This book is well worth the price. The quality is amazing, the prints are beautiful (actually going to frame them and hang them) and the individual handouts are extremely helpful.
There is literally only 1 tiny thing that I was thrown off-guard about with this book and that is with the locking hinge with the grimoire case. There is a single piton about a centimeter long that is holding the hinge in place and if you hold the case upside down it falls into the metal casing in a way that it allows for the hinge to be removed, and if the hinge is removed and you turn the case right-side up the piton will fall out. Easy remedy, keep the book right-side up or flat on its back to let gravity do its work to keep the hinge in place.
So that is the only concern I had and wanted to put that out there for anyone who wants to purchase this fine piece of awesomeness so they are not caught off-guard as well.
I love this thing. I've had it for a while now and the only complaint I have is the star on the cover. The seven pointed star emblem on the cover of the case (not on the book inside) arrived partially scratched off and over time (maybe a few months) it has gathered a couple more scratches so I'm kind of bummed by it's lack of perfection. Everything else is wonderful!
Just got the deluxe edition as a pre-birthday gift from my players, and I have to say: It's the most awesome and unique roleplaying item I've ever had. Needless to say, I'll be using it for many forthcoming sessions, know all I need is a new haircut and color, some diamonds in my forehead and on my hands and loose a few pounds ... ;-)
If paizo ever considers doing other adventure paths in a deluxe edition/reprint (please consider it? plz) - I would suggest to stock some more AP related stuff into the box, like the Sandpoints Pawns, GameFlip mat, a printed version of the Players Guide (to the AP) etc.
When he drops it on the table video, it didnt seem that heavy to me. when i went to lift it out of the box, i almost dropped it before i got a second hand in there!
This is a serious amount of metal, and that leather is SO SMOOTH to the touch. this is not a book make to look like a leather and metal bound tome, this IS a leather and metal bound tome!
the artwork in envelopes are also vastly better quality than what the video presents. the stock they are on cant be called paper, not sure what the industry term is for it. it is extremely thick and durable and the colors just shine off it.
There's not much I can add in a review that hasn't already been said by the others, except that it looks far better in person than it does in the pictures and videos.
My only possible complaint might be that the simulated edges of "pages" on the presentation box seem a bit too white, and might have used a very light stain to a colour more like aged parchment, but that's only a very, very minor nit-pick, and the case still looks great without it.
The hardware seems to be steel, and it's fastened to the cover with screws, making the construction quite sturdy. The clasp is a perfect fit - neither too loose, nor too snug.
The apparently fake leather of the box and book looks and feels quite real, and it's very soft and comfortable to the touch. This may be the nicest cover material of any book in my small collection. The spine of the box and book are textured as if the contents were bound with a heavy cord under the leather (though I don't think that's actually the case, rather just a simulation.)
The inside of the box cover seems to be a very heavy, high-quality paper, and the box itself is lined with a nice, black cloth, with a dark red ribbon which makes lifting the contents out of the box easier. The inside dimensions of the box are just right for holding your typical RPG book, or the Pathfinder DM screen and one or more Flip Maps, for example. (As others noted, if it's not holding the special edition RotRl book, it would make a fine box to store a DM's screen, dice, paper, and other such materials in.)
The book is printed in vivid colour in high-quality detail on heavy paper. This is the first time I've seen a Pathfinder adventure path of any sort, but I would have to imagine this is much higher quality printing than the original. The artwork is quite beautiful, meeting or exceeding Paizo's usual standards, the text is crisp and easy to read, and everything seems quite well-organized and easy to follow. The adventure is quite detailed (there is, perhaps, almost too much detail: the information provided is quite dense). The binding seems quite secure and well-done - this book seems to be designed for the long-haul (I can't really say the same for any of my other game books.)
The detachable hand-outs are quite a nice touch, though perhaps not really practical for real-life gaming, as I would imagine it could be quite easy to abuse the book by removing and replacing the handouts until things get dog-eared and distressed. Indeed, I would have to say that the book is best used for display as a collector-item only, rather than used on a real-world game table.
The high-quality art prints are another nice touch and could also be used as hand-outs or visual aids, though these seem more like bonus material than an integral part of the adventure path. Each print is protected in its own high-quality translucent paper (not plastic) envelope for protection, and yes the prints do seem to be nice enough to frame if you are so inclined.
I've shelved the book on my bookshelf next to the special edition of The Other Guys' fake-leather-bound special-edition 3.5E core rulebooks; the fit right in with each other, though I'd say that Paizo's product is much nicer than the Other Guys' special edition books.
The whole package seems to me to be worth the price, and I'm sure it will hold its value quite well for the future. Paizo have gone above and beyond on this product, and they've earned 5/5 stars for it.
Announced! The main product image is a photograph of the actual outer presentation case, and the additional image at the bottom is a photograph of the actual book. We'll add additional photos as we're able to.
Is this a special but similar copy to the compilation coming out here in the next couple weeks? Wanting to gauge similarities/differences.
This version is printed on thicker paper, has handouts tucked in slits inside the pages, has the foil-embossed imitation leather cover, the ribbon bookmark, the art prints, the *awesome* presentation case... but the editorial content of the book itself is *exactly* the same.
UGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I have to gift my preordered ROTRL edition, and then buy this..................... I hate you all!!!!
*Places preorder*
P.S.
I didn't really mean it... I don't really hate you. Well, maybe a bit, but I continue to love you for making cool stuff more then I hate you for making me buy it.
Ummm....it says limited edition, what's your definition of limited? I'm not going to have to avoid work so I can sit 24 hours in front of my screen, refreshing until I can hit the preorder button, will I? Cause I REALLY want this so bad!

You can order it right now and not sit in front of your computer.

You should see a preorder button right now.
(We don't release edition sizes, but it's pretty darn limited.)

Not at all, I don't know why you would.
This is actually very common for RPG companies, until now Paizo was one of the few companies that did not make Limited Edition books.
I am excited to get my 'regular' edition. Now all of a sudden a newer MORE SPECIAL edition gets announced? Eh...
We really wanted to tell folks about this sooner—heck, we wanted to *release it* sooner—but working out the metal casings took a lot of time; because that's one of the most expensive parts of the package, we couldn't set a price until that was finalized.

Understandable I guess. Unfortunately I can't drink the kool-aid this time. All my major RPG budget for a long time has gone to the Rappan Athuk kickstarter, my purchase of Slumbering Tsar, and my regular Paizo subscriptions. Not to mention I'll already have all the material in this book from my regular edition...
Hope this is profitable though, would like to see stuff like this in the future when possible.

That's a shame. I probably can't justify it with my hardcover already bought. :( You neededn't worry I suppose, the money's only going to be going on other Runelords products anyway. :P
Can you tell us about these "handouts" between the pages?
Hope this is profitable though, would like to see stuff like this in the future when possible.
We don't intend to *lose* money on it, but this product is much more about celebration than profit. The production costs on this are frankly kind of staggering, and even if we sell every copy—which we hope to do—the profits will be pretty low.
Let me put it this way—it's a paizo.com exclusive because if we had to sell it through retail channels (with the associated distributor and retailer markups) while keeping a normal profit margin, we'd probably have to price this much closer to a thousand dollars.
With the wife's permission, this has been added to the sidecart.
Still plan on using my new compilation that comes out next month as my "beater." I don't really intend to use the actual book from this set, but I will plan on making use of the handouts, and will most certainly be framing all of the Wayne Reynolds art prints.

Oh, heheh, thanks, I actually didn't understand how preorders worked ^^' (I assumed it would be up for preorder by november :P)
Woah, damn. I just got the email about changing my preorder. You guys are really on the ball!
So are these handouts exclusive to the Deluxe edition? What can we expect? Would it be slim to hope for the town square map as a part of this product? I understand its from an entirely different line, but hey.
The handouts reproduce maps and other player handouts that are shown in the book; they slide into sort of pocket-like slits on the appropriate pages. It's kind of hard to describe; hopefully we'll be able to add some photos soon.
We're hoping to have a sample copy at PaizoCon (though it will probably have just plain white non-printed pages).
Dammit! Swapping my anniversary edition order for the deluxe version means I can't get my bound copy of the AP signed by all the authors at this year's PaizoCon! Need to organise some sort of card that I can place in one of those pockety things...
If it makes you husbands feel better, I am in one of those "how to convince my fiance this is a good purchase" frames of mind... along with "how to restrain myself from making this purchase"
... it can be very hazardous to a household budget to have both members of the couple be avid gamers.
... ... would it be wrong to use excess financial aid money for this?
Thank you for extending the life of my players with this product.
All of them know that our next campaign will be the runelords (picking up the case bundle, and have the cards/ maps already.) As the release date gets closer they all expect the current challenge level to spike until they are all dead or managed to push through our current campaign into a nice happy retirement. This gives them a few extra months of breathing room.
I will go the get both and give my "regular copy" to a friend for Christmas route. Can't wait till November! Who is the marketing genius/demon who thought this up!
Random question. I am conflicted about owning a cool and normal copy of this, but would like the PDF before Christmas time. Any way to get the PDF early without ordering both books? I am on the fence about getting both anyways, one to use, one to look at, I enjoy collecting collectible things. Maybe pay for this early when the PDF for the collection comes out next week? When I pay is not a big concern, but having the PDF of the collection before I deploy would be nice.

Anyone want to start a 'how to convince your wife this is a good purchase' thread? I am in need of some tips... ; )
This is how it worked for me in 5 easy steps, may not work for you... ;)
Step 1: Marry Wife that makes a lot more money then you
Step 2: Convince wife Your Income Goes to Bills other then Joint Credit Cards
Step 3: Convince wife her Income Goes to Joint Credit Cards and Life/House Savings
Step 4: Show wife that after paying bills and showing her income is more then enough for Joint Credit Card bills and Life/House Savings you still have plenty of money left over to fund an expensive RPG/Collector habit.
Step 5: Remember to do all you can to Keep Wife happy or whole thing falls apart because you may have problems getting Step 1 accomplished again.
Okay, before I make my final decision, I need to know EXACTLY what benefits I'm getting out of this deal compared to the regular anniversary edition. The problem is the standard anniversary edition is very vague in what it gives compared to this one. I need comparisons. Especially if I'm going to shell out an additional $110 dollars.
