You couldn't afford a sling?

They are literally free. And weigh nothing

The ammo for them costs 1sp for 10 shots. Ask one of your companions for a silver piece.

Or, alternatively, pick up rocks off the ground and use them. Just like nature intended. Perfect for Scrooge McFighter or a barbarian on a budget.

well that would look silly

Big muscle man with a mighty blade and a then he pulls out an iddy bitty sling and starts twirling it around.

I'd be better off throwing the Halfling at them

What makes you think that a sling is 'iddy bitty'? It's a sling - not a slingshot.

Or if it still goes against your sensibilities - pick up a few javilins at 1gp a pop. Even at 1st you should be able to afford 5gp in order to be prepared.

Because DM's are supposed to cater to me and not put me in positions where I have to use a less than optimal method of attack.

If the player fails to acquire ranged weaponry or abilities by accident, or uses roleplay as a justification for their lack thereof, I may alter the game to suit that.

If a player assumes that I will cater to them and thus purposefully only takes melee as an option, I take it as an insult and I WILL force them into combat with multiple flying and ranged combatants.

That toxic attitude will not be tolerated in my games.

My character doesn't carry a ranged weapon because....

  • he has no way to wield them (Blacken curse or something)
  • he can't afford a sling
  • I will charge/teleport/shadowjump to them
  • of my religion
  • backup weapons are for wimps
  • I can only carry one weapon, anything else will encumber me
  • I wouldn't hit anyway
  • I didn't think to get one

Really, the very least a character should have is a sling. Wizards have other choices and usually has a ranged cantrip to take the sling's place.

I have a ranged weapon, but that is not how the Imperial Guard fight.

Now drive me closer so I can hit it with my sword!.

...I figured if Frodo didn't need one, I wouldn't.

Paizo Employee Designer

Of my characters, the one who doesn't carry a ranged weapon has the following reason:

At first level, she was at –4 to hit with all ranged weapons, and -2 to damage. Thus, she might as well throw her melee weapon (only -2 to hit, no damage penalty) instead of paying for a ranged weapon expensive enough to actually do damage (such as a longbow) with starting gold. Then, the AP she's in has no shops from level 1 to her current level of 3 (going on 4).

After long search I have discovered my last character who didn't carry a ranged weapon and can complete the sentence: "this is still early 1st ed and all combat happens in small rooms."

If you count wands and scrolls as ranged weapons then my wizards do carry ranged weapons after the early levels. As for cantrips, find me a cantrip which can be used at a 200' range and my wizards will gladly stop carrying crossbows and slings.

...I have Outflank as my Bonus Teamwork Feat. Nothing Ranged.

For my Cleric:

...Because I can blind you by Shelyn's Divine Light from a Distance.

...I can also cast Wind wall rending your ranged attacks useless.

For my First Druid:

...Because I transform into an Air Elemental and can get to you fast.

For My second Druid:

...Because I can just fireball them.

Someone hasn't read the books.

Conan did use a bow from time to time.

minorish conan spoiler warning, just in case someone cares:

If I remember correctly, he received training as a horse archer while serving in the Turanian army. He actually got mocked because of his bad archery skills initially, but that stopped because a)his archery got better with time and b)he has REALLY big fists, and was not afraid to use them.

It came up a few times later. Once, when Conan started a mercenary band, he trained his men in horse archery to distinguish them from their competitors, since horse archery was basically unheard of in the region.

It was also what inspired him to massively troll a retreating Aquilonian army. He had some of his men mount up on horses, dismount just within bow shot of the opposing army, let off a few arrows and then retreat before the Aquilonian Cavalry could annihilate them. He kept this up during their entire retreat and ended up destroying their morale and wounding the general of the opposing army.

He CERTAINLY was not dismissive of ranged weaponry. Heck, Conan was emphasized to be actually a highly competent leader in the books, despite his rather "uncivilized" ways. By the time he was doing the above he had led armies, black tribes, corsairs, mercenary companies, desert raiders and more. Conan was not just a dumb brutish ignorant barbarian.

That's kinda the point of ranged weapons, kill them before they get close enough to recognize you.

Liberty's Edge

I usually always have a sling at least.

I can see why some players don't use it though.

-it's too expensive at least for bows and crossbows

-require too many feats to be quite good at using it. To get that extra bonus to damage I need to be within 30 feet of the target. It kinds of defeats the purpose of firing from range.

- Have specific build in mind that focuses only on melee weapons

-player preference for roleplaying reasons or simply too stubborn to take a bow.

One way I DON"T suggest DMS force the issue. Is tailoring the game to force the player to use one. Not only do you come across a dick DM. Your putting the player in a uncomfortable situation at the table. It's kind of obvious when the player who has no bow suddenly keeps getting targeted by the nocs. To the extent that they ignore bigger threats. Eventually a player adapts or he/she ends up at a disadvantage against flying opponents. If any DM would pull that kind of BS with me. I would first try to talk to him/her. If that fails leave the game. Or if it's held at my place kick the DM out. People forcing their gaming agendas either as player or DM I don't put with anymore.

I don't think people are talking about doing the equivalent of spamming enchantments against a low wisdom fighter.

They are talking about doing the equivalent of sometimes having encounters that might make the fighter roll a will save.

They are talking about not setting every fight in a 30ft wide room because one of the PCs refused to have *any* way of meaningfully contributing to an encounter in encounters against ranged or flying enemies.

There is a big difference between ruthlessly targeting a vulnerability and not completely avoiding that vulnerability, even if the PC in question brought it on themselves. I believe most of the people here are advocates of the latter but not the former.

I don't think I ever had a character without a ranged weapon . . . I have many characters never actually USE a ranged weapon, but they had one just in case!

Liberty's Edge

All I'm saying is to be careful. Sometimes a player will learn from his mistakes. In this case to carry a ranged weapon. Sometimes they don't. Which is a failure on their part and not the DM. One can't force the issue. Yet one cannot cater to someone who will not learn from his mistakes either. If the same player(s) keep forgetting or ignoring to take ranged weapons. I'm not going to stop throwing opponents who can fly at them.

... because my vampiric lifedrinking sword has an unbelievable hissy fit anytime I try to use any other weapon ("Hungry soooo hungry!").

... never mind I am an archer who can cast Fly, Dimension Door and Teleport among other things (like a base speed of 50).

... I am the party wizard ... but no I do in fact carry several ranged weapons I've almost never used because well I am a wizard.

... because I am a master of stealth and can't recall the last time I didn't choose the battlefield.

... because I am an insane (literally) frenzied bezerker and the thought of not getting up close and personal hasn't occurred to me yet (and/or the barrier or foe I couldn't get up close and personal with hasn't yet happened to make me consider the lack.

... because I am a Mystic Theurge and the one thing I have no shortage of is spells.

Full disclosure - I think only the Frenzied Beserker actually doesn't have a ranged weapon in his possession. But he'd happily acquire something to hurl if the situation did arise.

Going through doorways with a bow strapped to a person's back is a real pain. About the second or third time being jerked to a surprising and sudden stop would be the last straw.

Somebody could make the case that helmets with large stag antlers on them fall into the same category, but they don't count because they look cool.

out of the last three times I did I started 2 wars and accidentally killed the good and righteous king allowing his evil king to take over the kingdom. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it.)
