A must have collection for any GM

5/5

These now reside in my GM kit alongside my GM Screen and Flip Mat. Perfect way to ensure you always have the right monster for the job.

Made of awesome and win

5/5

So simple, yet so exactly what is needed. Got this for Christmas and I love it. Can't wait for this to be an annual update option.

Solid product! Weird sizes!

3/5

As the other reviewers have pointed out, this product is high quality, has pretty art, and the price is right. However, there is a sizing issue. The so-called "medium" pawns tower head and shoulders (and sometimes more!) above any and all of my medium-sized minis. As such, it looks really goofy when you have a mix of minis and pawns on a battlemat. I don't want my distractible players being all like, "OMG why is the zombie bartender 9 feet tall ARGHPTH!"

I would advise aesthetically minded GM's to use either all pawns or all minis, not both if you can avoid it. Despite that, I think this is an excellent product and an innovative idea by Paizo, and I recommend it!

I do have a gripe about the PDF price, though. I will be getting all my future pdf's through the subscription, but tell me why I would buy the PDF for my existing Bestiary Box from Paizo when I can buy a second physical copy of the box on Amazon for less than the PDF! That just ain't right...

Ludicrously good value

5/5

If you are a GM and don't already have a substantial collection of pre-painted minis from the heyday of the D&D miniatures line, drop what you are doing and buy one (or two) of these boxes. Even if you do have a good selection of minis, these pawns are well worth the cost of admission for use at conventions or in other GMing on the go.

Either way, this box has joined the Condition Cards and Flip-Mat: Basic on my short list of must-have products that deliver crazy value for Pathfinder GMs.

You know, I usually shoot for comprehensive and coherent reviews that cover every aspect of a product, but in this particular event I am unable to do so because I'M SITTING ON THE FLOOR AND PLAYING WITH PAWNS LIKE I WAS 6 YR OLD AGAIN. THE BIG BAD FROGHEMOTH IS ABOUT TO EAT POOR LITTLE PIXIE. RAWR GROLB SMASH RAAAARGH. BAAAAAD FROGHEMOTH.

<Needless to say, this is a brilliant gaming aid product, regression to early childhood aside.>

<WHAI NO T-REX PAWN???????>

I just wanted to say that I've been hoping for a product like this from Paizo for a long time. Even as a miniatures collector, I'm going to jump all over this. It's awesome to know I'll be able to represent all of the Bestiary 1 monsters for under $35!

There are plenty of companies out there that make monster counters, but Paizo is going to be able to raise the bar when it comes to presentation and quality. Sold!

That's a very good question. I hope that Paizo offers up a bundle of bases that can be bought from their store.

We're also looking into this, and hope to be able to offer additional bases. I'm also going to look into multi-colored bases, as that sort of thing could come in very handy for GMs for all kinds of reasons.

As would NUMBERED bases! :)

I really don't understand why more GMs don't request numbers on minis or pawns. Seriously, how do you guys keep track of 6 goblins fighting the party at once without numbering the minis or pawns? Wouldn't it be very useful if they came with numbers on them already instead of having to paint or write them on yourself?

What if I have a tradition to name my Goblins "Mandy, Sindy, Cindy" and as such numbers would be of little use for me? :)

I'm at work and don't have the link handy, but IIRC, Kenzer and Co. have free downloadable papercraft numbered bases you can put your mini's on that were perfect sized for 28-32 MM minis. I haven't had the chance to check them out for myself since I only saw them in KoDT the other day, but they looked pretty useful.

So it sounds like GMs are using various workarounds and 3PP (which is what I figured). Telling me that this is a feature that would be useful.

Gorbacz wrote:

I traditionally name my slightly more powerful goblins; Moe, Larry, and Curly.

(If there is a forth goblin I name him, Shemp)

Am I the only one who just puts a die with damage (if it's complete mooks) near (or under the base of) the poor sod who takes damage? Most of the time, the ones used in great numbers have a tendency to go down fast in my games (especially when we are talking gobbos and kobolds), so even with dice out for damage it won't be cluttered for long.

If some sort of signifier appears (a dot of color or a number) in a bottom corner of the pawns I wouldn't mind. But if it's hard to do, I can live without them.

Also, I name my goblins "Per, Leif, Odd, Gunnar" and so on, so these other names wouldn't be much use to me either :p

I think is a great idea by Paizo. And for those purchasing it I hope it turns out well for you. But since I will be purchasing the miniatures, can't see myself buying both.

Bases sold separately is a good idea, as is multi-colored. Don't skimp on the bases in the box though. For instance, my Kingmaker group is 6 players, 4 of whom have leadership/cohorts, and we're all mounted. That's a lot of "large" bases. Probably in the extreme end of the example, but you can see how it gets to be a large number quickly. Along those lines, multiple tokens for the various size and type of animal companions and mounts would be nice. (Large Tiger with a saddle, for instance)

Overall looks like a good product, but I'm concerned with the packaging. Though it would involve a greater number of catalog items, I wonder if tailoring it to groups might prove more beneficial to the customers. For instance:
Orcs/Goblinoids
Ogres/Giants
Animals
Vermin and swarms
Elementals
Mounts and exotic mounts
Abberations
Dragons
Celestials
Demons
Devils
etc.
I think you get the idea. Folks wouldn't have to buy figures they wouldn't need. Bases could even be completely sold separately with this model.

I can see us doing smaller configurations to support the Bestiary Box, but we wanted to start everyone off with a nice big collection of (almost) all the creatures from the main monster book.

Later stuff will come later. :)

None of my groups ever use minis/grids, but I just wanted to commend Paizo for how wonderfully they seem to be treating this market. Between these and the painted minis, my already Paizo-devoted wallet is very happy with my groups' play-style... :-P

One of the most-used amenities of my old gaming club's basement lair were two Blood Bowl teams. Already coming pre-numbered was a god-send when having big fights in the AD&D campaigns I ran back then - who cared if the orc team had to stand in for gith one day and city guards the next? As long as they were convenient and numbered, it was all-right with us!

While the idea of a bestiary box is not that bad I for my part only use the paper flats from OneMonk.

These minis are perfect for D&D/rpg combat. IMO he has the most experience in the industry in producing them. They are beautiful, simple and easy recognizeable from a distance of 50-100cm. I agree with Gorbacz that the figures as shown in the paizo pics are too complicated.

Yeah, except that they are less sturdy than the Pawns that are going to be in the Bestiary box and I'm not really a fan of the art. Not saying that all the art in the Paizo's Bestiary are to my taste but much more so than the OneMonk art. And I've used those before. Theyre not bad but then when I wanted a monster I just cut or copied from the PDF of the Bestiary or module (AP or otherwise) that I wanted and scaled them to a Paper Mini template that I found and print those out on a color printer.

Part of the whole reason that I'm excited about the Bestiary box is the quality of not only the art but of the BUILD of the pawns. That they are printed on relatively hard/sturdy cardboard is a huge plus.

I have the feeling that I'm still going to be using some paper mini's to supplement my game but on the whole if Paizo decides to start doing these for each Bestiary to date and their AP's as well? That's where my money will be going...

For the record, what impresses me the most about this product is that when the Beginners Box came out a thread was started saying how much they liked the Pawns in the box. And then they made more.

It can be difficult for a company to be connected enough with their customers that they can find out what people want and then create it for them. Will everyone be happy? No. Someone will want this and others won't want that. But as one of the people that asked for this product, I'm really glad you're making it. It's like it's for me.

They also have a set that's 30 plastic bases for $8.95.

This looks like a really nice product. I can see it being particularly useful for DMs who travel and have to carry their minis/tokens/pawns with them. I just wonder to what extent this might compete with the Pathfinder Battles mini line. Will people choose more of this versus fewer, but cooler, minis?

As a gamer and customer I think this is a win-win. Glad to see this being offered.

I'd just like to say this is a great idea for a product, and i'm glad to see it coming out.

While I'm sure that it wont please all of the people all of the time- anything which contains a mix of monsters is always going to have to compromise - for me personally its going to be the first "must have" product paizo have produced for a while.

The bases above will most likely be the best bet for PDF printed paper minis. The ones from Paizo will be best for the thick card stock minis they put out. I will most likely be getting both styles.

oh man. let me buy it now.

Do some gargantuan creatures get huge-size pawns? For example the famous kraken, roc and Purple worm?

They have said some of the common monsters will have more than one. Plus if this sells I wouldn't be to surprised if they don't sell some smaller packs like maybe humaniods or something along those lines for people needing more of certain monsters.

Do you mean from a practical or aesthetic standpoint? Because from a practical standpoint they ones from Pigames work just fine with the Paizo pawns. Granted I the black round bases that come with the Beginner Box look better.

I love you, Paizo. This is EXACTLY what our group has been looking for. I'll be yelling at my local shop to order these asap. +1 for more, more, more!

Multi-colored bases would be awesome as well for so many different reasons. And I am 100% behind the blank white background and different art for different sizes.

On elementals, especially small and medium ones, multiples would be nice there. Not necessarily ten or anything, but two, maybe three of them at those sizes would be great.

And assuming this box is successful thus encouraging more boxes down the road, in addition to bestiary 2 and 3 boxes, smaller, specialty boxes would be amazing. An orc box with orc warriors, orc archers, orc shamans, orc champions, etc (and then applied to the other stereotypical bad guy humanoid races) would be even more amazing.

Anyway, definitely buying this and any other 'pawn' box sets. This boxset has even encouraged me to buy the beginner box set for the pawns in it, an order I will be placing through my game shop this weekend.

Thanks again, Paizo,

Love, the Illuminaughty.

Erik, would that include dragons up to colossal in size, with bases to match? I would imagine that would be one really big pawn!

No matter what, this will be a must buy for me!

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

All of the pawns in this box will be Small, Medium, Large, or Huge.

Just opened my Beginner Box Set and immediately sifted through until I got to the pawns. I like them a lot. Also, as the beginner box set includes elementals multiples don't seem as necessary to me. Sure, I still want to see one of each size in the Bestiary Box, but I now get to have dupes of the smaller elementals thanks to the Beginner Box.

What my group will miss is having pawns for the non Beginner races - half-orcs, gnomes and halflings. I'd love to see these accounted for in the bestiary box if possible, but realize it is called the "Bestiary Box" after all. Still, here's to hoping. My poor half-orc wizard will just have to be something less appropriate for now.

*drools as he awaits the release and envisions more to come*

Liberty's Edge

I would vote for multiple colored bases.

If possible keep them kind of subdued though. NO neon or yellow. Not a fan of yellow. :O)

Question regarding the materials & construction of the pawns in relation to the Beginner Box pawns (which I have seen, but don't own)--are they going to be the same thickness/stock of material?

If so, I'm going to pick up a Beginner Box for the pawns. I saw them, I like them, but if the Bestiary & Runelords pawns are going to be a different thickness or material, then I might not. I know, seems petty...but it matters to me.

Either way, I think this is a brilliant idea and have hopes that there will be enough interest to spur production of Bestiary 2 & 3 creatures, as well.

My hope is to see a Player's Box at some point with a variety of player friendly minis in this fashion :) Beyond the PBB that is ;)

Might I suggest making blank sheets available for sale so that people who get the paper minis could just past them on and allow them to use the same bases?

Am I the only one not excited? I can't justify buying this because if I need 6 kobalds for combat (kingmaker) I'd have to buy 6 boxes... This is stupid.

Have you tried the Pathfinder Paper Minis Kingmaker sets?

I wonder if there'll be any market for singles of the pawns.

How does this product stand in relation to the beginnerbox?

The beginner box include 4 or 5 martial goblins. Seems like enough to me. On the other hand, you can't afford to not include them.

Will caster goblins be included? Will an approach similar to the 'Pathfinder Battles' goblins be used where there is a difference in visualisation between the two sets of goblins so they can be used as different clans if desired?

Same for the skeletons. 4 seems enough to me, though it might be interesting to include burning/bloody skeletons. If the art is subtle, you can use them for both.

Question regarding the materials & construction of the pawns in relation to the Beginner Box pawns (which I have seen, but don't own)--are they going to be the same thickness/stock of material?

They should be identical in material and construction.

I'd suggest just buying the Rise of the Runelords Pawn Collection and pasting over the printed images.

(Blank sheets probably wouldn't sell especially well, and probably wouldn't cost that much less to make.)

I'm just one person, but I would totally buy a box of blanks. I don't know how much of the price of the item is wrapped up in art, but if this set sells well, I hope you would consider either a dedicated box of blanks or perhaps a sheet or two of blanks with future releases.

Dark Archive

Do we know how many if any PC races (outside the core) will be included in this?

This is actually a great idea. I was pretty much printing out my own pawn/minis anyway. It would be nice to be able to tape/glue them onto something sturdy like the "pawnstock" material.

This is legit right?

Alright so I know this is coming out in May, but why is it not yet linked or shown on the same page as Advanced Races and/or the new Character Folio?
