The Way of the Kirin MAP

On the eastern continent of Tian Xia, the Pathfinder Society remains a small player in the greater political landscape, but Amara Li, head of the Lantern Lodge in the teeming city of Goka, has plans to change that. In order to secure the Pathfinder Society's place as an influential organization on the far side of the world from the Grand Lodge in Absalom, she must orchestrate an alliance with the mysterious Way of the Kirin. But the longtime rival of the Pathfinder Society, the Aspis Consortium, has plans to form an alliance of its own, and if the consortium succeeds, the Pathfinder Society's hopes of cementing their place in the Dragon Empires could be dashed forever.

I just wanted to throw out that these new Faction Cards are out.

Also here is a PbP related post;

Logistically, how are we to handle these cards in PbP?

I recommend a player provide an out-of-character notice to the GM that he is attempting to complete one of the Faction Journal Card's goals during play (and provide the relevant goal's text). At the end of the session, the GM can confirm whether or not the PC fulfilled the conditions and instruct the player to check the relevant check box.

Since these do not require direct GM signatures, this process should not require constant scanning and sending of files.

I take it we start using these immediately? Not that anyone here particularly has time to perform anything.

Shadow Lodge

||CORE Rotating DM ||Fingerprints||King Xeros ||Serpent's Skull||

You can, and its probably too late for now, but maybe not. Read over the card for your Faction, and if there is something you think applies for this scenario, let me know.

You can only do one per game, and it doesn't get checked until the end.

Okay, finished, Reported, and HERE IS A LINK to the Chronicle Sheets.

We finished in time, something I was a little worried about these last few days, but overall, I think it wen rather well.

Please let me know if there are any issues with the Chronicle Sheet.

Also, something I like to do is get feedback on how you all think thing went.

Please, if you have a little time, let me know what you liked, or what you didn't like. How can I improve? What about the scenario was good/bad? What about my running of it was cool or not so much?

I'd really like to know how I can make things better in the future.

Or, if you have any questions on why something happened a certain way, now that the game is over, feel free to ask.

I will be leaving in a few days, (and I will make this thread inactive once I see what you all have to say), so I will not be able to do anything else for a month or so, but I rather enjoyed it.

The whole house under siege thing was different and I think it would have been a bit more interesting in person, it was a tough thing to do online. Also, I don't get why this ended the Lantern Lodge.

Shadow Lodge

||CORE Rotating DM ||Fingerprints||King Xeros ||Serpent's Skull||

Just be glad you haven't played through the "end" of the Shadow Lodge. . .

It was, to put it nicely, stupid.

But, the official, metagame reason is that some people felt that there where too many Factions, and for whatever reasons (I personally have a feeling a few individuals whispering into the leaderships ear), both the Lantern Lodge and the Shadow Lodge got the axe.

Amara-Li has kind of had finding the Way of he Kirin as a personal goal for a while. If you have played First Steps (now retired), there was a hint in it when/if you locate a set of documents "The Debt of the Kirin".

Also in Haunting of Hinojai, it plays into it as well, as the haunted house was an ancient Way of the Kirin post.

A lot of people where rather disappointed with how these two Factions ended, though they found this one much more rewarding than Rivalry's End.

Well, in an attempt to be helpful I'll address some of your questions:

I liked your use of round recaps and especially appreciated you keeping track of our damage sustained each time. Bolding the folks who were up is definitely a useful approach, and one I've used in my own games.

The scenario was surprisingly short. I kind of expected another couple of waves before the BBEG fight. Still, it felt like a nice, tightly organized adventure. The social parts at the beginning were nice, in my opinion.

I've GM'ed First Steps Part II and played Haunting of Hinojai, and it was nice to see the Way of the Kirin storyline get more attention. Now I'll need to play "Of Kirin and Kraken" from Season 6.

The chronicle appears accurate as well.

Thanks for taking us on as your group, and good luck in your upcoming deployment. Return home safely!

Shadow Lodge

||CORE Rotating DM ||Fingerprints||King Xeros ||Serpent's Skull||

Part of the reason that it seems short is for two reasons, really.

One, in some of the fights, it was clear that the enemies just couldn't realistically do much, so I tended to sort of fast forward a bit at the end. This was partially for time and partially because I think it may have become a bit annoying, with everyone needing to wait so long (PbP) just to get one more action that may or may not have been that important. One average hit would do it.

The other is that the first half of the scenario was really about micromanaging actions. Building defenses, inspecting each room, finding the path that leads to the house, and things like that. It just doesn't translate so well, (I my experience), to PbP.

I did try to sort of hype up the Asian theme a little that I found was kind of lacking, but I also didn't want to pus it to much.

Finally, I did skip the extra encounter. In retrospect, I think we could have done it, but at the time, I didn't want to risk it. I was really torn, because I think it would have been the most interesting, in a sense, as it's a rare encounter. I personally like these sort of trophy encounters, and I've never fought an Ogre Magi in PFS. But, I honestly just wasn't sure and I didn't want to risk not being able to finish.

Yea like others have said I liked this scenario and the recaps you threw in along with the personalization you gave in terms of trap kills and such, also liked the bolding of people who were up, like usual great game DM Beckett look forward to gaming with you again. Side question, when I was disguising as a servant, what were you thinking I was gonna try, and did I let you down? Thanks.

Felt really short, but it didn't feel like you were making it short, the scenario just is short. In a way this scenario feels like a carbon copy of Quest for Perfection 3... which actually made this scenario quite dull for me.

Sure, social encounters were nice, but it seems to be trend for scenarios to start off with lots of talk and preparation only to succumb to mindless slaughter and end abruptly. I'll have to read the scenario myself just so to fill my curiosity.

Skipping mindless combats was a good thing to do, although I was a little disappointed how all the buffs I finally got up (for the first time in my character's career) were suddenly wiped away. Don't worry about it though, better to keep the game flowing.

I feel like I picked the wrong character to this adventure, but I don't really have other suitable character for this tier. I stuck with Rravn's odd behavior and skipped asking questions, probably much to GM's dismay.

Disclaimer:
I know I'm very harsh when it comes to scenario feedback, so don't take it too seriously.

Well, the main issue is that I am about to leave for at least a solid month, and I am not sure if I will have internet for a good portion of it, and secondarily how good it would be. If people are interested, (we also have the issue of needing to find a scenario), I'll consider it, but everyone must understand that there is a real likelihood that it may need to go on break early on, and I honestly just can not do anything about that.

So, if everyone is okay with that, and we can find a scenario ASAP, I'd consider it. It might be necessary to look at higher level material, and probably need to also be Season 0-3 or 4 for simplicity's sake. Modules and APs are not an option right now. I simply do not have time to read and prep.

Ramesses wrote:

I thought your intention was to masquerade as a servant, both to see if the Samurai let something slip, but also to get into position to ambush enemies later on. Nothing bad, I was I guess just more wanting to know what your intentions where so I could better play to them.

Rravn wrote:

I completely understand and agree. Having only done both of these on the DM side, there was an exceptional amount of crossover, and I am not sure I'd actually enjoy it as a player, especially when it came to all those skill checks. That was truly just bad form on the author's part.

I know how you feel. I really do. I play divine casters often, and Paizo really has a terrible issue with long term buffs. But, I can honestly say I was not sure just how long combat's would take. I've seen it run from 1-2 rounds for "hard" fights, to a lot of swingin' and a missin' into round 7 and 8.

Rravn wrote:

Perhaps, and I'm sorry you feel that way, (I've been there, so I get it), but that is something that sometimes happens in PFS, where the idea is you never know what you will encounter or what party make-up you might have. I'm playing in another game right now where my main concept is party buffs with Blessings of Fervor and similar spells, and playing with an Oracle that does the same exact thing. It really feels a lot like we are competing just to play our characters, as our spells just don't stack.

Hopefully, your next game will be much better suited, as I think the character has a lot of potential, an I love some of the flavor you had with him.

PFS 1 - 22 Fortune's Blight (5-9) <or PFS #50> could be a possibility.

PFS 1 - 10 No Plunder, No Pay (7-11) <or PFS #38>.

Looking through, aiming at simplicity and lite maps, these look like the best options.

I'm already playing in four scenarios (this one included) and running two other games. I should try to clean the plate before starting new ones. :)

Edit: Personal opinion about those two scenarios (GM'd both): No Plunder, No Pay is mediocre, and the maps make absolutely no sense whatsoever. Fortune's Blight, however, is one of my favorites from Season 1.
