Announcing Pathfinder Nexus - Unleash Your Hero Digitally!

Tuesday, October 26, 2021

We’re pleased to announce Paizo’s new partnership with Demiplane to create Pathfinder Nexus, an official digital toolset for Pathfinder Second Edition! Pathfinder Nexus aims to make every part of playing game sessions better, starting with sought-after tools like a game compendium, digital reader, character builder, and interactive digital character sheet, as well as a playspace with video chat that seamlessly integrates all the other tools. Demiplane has an extensive roadmap for Pathfinder Nexus, with new features to enhance play planned for years to come.

Pathfinder Nexus is set to release in early 2022. Visit www.PathfinderNexus.com to register an account, dive into the free Pathfinder Primer, or pre-order additional Pathfinder content for early access to the content in the digital reader and compendium, with more to come between now and the Pathfinder Nexus launch.

Join the discussion in the Demiplane Forums to share your feedback to help shape the future of Pathfinder Nexus. To stay informed on latest updates, follow Demiplane on Twitter (@DemiplaneRPG) or tune in to weekly Development Updates on Demiplane’s Twitch channel.

Looks fantastic. Will likely dive into it if we see forward motion on the Transphobia and Doxxing issues addressed with real acknowledgements and answers.

Love that the Union is being recognized and not cancelling my current subs because of that as of now. But it looks like to dive into this I will likely have to re buy a lot of content I already have across multiple platforms?

If you own a Paizo PDF, Paizo Connect will give you discounts on the Pathfinder Nexus products. If you buy a product on Pathfinder Nexus you will get the PDF for free. If you own the PDF you get discounts with other partners who choose to use Paizo Connect.

If you've already got the PDF for a book that you want the Nexus version of, through Paizo Connect, you can get the price of the PDF taken off the Nexus price, so you're just paying for the Nexus upgrade.

Conversely, if you but something on Nexus that you don't already own on PDF and your accounts are linked via Paizo Connect, you'll get the PDF added to your paizo.com downloads.

Yup, seeing this. Linked my account the same way I did for Fantasy Grounds and the discount appears to be about the same.

Still 20 bucks per book to add it to the account though so it is another investment being asked on a start up platform.

Definitely see the potential of this, love the look of it. Once I see how the Character and Campaign management works there is a high likelyhood I will buy into it. But it is another instance of buying another version of a book I already own 2-3 times from other sources.

How is this useful at all? Rebuying content in different formats is CURSE. There should be no extra cost over something like this if people have already bought it digitally directly.

Are you axing PDFs? That'd be bad move.

Are you axing your relationship with AON? That'd be a bad move.

Playing with the Adventure Portal Now.

Not sure how/if it can have map and movement be built into it like Fantasy Grounds but the chat/vid is nice and has built in dice rollers with access to your library.

This is actually quite an impressive product they are producing.

Well, Demiplane needs to pay their employees that make the website/apps, so yeah. I think it's reasonable.

This is made by another company, Demiplane. And Demiplane needs to pay their employees, and probably the license fees to use Paizo's stuff. So there needs to be some income somewhere.

Cool story. Did I say it was unreasonable? I said it was an ask for an investment in a new platform.

So Paizo needs to finish what they announced (did they ever work on it?) of releasing their stuff directly themselves, tool-agnostically. They said they were going to start including HQ images for VTT use in maps and Pawns. The next step is including appropriately-formated portable files alongside the PDFs so people can import into their preferred VTT, or an open API to confirm ownership on all the various platforms, rather than making cross-listing partnerships with every fly-by-night VTT tool out there.

Regarding "this is made by another company", lots of companies are duplicating, triplicating, reduplicating effort wastefully with situations like this.

It all looks cool, but I need to understand better what this is giving me that I don't already get through Nethys and HeroLab Online. I've invested a lot in HeroLab already so it would be hard to rebuy a bunch of books.

Yeah, It's deeply frustrating and price prohibitive to have the official online platform for pathfinder content be so expensive for content users already own. On top of that, the fact that there isn't even a discount offered if you only purchased a physical rulebook instead of the PDF is just shafting the players and GMs who like having a physical book to reference but still use digital tools for their games.

As someone who has been buying physical rulebooks since the launch of PF2E, I and I imagine a lot of others have spent a significant amount of money to support all the amazing content Paizo has released for this system. On top of that, many of us have then spent that money all over again in order to get access to that content through sites like HeroLab. To have Paizo announce PathfinderNexus as the "official digital toolset of Pathfinder Second Edition" but force the people who have been supporting this system for a long time to have to rebuy in for every single piece of content is, in my eyes an egregious error.

It would be one thing if the cost for already owned sources was closer to $5-10. I get that there is labor that goes into converting these books into a usable format in Demiplane and ensuring all the rules and options contained in these books are integrated into the digital toolset being offered. There can certainly be a price attached to these items to ensure that the people doing that work are getting paid fair wages, but asking people to spend over $100 for content they already own is just a bit ridiculous.

I am looking forward to seeing where this is going. I have not been impressed with Hero Lab...hopefully this tool set will up the game. I am curious re the ability (or lack thereof) to add customer content (which has been a huge issue for HL).

You've got it. Pathfinder Nexus is made by some of the same people who made D&D Beyond. Pathfinder Nexus from Demiplane will provide video and voice chat, shared journaling, matchmaking, and much more to come. So you can use it rather than Discord if you like. No announcements about a virtual tabletop at this time.

Is there any digital toolsets that offer a discount for just owning the physical copy but not the PDF?

Yes, I would be extremely enthusiastic if this were built on Hero Lab, and all of my already-re-purchased content were suddenly becoming more useful. As it is, I'm very intrigued to see where it goes. I wish it well, but am not sure how deeply I'll get into it. There are a couple of books I own only in print format, and I might buy the digital content for those (and then get the PDF access), to explore the functionality and give it a chance.

In the abstract, it seems like this further incentivizes a shift away from paper products, making them a luxury that we soon can't afford. Given that the Pathfinder subscribers would seem to be a strong core audience, they're now in the position of paying for the paper books, getting the PDF for free, and then having to pay another $20 for each content if Nexus proves valuable. At that point, they might as well drop their subscription, buy it in Nexus for the digital tools, and get the PDF for free.

Given increases in shipping costs and delays, I almost wonder if this isn't a feature instead of a bug from the business perspective.

I was referencing physical copies purchased directly through the Paizo webstore. So the purchase is directly connected to the Paizo account being linked to Demiplane.

Obviously its a separate issue if buying physical books through online retailers like amazon or at your local game store, but if the purchase is connected to your Paizo account there's honestly no good reason to not get a discount when being asked to repurchase the source through Demiplane.

Well, at least I've got until early 2022 to think about this.

But my first impression is that a lot of our players have already paid multiple times for the same content (physical products and/or PDFs from Paizo, integration with HeroLab, Roll20, etc., etc.), and have become used to a particular style of play for their online gaming.

Expecting them to pay yet again for yet another product format is going to be a hard sell.

And, quite honestly, I really dislike one of the concepts that demiplane seem to push as a feature - the ability for players to rate (and even reward) GMs and other players.

Each partner using Paizo Connect gets to set their own discount levels, and those discounts won't always be for the full cost of the PDF.

It's too late for me to edit my original post, but it should say that you'll get a discount if you own the PDF, not that the full cost of the PDF will be discounted. Sorry for the miscommunication.

Oh dear... that's... not good at ALL. Maybe we should write to them to seek clarity or appeal to scrap this proposed feature set because that has immense potential for harassment, especially if users are EVER able to "look up" other people in the service.

Yeah, I would never play random games with people if there was a public rating system. Alias or otherwise. If someone doesn't want to play with someone then don't play with them. Just because you/I had a bad experience doesn't mean that someone else wouldn't have a fantastic time with them and they should be ousted from all future sessions based on a social score.

People tend to remember to leave negative feedback and not the positive.

Given that this is a separate tool that provides more features on top of the existing product, it is perfectly reasonable that they are charging their own money for books that we own.

I do think they're overselling themselves a bit with just how "sought-after" the toolset is, given that we already have almost all of those things either built by the community, integrated into existing VTTs, or both, just minus the official artwork in places because CUP. Not to say this isn't cool, just...acknowledge what it actually is instead of saying the community hasn't accomplished as much as it has, lol.

But hey, D&DBeyond is popular, and I hope this makes Paizo money.

I'm only holding off for now because I'm concerned about the security of the app. Having all of those password requirements beyond the 8 character minimum is widely known to not help, and any system that can't handle hashing a sublist of special characters is inherently suspicious. I don't feel comfortable giving them account info between those two things.

At the very least, glad to see that Paizo is seeing the value of investing into digital tools like this. Hope that continues, and the service continues to improve. Looking forward to seeing what the final launch of this is like in 2022.

As someone who exclusively GMs on VTTs, this essentially does nothing for me. I was going to grab an AP volume just to test it out, but the markup through Demiplane is too high for experimentation.

I cannot imagine being a subscriber wanting to make use of this service and having to pay an extra 20 bucks on top of everything I'm already paying for if I want to use it. Is there any intent to integrate Paizo subscriptions through Nexus?

Being a subscriber for a line of books here on Paizo gets you the physical books, and the PDF as a free bonus. This service provides a noticeable number of extra features on top of that. I personally feel that those extra features already exist pretty efficiently within the community, but an official version with a more professional UI could be cool.

While I have reasons for not signing up for Nexus, them asking for money to pay their staff for what they've built is not one of them.

EDIT:

Hello there, Adam from Demiplane here. This isn't accurate about how using Demiplane's adventure portal "ratings" work. There are multiple protections in place and no negative feedback is displayed anywhere. It is more like "achievements" in something like Overwatch.
