I don't think Emerald Spire should count since the design intent does not seem to be the same as an AP. It looks to be meant more as a collection of cool levels that will be fun to play but not have any real overarching plot. I am assuming it will be very much like Thornkeep only bigger. I am in no way knocking that kind of product, I just feel like the intent is different and thus doesn't compare. I very much could be wrong since the product won't be out for another ten months.

When I think of a megadungeon AP I think of six books, each detailing three or four levels with plots and quests (perhaps similar to Kingmaker) driving the exploration and lots of different kinds of encounters. The narrative drives the action and not a simple grind for levels to be able to survive the higher challenge areas.

When it comes to megadungeons, for some reason Hollow Mountain really grabs me. Kaer Maga is neat but it never really interested me as an adventuring location. With a Hollow Mountain AP the party is close enough to Magnimar to have access to a major city and each volume could develop the island and low CR levels building up to Azlant's demiplane at the end. We have been teased Hollow Mountain in Dungeons of Golarion but there has been virtually nothing else for it.

All this being said, I'm normally not a fan of megadungeons but I would spend money on a Paizo AP megadungeon, especially if it was Hollow Mountain.

atheral wrote:

I know it's technically not an AP but I feel that given its apparently going to be a several hundred page hard cover I'm listing Emerald Spire as satisfying megadungeon flavor of adventure. If I shouldn't well I'll move it back when someone asks.

I doubt there'll be anymore mega dungeon products for a long while but (fwiw) in my opinion we haven't yet seen a megadungeon AP. The Emerald Spire isn't an AP and Shattered Star didn't feature (much of) a megadungeon.

Sadly, I don't think it's a popular enough concept to ever warrant a true AP. (Or perhaps is seen as too risky and/or difficult by the powers that be). :(

I want an AP that contrasts Andoran and Galt, deals with the concepts of revolution and freedom, and is heavy on diplomacy, intrigue, spying and betrayal. It would be absolutely awesome.

I'd drop money on an AP that's all about stealthy spying and intrigue; the James Bond AP as it were. :D

Yeah. Perhaps we can has AP focused on NOT barbarianizing the furniture for once?

Nex/Geb/ManaWaste/Alkenstar! That's my vote now. I'm happy we are getting more on Alkenstar in a module, but man I could go for more about the city state and the Mana Waste.

Right then I'll put Mega-dungeon back in the list next time I do a tally sheet.

The Paizo CEO wrote, in this very thread, that Emerald Spire was the place to go to get your Mega-Dungeon on.

Link.

So, I think you're right to scratch mega-dungeon: Emerald Spire is it.

I realise its not going to happen. Nonetheless, there isn't yet a megadungeon AP. I don't see the point in crossing out things we think are unlikely.

The fact there are other megadungeon products around doesn't mean I don't still want an adventure path set in a megadungeon. (Even though Lisa's comment and others by paizo staffers suggests its unlikely to happen, I still want to be able to let them know it's my first preference)..

Mega Dungeons are kinda weird to do an AP based on. There can be so little NPC interaction. Now you can say stagger an expidition to Orv that plays like a long Mega Dungeon...

I'd expect any paizo AP to involve quite a bit of NPC interaction. I'm not asking for one extended hack and slash fest but rather the usual, engaging storyline exploring the unique environment of a megadungeon.

I'm sold on Galt if it's the first "evil" AP.

There's another thread about a procedural megadungeon creation subsystem, and all I can think of is Kingmaker in a dungeon, and I want it. I want it in Kaer Maga.

GIVE TO ME THE KAER-MEGA-DUNGEON AP.

Kaer Maga has got whole factions of NPCs in the dungeon, to answer TheLoneCleric's objection.

And I know the cutaway map of the city as inspired by Kowloon Palace has piqued the attention of some developers at Paizo... doesn't that belong in the gazeteer of the first issue of this AP?

TheLoneCleric wrote:

Sorry, but that is complete and utter nonsense. Of course, it's less true in later editions where xp is not gained for treasure, as long as you're goal is not merely to slaughter everything in sight there are plenty of NPCs to talk to in most megadungeons.

Depends on the Mega Dungeon really. Now Kaer-Mega might work because the Dungeon is staged out with the city connecting to pieces of it here and there. A pure top to bottom run more like Undermountain, it's very hard to run until you hit teleportation/etc magic that allows the PC's down time back home.

Now I Mega Dungeon that is a mix of city/local (monster race X) homeland/and large maze complex I'd be more cool with.

Please don't take my comment as an absolute.

That's not true either, every megadungeon I've heard of (except World's Largest Dungeon, which is a poor example) assumes that you don't stay down in them for an extended period of time. You go in for a quick delve, then head back to the surface. There are usually multiple entrances specifically to accommodate this.

Well... if we WERE to do a megadungeon AP, there WOULD be lots of NPC interaction.

Check out Shattered Star. That one has lots of big dungeons in it, and we did our best to make sure there was plenty of NPC interaction in those dungeons. I don't see a problem with doing the same for a megadungeon.

Megadungeons (and regular dungeons for that matter) can become really boring grind fests, which is why I am normally not a fan. However, I have no doubt that IF a megadungeon AP were produced it would be anything but boring and grindy. I would LOVE to see a great, story-driven megadungeon and would jump at the opportunity to run it.

Also, my vote for this hypothetical megadungeon is Hollow Mountain. Kaer Maga never really grabbed me and while I am sure an AP would still be great, it doesn't hold the same draw for me.

i'm with joshua on this one, except i would love a big ass mega-dungeon:) but i do agree that i'd rather it was Hollow Mountain, with Alaznist at the end:) other wise i vote for

I was going to say much the same. Most of my MegaDungeon experiences were Undermountain maze/puzzle GM trolling the group fests. It's why in the General sub-forum I posted about a Mega Dungeon using the optional Ultimate Campaign rules for base and town construction so the PC's can build up their NPC supporters and make a profit out of a mega dungeon.

Liberty's Edge

A couple of my favs have been answered - Paizo rocks!

So I'd still like to see:

Strictly Tian focused AP. Maybe this time going for the Wuxia feel rather than Japanese flavor.

Space - definitely Spelljammer in the Golarionverse!

Time Travel to the great moments in Golarion history. Be there as Earthfall occurs, see the ancient Pharaohs, rub elbows with Karzog and play with crystal along side the Azlants.

A deep jungle Dino adventure sounds pretty awesome as well.

I am not a Distant Worlds fan, and I am definitely not a Spelljammer fan (in my Realms, Spelljammer never existed).

However, seeing that we have a bunch of people wanting both, why not combine them by creating a Pathfinder Trek: Distant Worlds AP? There's already precedent set for space ships sent from Golarion in

Spoiler:
Doom Comes to Dustpawn

Let's give people the ability to enjoy Golarion's final frontier using the sci-fi tropes that so many already know and love (unless you're more of a fan of that other silly sci-fi mess involving Wars). Give the players an opportunity to build a diverse crew from all around Golarion, become chief officers aboard a star ship where they'll have plenty of NPCs to take command over, and zoom around galaxy to the various distant worlds to tell amazing stories of space drama and true tactical combat in a 3D format!

I think the PF devs could create an unbelievable story in the far reaches of space that wouldn't even need Golarion flavor save for what the PCs bring with them on the journey. Plus, all that planet-hopping would be much more intensive if done via a star ship! Portal-hopping has been done to death, and this would give us an opportunity to experience something far more interesting! And it gives people the ability to pilot a star ship! Throw a mech suit in there someplace, and Paizo has an AP that could not be matched. Sci-fi fanatics would get those six issues they've finally been craving for, and perhaps it would even blow the new Numeria AP out of the water . . . or maybe not.

As for me, I'll still put my vote in for a Land of the Linnorm Kings AP (vikings vs witches), an urban-centric AP in Absalom, or a First World/fey AP. Geb/Nex would be pretty cool too.

Spoiler:
I would vote for a Nirmathus/Molthune AP, but if the novel done on it gives any insight into the nature of that fight, it would probably be best for both sides to simply wipe each other out and start from scratch. Neither appeared to have a lick of sense.

Nex/Geb/ManaWaste/Alkenstar is my primary.

Or, lets go east into the heart of the Padishah Empire of Kelesh. I want to finally explore Casmaron! Lets meet the rest of the Casmar people.

Vuadra needs love. I want to get my full on Indian inspired epic on.

Taldor battle of the families houses AP could be nice. I'd love to get in the middle of a good old house vs house game.

I'm down for exploring Arcadia.

Going in the depths of Nidal really needs to be considered. I'm up for taking on the forces of the mad god.

Liberty's Edge

Arcadia... HELL YEAH!

Verdant Wheel

After reading The Stolen Heir (Pathfinder Society Adventure from 5th season), i really really want an Adventure Path about Andoran and Galt, a political thriller with one adventure written by David N Ross. I really liked the concepts written by him.
Corruption philosopher and buried secrets of the revolutioners, really tough choices and a lot of conspirations. Everyone, read that adventure ASAP.

My vote goes to Kaer Maga, whether it is done as a megadungeon or not.

Please, not Kaer Maga yet again, I really hate freak showas like that. Kaer Maga is way beyond my suspension of disbelief threshold. Just playin silly in my eyes.

And I really don't get the drive for a megadungeon. I don't even understand the concept. Why would it even exist?

Shadow Lodge

A non-Golarion AP would be amazing. Having to wait through both Numeria (yawn) and also Orision (meh, might be cool, but I just can't find anything deep down to care yet), a long break from Golarion for just a generic AP, or even revisiting Age of WormsIshNotCanon would be amazing.

Franchisee - Game Kastle College Park

Kaer Maga would definitely be amazing. There's potential for political intrigue on the surface, urban adventures there and good dungeon delves. I mean, seriously, take a look at what's happening in the levels and levels of different things going on underneath the city. Plus, I'd love a shot at an aquatic adventure if you go to the levels under the lake!

But, if we can't have Kaer Maga, let me be the first to sign up to help drive back the Molthuni invaders of our fair Nirmathis!

I think I'd be most interested in the Galt AP as well. If I were to write it, the first third of the story would be the heroes working with a revolutionary group to bring down the government and restore peace to the revolution-torn nation, and spends the third book trying to rally the people to their new banner. Halfway through the fourth book, they find out that another group is making a play for the Revolutionary Council, and they defend their position, but learn that someone has it in for them. They quickly discover that the Grey Gardeners themselves are behind the culling, and they have been quietly perpetuating the Revolution since they showed up on the scene. The end of the story is all about finding out what their ultimate goal is, discovering the horrible truth behind the final blades and bringing an end to forty years of bloodshed.

My Knowledge (Golarion) is not so hot, so I didn't really see what the Galt enthusiasts were all about. But after skimming the Galt entry in the Inner Sea guide and reading Misroi's post, I can get hooked. Revolutionaries, maybe with a sprinkle of Three Musketeers/Alexandre Dumas-style plot - that can be a tripping campaign. So, yeah, +1 to Galt as well.

Freak shows are fun for lots of folks.

As to why would a Megadungeon even exist?

Why do pyramids exist? There's been lots of megadungeons published over the years, some have excellent explanations for their existence others just are. Megadungeons are a unique manner of challenge, and make for great adventures.

Sovereign Court

What I would like to see would be any of the following:

A full-blown urban campaign set in Taldor.

A return to the Mwangi Expanse to search for remnants of Jtembe's legacy.

An expedition to reclaim a Sky Citadel.

A Wuxia style Tian game.

An AP centered around discovering the truth behind Aroden's demise.

Hollow Mountain.

A large-scale conspiracy game where the Aspis Consortium are the obvious bad guys, and it is evident right from the relative beginning, instead of the usual learn about the plot somewhere around book 3. The mystery would be in figuring out the goal, not the bad guys.

Building a Better Man - the truth behind Hermea.

Sun Temple Colony or explore lost Azlant while dealing with Mordant Spire.

A heist game where what is stolen is far more trouble than it was worth.

It would require a way to exclude teleportation or planeswalking, but... Around Golarion In Eighty Days.

Liberty's Edge

With Pathfinder fully moving out of D&D's shadow by this point I think it has become its own game and is embracing much more that just its D&D roots but also its Call of Cthulhu roots.

So lets's see a mythos AP.

Sovereign Court

My votes are for:

1. Space/Planets: PCs are teleported to Castrovel or Akiton. Inspired by pulp stories.
2. Nex/Geb/Manawastes/Alkenstar: Steampunk adventures.
3. Colonizing Arcadia: Characters could align with different factions, sandboxy.

Sovereign Court

I want to play a save-the-princess campaign in Taldor.

The kicker would be that she's ultra-capable, the dragon's her friend, the PCs screw her secret plans and then they have to fix everything for her.

I would love to see a wuxia Tian AP

Arcadia AP sounds amazing as well.

i like the steampunkish Nex/Alkenstar/manawaste idea.

I do support a Nex/Geb/Alkenstar AP.

I think it would have to wait a few turns after Iron Gods though, lest we test the patience of the crowd resistant to guns and robots.

Liberty's Edge

My first wish is for a Distant Worlds AP. A close second is a Nex-Geb-Mana Wastes one. Either one will make me happy.

I would class Nex and Alkenstar as "Southern Osirioni" ethnic nationality, Geb "kind of sort of" although it was actually colonized by Osirionis proper... But the Garundi ethnicity itself is supposed to originate in Southern Garund, so Geb was sort of a "returning to it's roots" sort of thing from a certain perspective. In any case, I see all of those (or Osirion proper) fitting into a plot tying into the rest of Southern Garund, from where the Garundi are supposed to have originated... It would be interesting if the language spoken in Southern Garund is more closely related to Ancient Jistkan or Tekritanin. So an AP spanning from the known Osirion/Nex/Geb area (or even Rahadoum/Thuvia) all the way to (currently) uncharted Southern Garund, and revealing some of the "ancient proto-Garundi history" predating the Osirioni Pharaohs (and giving more insight into the roots of humanity and history of Golarion as a whole) would be awesome.

Honestly, Nex itself seems the most inclined to that theme, as 'ancient arcane knowledge' seems most compatable with the theme of Nex, as opposed to Geb and Alkenstar's themes, and most of the action in such an AP would be happening in Southern Garund rather than the currently mapped East Garund region. It's also a cool way to tie a yet-to-be described region (Southern Garund) into existing ones, as besides the actual traits of Southern Garund, it's historical and current relationship to other known regions of Golarion is mostly a big unknown. Even if they didn't want to go for that East-Southern Garund linkage, a similar structure seems like a good idea, perhaps revisiting the Mwangi Expanse region to start and tying that into happenings in Southern Garund (there also being significant linkages between those two regions, perhaps ancient Xatramba could tie-in somehow?, whether with a Mwangi or a Garundi/Nex starting base/focus).

Only problem with all that is Mummy's Mask is the next AP and it's already set in an Osirioni area, so I expect the APs immediately after that to be set in different regions... Lake Encarthan/Molthune seems a likely candidate, and either a Taldor or Absalom centric AP as well feel "ripe". If Gill-Men and their Aboleth masters could be fit into one of those (Absalom?) I would not at all be upset :-) ...And then Tian Xia is also ready for another AP, hopefully wholly/primarily set there this time (and probably focused on areas other than Minkai), but an eventual return to Eastern/Southern Garund is definitly a good idea IMHO.

DRAGONS!!!!!!!!!!!! LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS OF DRAGONS!!!!!!!!!!!
seriously an AP where the BBEG is a bad ass dragon and you have to fight her children and minions in every volume leading up the end. maybe set in the Molthune/druma/isger/nirmathis area.
