breastplate only).

Farg can you break down your damage modifiers? Your character sheet has you at +10 before buffs.
+5 strength
+3 medium stuff (seance and spirit bonus)
+2 ???
Your bard/barbarian buff modifiers are wonky too. I think they're 2 too low.
+5 strength
+3 medium stuff (seance and spirit bonus)
+2 ???
+2 furious amulet
+2 rage
+3 luck
Are you including your furious amulet in your non-raging stats?

![]() |

Are you including your furious amulet in your non-raging stats?
I think so yes...that would explain why one is 2 too high and the other 2 too low...

![]() |

Since it seems I'm correcting people's character sheets, I'll do the whole party!
Drusilla, your base CMD is 2 points too low. It should be 22.
+4 bab
-2 strength
+2 dexterity
+6 wisdom
+1 monk
+1 dodge
Thanks :)
I think monk and dodge was missing, I never remember those add also to CMD. Hmm, Drusilla profile says she would have additional +4 CMD vs grapple and +2 vs trip/reposition. But I can't remember where those would come from. +2 vs grapple of course from improved grapple, but the other two..?Let me know if there's anything else that looks wrong...

Okay, Round 2. Farg can you break down your attack bonus for me? You have your base as +12 while channeling champion spirit.
That would be:
+4 BAB
+5 Strength
+1 Seance Bonus
+2 ???Also, what do you have that pushes the influence penalty out to influence 4?
Influence: A Medium can trade out a spirit boon for two extra points of influence. Farg is not benefiting from the 2 free EWP granted by champion spirit. And that is actually noted in my sheet under class abilities. Here's the relevant text from the Archives:
During his seance, the medium can choose to channel a weaker spirit to gain its help without incurring as much of its influence. If he does so, he can forgo any number of spirit powers, starting with his most powerful spirit power. For each spirit power he forgoes, the medium can use his spirit surge ability twice without incurring influence.
When rereading the Medium I noticed that I may never use spirit surge more than once per round though! Better keep that in mind.
Attack modifiers:
+4 BAB
+5 Strength
+1 Seance Bonus
+2 Drusilla's Advice
+3 Archaeologistsluck
-1 STR penalty from fatigue
-2 Power Attack
=+12
I did miss the fatigue penalty to damage on round 2 despite including it in round 1 and basing my math on my previous round post...

Ah, found it.. it's Ring of Ki Mastery that gives the bonuses

@Farg: how did you score that gore attack? I'm thinking about making a similar natural-attack character at some point. Yours is pretty badass... which other races would be good for this? (tengu looks good, of course, but what about ratfolk, aasimar, etc.? are there others?) Lastly, if you know of other ways to gain similar badassery without multiclassing to medium please feel free to suggest away... :P

It's from the horror feat he has.
Which reminds me: Farg, you need to be lawful to take that feat. What kind of lawful are you?

@DM Feral: (digging on some of the horse threads, I found this, which seems pretty official to me; as it is straight from the horse's mouth... pun intended... :P)
So the issue appears a bit less clear cut than I thought; I'll abide by your GM decision for the module but I'm starting to understand why some of the PC generators out there spit out the cavalier's horse with primary hooves...

![]() |

I'm not blaming you or the way Paizo's run with the horse so far (no pun intended ;) ) I just thought this post was interesting as it was made during the cavalier playtest before the APG came out (now, that's ancient shyte, and water under the bridge since then... I know... :P )

Upon further reflection (and a note from my roommate), you're a barbarian! You cannot be lawful. Farg, you are a dirty cheaterpants.
Please forgo all future gore attacks. You're welcome to trade out the feat now.

@GM: I got the chronicle, but looks like you marked high tier gold there.

![]() |

Got my sheet! Looks good! Thanks again for running such an efficient ship Feral! And thank you for catching my error!

![]() |

T'was a great game, but extremely lame gold for an 8th level adventure! is this standard? (haven't compared to other chronicles yet)
I will be on my guard from similar season 1 scenarios in the future! ;)
