Ring Side Report- RPG Review of Treasure Vault

TL; DR-Make or buy something fun! 95%

Basics- IT HAS POCKETS! Treasure Vault is the TTRPG equivalent of a Toys r Us Christmas catalog. Lots of new toys for everyone to play with, from alchemists with new materials, to spell additions that give some extra umph to the fireball, or the fighter with the ability to add pockets to armor.

Mechanics or Crunch- Overall, this book has a solid crunch to the system. There are lots of new toys that everyone can use and enjoy. It's an item book and the items fit with the rest of the toys in the rest of the system. My one major issue is that some things are left out because they are covered in other books. Tell me where those are from so I can check the rules out in those books. It's not a major thing but it's enough so I was a bit confused on some new additions in this book and lead me to check out others books for the rules. Also, the newer rules on crafting are good, but they reference things without giving enough background so I was a bit confused there on first read. More links to the other materials and books would help. Good stuff but enough confusion that I was a bit lost as I read through some of the sections. 4.25/5

Theme or Fluff- I was surprised by the amount of theme present in here! There is a framing device where a dragon and a kobold discuss the new items and materials. It's enjoyable! In addition, all the new toys the book presents are honestly fun and more fitting to the world. 5/5

Execution- This is a slam dunk. Solid layout, easy to read font, hyperlinks, and solid art all make this an easy and enjoyable book for anyone to use. Well done book craftsmanship. 5/5Summary-This book is another solid addition to Pathfinder 2nd Ed. The book is crafted well from a technical standing. The new toys for players all feel fresh enough that players will enjoy them and they feel like they fit in the world. Even the new things all fit well within the mechanics of the world. My main issue is I would like more rules to help me understand how some things are used or how some things are done. If you or your players want more items to spend that sweet, sweet GP on, or or more things to make, this is the book you need for Pathfinder! 95%

Some creative and wonderfull items, overshadowed by some negatives

3/5

The book contains some items I was looking forward to, mostly more druid-friendly armor, but if I am sincere, also a couple of things that feel like they could still use errata.
For my own APs and things the book is essentially in quarantine and players have to ask permission even for common options.
That is genuinely something new, and in many cases, it's about magic/alchemical items with a significant power level increase.

Not just that, but a fair number of items also felt like they break some design guidelines I had assumed existed in this edition of Pathfinder. Like the helmet, I had level 17 AP players ask if they could buy this relatively low-level item..

There are a couple of other instances of items I never hope to encounter at a table, but in general, if a GM chooses to include everything in the book in their game, it will have a measurable effect on player power.

Of course, the book also adds a fair number of new interesting options, but some of what some might call power creep negatively affects my perception of everything else.

Wondrous Expansion to Items of All Sorts!

5/5

Treasure Vault provides a huge amount of fantastic items all players to drool over.

Excellent items!

So, over on my Twitter I'd mentioned that if I got 100 comments from people telling me what section of Treasure Vault they'd be most excited to see a spoiler from (now that the whole Table of Contents is out in the wild), I'd put a single spoiler from the most popularly requested section here. I've bucketed these requests up to broader chapters since some people were asking for chapters and others were asking for specific subsections (blame that on me and Twitter's character limit), and Secrets of Crafting was the big winner here. So I'm going to tease the new "Gardens of Wonder" subsystem!

Gardens of Wonder
"Essentially, a garden is a living item or collection of items that produce herbal alchemical items, poisons, or other consumables at a steady rate (typically one per day) without the need for additional downtime. These consumables are only temporary, however, typically taking the form of a short-lived fruit, flower blossom, or other perishable good. As such, they expire at the end of the day; since characters with a garden can’t stockpile their bounty, they’re encouraged to use the consumable items each day. Even magical and other extraordinary means of preservation have no effect."

Gardens are a tool for PCs to gain a renewable source of consumables for the party. These rules work best when the PCs have a recurring base of operations they can set their gardens up near or in, and can cover a much wider array of consumables and concepts than you might think! A garden of wonder that the PCs invest in could be a bakery, an alchemical laboratory staffed by homunculi, or something like these:

Haunted Churches and Sites of Power
"A cleric creates a living scroll factory from parchment scraps won from contract devils and mummy wrappings, producing eerie-looking scrolls each midnight that explode into black flame the following midnight. Any of a variety of undead or extraplanar creatures might serve as the central seed for a “religious garden” that supplies the character with scrolls,...

I really really hope there is a way for PFS characters to get this in spite of their missions being everywhere. Maybe a portable version.

There is a video showing 2 of them (not sure if they're final) in some sample build.

Breaching Pike - One-handed d6 piercing martial weapon with the Hobgoblin, Reach, and Razing (+2 damage per damage die vs. objects, ex. a shield used for Shield Block) traits.

Phalanx Piercer - Advanced d10 piercing bow with a range increment of 60 feet. Has the Hobgoblin, Concussive, Propulsive, Razing (see above), and Volley (20 ft.) traits.

see the video here.

While we will have to wait for the final rules, the Gardens of wonder seem like they might not be that useful. If the items only last the day and the garden is stationary than the items are effectively useless on any quest or adventure that takes place more than a few hours from the garden.

Think of Kingmaker where players more than most campaigns have a permanent base where they can set one if these up. However even crossing one hex can put you a day away, so if you don't use the consumables right away they are wasted. A 12th level caster with teleport can offset this a bit but that means that caster is always using a slot for tp.

Lots to think about here.

Campaigns that take place entirely in one city aren’t *too* uncommon, while both Age of Ashes and the upcoming Stolen Fate make your party’s “home base” more accessible than it would normally be.

I'm actually already considering the possibility of changing the day rule to a "They last out a voyage" house rule for my west marches for this reason.

They'd certainly be useful in Abomination Vaults though, it might also be possible to move them around, so if you can reestablish a home base for the next 'adventure' that's another possibility.

That is fair. I suppose my immediate concern is Kingmaker because I am running and in person and a PbP of it and pretty much everything you do in kingmaker is a several day exploration away from base.

From what I've heard January 11th is when we're going to start getting reviews of the Treasure Vault. Only seen it on /r/Pathfinder2e, have no idea when do they get this info.

Waiting for tomorrow, then! I wonder if we will get new relic themes or new abilities for existing themes.

All I want is those new magical tattoos! Playing a human with the arcane tattoo feats, and so badly have been wanting these to compliment it!

I am not sure why would Marketing team be involved with the OGL and not only leadership + legal team, but okay.

If Paizo is planning some power move as a consequence of the OGL kerfuffle - and whispers in the woods are that they are - Marketing and PR will be hands-on in getting a lot of work done very fast, as is the design team.

Resolving what could suddenly be either an existential threat to their business (or, if all goes well, a huge swing in their favor) does feel like a higher priority over a rulebook which is still some time away, IMO.

Thanks for your enthusiasm. We are working blogs and a video to promote this rulebook. We are giving out early PDFs to media for exclusive previews. None for those are ready yet.

We launching this month's products, primarily the new Gatewalkers AP. We are planning the next Paizo Live, PaizoCon, and live plays. We have current sales and upcoming sales to promote. There is heavy internal processing of the ambiguousness of the industry right now. We are also trying to carve out time to hire a new Marketing and Media specialist whose job it will be to do much of this, rather than myself. I confess I am struggling to get it all done have a work-life balance. Thanks for your patience and patronage.

Thank you for your reply. It's much more important that Paizo as a company and all employees will keep afloat, and hopefully will have good work-life balance. You're doing insane amount of awesome work for TTRPG community. I can definitely wait as much as needed for the previews.

Was planning to do some support buy today and go for some pocket editions (I normally only do pdf's to avoid shipping costs, but thought what the hell) I very much wanted to include the pocket version of this but then it would split the shipping costs in 2 bundles. do I best wait then till it is officially out?

I don't think it matters. If you order something that isn't available yet, it goes into your sidecart, and will be shipped when it's available. So if you order every pocket version you can, you'll get a shipment (which might be split up) of all the stuff currently in the warehouse, and then the sidecart stuff will trickle in as it's available.

If you want to order say ten at a time to avoid that trickle, then you'll have to wait until there are ten (that you don't yet have) available in the warehouse.

Thanks guess i only the once that are in then.

Edit:actually only going to buy the pfs pdfs that I planned and buy the pockets locally at Amazon ( that way I have more money to support them with since I need less for shipping.
