The best intro product of a TTRPG I have ever played. Recommended continuation: Troubles in Otari and/or Abomination Vaults.

Pathfinder 2e's Beginner's Box deserves its 5 star rating

5/5

I love the Beginner's Box, because it's a great tool for introducing new players, and for new GMs, even those who are familiar with the system. It's meant for someone new to play it each time, whether that's the GM or some of your players. To that end it focuses on introducing new concepts at a great pace, accentuated by the 'how to play' blurbs found in the book. These concepts are introduced in a natural and meaningful way while giving players a room to stretch their legs. By that of course I mean that they can go wild in a dungeon crawl and really show their excitement for learning a new system.

The scenario is a two-session (four hours each usually) dungeon crawl which gradually introduce various mechanics of the game, going from simple things like fighting rats, to gaining loot, to learning consequences of navigating dungeons in a particular way, to skill challenges, and solving puzzles and using knowledge of the area to your advantage.

Each of these things is important to a player, but just as important for a GM to figure out how to manage. It never throws too much at you at once, either as a GM or a player, and so it remains pretty manageable, when you adhere to the four person party recommendation. Five people might get a little claustrophobic.

By the end of it, the players will face their "final exam" of everything they've learned. The players should feel pretty powerful in this one, and I DID make some adjustments when my players were doing particularly well, just to keep them on their toes, which they loved, but don’t go overboard, especially if you’re not familiar with PF2e balancing.

For players: There's not much new stuff for a veteran player, but a first run through will provide a fun dungeon crawl with your friends. It always helps a GM to have someone knowledgeable about the system.

For GMs: Be sure to read how the monsters are played. This is commonly referred to as "morale," and it's crucial that you play your monsters as smart as they're supposed to be. Some of the enemies in this are clever, and some may not have as much experience as others. It's crucial to ensure that you play the monsters as written, especially the final fight. That one CAN be tough, but in the end, your players should emerge feeling like accomplished heroes.

As a closing statement, (though keep reading afterward if you plan to run on Foundry VTT) the Beginner’s Box has great value, and even comes with cool art and pawns, (tokens used to represent the monsters) as well as giving some background lore on the place that you’re in while providing some nice segues into newer adventures as well as good ideas for starting new ones of your own. It also has some magic items which aren’t used in the adventure (unless you want them to be!), some of which even come with art. All in all, massive value from this one, especially if you plan to get into PF2e, or are trying to get someone else into PF2e. My players and I had an amazing time both times, and I as a GM am VERY satisfied.

Another thing for GMs who plan to run this on foundry VTT: PDF to Foundry is a great module for this one, ESPECIALLY if you’re new. Importing the Game Master's Guide PDF that comes with the BB sets up a lot of stuff for you, which is useful, not just to save time, but to learn how walls are used on Foundry, as well as the use of map notes in order to make the gaming experience smoother. However, I should warn you that not everything is immediately laid out, as you’ll still need to place loot, (which just means making a loot actor and dragging the proper items from the compendium – I suggest the Quick Insert module to expedite the process) as well as adjusting certain things to your specific liking, such as lighting and other effects if you’d like. My advice for setting up loot actors is to change the loot actor token from its default treasure chest image, into a blank .png, then place it over the treasure chests/other lootable things on the map, and so what players will simply see is a nice and natural clickable area on the map for them to walk up to and loot. You should play with the VTT before running, and figure out what it does before trying out TOO many modules. You don’t need to port forward anything, so don’t worry in case you’re confused about that. Lastly, if you hit P, you get a useful party overview, which is helpful for managing who has what skills, as well as two very nice buttons in the exploration tab: one to rest the party, and the other to allow players to roll checks and automatically show who succeeded based on the parameters you set. I.e. you ask for a DC 15 athletics check, and people can click on it in the chat and it shows their roll and degree of success. Foundry is very customizable, so it’s easy to go overboard with modules, but do test to make sure every one of them works before getting more.

Thanks, Paizo, sincerely. :)

5/5

The very first adventure any new GM should play. The adventure is written as if you’re brand new to any tabletop RPG so you can run this without having to read the Core Rulebook. It’s learn as you play. The adventure can be completed in two sessions and has its own little bestiary if you want to continue running a game with just the content in this box.

The only downside, however, is that it's not a very heroic adventure. You're pursuing a pretty simple job, there's not much of a narrative, and doesn't really show off what you can do role-play wise.

It raises the bar of what a TTRPG starter set should look like.

5/5

I had been curious about Pathfinder 2e for a while. I read the Core Rulebook and The GM Guide and was excited to start playing Pf2. I was however a bit nervous about how to teach the system to other new players. Or, I was until I got The Beginner Box.

It's got everything you need for the first tiers of play and is beautifully laid out in easy portions that makes the Pathfinder 2e system readily available for players and GM.

Paizo really didn't skim on the quality of the set. It's got a guide for players, that is very handy to pass around the table and a smaller version of The GM Guide that lays out most of the information you need to start playing Pf2 ASAP.

Ah, ok, I see.

Yes, the roll of 20 in and of itself is a success in that encounter, no matter what your attack modifiers, because it beats that first target's AC.

Then, because you rolled a 20, that success improves to a critical success.

Ordered and Downloaded the PDF.

First thing I notice, opening in Adobe Pro X, is that the Pre-Gen Character sheets are needing to be fixed. Numbers outside of boxes, over words.

All 4 sheets, specifically over the Armor Class area.

Also would be nice if they were broken down into 8.5x11 to make them printable on standard at home printers. most of us don't have 11x17 capabilities :D

That's peculiar. Being a Paizo's PDF, I thought it would have applied...

Definitely should apply, but sometimes when things first get released they fall through the crack. Someone will need to toggle that on when they get back in the office tomorrow.

Honestly, the main reason I picked them up was for easy printing of the pre gen sheets.... Not having them as 4 individual 8.5x11 pages and having the text not in the right spots are bigger issues for me than the 2 bucks or so I would have saved.

I have also bought the PDF and Paizo Advantage didn't apply. Weird.

I am very impressed with this beginner box! Didn't dive into rules that much, but I noticed there are some exclusive items and monsters in the product, which is nice. What I want to compliment the most is the presentation! Not only is the product very readable and clearly laid out, the rules and game are explained WONDERFULLY. And the adventure from GM's book is a great intro and it explains the game SO WELL. Out of all intro products I have ever read, I think this one is the best when it comes to presentation and explaining the game. Good job Paizo! I also think that the dungeon is pretty nice, not dull and not overcomplicated. I really give this product a thumbs-up.

Something odd that I found (and I have not seen this brought up anywhere else) is that the Character sheets

(at least through the link that I viewed:
https://paizo.s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/PFBeginnerBox_CharacterSheet.pdf)

have the wrong calculation for a melee weapon attack roll.

Melee Weapon Attack rolls are entered in there as being affected by DEX and not STR. DEX affecting your melee to hit should only be an option that's available when you use a Finesse weapon.

Other than that they look beautiful and I wish there were versions this visually appealing that had additional bubbles to mark when you gained Master and Legendary proficiencies.

PDF Errors:

PreGen Characters:
Text on these in the lower right of the character sheet are severely misaligned.
Please make these into printable 4 sheets of 8.5x11 for printing at home without having to edit/modify the secured documents?

Top Sheet.pdf:
It says in multiple spots to turn to page XX and XXX where it should list the actual pages.

Second page says Components with labels, similar to Starfinder's top Sheet may want to be updated/removed....

Character Sheet:
The To Hit on the Melee should have STR/DEX. not just DEX. It will be confusing to players who do not have the ability to use Finesse

Feels like these documents which appear to have been uploaded in October were not updated with the final products that were in the actual box....

Is it intended that the Pathfinder Advantage discount doesn't apply to the PDF? If so, may I ask why?

I just looked into that myself. After reading the FAQs on subscriptions I conclude that if a product has a corresponding pdf, and if when you buy that product you do so via a subscription, you pay for the product and you get the pdf for free. If there is no subscription for the product (and the BB is not a subscription product, as the product description page says) or you don't have a subscription to the appropriate line when you buy it, then you don't get the pdf for free. So I'm gonna go order it in a minute (I already have my box). :-)

Added: Oh, I guess that didn't answer your question. I don't know the answer to that - I would have thought the discount would apply. I'll get back to you after I place my order. :-)

Yeah, you missed the addendum where I said I didn't know the answer to that. I do know that the order I just placed for the pdf didn't include the subscriber advantage discount.

I also noticed that the red blurb at the top of the product now says "you ordered this product today" and links to the pdf order I just made. Which means if I ever want to find the order that contains the physical product I'm going to have to search my order history manually. :-(

Also, what's with this damn "you backtracked too many times" BS? *I* didn't backtrack at all. And I don't like it when software tosses my carefully constructed epistles in the trash without my permission. I'm not angry, but I *am* annoyed.

I've noticed that when I get that error screen, if I use the 'back button' on my browser toolbar, I'm returned to the previous screen without any loss of text. (Firefox 82.0.3)

Well, I tried that in Safari. Didn't work. Seemed to be in a loop. <shrug>

I wonder if this is related to the occasional Ysoki tinkerer page I get, which I suspect might be fixed by me clearing the cache and deleting all cookies for this site - which I don't want to do because I suspect it'll forget which forum threads I've been following.

I have confirmed that the Art Dept has corrected the PreGens and Katina, the Store Manager, has uploaded them into the system. Our system can take a while to update the files. (I just tried it and got the bad files a second time too.) One can try the "refresh downloads" button at the top of the digital assets page, and if that doesn't work then click the "having problems downloading?" link by the digital asset itself. Lastly, please have some patience and return.

The "Top Sheet" doc should not be there at all. It will be removed from the folder.

In the printed blank Character Sheet was indeed an incorrect version. There will be an updated sheet when the files are updated. In the correct version the first "MELEE WEAPON" To-Hit space has STR/DEX, the second "MELEE WEAPON" To-Hit space has only STR.

Thank you for calling this to our attention. We apologize for the faulty launch.

Preliminary/Cursory first glance looks good. Seriously love what you guys have done with this kit. Going to try to convince my kids to run it this weekend :D

Hm. My download a couple of hours ago doesn't have the "Top Sheet" doc, but it does have "updated" attached to the names of all the Pregen files and the blank Character Sheet. However, the Character Sheet has STR/DEX for the first weapon and DEX for the second. Am I correct in assuming this is *not* the latest version of these things?

I picked up my box at my local store. I have been reading through it. I really like the way attributes are done. Just use the bonus, after all that is all that matters. This product is just so beautiful and well done.

Can we expect a player and/or gamemaster addendum that adds a few extra things like we got with the first edition beginner box? If so, might I suggest maybe adding the bard class and the gnome ancestry?

One question that I do have is how this relates to Troubles in Otari. The beginner box only has details to advance to 3rd level, but Troubles in Otari is supposed to be able to take you beyond 3rd. Will the adventure contain the details to get to 4th or 5th level?

If the adventure doesn't contain such details, they'll be in the CRB. :-)

My error: DEX for the second is correct. Sounds like you have the correct Character Sheet. It matches the free download on the Pathfinder Beginner Box Landing Page.

Will the same colored dice set be available to buy? I would make it easier to hand it to new players at the table if all were same set.

Will there be a downloadable version of the blank character sheet available for download (hopefully linked to this product page)? Or do you have to purchase the PDF version to get it?

This link will take you directly to the Character Sheet PDF

And, of course, as Ed Reppert said, you can make as many copies as you like of the blank character sheets from the box

One error I noted in the text is under the cleric’s Daze spell, it says “This deals mental damage equal to your Intelligence” - shouldn’t that be Wisdom, the cleric’s spell casting ability, instead?

I'm a little confused about the ability score generation used in the beginner box, in that it seems to be possible to get a +5 or effective score of 20 in an ability at first level if you are either a Human Acolyte Cleric, Human Criminal Rogue, or Human Scholar Wizard. I'm not sure if I just haven't seen where it says you cannot do that, but yeah.

I purchased the Beginner Box at Roll20. Looking great. With other Pathfinder purchases I have made on Roll20 I was given a PDF version of the product - which appeared in my downloads. Nothing has shown up for the Beginner Box.Any Advice?

I purchased the Beginner Box at Roll20. Looking great. With other Pathfinder purchases I have made on Roll20 I was given a PDF version of the product - which appeared in my downloads. Nothing has shown up for the Beginner Box.Any Advice?

Same here. I emailed customer support for roll20 last week, but haven't heard back. If I get an answer from them before something pops up here, I'll let you know.

Inquiry received. Answer unknown at this time. Will research and reply. (This is my robot golem voice. haha)

Thanks Aaron! For what it's worth, Roll20 got back to me and said that I need to contact Paizo, so I guess the right thing is happening.
