Excellent Book

This is my favorite book released recently. Great lore sections on magic, lots of interesting spells and items. Both the Magus and the Summoner are great new classes that cover territory not previously explored.

I noticed the regular subscription has changed to be able to start with Secrets of Magic, when can we expect the Special Edition subscription to follow suit?

While watching the Secrets of Magic live-stream tonight we learned that the Magus class focus spells are called "Conflux Spells" (Sp?). We also got to see the Magus critically hit a giant scorpion with a Spell Strike using Shocking Grasp for some outstanding damage that felled the creature on the spot.

How was the Summoner?

Summoner did 2 new things. One was a new Focus spell from a feat called Eidolon's Wrath. You pick a type of damage when you pick the feat (the Summoner in the stream picked sonic damage), and it does 5d6 of the chosen type in a 20-foot emanation centered on the Eidolon.

Problem is, the Summoner did that right next to the party, so everyone but the Magus (including the Summoner herself) had to roll Reflex saves. The Summoner rolled 2 Natural 1s (the reroll was from Halfling's Luck).

The second new thing was a new cantrip, called Healing Plaster. It basically lets you make something akin to a set of Healer's Tools (described as mud I think???), working similarly to Summon Instrument. The heightened version even comes with a +1 bonus to Medicine checks, similar to the Expanded Healer's Tools.

EDIT: Also the Summoner Shared Senses with her Eidolon whilst in a tavern, and they (the Summoner and Jason interchangeably) talked about a merged-with-Eidolon feat (which just sounds like the renamed-from-Synthesist feat).

I am so excited for this book and the series as well.

And based on the description on the book and the series, I believe we will get to discover the effects that Pervasive Magic can have on an Area and its people.

Oooh I'm positively giddy at the prospect!

Is it possible to know if this book is still on track for it's august 25th release? I ask because I see some July releases may be delayed.

At this point there is no way to know because the issue is getting the shipment out of the Port of Los Angeles. Basically they won’t know until the shipment is on the last leg.

I watched a good portion of it, no story spoilers but some cool stuff happened mechanically, hopefully a conflux spell gets used next session!

Watching the Shocking Grasp Spellstrike crit was great, and the Eidolon Emanation, and the Healing Mud.

Nothing related to the Harrower was mentioned for the Book of Unlimited Magic, which is the section of the book that has class options and archetypes in.

When I look online on Google theirs a slightly different color that has a really cool looking border around the front. Is their a way to get that cover or was it just a placeholder that’s still showing up?

I believe that was the placeholder image that Erik Mona showed off in the Welcome keynote stream during PaizoCon. Unfortunately, that one seems to just be a placeholder, since pictures of the physical books have come up on Jason Bulmahn's (here) and Aaron Shanks' (here) Twitter accounts.

I was not aware of more shipping delays for Paizo products :(

You are currently seeing a placeholder. The final product has a border.

Hoping for Magus ranged options. As it is, there's a whole class dedicated to martial/magic, and only 1 arcane archer-type dedication path.

That was already confirmed during PaizoCon at the end of May with the inclusion of the Starlit Span Hybrid Study for the Magus. It uses ranged weapons and casts spells through arrows and bullets, which lets you make a Ranged Strike instead of a Melee Strike with the Magus Spell Strike class feature. The developers even stated that it will be "Really easy..." to build a gun magus with Starlit Span. They made sure it was compatible.

Furthermore, if you are interested in it, they even created a Way of the Spellshot for the Gunslinger class, if you would rather go that route.

I am incredibly onboard for the option of selling my cantrip slots for tool kits. I hope healing plaster is just the tip of the iceberg.

100% Agree, I was so excited when I heard about this cantrip. A similar cantrip for things like snare kit, alchemist tools would also be great, I find it a little silly that a single alchemist tools can make infinity bombs/vials of mutagen/etc. A cantrip that creates them would be cool thematically to me.

The problem with alchemy kits and the like is that PF players don't like paperwork. Theoretically one should have to track the contents of such kits, and replace used contents regularly. Folks don't want to do that. There are replacement lock picks, for example, and I think one other replacement item for some kit or other, but that's about all. Same is true for mages' material components pouches.

Oh for sure, I didn't mean to make it sound like every bottle and bandaid should be accounted for (I can't even get people to keep track of their arrows). I completely understand why things are the way they are. I just really like a magical cantrip option as well, for the reasons stated. Less bulk and always having them available is also good.

Are they still waiting for this item to be received? I got a notification that the new AP was getting ready to be shipped or was this always the plan?

They haven't said. The AP volume about to ship is the July book, but Secrets of Magic is August. So everything is, far as we know, on track for Secrets.

Agreed. Personally I'm bracing myself for an unexpected delay because shipping is clearly still recovering, but I would be VERY HAPPY to be wrong.

I wonder if they're going to promote SoM with the pre-generated characters using elements from the book like they did with the APG, that was a pretty cool way of showing off the mechanics.

it took a bit of skill to dredge up, but here you go. I def would not mind seeing this again, as you can see they showed off both the catfolk ancestry, and the dual weapon warrior archetype here.

TL;DR, so I'll cut to the chase!

I placed a pre-order for Secrets of Magic through Amazon, and the order has been cancelled. What's up with that?

I saw some posts concerning delays, etc. Has the project been canceled? Is Paizo ditching Amazon? What's going on?

Thanks!

No the "project" hasn't been canceled, it's printed and coming out next month, barring any new announcements of delays.

You need to contact Amazon about Amazon issues.

Amazon buys from Paizo, there's no direct line of product straight to them, so concerns about things that they've done need to go through them not through the company making the book. As Risky said the book is still coming, this is just likely something Amazon screwed up.

7 people marked this as a favorite.

Amazon will just make up dates for when something is available. You might end up needing to wait over a month after the street date to get the book from Amazon. That's half the reason I started doing the subscriptions. That and the free PDF!

So, are we still on track for an Aug 25th release date?

We have yet to hear otherwise. Paizo has been very communicative and up front about delays to the shipping of the latest products in the past and continues to do so for the most recent products, as can be seen in the July thread over in the Customer Service forum. I would not sweat it, until they tell us it has become an issue. So, in this case, no news is good news.

richienvh wrote:

Nothing has been said from Customer Service to think otherwise.

But also, CS is in the middle of sending out the early August releases to subscribers, so we probably won't get confirmation about the late August releases for another 1-2 weeks.
