As one might expect, this is a recruitment thread for the Council of Thieves AP. I typically allow around 4-6 players into my games, so that's what I'll be looking for. Exact number depends on the number of submissions, as well as how many of said submissions I believe would work together as a cohesive party. That said, I am going to try and get as many questions as possible out of the way in my first post, so hold on to your butts.

Character Creation Rules:

  • 15-point-buy, point for point. No scores above an 18 or below 8 before racial modifiers.
  • Level: We will be starting at 1st level. I do not hand out XP, I will let you know when you level up.
  • Alignment: I'd prefer no one evil. If you want to run an evil character, I will need a good reason.
  • Races: All Paizo material is allowed, but the stranger/more exotic your race, the better a backstory I'll expect from you as a result.
  • Classes: Again, all Paizo material is allowed. I will allow third party favored class options, but no classes. I'm not overly fond of psionics and I have not read through Path of War. Occult Adventures will be allowed, but once the official book is printed, all characters will have to be re-built according to those specifications.
  • Firearms: They are allowed. Enemies will have them as well. You have been warned.
  • Traits: Two traits, one must be a campaign trait. You are allowed to take a drawback for an additional trait.
  • Gold: Average gold for your class.
  • Unchained: Unchained classes are allowed. To anyone interested in playing an Unchained Rogue (or Slayer, for that matter), please PM me. I do have a small change I am making to the class. In addition, I will be using:

    --Background Skills
    --Disease/Poison Trackers
    --Removing Iterative Attacks
    --Wound Thresholds

  • House rules: I have a few house rules I always use. Others make come up in play, but these are relevant for character creation.

--Dexterity to attack and damage is free, 100%. This is for all classes, and this goes for both melee AND ranged combat. You can use Dexterity for your CMB as well.
--Endurance now works as it does in Unchained, under the Wound Threshold entry. Diehard now allows you to ignore wound penalties for a number of rounds equal to your Constitution modifier, but after this expires, you are fatigued.
--Combat Expertise is NOT required for Improved ______. I have eliminated some other feat taxes, though none of them SHOULD come up in character creation. If I spot any perusing your entries, I will let you know.

If I remember any others for character creation, I WILL post into this thread. If a submitted character is using something modified by one of my rules, I will ALSO shoot you a PM. If you have played with me before, feel free to remind me of any I may be forgetting.
    [/list]

  • Player Expectations:

    • I ask that you be able to commit enough time to the game to post at least once a day. When I'm not working, I will likely post as frequently as possible. When I do work, I'll probably only post once a day, and occasionally I'll miss a day. If you'll be unable to post for more than a day or two at a time, I request you let me know ahead of time.
    • If you don't post for a week without an explanation, or have frequent absences lasting several days, I reserve the right to remove you from the game.
    • Please, don't be a jerk.
    • I use a few house rules, but otherwise run rules as written. If you think there's a mistake, let me know. I will do the same for you. I will be as fair as possible, so please don't try to cheat.
    • Read the Council of Thieves Player's Guide, and have at least a passable knowledge of Golarion.
    • Please be a decent writer and have a commitment to role-playing.
    • Roll20 will be used for combat maps, so please make an account if accepted.
    • I will roll initiative for all players during encounters. In addition, I will try to let you know whenever a skill check could be beneficial for you. If you, in character, would not think to roll a skill check (such as entering an area where you expect no resistance, so no Perception), I will use your passive skill check (Bonus +10) against their rolls and inform you if your character notices anything.

    Completed submissions WILL include:

  • A completed stat block, with all relevant information on it. If I spot entries with missing information, I will inform you of it. If submissions have been closed and I inform you, you will have 24 hours until I consider your submission void.
  • A completed backstory, along with a physical description and an outline of your character's personality.
  • At your own discretion, feel free to also submit a small snippet of your writing/roleplaying in character. This is NOT required, and I will NOT hold it against you if this is not done. That said, if you want to showcase just how good at it your are, the option is there.
  • Submissions will be open for at least a week. My schedule for work is posted through next Wednesday. My schedule will likely be posted by tomorrow/Sunday, so I will have a definite end date then. I'll be ending it before my next day off, so I'll have a day to peruse all your entries. This will give you at least a week, though, so no rush.

Sorry for the length, but I tried to address as many common questions as I could. Have at it, guys!

Sweet! Quick turnaround Jon. Now I actually have to consider what I am going to play.

Dotting while at work. will take a day or so to think of something.

Definitely interested. I am making a bard (Chelish diva).

So does this mean that bows, crossbows, firearms and thrown weapons all get Dex to damage?

Dotting at work, will see what strikes my fancy. I've been thinking about a monk - looking at the unchained monk on the SRD, it looks like a much smoother class than originally written, so I may see about something like that once I get home and read the player's guide.

I'm interested in writing up a half-elven magus with a heritage in Cheliax's opera scene. I'll get something up soon.

That is correct. If you are using a bow, crossbow, or a thrown weapon, you can use the higher of your Strength or Dexterity for damage. Firearms can only add Dexterity, for the obvious reasons.

Perfect game for my Steel Hound Investigator then! I'll read up on the Player's Guide and post him if he fits :)

BACKGROUND SKILLS - For those who do not have the Unchained book, background skills allow players to focus on adventuring skills without sacrificing their character concepts. You gain 2 ranks per level to spend in background skills in addition to your normal ranks.

    Pathfinder Unchained wrote:
Appraise, Craft, Handle Animal, Linguistics, Perform, Profession, and some Knowledge specialties are all background skills. This system also adds two new background skills: Artistry and Lore. A counterpart to Craft and Perform, Artistry is about developing a creative work that isn’t necessarily an object or a discrete performance. This skill can be used to write plays, musical compositions, poems, and all sorts of other works. Lore, on the other hand, functions like an especially specific Knowledge skill. A character might know Lore (elven history) without being trained more generally in Knowledge (history), or could be well versed in Lore (artistic masterpieces) without having ranks in Appraise, Artistry, or Craft.

You can find more about it in Pathfinder Unchained.

Does this mean enemies will have them if PCs use them or does it mean enemies will have them period?

Enemies will have them regardless. Not en masse, mind you, but powerful, dangerous people have a way of acquiring powerful, dangerous weaponry. Really though, more of them will likely show up the more people use them, for loot if nothing else.

Doomed Hero here with my submission.

Cillian is modeled a bit off of a young Bruce Wayne before getting angry enough to start dressing like a bat.

He's a streetwise noble caught between two worlds, who finally decides that both sides of the Law are to blame for the terrible things that have happened to the city. His backstory gives a full run down of his outlook on the world (and a glimpse into my own writing skills).

He's a Swashbuckler that will be headed toward the Shadowdancer prestige class. For now he's just a dex-based frontliner. As he goes up in level he'll become more and more like a fantasy-Batman. Super stealthy, a terror in combat with tons of gadgets and tricks up his sleeves.

Please let me know if there's anything you'd like me to change to suit your vision of the game.

Congrats on being my first submission! Most of it looks good, but you will have to change your feats. Well, I suppose you don't have to, but it might be in your best interest. One of the common staples of my house rules is that EVERYONE gets Dexterity to damage, for free! No need for Slashing Grace, although I suppose you do get Swashbuckler's Finesse for free... provided you make it into the game, I'll come up with something suitable to replace it.

Hey Jon I sent you a PM asking to clarify a few things largely around the Dex to damage house rule you have.

As well as that though I'm struggling to know what concept to submit! At the moment I have a Slayer and Bard that are my most likely.

    Grand Lodge

    Lokiel here for character submission.

Darric is a scrapper. A tooth and nail kind of guy that isn't afraid to dirty his hands if he believes he's in the right for doing it.

He's a brawler with aims on becoming a dragon disciple to prove that in the hands of the right person, power can be used wisely.

I can provide anything else that i've missed if requested.

I don't know if this matters to you, but this will not be a PFS campaign. Your ability scores are too low (You seem to be missing your racial bonus), and I will need your ENTIRE sheet on your profile. Also need a physical description and a personality profile.

If you're not sure what I'm looking for, feel free to look through my own characters I have up on the site. Anything PF I've submitted would be an acceptable submission for this campaign.

Oh, i'm still getting used to how these forums work and i'll get an alias page up for you to look at in a couple minutes.

Daniel R. Peterson is in the works. He's a steel hound investigator who's rather distrait, which I've emulated with the Oblivious drawback. I'm not quite certain of his third trait yet, but for now I've given him Black Powder Fortune. I'm working under the assumption that the archetype replaces Poison Lore rather than the non-existent Poison Use.

I'm not quite there yet in the background and personality profile, but I can summarize before I finish: Daniel is a Liberal Socialist who wants to bring guns to the people – At a minor profit, of course. However, his business concept met an unexpected amount of resistance in his homeland, Ustalav, so he has recently moved to the homeland of his now deceased parents: Cheliax. Strangely, he feels a sort of nostalgic connection to the country, even as all he ever knew of it was the stories his parents told him.
He's a graduate of the University of Lepidstadt, Ustalav, where he studied mainly alchemy and engineering, but also a bunch of other subjects.

I suggest giving CampinCarl's Character Creation guide for Pathfinder PbP a look. It's a great resource, especially if you're new to the forums, as it gives you a copy-pastable template for your alias' profile.

Thanks for the information, i'll make use of it next chance I get. Also, here is my revised Darric Halstrum

As a sidenote, I must admit to loving your character so far, Runge. Investigator with a donkey! Though, isn't a rapier a 1d6 instead of a d8?

If you're after a good d8 replacement, an estoc thematically fits where a rapier could be, just need an exotic feat to use it one-handed.

    Dot

Going to work on a Bard for this one!

I have a character concept, but I haven't chosen a class for him yet. A messenger who knows his way over the rooftops of Westcrown, aided further by his trusty wayfinder. His job has led him to seeing more of the corruption of his city than he ever wished to.
Classes under consideration: Urban Barbarian, Ranger, Monk.

Changed idea, starting work on it!

Dotting in for definite interest, although I'm not entirely sure what I'll play just yet. Maybe a Slayer or Rogue.

    Dotting for interest.

    Probably a Tiefling Witch.

    Variant Tielfling ability: 1d100 ⇒ 99

Ok so I finally settled on a submission helped by the fact I think we might see some great melee characters.

So here is Lewys 'Freeman,' escaped slave and activist.

He is something of a leader, helping many of his people escape persecution in Westcrown but electing not to run with them to the safety of the mountains of the north but to stay and care for the sick and older escapees who would not have made the journey. As he has watched them fade and pass away over the years he has dreamed of something more for them and all the people of Westcrown.

At the moment I have built him slightly more combat focussed due to the Arcane Duelist archetype but could happily remove that so he becomes a very versatile and skillful character who provides useful support, spells, healing and ranged damage.

Anyway, I hope you find him interesting and any comments or oversights please let me know :)

@Isin Ghar: Sounds good. I normally would rather not have people roll on the variant Tiefling table (I just feel its relatively unbalanced), but after looking it up, that ability seems fine.

@Lewys Freeman: Concept seems solid. However, much like the first submitter, you seem to have overlooked the fact that Weapon Finesse/Agile Maneuvers have been removed as feats. Dex to attack/damage/CMB is free. Also, I'm somewhat confused as to how you would have them at all? Or are you just listing them there for your own record-keeping?

Also, you've got a typo in your AC. It's correct, but you list your Dex as +5 not +4, which leads to your provided math being incorrect. I'd appreciate it if you fixed that at some point for me.

GM, do you have any recommendations for languages to take for this campaign?

Still rolling around concepts, but one that struck me--and I have no idea if it would work for this game or not--is a heretical inquisitor of Zon-Kuthon. You know how much I love the Midnight Lord, and I'd obviously make the character Lawful Neutral, but if the concept doesn't work for this AP I'm sure I'll come up with half a dozen other ideas. If it does work, however, would you be up for making the spiked chain more like it was in 3.5? I don't need the whole shebang that made it obnoxious--honestly just having it be finesse-able would be enough, although the trip or disarm properties would also be nice.

EDIT: Also strongly considering something from Occult Adventures, since I just realized you're allowing that. Probably a kineticist or medium, as those seem the most interesting to me.

    Ooh, dotting!

Ah I meant to mention that. I use Herolab to build my characters and in order to make the calculations easier I granted myself weapon finesse and agile maneuvers since they Mechanically do the same thing as your house rule of dex to attack, damage and CMB. So yeah it's just for my bookkeeping.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

@Dragoncat: Not really. Regional languages could be of some use, especially with certain NPCs. Infernal is somewhat useful, given that you're in Cheliax. I don't recall if the Player's Guide has anything for players on what languages to select. Given the Council of Thieves is an urban campaign, most if not all people you need to interact with speak Common.

@Loup Blanc: The inquisitor seems interesting, although I don't know that it would be a great fit for Council of Thieves. That said, I'm sure you wouldn't cause problems, so if you're feeling like it, feel free to submit. Occult Adventures would also work nicely.

@EVERYONE: Having a bit of scheduling conflict through work at the moment, but my next definitive day off will be Friday. As per my prior posting, this would mean that recruitment will be open until 11:59 PM (UTC-5.00/EST) Thursday, June 18. If you have not dotted for interest prior to that point, your submission will not be accepted. If you have posted in with interest in the campaign, you will have 24 hours to submit your character to me before your submissions will be voided. I will try to have my list of accepted characters up by that Saturday.

PS: Another thing I forgot to mention. If you're feeling particularly torn between two character concepts, I am willing to allow two submissions per person. I appreciate odd-ball and off-the-wall ideas, but if you want to make a safer bet on an entry (or vice versa) I am certainly welcoming it.

I might try to come up with an alternate version of Cillian. I'm not completely sold on his mechanics. I might do him up as a Brawler or Unchained Monk instead of a Swashbuckler. I can see any of them working for the concept I have in mind.

@GM-JZ: That's fine. I realized that about halfway through my post to you, but I wanted to make sure. Thanks for letting me know.

@Cillian Castilain: Perfectly fine. If/when you do, let me know so I can take a second look over your mechanics. If you're set on the character but not the mechanics, feel free to build more than one version and submit him as two "separate" characters.

Ah, that's what I get for waiting. Lewys managed to use about 75% of the concept I was. (I know there can be two of something, but still.) I'll see about coming up with something divine, we're a bit lacking in that department.

Sarabian, remember we can submit two characters for consideration.

Sorry for stealing your schtik though :/ it's a concept I've been trying with for a while

Maybe you two could try to synergize your similar concepts? There's probably a teamwork feat that would give you an interesting boost. A pair of Arcane Duelists working together could be pretty cool.

Synchronized backstories can make similar concepts really enjoyable.

Hmm, I am seeing good melee characters. Might possibly reconsider my character idea. I really like the idea of being a courier though, makes the character very strongly grounded in Westcrown. I could easily make a switch hitter with the free dex to damage, going Urban Barbarian or Urban Ranger.

Though now that I think about it, free dex to attack and damage also makes the idea of being an Eldritch Knight or Arcane Trickster very enticing for once.

Nevermind, question has been answered, but main reason was to dot this.

Okay, pretty sure I am actually going Urban Guide Ranger for my messenger/courier concept. He'll use a bow and a falchion. He'll take cosmopolitan and affable to have access to skills that feel suitable for a courier. Just need to know if using dex for attack and damage gives 1.5x mod on two handed weapons. Also power attack would still require 13 strength right? Hmmm.

    Dark Archive

Dotting, strongly thinking an arcane caster.

@The Pale King: Sounds good, although I'm confused by something. How are you planning to get Dexterity to attack/damage with a Falchion? It's not normally a finesse weapon, unless I'm forgetting something.

Perhaps I wasn't quite clear, which is my fault. Any weapon that can NORMALLY be used with Weapon Finesse can be used with my Dexterity to damage rules, with the addition of the scimitar and the falcata. Other weapons are still required to use strength for attack and damage. That said, two-handed weapons such as the Elven Curveblade and Elven Branched Spear do get 1.5x Dex to damage.

Okay, that makes a lot more sense, thanks. Guess I might be burning a feat on elven curve blade eventually.

After being directed to check out this thread, I will tentatively dot for interest...since we seem to be low on caster apps, was thinking an oracle of some sort.

Crunch is mostly down, background to be added.

I think I've got a concept for this that would be adorable. Lemme get it together...
