Cornerstone Gaming Aid

*****

Short Version: If you use maps in your game, this gives a great foundation of enemies for a fraction of the price of minis.

The pawn boxes, particularly this one containing so many oft-used monsters, each replace hundreds (let's be honest, thousands) of dollars in minis in an easier-to-store solution.

There are a few problems that aren't enough to bump the score down, but are worth mentioning. I often find I don't have enough copies of common monsters, although the Monster Codex box helps a great deal there. The lack of gargantuan and colossal pawns is understandable (they'd be a giant pain to fit on sheets), but still felt. And, after years of weekly use, these pawns don't return snugly to the sheets anymore, necessitating different storage.

Pretty Much Perfect

*****

I'm finding it hard to figure out what to say when reviewing the Pathfinder pawn boxes. The product details are listed on the back of the packaging, so for the Bestiary Box you'll know you're getting 256 different creature pawns, with some of them coming in multiples for a final count of over 300. The pawns are thick, sturdy cardboard and have held up well through months and years of play. They slot neatly into little round plastic bases, and the box comes with 21 small/medium bases, 10 large bases, and 5 huge ones. Although there might be an omission here or there (I haven't cross-checked), almost every creature that appears in the Bestiary will have a corresponding pawn in this set. The only consistent exceptions are any creatures larger than Huge, as Paizo has refused to come out with any pawns that big. The artwork is full-colour and (usually) matches the creature pictures in the book, the pawns are titled and numbered to match the list on the back of the box for easy sorting, and there are little set indicators so you don't get the pawns from this box mixed up with pawns from other boxes. If I had any criticisms of the Bestiary Box specifically, it's that it's not always intuitive why they chose some creatures to have multiple pawns and others to only have one: for example, there are two "Bralani Azatas" (I'm not exactly sure what that is), but only one Shadow and only one Wraith, etc. Still, quibbles aside, this is an excellent set, and having these pawns sure beats checkers, coins, random minis ("Gandalf is the hyena"), and the various other things GMs sometimes have to put on the table. From one point of view, I can see why it sounds ridiculous to spend $ 44.99 USD on little pieces of cardboard. But . . . somehow it's worth it!

Best Looking Backorder EVER

*****

I will just drool over these, I'd offer a much more honest rating, but I can't buy them, they are permabackordered. Sooo... they're awesome. Looking. I'll just sit here in my sadness without them. Crying softly. Curled in a ball on the shower floor, cold water and tears running down my face and over my nakedness. I will attempt to carry on. I will survive this. Paizo, you're my only hope. Unless I pay 87.00 on amazon.

A Solid Compromise Between Paper Minis and Solid Minis

*****

I decided to pick this up after I ran the introductory adventure from The Beginner Box. I had a lot of fun assembling the pawns from that box and placing them on the map for use during the adventure. I don't have the storage space or the budget to buy plastic or metal miniatures. I also don't have the craft skills to make paper minis. So, for me, pawns fit my requirements for miniature figures. The artwork is cool and they store easily in the Beginner Box or their own box.

Bestiary Box is the Answer to GM's Prayers!

*****

When the clerk at the local game shop told me that the only way I would find a Pathfinder game would be to run one on my own, my mind immediately reeled thinking of the hundreds of miniatures that I would need to properly host a game.

Then I thought about the Pathfinder pawns line and the answer to my problem was in sight! I picked up the Bestiary Box prior to my first session and happily realized that almost every monster that I needed was represented within!

The pawns are sturdy and the artwork is gorgeous. The players really enjoy the added value of seeing the exact creatures they are facing. It makes encounter descriptions a breeze because I just set up the pawns and tell the players "this is what you see"!

You can't beat this selection for the price. Take your game to the next level. This first set is indispensable and will be the only monster box you'll need for a while!

Yeah, I've been using the business card holders for mine. They work great for the medium and large, but the smalls slip and slide around. Right now I have a strip of wide masking tape down the middle of each page to seal off the openings. So far its worked ok, but I'd love a better way to store the small/tiny pawns.

I just got my Bestiary Box and I think it's great.

I know some of the Adventure Paths are getting pawns but does anyone know if there are going to be sets detailing various monster groups (i.e: Goblins, orcs, gnolls, etc, etc), the paper minis had some sets like this, I know I would buy specific monster sets.

Either way this Pathfinder Pawn thing is a case of "shut up and take my money" for me.

Game on.

So, does anyone know if this sold/or is selling well enough to warrent sets for Bestiary 2 and Bestiary 3?

The business card/photo holder idea works wonders for storing pawns. I've got the entire collection in a pair of 3" binders.

Stick the larger pawns in front of the small ones. They should help keep the small ones from falling out.

Shadow Lodge

Actually I just ordered a set of coin holder pages (42 pockets per page). They're perfectly sized for the small pawns, and they even have flaps to help keep them from falling out.

What kind of coin holders do you use?

Or more properly can you provide a link to where you buy yours? The only 42/page coin holder i can find is on ebay.

That's awesome news, Liz! Thanks!

Got my two boxes in the mail about a week ago and LOVE them! We're gearing up for our annual Pathfinder game in January and digging that we'll be seeing more pawns before then. Thanks Paizo!

Unfortunately, that's the only place I was able to find them as well.

I love my Bestiary Box (enough to buy a second one :) ).

However, it says Kobold (4) on the back, and I'm willing to swear there are only (3).

Can anyone else confirm this... or deny it?

I've just taken a look at the PDF. There are, indeed, only three Kobold Warrior pawns, although the inventory does say there are four. Good catch!

Contributor

This is correct—there are only three Kobold Warrior pawns. I've updated the product description to match accordingly.

Thank you John and Liz.

Next time I need to check my pdf copy before i spend 30 minutes on the floor trying to find the pawn i *must* have dropped. :)

I'll apologize in advance if this question (or a very similar question) was already asked and answered (at 9 pages I was to intimidated to read through them all).

Okay, so on to my question ... I recently subscribed to the Pawns Sub (starting with Runelords actually) but would like to get the Bestiary Box at some point ... since I am a subscriber, does that mean I'll get the PDF of the Bestiary Box if I order the BB itself?

Mostly curious here on this one, I have a master summoner player and he has a fondness for summoning eagles ... right now I use small air mephits to "represent" the eagles. Being able to have the "hardcopy" as well as access to the PDF to print multiples would be nice.

Thanks in advance for any answers you can provide.

Dean

EDIT: Hmm ... reading the product description seems to confirm that I will have access to (i.e. "receive") the PDF as well as the BB itself when I order the Bestiary Box (as I have an active pawns sub).

But ... can someone just confirm my thinking on this.

Appreciate it. :)

I don't think so. I believe the free PDFs are only part of the deal if you pre-order the product; regular orders (placed after the product is shipping) don't qualify.

I someone forgives me for asking without reading all 400+ posts at this point.

Why is this PDF $25?
Does the fact that it is mostly art explain?
Is there actually any new art?
Does Paizo pay art royalties instead of just flat out purchasing?

1)Paizo's standard PDF price is approx. 70% of the printed copy's price.

2&3)There is some new art in the product, and some is straight from the Bestiary book.
4)Not sure, but I'd assume they purchase rights rather than royalties due to the number of times they re-use the artwork.

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Starfinder Adventure Path Subscriber

Hey there someone on the inside of Paizo, have you considered the possibility of a "booster" pack of the bases for the pawns. Something like (5) small, medium, large, and/or huge bases in a pack? It sure is something I'd be interested in, and maybe others as well.

Well ... I guess that's that. (I'll let you mull that idea over and see what you and the "powers that be" think of it).

Dean

You can buy additional bases separately - just ordered mine the other day

Contributor

Correct - here are the links for the Huge, Large, and Medium bases.

@ Liz Courts and Geo Fix ... oooohh thanks a bunch ... that is good to know and a darn good price (in my opinion). Now ... I just need to settle my finances. :(

Okay so we have Rise of the Rune Lords AP pawns and we're getting Shattered Star and Skull and Shackles APs soon. When are the other APs gonna get some love?

Actually I am just kidding, you guys and gals at Paizo are doing a great job. Keep it up!

Seriously though, any plans to do pawns for the older paths? We're halfway through RotRL and I plan to run CotCT next, and the rest in order.

Oh I already know about the Skull & Shackles AP, Bud. :-) I can't speak for ghettowedge but for me, I was just kidding around. Paizo can release the pawns in any order that they want, they'll ALL eventually see use in my campaigns!

We have a lot of work to do just to stay on top of the current APs. Retroactive APs, creature type packs, etc. are honestly a good ways down the road from here. The better these do, the faster that road gets, of course.

As I said Mr.Mona, they will ALL see use in my games! So do it however you want to do it!

My Bestiary Box arrived the other day. 1) Solid box! 2) HEAVY! 3) Seriously good components. Heavy card, well-punched, no tearing like I've had with some punch-card game components. Once I'd taken everything out and unpunched all the pawns I had a hard time getting everything back in the box!

My only complaint (and it's minor, at best) is that the artwork goes over the edges of the pawn in some cases - a spider knee here, the tip of a wing there. Could you not have resized everything to fit on the pawn properly?

Ordered the Runelords pawns about ten minutes after opening this box.

Any chance of making the PC Pawns from the beginner's box available to those of us who don't have it? (Or those of us who - checks to make sure no-one's eavesdropping - don't play Pathfinder?)

Don't play?... Don't play?!?! BURN THE HEATHEN! :)
On a more relevent point, 2 questions.
What weight cardstock is used for this product? I will be printing off a pdf soon.
And is there a future for gargantuan and colossal creatures as pawns? Since I haven't seen the product yet, I don't know how much of the page a huge creature takes.

Is the PDF version still cardboard cut-outs, or would they be printed and then cut? Any help is appreciated, I am wanting to know if it is actually worth it!

i love this pawns, sadly im still waiting the Carrion Crown pawns!!

We may go back and do some Pawn sets for some of the older Adventure Paths (though we haven't announced any at the moment).

I see that amazon.co.uk have run out of this.

Is there a limited print run on this item (and has it run out) or do I just need to wait.

Richard

Amazon should be able to buy it from their distributor. We still have stock.

Dark Archive

I wonder how they restock this.

As you see here:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pathfinder-Roleplaying-Game-Bestiary-Box/dp/1601254 245/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2S1JCSGNALPDX&coliid=I3G8 L3JSN7E28S

It's not there - and I don't want to pay £40+ for it.

P.S. Actually, it looks like everyone here in the uk is out of stock - on line, at least.

I believe that every vendor in the UK takes their Paizo stock from Esdevium, so if Esdevium is out, everybody is out.

It's unclear to me if Amazon UK buys from Esdevium or not. I'll see what I can find out.

We're pretty sure that *all* of the Amazon locations buy from Diamond. We'll tell Diamond to tell them to order more!

D'oh. My bad. We actually have low enough stock that we've put distribution orders on hold.

I love the pawn products. However, I am making a suggestion for future printings. It may be in the works or suggested before.
Consider placing the Creature type icons near the name. This would aid greatly in storing/sorting my pawns. Perhaps as a retroactive product you could offer small sticker icon sheets for the older ones. I know I would buy those. Thanks

I think you are wrong, it would sell a lot better than you think. Also, with blanks being available, it would also increase the sales of the PDFs. Now there would actually be a good reason to purchase them. I for one know that I would do exactly that.

We've sold out of the first print run of the Bestiary Box. We're now taking backorders to be fulfilled with the second print run, which should be arriving in a couple of weeks.

The pawns themselves have not changed, though the box now has the Pathfinder Pawns logo instead of the Pathfinder RPG logo, and we've corrected the token list on the back—the first printing erroneously said there were 4 Kobold Warrior tokens, but there have always been only 3. It also has a new ISBN, product code, and price.

Has anyone printed these from pdf? What are you printing onto / using for backing material. I have some 22pt chipboard I'm going to try for backing stock and printing onto 110 lb cardstock.

Also, has anyone messed around with resizing the minis? It irks me having the 4 foot dwarf the same height as the 6 foot elf. I also liked the idea of adding the monster type icons.
