well there are many islands in this sea, most undiscovered or uncharted so you never know if you're outside swanboat range for sure of an island, just swanboat range of THE island (for now)

Well given that the swan is good for 1 24hour trip only, and without a way to find these uncharted islands we would be most likely be sailing into open sea. I think it's best to keep that option in reserve.

I do not think their motives are clear at this point. I am not so sure that they have the capacity to sink the ship. If they did I think the ship would already be sunk by now. Maybe zombies are too dumb to use an axe or maybe trying to hold onto a ship underwater while it is moving and swing an axe is too difficult.

Pernella detected an evil aura moving away from the ship. It might have been Mr. Hawk or whatever was controlling the zombies, we do not know. I have not played a paladin before or I would have thought to mention in my first post that Pernella scans everyone she meets with detect evil. I guess I just assumed that every paladin does that because its undetectable and quick. Ulgulanoth did she forget to use detect evil on the crew or did she detect no evil when she first boarded and met the officers?

You could well be right, but they did manage to punch a hole in the hull so we know they can do it. As to why they have not done it yet. Frankly I'm not sure.

But I have a theory. Assume for a moment that Hawk was a spy. He could easily had something that bollixed the det evil. If this is true he was likely behind the attack on the captain. When that attack failed to kill the captain Hawk implements plan b, the zombie attack. The primary goal of this attack is to destroy the ship with a secondary goal of extracting Hawk. We managed to prevent the primary goal but they were successful in the second. Now the only reason we were successful on preserving the ship was because the enemy exposed themselves by capturing/rescuing Hawk. The next attack will not have that limitation and will have Hawks knowledge of our characters to draw on. This does not look like a survival situation.

I could however be wrong. Maybe they did not come through below the waterline is because they could not. I hope so, but i do not see any evidence for this.

So what to do next? First priority should be restoring order on the ship. Someone with good diplomacy and intimidate should attend to this soon. Next up is looking for evidence.
We need to examine how the undead made that hole in the ship. Warp Wood? Acid? Blades? Smashed or chewed through? Or something odd like disintegration or rendering it ethereal. Examining the room they broke into may provide a clue as well.
We need to search Hawk's cabin to see if we can prove or disprove the spy theory.
We need to see if any changes were made to the ships course after the Captain was attacked. If Hawk was a spy a course change could be leading us directly to a hidden reef.
We need to do a full search of the ship. There may be other surprises.

We can do all these things before deciding about turning back and it might help us to make that decision.

So next step. I volunteer Durant to search Hawks cabin, but he could also help a crewperson go over the log or start with the break in room. Not much good at public speaking so that one is best left to someone more inspiring.

My thoughts anyway.

to answer Pernella's question, none of the crew detected as evil, though i will point out that detect evil can be fooled in several ways

Male Half Orc Skald (War Drummer)

I'm afraid I'm going to have to drop this game sadly. I've been pressured to actually run one and with what's already on my plate as it is I'm afraid I have to drop something. Feel free to have poor Gurthock murdered brutally by zombies, the party or what not.

Sorry for being an absent poster but I couldn't think of any way for Pernella's limited skill set to useful in the current proceedings.

Male Elf Oracle of Nature 6

I'll be on a cruise this week, so please forgive me for not posting.

I think how the curse works is that the person attracts the undead no matter where the statue is. They can spy on the statues so I think sending one away would not help because they would be able to see that it is not on the ship.

But if we seal them both in lead lined boxes then the baddies will only get location data. Direction and distance sort of thing. There will be nothing for them to see or hear. So when we set one free in a wee boat that can do about the same speed as us how will they know which data point is the correct one?

Admittedly this tactic will only buy us a day or two until they figure out which blip they need to worry about but that is a couple of days more than we had without doing it.

Mind you this is academic as dear leader has offered to jump us back to port. Probably a good idea as we need to get a new player and some gear.

I am sorry to say that I am not going to be continuing in this game. I had never tried a PbP game before and the format is not working for me. I want to emphasize that I am not blaming anyone for my experience. I just don't think PbP games are a good fit for me. I am very sorry about any disruption this causes.

I am sorry to see you go. PBP is a strange was to play RPG's but I do encourage you to give it another try sometime.

Indeed, and well that might end this pbp...

To the remaining players, do you wish to carry this pbp foward? or shall we end it here given our loss of 2 players?

Well I am willing to give it a shot. Open up a connection thread and let in some new blood I say.

However that only works if you the DM are interested in continuing. It may just be me but sometimes you come across as less than enthuastic. If that is the case and you are feeling blah then let this sink into the west. If on the other hand you are interested then adding new blood will be a chance to up the energy level of the game and see where the adventure takes us.

well everyone else has stopped posting for a while, so i thought they have grown tired of the game...

Well I must admit it has not been a riviting game. The posting rate has been rather slow. And I for one was a mite ticked that we, the pc's, were being sent on a suicide mission. Military fantasy is a tough genra.

And perhaps the others have wandered off. Given that a campaigh filled this morning in under half an hour players are a renewable resource.

So again it comes down to you. Do you want to keep running the game and if so what kind of game?

Dark Archive

I think i'll call it here the end of the game and try to set up a new game later on, Thanks for sticking with it for so long!

Will you put up a closing post on the main thread?

I probably should...
