The Bloody Burden of Aristocracy!

Formally inducted to the Blood Lords as recognition for their past victories, the player characters soon find that the dangers hidden in this prestigious role are as great as the rewards. The new aristocrats of Geb must fend off intrigues of their power-hungry peers, escort the priest-king of a subterranean ghoul nation, and quell a cannibalistic cult—all while investigating the plot to poison living residents across Geb and beyond. The mysterious mastermind behind this plot stalks the halls of power, where the characters now tread, and he knows that his enemies are closing in!

The Ghouls Hunger is a Pathfinder adventure for four less-than-good-hearted 11th-level characters. This adventure continues the Blood Lords Adventure Path, a six-part, monthly campaign in which the characters rise from skilled troubleshooters to join the Blood Lords who rule a land of the dead. The adventure also details the worship of Kabriri, the demon lord of ghouls, and presents numerous downtime activities for the newest Blood Lords to expand their authority. New items, feats, monsters, and more abound when The Ghouls Hunger.

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world’s oldest fantasy RPG.

Pretty sure it's THE underground ghoul nation, given the mention of priest-king.

(this is joke at me not knowing anything about darklands lore because I'm waiting for non 3.5 darklands book and never read that one. Aka I have no idea if reference is obvious or if there are lot of them x'D

Darklands is my biggest hole on pathfinder lore knowledge x'D)

Do not deprive yourself of all the good things that have been written about the Darklands of Golarion for years, whether in setting books or in adventures. The setting is edition-agnostic after all.

And now I wonder about the loot system for this AP :-(

The PCs should be "less-than-good-hearted," so I think the loot system will be ok.

Downtime mechanics for PCs in a position of power and state authority is a fun treat.

I take bribes and use them for the betterment of the living gebbite minority. Starting with myself.

And here is another idea for a PC in this AP :-)

These were revealed at Gen Con, I believe. Jessica Catalan has done some of my favorite 2e work; I’m so eager to see her handle an explosive finale for this, potentially involving Nex.

I think so? We had a Darklands adventure in Extinction Cure so it might have come up or in one of the Lost Omens books.

Extinction Curse mentioned a cult of ghouls sworn to the empyreal lord Tanagaar who are fighting against it; it was in the backmatter on cults.

From the offices of Expectation Management, while I did put some fun Kortash Khain stuff in here (for example—he thinks of himself as too good to "breathe" surface air, so when he must speak, he does so via a ghoul head/torso he carries around to telepathically command it to talk for him, and calls this thing his "Voice"), the entire adventure is set in/under Mechitar. It doesn't go to Nemret Noktoria, and no significant Nemret Noktoria info is included. Maybe in some far future adventure though, if folks are interested!

Hmm…the statement that we won’t be hearing anything about Nemret Noktoria, it has me wondering if we’d ever get a Lost Omens: The Darklands book?

It would be interesting to run a campaign where folks never go above ground, or in a flip of delving into the dark below, there is a quest of breaching the blinding land above.

Worth noting that Nemret Noktoria got a page in Book of the Dead, as did a few other undead-heavy regions. I wouldn't read too much into the absence of a backmatter article on it here - it's pretty far away from Geb (underneath Osirion, if memory serves?), so much of the info there isn't too likely to factor into this AP.

I do have a thread on hyping up a hypothetical Darklands LO book, if that's a discussion you're interested in!

I’m sad to say it’s a pretty big step down from book 3, at least for me.

Spoiler:
I was hoping for a lot more investigation and roleplay from an adventure that takes place entirely in Mechitar, and while there is some of that, there are four sizable dungeons filled with enemies that attack on sight. The overall story seems to be staying interesting at least, and I’ll have to read more in-depth to see if there’s still fun stuff happening in between all of that combat. Abomination Vaults is 90% dungeons and I still love that AP, even though I skipped a significant number of the fights when I GMed it.

Sad to see the inevitable dungeon-delving rear its head in a political troubleshooter narrative.

Anything extra fun in the backmatter articles? I'm curious if the Kabriri section has any morsels, or if any new Archetypes are in this one.

The Kabriri section is a fantastic piece of lore. There are a lot of downtime activities in the backmatter for activities to improve reputation with different factions. There are a lot of really fun higher level feats added to the ghoul archetype which now make me want to have a ghoul PC in it. There’s also a powerful rare Kabriri-based spell and a ritual, but that’s it as far as backmatter material goes.

Ghouls definitely felt like the most fun of the Undead Archetypes, so I'm glad to hear they got some more love. Thank you for the replies!

Spoiler:

Bloodshroud: level 13 undead created by necromancers from vampiric mists

Urglid (Grave Demon): level 13 demons that form from the souls of murdeous undertakers

There's some ghoul variants, including the ghoul antipaladin and ghoul razorclaw

Pyrogeist: level 10 spirit that forms from the deaths of arsonists

Rotbomber: level 12 mindless undead that grow explosive necrotic pustules (very gross and cool)

Straugh: level 10 undead formed when monstrous beasts contract ghoul fever

Terrorguard: level 14 construct fueled by the power of the Dimension of Dreams

A reference to what? A random artwork from Deviantart? What kind of sense would that make?

Ah, I see. Well... this art was ordered many months ago, only further cementing its status as a coincidence then, I guess.

It's very iconic type of composition in fantasy art tbh :D (that's why it made for good meme format I guess?)

I love the way clicking on "7 new" in the message listing for a Product Discussion thread tries to force me to review the entire last page of the thread, instead of taking me directly to the first new message. NOT!

The software goes directly to the first new message in a non-Product Discussion thread. Why the difference? Also why, in the Product Discussion threads, does it always ask me to log in. I'm *already* logged in!

Edit add: It also takes me to the top of the page when I post a reply to the thread.

Manually changing the number by one in the url (the number after "#") usually work to teleport me to the right place. My guess is that it's a bug about the posts loading dynamically, and loading a little bit slower in a product page (maybe because it tries to load the review tab first?), and thus, the "scroll to the post" tries to fire before the post is loaded.

That makes sense. Must be a hard bug to track down, since it's been around at least as long as I have and I've been around here for eight years.

Edit: just tested this theory. Increasing the number by one had no effect, it still went to the top of the page. Decreasing the number by one, it went to the last message for about 0.1 second and then bounced immediately to the top of the page.

Stupid software. :-(

Hello,

When do you expect the availability of the foundryVTT module for The Ghouls Hunger ?

Dark Archive

I do like they avoid statting Kortash Khan since besides him being level 23 creature, 2e doesn't have mythic equivalent yet (though I know that doesn't prevent mythic npcs or monsters being adapted to 2e) and his nature as mystic theurge means he had two long spell-lists and I don't think this is right book for introducing concept of caster that casts both arcane and divine spells :D (though 2e undead bloodline is divine list instead)

I do like sneaky reference of him being "a true hierophant of his faith" though and that he is "a force against that cannot be defeated save by the most mythic and legendary of foes." xD I love sneaky nod backs like this

Oh right, forgot to mention in review I think this book has another example of effects of the post no slavery policy (as in one of encounters has indentured undead servants of one guy who are noted to have about one year of debt left)
