The Ruby Phoenix Tournament reaches its exciting conclusion! The sorcerer Hao Jin is nowhere to be found. The heroes' search for the tournament's grand judge takes them across Tian Xia's legendary Flying Mountains and face to face with the Celestial Dragon. They ultimately reach a dark demiplane where a nefarious otherworldly villain is holding Hao Jin captive. In order to rescue the Ruby Phoenix, the heroes must defeat their ultimate rivals and claim the title of tournament champions.

"King of the Mountain" is a Pathfinder adventure for four 18th-level characters. This adventure concludes the Ruby Phoenix Tournament Adventure Path, a three-part monthly campaign in which the players compete in Golarion’s most amazing international fighting tournament. This adventure also includes a gazetteer of exciting demiplanes found across Golarion, inspiring lore about the epic fighting tournaments in other corners of the multiverse, and a mountain of new monsters.

Each monthly full-color softcover Pathfinder Adventure Path volume contains an in-depth adventure scenario, stats for several new monsters, and support articles meant to give Game Masters additional material to expand their campaign. Pathfinder Adventure Path volumes use the Open Game License and work with both the Pathfinder RPG and the world's oldest fantasy RPG.

Probably the coolest book I've ever read

5/5

This legit is my favourite stretch of an adventure of all time, especially the crescendo of it all.

Fighting the evil amped up version of the party's friends into fighting the amped up version of their greatest enemies into fighting Syndara who might just have the coolest statblock in the game.

Everything just felt incredible when running it and I can recommend anyone picking this up.

Love high level content!

5/5

Fantastic book. Always love to see high levels being supported in tabletop games. Please keep making high level content!

Everything high-level play should be

5/5

James Case is a madman. This book is the shining example of what high-level play should look like. Everything is written to be strikingly cinematic, and deftly carries the weight of a truly epic conclusion to a long journey of adventuring.

Demiplanes? You have my attention. I hope we get stats for Hao Jin as well.

I wonder if the Kusari-Gama will prove to be the ultimate rivals.

... on the one hand, information about other fighting tournaments sounds really cool, but on the other, I'm not all that thrilled at the idea of Hao Jin being turned into a damsel in distress.

I suppose it's something out of the mortal realm, as the description says "otherworldly villain". Probably not an oni, but it could be, as it's a demiplane.

From the description of book 2 I have a feeling one will be in that book, but more as a force to be quelled and less something the pcs actually fight

Meh, it is merely speculation and a drake can dream. :) But it would be a different twist for an endgame villain. And if you are right about not fighting earlier, then its presence becomes foreshadowing. Also a 'dark demiplane' with an entrance at the bottom of the ocean as a lair explains so much.

Oh well. I guess we will know in a few months.

Anxiously waiting for the cover reveal.

Cover is partly on the Fists of the Ruby Phoenix campaign page I think, just not here.

why has this been pushed back to July? my understanding of the shipping delay was that It was only affecting the April and May releases.

We cannot comment in that thread. That's just for this one thread due to the delays, I hope?

My best guess is that they are waiting for this to settle on something they are certain of before letting people comment. This will let all the official posts be together at the top.

Yes. There have been delays with the shipment to Paizo, so the delayed shipment is rolled to the later shipments.

Maybe? Maybe August. Maybe September. Who knows at this point.

For those waiting on the actual cover of this AP (like I have), if you click on the temporary picture at the top of this page the actual cover shows up.

Cool! Thanks :)

At the risk of being rude… that elf-y character front and center looks kind of unfinished, to me? It feels a little below the usual Paizo art standard.

I clicked on cover, but I just see bigger picture of old placeholder cover so I can't see what people are talking about D:

What makes you think Hao Jin is captured against her will? A truly powerful entity like Hao Jin would rarely fail to have protections from such things...unless it fits her design. We may discover it all part of her grand design.

So happy to see capstone feats in an AP again! I think this is the first one with the APG classes, too. It's great how most of theme have a common theme of manipulating space. Sever Space is probably my favorite: a fighter can use it to attack an enemy with a slashing weapon up to 80 feet away and teleport right to them (or try to force them to teleport to the fighter).

I love these kinds of things. The only downside is sever space will likely get used once or twice in the character's life cycle due to it being level 20 =(.

Could hand the abilities out earlier as some sort of plot point power up?

I could but I feel this could be a character defining concept or theme and I would love for some of these kind of things/gimmicks to come online earlier to build off rather than gated to just endgame. I mean technically I can do anything in a home game but I feel generally things like this could have been moved earlier in advancement with archetypes (Shadow Dancer shadow jump can achieve similar things... at least in porting the fighter) so I don't see why this needs to be 20 by default.

Looks like 6 of them.

Personal favorite is a Demiplane inhabited by Homunculi. Created by a Nexian arcanist, the entire demiplane is basically a massive library. It was created as a training ground and their descendants continued this tradition. As a wizard progresses in skill and shows a certain level of competence to the homunculi, they gain access to more layers of the demiplane.

I've never heard of the Big Bad before. Searching Google for its name yields no relevant results, so I guess it is safe to say it is entirely new.

What Spell List is Phoenix? Primal? Arcane? Divine? I imagine it would have something to do with Hao Jin and my personal guess is Arcane but I could be wrong

It's primal.

Interesting. How does it stack up vs the fire elemental bloodline? They seem distinct enough from each other?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

The two are very distinct, IMHO. The elemental bloodline focuses on Intimidation where as the phoenix lends more to healing.

Spoiler:
Phoenix: cantrip: detect magic; 1st: burning hands; 2nd: see invisibility; 3rd: fireball; 4th: remove curse; 5th: breath of life; 6th: disintegrate; 7th: contingency; 8th: moment of renewal; 9th: meteor swarm. The focus spells are called, rejuvenating fire and cleansing fire (the other being protection)

Elemental Fire: cantrip: produce flame*, 1st: burning hands*, 2nd: resist energy, 3rd: fireball*, 4th: freedom of movement, 5th: elemental form, 6th: repulsion, 7th: energy aegis, 8th: prismatic wall, 9th: storm of vengeance

SO how are Hao Jin's stats?

I remember from 1E that she was a Sorcerer 20/ Archmage 9.
Since we don't have mythic rules yet, I am most curious to see her stats and her full level which should be at 24.

I know we got Grendel which was a mythic creature CR19/MR7 and in 2E he is still a level 19 creature.

So would love to see what Hao Jin has.

Anyone care to share?

They have decided to not give stats of powerful NPCs that you don't fight, mainly to not paint themselves into a corner in case they want to use them later in a context that would need specific stats.
