DM Barcas - Kingmaker: Rivers Run Red

Game Master Isaac Duplechain

As Newhaven rises, threats besiege it from all directions. To the north, the news of the last heir of House Rogarvia threatens the start of a new war. To the south, an empire of trolls and monsters grows.

Hey how about for the watchtowers, we have them concealed in trees, with some system of signal arrows in place, different kinds of arrows for different situations?

And c'mon Zander, if Ben Grimm can find love surely Zander can? There must be at least One blind sculptress in town, no??

Male Human Cleric (Abadar) 7th / Fighter 1st / AC 24/10T/24F / HP 61 / F +10 R +3 W +11 / Init. +0 / Perc. +5 / Sense Motive +14

Verik’s progression for the rest of 4709 and into 4710 is very much in line with what you are putting forward there. He’s going to work publicly to fulfill his dual roles as High Cleric of Newhaven and Banker of Newhaven as best as he can, with emphasis on the repair and planned growth of Sanctuary being first, and the expansion, enlargement and staffing of the Sanctuary Bank being a close second (the first leads to the second in his mind). Third to Verik as High Cleric is the fostering of cooperation with other “reputable” faiths and formal churches – Iomedae and Erastil are the most obvious but also Torag and Pharasma (grudgingly tolerant to others not Lawful or Good). To Verik, having these bastions of faith is good for the society and adds strength and prestige…as long as Abadar stands a bit taller as a first amongst equals!

New settlements (beyond mere farmsteads) and growth of Olegsgrav are supported by Verik, along with commerce opportunities such as the gold mine and then expansion of resources south on the Tuskwater shores. When applicable he wants to get a presence on Candlemere Island and control of the Gurdin River ford.

Once Olegsgrav is of suitable size to take on its own congregation to Abadar, Verik will put up Thomas Quiss as the lead, eventually grooming him to become the Banker there long-term. Thomas has ambition, but he trusts Thomas with his Absalom background, and thinks he has done well with the Sanctuary Bank to deserve it.

Verik continues to foster and develop Anya for public duties of the church beyond the library, though she may never be 'out of her shell' enough to take over leading congregations. He has high hopes for her. Meanwhile, he has to acquire (or train) a suitable new Clerk with some age and experience, as most of his flock are very young in age.

Verik no longer objects to the growth of the military despite its costs, after everything that has happened in the south and east, plus instability in the north. He will always argue for commerce and trade first in principle, but knows they live in a hostile land, and have to pay to safeguard their freedom.

One thing Verik wants out of, however, is his third “role” of being the High Magistrate, beholden to the Council during trials. Other than very rare situations, he demands for the Council to staff a small group of magistrates and counsels that can conduct the realm’s trials and legal matters justly. He wants to set policy and make more laws for the betterment of Newhaven, and pushes hard that except in matters of treason or mass-murder, the Council should leave judgment in trials to those that are trained to it – naturally he would be perfectly willing to have his office “certify” magistrates and counsels to achieve this aim!

In short, he doesn’t trust the Council to handle judgments and interpretations of law, and won’t be an enabler of those shortcomings.

Publicly, Verik will take active interest in the fostering, upkeep and tutelage of Newhaven orphans in Tandlara’s absence, securing food/shelter/schooling from the treasury.

Verik supports a détente with Archbanker Vinodragov in his dealings – that’s just good for trade and relations. As long as Verik doesn’t think the Archbanker is trying to send his agents in to cause trouble in the realm, his position on the Archbanker will relax. Plus, Verik doesn’t want to be the petty one!

Verik's relationship with Jvod Kavken is at arm's length - he felt true friendship at times since the Battle of Stagfall, but then at pivotal moments the Erastil priest just seems to start up his usual tirades against Verik/Abadar to dig at him. The last time it happened at the Council during the denunciation of Nikolai, Verik had enough of it and determined to put distance with Jhod. In many ways, Verik's arguments with Jhod were many but lately have cut too deep with him, and he's just not willing to try and show compromised tolerance if it is not returned. Naturally, Verik thinks he is the one that has done all the tolerating and compromising, with Jhod not doing any of it or wanting to, which is not the reality.

Verik’s Private Endeavors:

Verik has become more hardened and militant in his outlook since the Thrune incident and the dragon attack. He will continue to seek out Berrin’s training grounds to offer “prayers and guidance” while really learning the weapons and tactics of a warrior, as painful and embarrassing at times as that will be. Over time he has new custom full plate armor made for him, and adopts both the warhammer and hand axe over his cruder weapons of mace and sickle.

Privately, he works to include and bring Taisper into Newhaven society as much as he can, in hopes of tying his cousin to civilization and keeping him from going off the deep edge. That would include being active in some of Taisper’s morning exercise regimens each week, going out of his way to approve in the Taisper-Ilyana relationship, and also being a doting “uncle” to Nikolas Jr.

He tries to continue to enlist the orphan’s assistance as an avenue of information gathering as Tandlara did, using funds directly from the Bank.

As far as he dares, he tries to push the boundaries of law outside civilized areas to create space for bounty hunters sanctioned by Abadar to hunt down enemies and outlaws of civilization. This could put him in conflict with the Warders and he knows it. He doesn’t really want to endorse bounty hunters to hunt down fugitives for money, but is trying to figure out a semi-legal way to justify the Inquisitorial faction for Taisper.

The rundown of the women in Verik’s life – really he’s in the same boat as Zander as far as he is concerned, though one day he hopes to meet the right woman, fall in love and marry (marriage and family after all is seen as a proper hallmark of civilization). Verik’s notion of the “proper woman” has changed quite a bit since he came up the Sellen River and was changed by the Stolen Lands.

The Women in Verik’s Life:

Jemini Lebeda: Verik’s year-long unrequited love for Jemini will never fully go away, but will gracefully dull over these months. Love for Jemini almost works better for him as something pure, noble and unattainable when she was departed. Also, part of him finds some sort of tragic virtue in the unrequited part.

Aylene Varn: As vulgar and mocking of his sensibilities as she was, there was something he found special and intriguing about her. He can’t quite explain it. This is not about love with Verik, but she’ll be one of the only people (aside from the PC’s) that can mess with Verik that he will tolerate. He is one who believes that Berrin and Aylene could be a great match if they don’t bring down the castle first with arguments. He will be willing to listen to her if she needs it, and tries to help with “marriage counseling” with Aylene and/or Berrin if they ever come to him.

Anya Amitel: He knows she is infatuated with him, but he sees it as misguided affection for a girl that has been victimized by males in her life. The last thing he would do is to engage in an improper relationship. So he will gently try to nudge her towards confidence in her duties and in social situations. Maybe one day (he hopes) she will meet a boy/man who will treat her tremendously well as she deserves. Maybe he can help make that happen even!

Ilyana Flaxton: Clearly not a romantic interest, but referenced here because Verik sees her love and devotion to Taisper as potentially pivotal to ground his cousin in the world, so he will go out of his way to assist her if it helps his cousin. That means being an "uncle" to the "boy" Nikolas Jr., much as he is pretty bad at dealing with little children. He sees her as simple, kind and good, with much hardship in her life, but maybe a way someone could get at his cousin, so he will keep careful watch on her actions (for her sake and Taisper’s).

Tandlara: Again not romantic, but he misses Tandlara’s counsel and her way to see things that he can’t understand. Out of guilt that he cannot heal her from her coma, he seeks to do right by her orphans, which seemed to be the only thing that brought her smiles after the Battle of Stagfall.

What Does Verik Want in a Woman? A bold Justicar that embodies the pure virtues of Abadar and can enforce them at the point of a golden crossbow? A noted noblewoman with grace, class and knowledge of the value of commerce and society? A learned scholar who loves lore and seeks to understand the world? All of the above? Verik is not sure anymore, and so buries himself in his work and in being misunderstood in the arena of love. Once, before his travels, he would have wished nothing more than a solid, dependable, stout, devout woman of good repute that had a keen mind for books and logic. That now though, seems too safe and sedentary for him, far too uninspiring when death and strife are just a day’s ride from his doorstep. Even the requirement of being Abadarian is no longer a necessity in these parts, though he doesn't know what beliefs would be compatible to him.

Kingdom Building; Berrin will want to claim the mine then the watchtower and then build up along the lake and around Sanctuary. He wants more units in the army, notably a cavalry unit, archery unit and a ranger unit and yes, I want watchtowers someways south of Sanctuary, east towards Varnhold and west of Olegsgrav.

Hell fully support Zander in raising watchtowers along the borders and recruiting into the rangers (so as they'll actually count as a unit in battle), he'll want the rangers continually roaming the borders and the cavalry patrolling the roads and nearby farmsteads.

City; Berrin's focus will be docks, army, residential and then commerce. In that order. We'll need revenue to afford security to grow population to make more revenue for more security is my train of thought.

Berrin will also support the founding of other towns under Newhaven's banner.

If you're willing, I'd like to roleplay whatever big changes you want to test Nikolai with. Nikolai is a study in gradual change and I feel if I don't get to mature him, downtime will result in either my not really changing him over time, or sudden changes that feel out of character. I don't want to lose the chance to move him forward as a statesman, but I sure don't want that transition to be fast.

Using Craft Arms and Armor, is it possible for Nikolai's big blade to be given the "furious" quality? I reason that would use about 5k of the 6100 I am low on gear. The other 1000 can just be spent making my chain shirt +2, or on a vest of resistance +1 and I'll be happy. Also...hoping to get a little fire resistance our of those dragon scales.

As before, I'm perfectly happy to let the mechanical development of the kingdom (the term "kingdom" will have to serve) rest in the capable hands of others. Here I'll outline Jemini's planned activities for the year or two:

1. Nation formation: Jemini is outspoken and passionate about the power of education and commerce in creating a stable and peaceful nation. Such a peace only works though if the commerce is not self-centric, but extends across borders - the shared benefits of prosperity being the general garantee for maintaining peaceful relations. To this end she also leverages her family, benefiting from the extensive mercantile knowledge of location and relation that have the combined benefits of not only securing mutually beneficial contracts - but also a swiftness of negotiations that isn't readily available normally.

2. Religion: Jemini emphasizes her three faiths. She encourages Akiros' plans for a church to Iomedae, occasionally falling into long discourse with him on the nature of the warrior goddess. On occasion the discussion leads to increasing the presence of paladins - and although Jemini would love to see an order form, it is in many ways a luxury too expensive right now. When Verik shows even a sign of a divine cosmopolitan, she argues for the inclusion of Sarenrae in the affairs of Sanctuary - if nothing else, she insists on the presence of a devout priest of Sarenrae for the purpose of schooling; speaking from her own experience she argues that the foreign thoughts and influences can only benefit the future of the children. Finally, she goes to some length to have a monastery to Irori raised. Not within or near the city - instead a place a bit further afield, perhaps a days brisk march, that has no immediate benefit to the land, but can serve as a secluded place of contemplation and beauty - and perhaps if need be a defensible place too. She secretly hopes that in a few years the monastery might provide a few disciplined monks as specialist forces to complement those of the nation: both paladins and monks are rare and take extensive time and effort to train, but where a paladin's development generally is an expensive affair - the ascetic nature of monks may make progress slow, but also very cheap.

3. Dr Atago: This is one of Jemini's most immediate concerns after the battle. After ensuring that Verik can arrest decay with gentle repose, Jemini writes to and begs her parents for a loan to reward the man who saved her life. Although her tutelage made her familiar with tengu, this was indeed her first encounter with one - and she's worried that the physiology so alien to these lands somehow doesn't respond to the magic here. I don't know how you want to handle this, nor what your plans for Dr Atago are (in my head, he may make a suitable lead for the monastery to Irori). I've got no idea how to mechanically approach the raise dead; and since I don't want to set precedent for free revivals, I figure a loan from her parents is one way to cover it.

4. Everybody else: Jemini's exceedingly excited that Ellana is staying on a while longer (though she's careful to evade any topics that would see her (Jemini) wed off to anyone). Jemini is not worried that Ellana may get bored in the relatively provincial backwater - instead the constant growth and influx to the kingdom creates ever new opportunities: just one Lebeda girl is not enough, and Ellana too would have correspondence with their parents that would see the Lebeda holdings secured and expanded. Jemini sees her position very much as the face of the kingdom, rather than the wisdom, so instead of devising and formulating extensively (a process that she's irrevocably part of as well) she makes sure to be a visible presence in the kingdom, appearing frequently and everywhere. She's approachable and enjoys getting into the thick of it - be it sweating along with the militia in the training yard, lecturing at schools, getting her hands dirty when discussing the nature of the loam with farmers; "off time" essentially gives her a chance to catch-up with the kingdom. As such, she goes out of her way to see Svetlana whenever possible - holding her as a friend and confident who she sees a little bit as the caring mother of the nation. Jemini is overjoyed at her parents' arrival; she values her family and the bonds between them are thick and strong, though - as with any movement by the noble houses - there's always the additional incentive. The Lebedas are a noble house of merchants - and at the top the most valuable commodity to trade in is knowledge: Jemini's mother makes sure to instruct her daughters with the extensive accumulated financial reports of the last year that cover Brevoy and beyond; knowing what transpired on the markets and what wares will be moving is an invaluable aid in determining the future.

Come to think of it I think I'll put an adamantium full plate on the top of Berrin's wish list.

Male Human Cleric (Abadar) 7th / Fighter 1st / AC 24/10T/24F / HP 61 / F +10 R +3 W +11 / Init. +0 / Perc. +5 / Sense Motive +14

Drat drat I forgot about Doctor Atago in my post above, so yeah Verik will appreciate this debt that Jemini feels, and make a point to Gentle Repose every fifth day from the day following the battle (we need a good name for this battle too).

To Steven's post above, I wholeheartedly understand and agree with his need to feel the progression of Nikolai throughout the mini-interlude of the 4709-10 timeframe. A focus there wouldn't preclude the rest of us from running some sideline posts that could be developmental and fun to write with each other either.

Agreed with Sigz and his take on general parameters for Kingmaker progression - my take on it after looking at where we left off in the mini-game is in the spoiler below.

Thoughts on Newhaven Growth in 4709-10 with Kingmaker:
When we last left off in Desnus moving into Sarenith (June 24th, OOC Discussion pg. 10), we spent a lot of the treasury (5BP left after Desnus) on claiming and founding Olegsgrav, building housing there, adding City Guard quarters and Noble Villa to Sanctuary, and adding a lumbercamp in the hex nearby. Economy score was good (29) but Stability (22) was starting to become an issue with the Control DC (DC27). Consumption was okay (at 2) but with only five months until Winter hits and that becomes a problem again.

* Sarenith and Erastus should focus solely on saving BP and getting those two hexes C13 and D14 to get that Gold Mine built (that mine ain't cheap to build either at 8BP). Hopefully that really sets our Economy up even more.

* Arodus, Rova and Lamashan are the last months before Winter, and if 1-3 hexes are claimed here it should be for Tuskwater lakeshore and river hexes east and south of Sanctuary. Consider Hexes H15, H13, G12, J15, K16, or K15 as options. Build either cheap farms (2BP) to keep Consumption to 0, or slightly more expensive fisheries (4BP) for Consumption AND Economy. Consumption is a priority to secure before Winter, or else the Treasury will get wiped out.

Another option is to claim a hill hex to setup a Signal Tower (4BP in hills) to reduce surprise attacks (and increase Stability) - J14, F13, G11 are options.

* Neth, Kuthona, Abadius, Calistril are the winter months, and with 1/2 Consumption benefits our treasury will be hard hit. NO growth on hexes, and where possible throw in a building to increase Stability (Library, Town Commons, Watchtower) or setup a required military building - a Tannery in Olegsgrav or Stables in Sanctuary allows us to build a Calvary force. A Fletcher enables us to build an Archery force. Maybe build up another force here. Can't do it all though.

* Pharast is the proposed new month, and Consumption benefits are back to normal. Maybe that's time to grab a hex for a Signal Tower or address something else lacking - maybe another army force.

Final Thoughts - DON'T BUILD a City Wall - that's a waste of 12BP with no benefit to Economy or Stability. Dragons fly over walls. Trolls smash down walls. The price of a wall gives us a military building necessary to raise a different force type (cavalry, archers, etc.). That's why we have a Castle, so we don't have walls. If Barcas wants to allow us a Palisade for 2BP then sure, but otherwise let's spend the BP's on something better.

Final final Thoughts - By Desnus we had a single CR1 "Recruit" Medium-sized Light Infantry army. With the victory I think it gets some XP to become "Trained" and take on a tactic (woot!). We want more forces, but note they add to Consumption BP, so keeping Consumption down overall is key for us (read: irrigated farms). We need the right military buildings (10BP each) to raise the right troops and/or to increase the size of the force.

Drat too many things to consider for a year's time - just putting this down to anchor my mind on what Verik "would" be doing behind the posted scenes.

Other things Verik will put thought/time/effort to in this next year that are not posted above:

* Verik does what he can to upgrade his "crafting" study in Sanctuary Castle (that doesn't need to be at the Bank by any means), spending time there and securing reliable vendors for reagents/components/ingredients for his craft. With some leeway between he and Vinodragov, he hopes to secure some new dweomercrafting sources of information out of New Stetven and Silverhall.

* Verik will "share" all that he knows in a detailed report to both Vinodragov and Absalom about Candlemere Island and the ancient cyclops ruins of Koloran there, asking in return for information that may bring more meaning to it - particularly any dwarven information that know of Tar Taargadth and the fall of the cyclops empire. Not that he wants a troop of Pathfinders in their backyard, but concludes withholding information is the worse choice.

* Verik will put forth a full report to the Archbankers of Absalom of recent developments, seeking to prove a justification to expand his mission there with volunteers, information and goods. A private request is to pay for a good cache of Inner Sea wines to be brought, some of which he will use as special gifts to a select few. Any tidbits of dweomercrafting knowledge he can get from Absalom would be sought after, though Verik knows a trip down and back up the Sellen takes the better part of six months.

* Verik hasn't forgotten Jabber, and checks in to see how he and his fellows are getting along, including if they can be of more use to society. It will be awhile for Verik, but he starts trying to pick up some Draconic from Jabber, and in turn tries to teach him about "proper" society and trade...which most likely ends up in bouts of confusion and frustration.

5. The forgotten: Jemini's routine also takes her passed the small sanctuary that harbors those who suffered at the hands of harpies.

I like where this is going between Nikolai and Akiros. This conversation has been a long time coming. I'm going to wait and see where it goes before moving on.

Wow. So. Much. Stuff.

And oh ya, those persnikity Kingdom rules. Forgot about those. Thanks for being so up on them and detailed Vorduvai.

My 2cp:
-If we can only afford one army upgrade, definitely archers before calvary.
-Would it be possible to also raise/train a militia? Or see that every citizen at least gets some weapons training? Very effective tactic smaller nations can instill to help bolster their fighting force. I assume Akiros would be in charge of that? I have no idea how that fits in with the rules.

(more likely to come)

Excellent posts gentlemen - a really fine add to the story there with those two. What really struck me is that you get to see all the conflict and turmoil in Nikolai internally, but at the end he gives only the briefest answer to his old lieutenant. Similarly, I really liked how Akiros wanted to press for more in his own thoughts, but had the wisdom to know not to push too far. Great stuff.

Male Human Cleric (Abadar) 7th / Fighter 1st / AC 24/10T/24F / HP 61 / F +10 R +3 W +11 / Init. +0 / Perc. +5 / Sense Motive +14

Hey let’s make up a battle name!

Verik’s Attempt:
Naturally, Verik would make up something overly wordy and cumbersome in an attempt to be both detailed and precise in his records and reports. He’ll try to set the public recording of these momentous events of the 15th of Sarenith with the title “The Tripartite Battle of the Eastern Sanctuary Plains, Stand at Sanctuary Square and Charge at the Outskirts: A Varnhold-Newhaven Alliance Versus the Iobarian Dragon Horde”. Certainly he even thinks it has a little panache to it!

What Really Is Used:
Of course, Verik will get overruled and ignored (as usual), as the Brevians and Newhaveners opt for something actually usable in tales and song! As time goes on, no one really wants to remember the Varnholders being beaten in the initial attack, or the pain and loss of the dragons savaging townspeople in the square. The rally by Jemini and her decapitation of the red dragon in the last part of the battle is what is retold most often in taverns and on trails. So the battle name quickly becomes ”Battle of Dragon’s Head Charge” … or just ”The Dragonshead” by those that were there and understand the reference.

How about that?

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2013 Top 32

I like the idea of naming the battle. And Dragonhead is great.

Yes you do, and you have it :)

Okay - so I've decided that we are going to make a stop in the winter of 4709-4710. (Hopefully it will only take a few weeks in real time.)

Berrin, Aylene, and Jemini will head to New Stetven to petition Noleski Surtova to allow Berrin to start a new noble house - House Myrdal - under the banners of House Lebeda. They also need permission of House Orlovsky, of which House Varn is a bannerman, for the marriage. Both Lords Orlovsky and Lebeda will be there to hear the petition as well, as they are the ones who will have to say yea/nay for their particular Houses. (Zander may also wish to go to look at his father in the eye. Fake-Zander will be going. If not, I can find a separate storyline.)

Akiros will be made aware of a strange piece of magical technology in the hands of a potential spy while the above are gone. Verik can help him with the investigation, but he will be busy dealing with a new representative of the Pathfinder Society - who may just be able to help as well.

Nikolai will be approached by Elanna Lebeda to discuss a potential marriage alliance.

Suggestions are, as always, appreciated.

Once we explore these, we can jump over to the main story arc of this book - those damn trolls.

Male Human Fighter (Archer) 6

The Warden will attend the delegation with 'Other Zander'. He has dropped the 'Fake' moniker in his mind, for OZ performed well on the wall. Knowing they both are where they are because of 'their' father, he looks forward to the confrontation. Although he was not always proud of how he did it, he has accomplished much, and that his father can not strip from him.

Zander would even invite OZ on a bounding trip to the frontier with his wardens if he can be spared from wooing Jemini, and more importantly be allowed out of his minder's sight.

Otherwise Zander is likely to spend some time looking for the old hermit and demand some wisdom from him.

Male Human Fighter (Archer) 6

Oh and I hinted at it in the post where Zander jogs off, but as a player and character, WE are confused by the equipment appearing during the battle. If this was a DM handwave and a behind the scenes mechanic to slowly ramp us up in the fight, I am cool with that. But if his quiver magically filled and his armor popped into existence on him, he is a bit weirded out by that and would wonder if others experienced something similar or if it was just him. He has a limited frame of reference since he was up on the wall and not with any of the other Founders.

It was a magical spell by Vinodragov for Abadar to give them their arms. It was also a way to ensure that you didn't have to fight a handful of CR 10 dragons without arms or armor.

Zander 2.0 is an interesting cat. His real backstory is an interesting thing that we will hopefully get to explore. He is just as exploited and damaged by Poul Orlovsky as Zander 1.0 was after his abandonment. I look forward to a confrontation with Poul and Zander 1.0 - maybe with 2.0 looking on. Dramatic times up ahead.

Verik would just like to point out the following:

Abadar: Magically returns your critical equipment to you in the pivotal battle to save civilization...

Gozreh: Makes a fun log-boat out of a tree sapling or acorn or whatever...

Abadar: 1 Gozreh: 0

Abadar > Gozreh

That is all.

;P

But Zander wanted to ride a logboat down the castle steps while shooting his bow....what's that?...it's been done?....nevermind.

Verik's profile is updated with his new armor, weapons and crafted items (headband, wand) for the winter, including gear value. Assumption is that he's had a Brevic armorsmith fit him for full plate that incorporated his Absalom-enchanted breastplate.

I still have Berrin's cloak, Akiros' belt and cloak as items Verik would craft before the winter, assuming you have the coin and/or WBL differential to cover costs. If you're good to go on those, say the word and I'll move them to my 'completed' section.

With six months' time passing to winter, I figure that's the time to have something crafted if you have something in mind.

Berrin stands at 18,504 gp 5 sp and 1 cp with mundane and magical equipment plus loose currency. He has the gold for a cloak of resistance +1.

I adjusted the 'General's Cloak' downward to just the Resistance +1 part for 500+cloak cost, unless you wanted to keep the Endure Elements part for that extra 500gp. Fluff is cool but not sure if you want that right now for x2 the cost.

Either way it's a 1-2 day crafting time, so he's easily got that on his shoulders well before winter.

I am updating the NPC list, which is in the campaign tab. Tell me if I am missing anyone that needs to be added, so that I don't have to dig through thousands of posts.

As I look through the story updating things, I notice that Taisper's first Diplomacy roll to influence Ilyana Flaxton was a 30. Looks like it worked, seeing as it will soon be revealed in-game that he has married her.

Okay, I added a hyperlinked timeline of the actions in the threads, to make looking things up easier.

I am trying to think of a story for Nikolai. Any suggestions?

The timeline is very impressive! Both in the descriptions and in the work to link all of that up.

Well with Nikolai, perhaps it's an opportunity to head somewhere in the wilderness (not too far away) that he remembers when he was Stag Lord. Maybe something that highlights some of the mystery of these lands? Sounds far better than him trying to deal with the folks in town :)

I have a few cogs spinning in his future storylines but I am not sure I want to use them yet.

I had a slow day at work, bough I will most likely get called out to something tonight.

So, having done the rolls for the kingdom, you end up in good shape after the winter. (Some poor rolls put unrest up to 4 late in the winter, but it is back to 0 in the first month of the spring. Consumption is at 0, with 27 BP to mess with. I built a market and an inn in Olegsgrav and a pier in Sanctuary. Your Economy is really humming at +43 (meaning a minimum 9 BP/turn if you don't roll a 1 - which you did in one of the winter months, setting up insufficient BP to pay the winter consumption of 8, which is what raised the unrest), but your stability is low (+25) and your loyalty is almost nonexistent (+15). This is all with a DC of 32 because you have 12 hexes. (You can also shift the Spymaster bonus to get +39 Economy and +29 Stability, which might help that ratio. You should probably get a new Spymaster. I am handwaving that Verik is doing an okay job with her existing resources.)

I haven't done the map yet, but I expanded and grabbed the mine, plus some farmland to the north of Sanctuary and a fishery to the south.

At this point, you are in a good spot to expand rapidly at 2 hexes per turn and set yourself up for next winter. In just 5 months, if you focus on higher stability, you can get up to 21 hexes. The DC would increase by 9, but you would move the Economy coefficient from 5 to 4 - even if you didn't increase your Economy in that period, you would go from 8-12 BP/turn to 11-15 BP/turn. (21 hexes will also allow you to add Jemini's bonus to a second score.)

I didn't add any armies because of their higher consumption and relatively lean cash reserves in the winter months. You also lack the infrastructure for more in either Sanctuary or Olegsgrav, but you can start building some of the appropriate buildings for some of the units.

I figured out what I am going to do with Nikolai. Might take some time to type up, depending on what I get tonight or tomorrow.

BI still have to respond to the marriage proposal, and Nikolai will spend his time learning to deal with political rivals so he's not seen as mere barbarian. It seems to me that attempts to prevent Nikolai from pursuing his throne become a self-fulfilling prophecy. He only thinks about it because rivals sent an assassin, or because he perceives that nobles laugh at him in their courts.

He hasn't gotten the proposal yet. I know what he will be doing, but I haven't had time to type it up yet.

Thanks, guys!!

Only an hour until the Top 16 are revealed. I'm fairly confident that Steven is going to make it, and I'm pretty excited about the monster he has created for the next round.

Male Human Fighter (Archer) 6

Voted as well. Good luck on the 16. Definitely top tier material.

Silver Crusade

Male Human 8th Lvl Expert

Ding ding ding! Results are in! Congrats there Steven!

Congrats Steven! Rocking the show!

I updated the campaign info sheet. I also wrote everyone's ages down in the Leadership section. If I got anyone's wrong, let me know and I will fix it. I also updated the maps (as of 03/4710) of Newhaven, Sanctuary, and Olegsgrav.

Thanks, guys! Monster round is up next, and I hope everyone likes it. It is totally out of my normal demesne, but then so is anything CR 2-5!

1. Verik's Birthday looks good, and it just so happens that I had put his birthday as 16th Neth, so 10 days until he's 25 (woot)!

2. The map of Newhaven is looking NICE - adding those hexes NW and SE of Sanctuary is starting to make it look more like a real realm there. I am counting 11 hexes though on your map and not 12, so just wanted to confirm that (maybe it's the Stagfall hex missing).

3. YOU asked for it (no you didn't but I was on a mission)! They're WACKY (well not really), they're ZANY (maybe one sorta is but not the rest), they're the NEW ABADARIAN NPC's on Verik's Profile! Check out the new arrivals of 4709 and updates on the rest of the crew! NOW with new descriptions of Abadarian ranks and a full description of the Bank of Sanctuary!

I believe Berrin is 26, 27 next Erastus 29th. I'll go post hunting to confirm it.

Nope. He's 25. 26 this Erastus.

Wow, Verik! That is a lot of details and NPCs for me to mess with. Your creativity is pretty freaking impressive.

And Verik, you are right about missing a hex (G14). I fixed it.
