Asvald Bjornson |
Asvald frowns as his blow turns out to be ineffective and tries again.
Slash: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 1 = 9
Damage: 1d8 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 1 = 13
DM Carbide |
Asvald's blow misses the creature. Your other hit did a little bit of damage, Asvald. Not your fault it's immune to crits and has DR/bludgeoning.
The creature gives up on fighting Eva and goes after Kragnor. It flows over the dwarf, mouths agape, and manages to grab onto him with several of its mouths. Take 7 HP, Kragnor, and you are grappled.

Kali Starr |
With Kragnor in immediate danger, Kali casts Shocking Grasp, moves north of the creature, and tries to electrocute it with her touch.
Kali will move through the creature's threatened spaces, but since it's grappling I don't believe it gets an AoO.
Shocking Grasp Touch: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Electric Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 4) = 13

Kragnor Stonebreaker |
I don;t think it mattered, but I just remembered, Karg gets +2 AC and CMD (grapple) vs Aberrations.
"Bloody hell!" Kragnor roars as the creature engulfs him.
CMD: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 5 + 1 = 15
Struggling, Kragnor tries to free himself.
DM Carbide |
Kali's spell sends the creature into frenzied convulsions, and it collapses into a far less mobile puddle.
Out of combat!
DM Carbide |
There is nothing else on the level except for some muffled sounds coming from one of the sarcophagi in the crypt in the NW corner of the map. Is there anything you'd like to do to investigate?
Melody Flaxseed |
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Being still a bit wounded from earlier, Melody remembers to pull out her wand and heal herself.
"Hey, let's go investigate those muffled sounds coming from the sarcophagi in the crypt in the northwest corner!"
Kali Starr |
After performing a small victory dance over what's left of the creature, Kali nods in agreement with Melody, "Yeah, let's go. Pathfinders are supposed to be explorers, right?"
DM Carbide |
One of the sarcophagi, in the south of the tombs, is secured shut with iron bands. There is a sound as of movement from inside.
Kali Starr |
Disable Device examination: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
Kali takes a closer look at the iron bands, and concludes, "Weird. Is there anyway of telling what's inside without opening it? My vote is no, but I'm probably still affected by the gas fumes."
Asvald Bjornson |
Engineering: 1d20 ⇒ 4
Asvald ponders the metal bands as well but doesn't come up with any useful information.
"They certainly look to be made from metal..."
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Disable: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
Kragnor glances at the bands. "They've been secured for a long time."
DM Carbide |
What do you want to do about the sealed sarcophagus?
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
When no one else voices an opinion, Kragnor grasps the bands and tries to wrench them open. "Everybody good with this plan? Obviously, sumpin' is in here."
If everyone is good with opening.
STR: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
DM Carbide |
As Kragnor removes the bands, the lid bursts open, revealing an emaciated figure in cerements!

"A wight! Undead, my favorite! Better get out of the way, Wang!" Kragnor roars, as he darts west, giving himself room to wield his hammer.

Swinging his hammer in a wide arc, he slams it into the wight.
DM Carbide |
Kragnor hits the wight solidly, but doesn't quite drop it even though it's still getting its bearings.

DM Carbide |
Good question. The map seems to indicate that it starts out prone, but the text says it bursts out as soon as the bands are off. I doubt it'll make a difference given the timing of the round. Assume it stood up as it pushed off the lid.

Eva and Melody finish it off.
Out of combat! And done with the level! Chronicle sheets coming; please make your day job rolls in the Discussion thread.
Asvald Bjornson |
Nice!
Asvald is relieved to see the dangerous undead swiftly dispatched.
"Good work everyone. Shall we sweep the floor once more and then return to town for drinks?"
Senja Kala |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
The agile Senja steps back, prepared to rain a shadowy sort of doom down upon the misbegotten wight, a strike of such devastating power that even the most stalwart wight would be blasted into bits of shadow. Seeing the creature fall, however, Senja puts away his thesaurus and gives a little hop. "Well done, all!"
Excellent! Thanks as always for running, Carbide!
Eva Baldursdóttir |
Eva nods once at Asvald's suggestion. "A drink would not be amiss, I think. You are purchasing?" she asks with a twinkle in her eye.
Asvald Bjornson |
"Why not", the young northern man is quick to answer. "Mead for everyone!"
DM Carbide |
Several days of celebration conclude with the arrival of various requested items from the nearest Lodge. Your reports out of the Spire continue to draw interest and rewards. Cynara and her guards have finished clearing the ground level, and have moved their operations to the level you just cleared to take advantage of the Splinterden layout.
One bit of closure before you return to your exploration: word comes to Fort Inevitable of a small band of bandits, led by the notorious Lenik Hastenfor, found dead in the Echo Wood. With one exception, the bandits were unwounded (but appeared to have been poisoned); the exception was a man who was apparently killed by Hastenfar before the half-elf succumbed to the poison. (The description of the wounded one is familiar; he's the one you let go.)
You once again descend into the Spire, this time continuing past what is now the lowest outpost of the Pathfinder Society. The stairs take you down another three hundred feet or so; this leg does not take you near the Spire core. As you near the bottom, all of you catch a whiff of a strong, reptilian sort of scent.
Senja Kala |
Knowledge (local): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Senja gives Eva a quick look, then says, "You smell it too, eh? At first I thought it was just Kragnor, but I know that smell. Though I've never faced them, I once met a man who showed me a flask filled with the sweat of a horrible thing called a troglodyte, smelled just like this. They're evil, reptilian humanoids that are known to lair in the deep places of Golarion. I guess we're deep enough for them now."
Carbide - do I get any questions about them, based on that stellar roll? If so, how about defenses, special attacks, then DM's choice.
DM Carbide |
They're not terribly intelligent, though they can use weapons, and their stench can be bad enough to impair their foes' ability to fight. They tend to be religious--their leaders are usually some sort of divine spellcaster.
Asvald Bjornson |
"You want to try talking our way past them or shall we make with the smiting?"
Kali Starr |
I wish I would have kept one of those masks. It might block out this terrible smell.
"Do these Troglodyte things usually want to negotiate? Everything else down here so far has just tried to kill us." Kali notes with some distaste.
Melody Flaxseed |
"I doubt the divine influence they follow is a nice one. I am fine with the smiting option. Besides, their stench is liable to make me lose both my breakfasts."
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Kragnor holds his forearm to his nose. "Don't know how you go about negotiating, when ya can't even breath...."
DM Carbide |
The map is updated.
The stairs descend to a small chamber of smooth, hewn stone. It's lit by a dim greenish light from two strange, torchlike devices on the walls. A metal door with a simple-looking latch mechanism (also glowing green) is in the middle of the north wall. The walls and ceiling are decorated with abstract drawings and writings in bright colors. There is something disturbing about them, though it may just be the way in which the colors interact with the green ambient light.
Fort saves, everyone!
Next to the door is a troglodyte wearing a colorful leather garment and carrying a walking stick. It looks up as you come into view and--well, it puts its face into something vaguely smile-like. In Common, it says, "I welcome you to Godhome. You wish to make sacrifice now? Visit? Take holy grub, maybe?"
Kali Starr |
Fort: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
"We're just tourists, why don't you tell us about this place?" Kali asks, forcing herself not to pinch her nose.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Kragnor Stonebreaker |
Fort: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25
"What do you sacrifice to a holy grub? what is a holy grub?" Kragnor says, trying to breathe through his mouth, only.
DM Carbide |
He smiles again. "This is the home of the Godbox! We--the Servants of Thagh--live here in peace. Give the god some iron-metal, and it will bless you and send you on your way! All good visitors make gifts of iron-metal to the god!"
