a fighting chance with a magic weapon? could he not have been more clear or made a ghost touch weapon prominently available?

People start metagaming that way though.

My character again. A half-fiend that had been struggling with the demon he'd accidentally been fused with the whole game. Everyone was really worried since they knew my character had a plan in case he needed to destroy the party them for whatever reason.

He was a lvl 6 character without any maagicked weapons. Twas also a lesson- you are a melee character: upgrade your weapons every opportunity.

a non GT weapon still is not very efficient against an uncorporeal... does sneak attack even work on such monsters?

Nope. It still allows for half damage though. All ghost touch does is allow full damage(and critical hits to certain kinds of incorporeal. I can't remember if it's the type or the ability though)

it's the ability, I checked the undead type, nothing says they are immune to crits or to precision damage, even if they have a slew of immunities.
technically, you CAN do a sneak on a skeleton, zombie, ghoul etc...

Check the incorporeal subtype. Corporeal undead you can chop apart and sneak attack all day long.

Add Undead Bane to the Ghost Touch for extra damage, as well as Holy.

"Problem, adventurers?" it asks.

Piranha Demons were bad. Dave was a very, very intense GM.

Silver Slythe were worse, they were rather slow, nearly unkillable slug creatures that would follow you forever.
Worst, of course was a spider, the Spiga. Dave loved his spiders.

That's when I would find a use for the most broken magic item, my GM ever allowed me to craft.

The "Ring of Infinite Gumbos"
No limit on number per day.
Note: He also ruled Gumbos provided nourishment when eaten (yes, we asked).

I'll stop now. Gone off topic enough; even though I would love to list the many uses we came up with.

PodTrooper,
Yeah, pretty much everything in Booty and the Beast would make someone say oh.....

3 people marked this as a favorite.

years ago I pulled off the following (I think it was 1st edition AD&D)

The party was in a typical dungeon when they went around a corner and realized that the walls went up but didn't hit the ceiling at the limits of their light spell (60') but instead seemed to just end with a great darkness stretching up above them an unknown distance. The continued and realized that while there were worked stone walls they were inside of an immense cavern under the mountain. Then they heard the sound of something big flying towards them. Then it landed on the wall - as if it was designed for this purposed and the dragon, over 60' above them leaned down and smiled"

- yeah, I got a player playing a paladin to turn and run - somehow the players didn't like fighting a dragon in his home cave with walls clearly designed to support a dragon, yet give him perfect breath weapon lanes down to the party (they didn't have any means of flight, vision past 60' or they thought enough magic to deal with the dragon if their heavy hitters couldn't touch him..."

the rest of the dungeon was a lot of fun playing with their expectations

Sketchy decades old memory, but wasn't there a demon that made you roll a save for every sense (vision, hearing, etc...) or lose it, if you so much as got like within 100 feet of it?

I had to look that one up. It was the Archfiend of Anti-Perception.

All within 60 feet of it:
Save at -4 or gruesomely lose sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch.
Worse, if the save was made, 1d6 senses are lost.
(If the six was rolled, all psychic/psionic abilities were lost in addition to the 5.

I should point out that neither this book, nor Necromicon were actually a part of Arduin, with the exception of some content clearly inspired by Dave's ideas.

Nice one Rycaut.
Back in the days when DM's were getting inspiration from Grimtooth's Traps, I had a nice set up too.

*Note: #102-B: Have one or more copies of Grimtooth's Traps, among your books on the table, when the players arrive.

Moving on:
The door you open reveals the 60 ft. long, 40 ft. wide room you are looking into. There are no other exits from it.
Dominating the center of the room, is a square, heavy steel cage, 30 feet on a side, filled with giant scorpions. There is a ring on the top attached to a chain extending into the ceiling. It appears the chain can lift the cage, freeing the scorpions.

Beyond the cage against the wall is a large chest with gold filigree, and decorations of precious stones.
The wall behind the chest, is pock-marked with many small holes 1-3 inches in diameter.
1 foot spikes extend from the walls on either side of the chest , and on the ceiling above it.

OK, so this screams trap, right?
I made it, in response to some annoying players who (anytime asked) stated vehemently that they weren't anywhere near any potential danger. Sometimes, even if what they were just doing would clearly indicate otherwise. But, somehow always would also claim (vehemently again) being "right there" if treasure was found, or some other good result was at hand.

So, usually without fail, the hapless trap-finder would be sent in to dance his way past the cage (claws reaching through the bars) and try to get the chest. The chest does not appear/detect to be locked or trapped (raising paranoia).
More than once, I would ask where everyone else was, and invariably, they were outside the door watching the rogue/thief/trapster.

The trap:
When the chest is opened, anyone standing within 1o feet of the doorway is teleported inside the cage.
That's it. Everything else was window-dressing.
The chest, and it's valuable contents, are there for the taking by the one PC who had the nerve to go for it.

Well I will claim failing memory. I kept those books with Arduin stuff, and since they all looked similar (same publisher?), just considered it part of that collection.

Haven't cracked them open in many years.

completely unlikely and absurde, sorcerers are rare, like all PC grade characters.... unless you have at least 2500 kobolds in reserve, 50 sorcerers among them is simply preposterous

LOL, more preposterous than anything else on this thread?

Yeah, you're right, there is no way they'd all be level one. Throw in some higher level ones too. Can you show me where it says pc grade characters are rare, by the way? It sounds familiar, but I'm not sure.

Actually Azten, while I Don't play it that way, it is part of the Gamemastery concept. Actual challenges to PCs must be uncommon and deliberate, and paced in a way that provides maximum advantage to the party. I kid you not.

At the start of the NPC chapter of CRB (top of p 448), it's stated that most NPCs use NPC classes rather than PC classes... I'm pretty sure there are other mentions but this is what I could find easily.

50 kobolds out of an entire setting though...
