Pathfinder Society: Year 5 Announcement

Thursday, May 4, 2023

On a bright, sunny day a Polynesian-inspired dinghy pulls up to an island with a waterfall on the left and mountains in the distance. Behind the waterfall, there's a subtle sillhouette of a woman. The ocean surrounding the island is a comforting aqua blue. Taiwalei, a human Pathfinder, faces the viewer, excitedly beckoning toward the island, smiling and eager for the adventure ahead

After a year of wonder, of treachery, of new plots and puzzles, the Pathfinder Society emerges victorious over one of their oldest, cleverest enemies. The Society is free to look to the future and see what new adventures Golarion and beyond has in store for them! With open hands and arms, the Pathfinder Society calls upon all its agents to remember their roots. Explore! Report! Cooperate!

Behind the waterfall sits an old friend, ready and waiting for the right time to make their move.

Welcome to the Year of Unfettered Exploration!

The silver waterfall helm tilts backward, revealing the Glyph of the Open Road constellation within

There are ten Pathfinder Society Scenarios that influence the Year of Unfettered Exploration’s metaplots, and each will be marked with a special metaplot icon on the cover. More information about both metaplots, as well as upcoming locations and characters, will be revealed during the News from Organized Play panel at PaizoCon 2023!

The Year of Unfettered Exploration’s first metaplot kicks off with Pathfinder Society Intro: Year of Unfettered Exploration, an adventure for 1st- to 4th-level characters written by Sen H.H.S. This interplanar scenario takes place during a relaxing celebration at the Grand Lodge in Absalom. This scenario debuts at Gen Con 2023 with one other Pathfinder Society Scenario.

This upcoming year is all about finding new adventures, making new friends, and discovering parts of Golarion and beyond that have yet to be seen by the Pathfinder Society!

Firsties!! AND INTERPLANAR?! I am so excited to see this season come out.

If I can find an online game with my timetable I might actually be able to join in from a level 1 game, that would be sick :>

Great name for Season 5!

I am hoping that means that something bad has happened to one of the Decemvirate ^^ and that we now get to use their obscure hat for something.

This might be the thing to get me into Society! Are those folks in the art Taotake?

Approximately 50% of year 4 adventures were mets-plot ones. If we're getting 10 meta-plot adventures in years 5 could that mean that there will be more adventures in the year?

As long as we can play it online somehow (vtt, pbp), sounds awesome!

Come join us, Keftiu! I will GM for you if it will get you into Society play.

I am totally psyched for a 'relaxed' interplanar journey! Unfettered exploration sounds great! Maybe we'll finally be able to free the remaining good-aligned elemental deities.

The Exchange 2/5 **** Venture-Agent, New Hampshire—Nashua

Whoa wait you mean the Society won?! Man, that felt like an easy bet too.

I love how each season is spring boarding off of the previous one. Very cool stuff!

I would love to know how many of each tier the 10 scenarios are. Just to see if they can be played with one character.

I'm pretty sure they *could* all be played with one character, but not without playing a lot of other stuff as well.
(Note, too, that this would almost certainly require playing the scenarios in something other than the order of their release)

If past patterns hold, and I'm simply speculating here, any discounts or removals of costs for specific ancestry access would probably happen *after* the season and not before. The Remaster might change that sooner/faster, but, again, pure speculation.

There's a chance I take you up on that! All of my attempts to play PF2 have met with improbably mifortune.

The toughest question at that point is who to play as...

Well, let's talk about this later. I'd love to GM something for you in PBP (though I could also do a primitive google slides VTT.)

So the event list for Gen Con is up and there are four listings for the special. They all have levels 1-2 in the title but one of them has levels 7-8 in the description. Are the others meant to be for different levels?

Woo.

I see we're already set with 10 metaplot scenarios, but it feels a little much to me if we're getting under 20 total scenarios for the season.

One of the strengths of orgwnized play is its episodic nature and this high % of meta plot feels like its erroding away at that a bit.

That said, I love connections and the occasional 2 parter and all meta all the time isn't a deal breaker, Im just whatever the opposite of excited is.

With them moving into Player Core 2, I'm excited about that as well... but anyone starting Society has 80 free AcP to start with, which is enough to roll two Iruxi PCs!

Do you have any recommended adventures to play at Gencon for people new to PFS2e? Thanks to adventure paths, my group will have 5th level and 1st level characters to play with, and are trying to put a schedule together that maximizes our PFS experience

I recommend this year's intro (Intro: Year of Unfettered Exploration) for all new Society players! Beyond that, it depends what you're looking for from an adventure, but the Dacilane Academy series is a fan favorite and the third installment is releasing at the show.

In addition to what Alex said, any 3-6 adventure that isn't a metaplot adventure will also be fine to use the level 5s. Most society scenarios are fairly standalone and call-backs to previous adventures, while existing, often are there as easter eggs for players are not something necessary for enjoyment of the scenarios. Society itself, other than the episodic nature, plays just like normal PF2 Adventure Path play so you should feel right at home.

Voicing support for this. The episodic nature is the prime attractor as an alternative for AP play. I struggle to get new players invested when I have to explain half an AP's worth of plot to get them to play a 4 hour session.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate and acknowledge the work that goes into this, but it's a detractor to OP.

Just a gentle reminder that we haven't announced how many scenarios there will be this year, nor have we actually released any of the Unfettered Exploration metaplot scenarios.

Y'all's apprehension and concern is noted, however I'd like to politely ask that we refrain from making assumptions about the season before the season even begins. I've done a lot of work with the other members of the Organized Play team to ensure that the Year of Unfettered Exploration will have something for everyone.

That sounds great, Shay! I do enjoy mini-arcs and call backs, and I think that this last year had an excellent mix of stand alone with meta-plot. I can't wait to see what we get next.

Hmm

My apologies, my post was based on the info in this blog and looking back at the last 2 seasons. I agree it's unfair to guess at the upcoming season scenario count when I know there's been efforts to increase it, but logistics are frequently a terrifying nightmare.

It'll sure be nice if the scenario count goes back up without any of you burning out.

I did notice 5-04 mentioning an Equal Exchanges Meta-Plot with 4 total scenarios.

I have hopes that 2+ smaller metaplots feel like a better mix to me.

I'll be sure to share my thoughts again after the season is underway.

I believe it is a 'starry' open road symbol in something like Vecna's crown. aye, that came in handy

Just played the 4th scenario today. Wondering what the humanoid weasel creatures were
