Quests are Back!

Thursday, December 8, 2022

Greetings Pathfinders!

I’m excited to announce that we’ve decided to bring back a bit of a blast from the past: Pathfinder Quests!

Society members gathered around a game table

Our Pathfinder Bounties have served the purpose of short, standalone adventures since 2020. With 2023 on the horizon, however, we’ve decided that a product with a bit more length would give you all more of what you want. What that means for all of you is that, rather than new Pathfinder Bounties, you’ll soon be getting new Quests, each designed to take around two hours. (Intrepid Starfinders, you’ll still get new Starfinder Bounties, though). This will allow us to give the adventures more in-depth stories while still giving you something that can be played under strict time constraints.

The biggest difference is that Quests will be tied more deeply into Pathfinder Society than Bounties, and much like Pathfinder Society Scenarios will assume your PCs are all Pathfinders. They will reward half as much credit as a scenario—2 XP, 5 treasure bundles, and 2 reputation. Quests will have level ranges similar to scenarios. For example, the first one we’re working on is for levels 1–4. It’s set to come out in April (and might involve an Aldori swordlord). In addition to that quest, we’re aiming to have two others out by the end of 2023.

I can’t wait to show you some of the ideas we’ve got in the works for these, and I hope you enjoy playing them as much as we enjoy working on them!

Wishing you all a great holiday season!

This is awesome! I can't wait!!! I'm looking forward to both playing and running them.

Wonderful! I will be collecting all of these- this is exactly what my group eats up!

This is exciting news!

I started using Quests & Bounties a few years ago as introductory PC stories where the setting & NPCs are redressed to reflect whatever Deep Background-type stuff my players give me so the players gets to actually play out parts of their Deep Background.

This way, every player enters an AP better able to intuit who they are without all the new character awkwardness that AP #1 volumes bring.

Quest/Bounty-as-Prologue makes me a happy GM and my table less awkward.

This is excellent news. The variable level ranges for low level games is my biggest draw to quests and I am excited to get new ones.

I really liked the "Bounties" for our group, on off weeks or if to many were missing I could fill a 3 hour spot quickly. I guess maybe we roleplay a lot and maybe do combat slower but the "Bounty" fit the need. I am hoping the quest will still work.

Awesome! Looking forward to the first one!

Woooot! That will make planning characters more easy, and help those of us who happen to have a single bounty on a character reach an even level of XP more easily. I can now grab one of the repeatable 1 hour quests and then one of these 2 hour ones, and fix my uneven XP, even if I am past Level 3!

So a few questions:

QUESTION ONE: Will there be any name differentiation between the new 2 hour quests and the older one hour quests (like Port Peril's Pub Crawl)? I am hoping that the answer to this will be 'Yes'.

QUESTION TWO: Josh, are you new? If so, welcome!

Throws Confetti at Josh. Then just tosses confetti around the whole area, so that the other devs do not feel left out.

QUESTION THREE: Alex, can we have a blog introducing or re-introducing the current Org Play dev team? I'd like to learn more about Shay and Josh, and would love of course to hear more about You, Jessica and the Uber Leshy and anyone else under the banner that I might have missed.

Hmm

Trusty rolls in, and starts sweeping. "What is it with people these days throwing confetti around? Sheesh, clean up after yourselves."

1) Nope, we'll be starting at Quest 14. They will have a different cover & layout treatment to differentiate them.

3) Tune in tomorrow for a blog I'm not in (but that the rest of the team is)!

Alex already got the others out of the way, but I am indeed new! And I appreciate the warm welcome. I'll leave my full introduction for the one I wrote up in tomorrow's blog.

Well, I'm looking forward to tomorrow's blog, then! Welcome once again. I'd throw more confetti, but I don't want to get on Trusty's bad side.

QUESTION FOUR: Will these quests be repeatable, the way bounties were?

Hmm

I look at the evolution of quests from what they began as back in PF1.

It used to be some replayable small one off that started as a one time running at a convention. Then repeatable quest started to come into the fold for low levels (mostly 1st level characters).

We have a few scenarios that consist of four quests put together as a themed bunch, and then had the quest packs with six quests that could be repeated and run together or separately.

Then PF2 came in with "Quests" that, at the beginning, had the repeatable tag, but soon we got some quests that, for the first time, was not repeatable. These began at 1-4 tier and then we had 3-6 tiered quest released.

I appreciate the return of Quests, and the return of having them connected with the Pathfinder Society.

My question is if there are going to be some with the Repeatable tag. With the AP's and other materials outside of the Scenarios having to be played outside of the organized play structure (and retro rewarded with lesser chronicles), there is a limited number of material to actually play our characters in PFS, carbon copies not withstanding.

I still can't believe there is a quest that is not repeatable. Blows my mind.

The plan is that all will be repeatable. I checked with the others in Org Play just to be sure, and we all agree that repeatable quests are the best quests.

I understand completely, given the nature of quests and the role they can play in brining in new players. I just answered a similar question from Hilary, but since you went so in depth with your question, I want to specifically say that I agree. Which is why we're going with repeatable quests.

QUESTION FIVE: Will there be any more bounties published before Quests start on April 2023, or will there be a slight gap where we need to reuse the bounties and quests we already have?

For those that may not know, Bounties are categorized as Standalone Adventures. I believe Pathfinder Bounty #21: Against the Unliving is the last, and releases this month. The Quests are true Organized Play products. The next is in April as the blog says. There will be a gap. There are many sanctioned adventures of various lengths in the Standalone Adventures category. Crown of the Kobold King might be great to play in small bites for 18 weeks?

3 quests in the year starting in April is by my math about 1 quest every 4 months.

Happy to see them, especially in their new form, disappointed by the slow production schedule.

Any thoughts about maybe making the older quests repeatable as well....

Those quests might just be perfect in length for my home group, so I'm quite excited about that announcement. :)

Does this mean we will not be seeing any more Bounties at all, or that they will be interspersed with Quests?

Alex answered that question here/ They are ending the bounty line for the moment in favor of the new 2 hour quests.

Maybe! We'll see how these first ones go over, both in terms of sales and play numbers. If they do well we'll look at expanding them.

In general, I don't think we have any intention of retroactively making any products repeatable.

A'aron (sorry had to! Lolol), it is difficult for those scheduling to get a consistent group of players over 18 weeks. So while I appreciate the comment, from my stand point, it is not practical.

Maybe i missed it, will these be available on VTT as well? If so that would make it even more flexible for scattered RPG groups.

Wayfinders 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 **** Contributor

Every adventure can be done for VTT. However, your question may be whether Paizo will be working with partners to publish adapted versions for Foundry, etc. Hopefully Aaron will be by to answer that soon.

Silver Crusade 3/5 5/55/5 *** Venture-Agent, New Zealand—Auckland

Yay. More content for levels 1-4 - and repeatable too. That'll help get those PCs stuck in those levels going again.

Incidentally, the picture looks like a bunch of Starfinders playing Quest for Lost Golarion

((There must be Fantasy RPGs in Starfinder - if there isn't, there should be))

I was hoping that it would be a Paizo / Partner (Foundry or fantasy grounds) that would release together or in close conjunction with each other. I do prefer in person play but, i have found that in order to maintain regularity i have to be able to transition between VTT & Tabletop. And since i work just as crazy hours as the rest of the folks i play with, it would be a huge help to have as little setup as possible for the VTT side.

This is good news! Excited to see what gets made.

If so, two of them are cosplaying.

(The ones directly to the left and right of the GM are PF characters. Sorrina Westyr and Eando Kline(?not sure on that one?)

But since the DM is literally a Deity of games, she can probably have whoever she wants at her table whenever she wants.

The best part of this is that they will reward prestige. That's the one thing I didn't like about running bounties.

Bounties are not undertaken for the Pathfinder Society. They're side jobs you do in-between missions. At least, that's what I was told. I guess I was told wrong, though.

Will the old Season 1 Quests offer 2 XP, 5 treasure bundles, and 2 reputation when the new ones are released?

Or, gods forbid, there a plan to retire the old Quests?

Neither. The old Quests will remain exactly as they are.
