Meet the Iconics—The Red Raven

Ho there, stranger! If you're lookin' for shelter on a cold night like tonight, you could do a lot better than that cursed Ledinthorp estate you were prowling 'round. Come 'long. My daughters married and moved out ages ago—means we got a spare bed for a traveler who doesn't know how to stay out of trouble when there're Gray Gardeners keeping the peace.

You even know whose ruined home you were in? That once belonged to the old Ledinthorp clan. They played at being dukes and earls until the Revolution swept through in '67 and lopped off their heads! I hear the nursemaid smuggled out the duke's heirs before the mobs set fire to the place and made dresses out of the swanky curtains. Nobody's had a mind to fix it up, and the only reason anyone goes there now is to look for the inheritance the duke supposedly hid in the walls. Course, if there's any justice in the world, the Red Raven's found it long since and given it out to help feed starving mouths in these tryin' times.

What's that, stranger? Never heard of the Red Raven? That's a right shame, and something of a surprise for folk 'round here. He's famous—a hometown hero! Now I admit a lot of cities get to make that claim, but 'round here it's true. He was born a common man to a couple down on Razor Street. Some even say that he's the lost son of Darl Jubbanich, which would make the Red Raven the child of Liberty itself, raised by the common folk! But those were hard times; we were struggling with starvation inflicted by Galt's hungry neighbors, and the dark legacy of those traitorous aristocrats still strangled our lands. Even so, he fed on the freedom of a liberated nation—that part's exaggeration, mind, but it's how the story goes—and grew up strong, proud, and gallant. And handsome! You'd believe me if you saw him. My, if I was forty years younger…

Oh, don't give that look! At my age you're allowed to speak your mind. Now, where was I?

Just about everyone 'round here's seen the Red Raven from down the street or across the square as he pursues brigands and traitors. I'm lucky to have seen him eight times, myself. Why, he flies 'cross the shingles as if his cape were feathers, soaring on wings of grandeur stained by the blood of them rotten nobles. The glow of old Galt's torches'n'pitchforks can't compare to that righteous hellfire smoldering in his eyes, hotter'n Asmodeus's summer sweat! Course, what would you expect from someone whose passion for justice ignited from the sparks that flew from the first final blade? You know how our final blades all have ladies' names? That's 'cause they're the only wives the Red Raven takes, and hardly a night goes by that he doesn't bring home some bloody present for the missus. Har har!

Aww, loosen up, stranger. Jokin' aside, my youngest, Anjerille, she was at a festival when the Red Raven dropped into the crowd and picked out a villain—said he could sniff out nobles by night just by following the stench of their perfumes. Oh, you laugh. I did too, but only a month later we learned that he has eyes so sharp that he can tell the difference between a cobbler and a count from three streets away with only a crescent moon for light. Now, my eldest, Redarra, is known to tell some tall tales, but given what else I've seen, I half take it as truth when she says he can taste a man's bloodline back ten generations from just a single drop.

Who is he really? Anyone you ask will give a different answer. Some think he's a common bandit turned good. Others say he's a reformed noble seeking redemption. Me? I say he's everyone in Edme, for we're all willing to watch for aristocrats who think that after half a century it's finally safe to return to Galt. Aristocrats who would sneak around a burned-down estate and walk away with a bag of jewels, like the one I fancy you're carryin' now. Blue-bloods with a face like yours—the same as old Duke Ledinthorp's, whose head I watched tumble from Razor Jenni's blade so long ago. The son of a dead dynasty like yours, scavengin' what rightly belongs to the people of Galt. Who's the Red Raven? He's everyone we've passed tonight. He's every set of eyes that's seen us walking together. He's the footsteps you hear patterin' across the rooftops, fast as the heart of man who's got only an hour left to live.

Best get runnin' Your Excellency. The Red Raven knows you're here.

So, uh, where has he showed up before? Everyone seems familiar with him already, and I'm completely clueless :P

Same guy.

Oh, that should be fun for players who haven't played Eyes of the Ten yet.

"Hey there Red Raven, remember when we were both level 1 and kicking around together. What have you been up to since?"

Personally, I think it's about time there's finally an Evil iconic.

Well, he wouldn't be the first. Both Seltyiel the magus and Meligaster the mesmerist are evil. LE and NE, respectively.

Okay, the more I think about the potential for strange, possibly anachronistic, shenanigans that can be achieved with this iconic in PFS the more I am warming up to the idea of how awesome this iconic is.

Wishlist for future iconics/pregens, GMT.

First, I'm not sure this guy is evil.

Second, apart from Seltyiel and Megalister, there are the new iconics that are all evil from the Hell's Vengeance AP. Paizo have introduced three already - a Tiefling, a Female Hellknight and the other one with the...rather interesting headwear. There are three more to come...

Hold up, the Vigilante technically has 2 alignments based on what identity he is using and seeing as the original Red Raven is a CN Rogue it is possible that this version has a CN identity and a CG identity.

I have to say, compared to the Red Raven artwork we've seen before, I prefer the new design/costume for the simple reason that it does a much better job of concealing the wearer's face.

And how would he know that?

Well this is simple, Batman is LN and so the same is this guy.

I've heard a similar theory, though it involved the Red Raven being a pair of gnomes in a fancy crime-fighting outfit. Said trustworthy source also assured me that Norgorber is just an ambitious trio of halflings wearing a heavy cloak. Sounds legit.

Here I thought it was 4 of them there Halflings, one of 'em named Thamir or somethin'.

So I'm thinking Paizo now has a perfectly good excuse to do another comic book mini series. :-)

Batman is a f*+~ing Paladin! And that is that.

Unless you wanna tip cows over it... dibs on Ethel!

Preeeeety sure Batman's CG :P Though honestly, that's not a joke.

Anyway, the Red Raven's giving me a CN vibe. I could see maybe CG, but I'm definitley leaning towards CN.

Batman doesn't bring people explicitly to the guillotine. Guillotines that eat souls, to boot. And for no better reason than they *may* be related to someone.

Why does everyone keep bringing up Batman? Zorro, is who Batman was based on. Red Raven and Galt, Zorro and California.

We do not have anywhere near enough reliable narrative from this blog to judge the Red Raven's actual alignment.

Also, the art is swag.

It warms the cockles of my heart to have my lovely home-state compared to Galt. Does that make Governor Brown our Citizen Goss, and our State Senate the Cabinet of Skulls? Thank Desna it's an election year!

Also, it looks like the Red Raven has gained quite a bit of weight since we last saw him, in addition to his wardrobe upgrade.

I'm totally looking forward to the Ultimate Campaign guide stage of Red Ravin's career when he retires and opens up a chain of Golarion-themed burger joints.

RED RAVIN! YUUUUMMMM!

I have a little bit of trouble taking the Red Raven seriously since my kitsune enchanter hit him with a dominate person in a certain PFS scenario, muahahaha...

I'm just more excited that this means that if the Iconic Heroes line keeps going, we'll have a Red Raven mini!

Me gusta.

Note the narrator's playing up the RR's bogeyman status.

I don't believe blog posts can be edited. That typo is going to be there forever.

But, yeah, no, they've fixed typos and such in blog entries before. They just have more pressing issues to deal with right now. *cough*HumbleBundle*cough*

Liberty's Edge

I like it!

And in Flight of the Red Raven, he's CN, so I think that's probably still his alignment. It makes sense to me if done that way.

Most Murderhobos are CN. To be honest, he exhibits a lot of Murderhobo behavior based on the introduction.

CN it is.

Still borderline Evil though...

Ledinthorp is the correct spelling. I've made a note to have the spelling adjusted in the second instance.

I personally like the entry of the Vigilante Iconic. I think it was well written, and even though it was a bit different than previous Meet the Iconics articles I enjoyed it once I understood the tone of the article. Nice job John Compton. I will second my enthusiasm for a Red Raven mini coming down the line.

I loved Flight of the Red Raven too.

I kind of planned to rewrite this character into my Kingmaker campaign (which never came to pass) as the "Green Raven", a female masked vigilante type protecting travelers and settlers, and who eventually be revealed to be Kisandra Numesti from Blood for Blood.
I planned to introduce Kisandra to the party at Oleg's at the start of the campaign just before she was to leave for Tatzlford. The plan was to have her show up periodically throughout the campaign as the mysterious Green Raven to help the party out of tight spots as needed, and to fuel rumors of a masked madwoman killing bandits and other menaces in the region. Later (in Blood for Blood) I would have her finally unmask herself out of necessity to the party while asking for their help against the incoming raid on Tatzlford.

I was just thinking it was time for our fourth monthly 'Meet the Iconics' evil dude for the latest AP, and this guy shows up!

I was totally expecting the Chelish inquisition, and 'swoosh' [sound of breaking glass, followed by classic superhero landing] in swoops the Red Raven!

My GM and a few players called him Red Robin in Eyes of the Ten. It made us hungry.

Here's the full write -up on the character design for the Red Raven.
It's already been posted onto my "Questions about Iconic Art" thread. Apologies for posting twice but I felt it was relevant to this thread also;

The Vigilante Iconic character was one of the more tricky ones to design.
The art description specified the character had two distinctive daggers and a whip.

My initial sketches had the character looking too much like the thugs from the cover of Guide to Absalom. I didn’t feel that a visual connection with a criminal gang was appropriate for a vigilante.

At this point I required further clarification of the character archetype with regards which direction to go. This character had to be a little bit more than just a swashbuckler wearing a mask but could neither be a spandex – wearing superhero. A hybrid of the two was necessary but the Iconic also had to fit in with Golorion world setting visual aesthetic too.

Creating a theme for the leather armour was an essential step in conceiving the overall look and feel to the character. Creating a theme would assist in distinguishing the character from the swashbuckler archetype. I’d also depicted many other Pathfinder characters wearing themed armour so it was essential to create something on par with established visuals.
Eventually, I’d decided to go for vandyked (Jagged) edges to his clothes and equipment. His mask was an extended hood. His armour had a lot of triangular and ‘V’shapes with lattice work to add texture. I’d created the daggers to resemble bird talons. The costume had a decidedly avian feel to it. The unexpected effect of the themed armour and mask now pushed the concept closer to the “Superhero” visual. I felt that it was necessary to bulk the armour up slightly to move the visuals away from something that would associate too closely to spandex.

Upon seeing the sketch, Erik suggested that the Vigilante should be the Red Raven.

This idea fit very well and focused the visual direction to move the design forward.
The vandyked hems and ‘V’ shapes were pretty close to feather shapes so that it was easy to incorporate those aspects into the design.
The lattice work was replaced with feathers and the shape of the cloak was created to resemble two bird wings.
The mask was given a more beak – like nose.
I’d not yet decided upon a colour scheme. Fortunately, the Red Raven concept suggested a combination of scarlet and black.
I was able to refine the clasps on the shoulder doublings into bird designs.
The belt buckle and whip bulb was made into a 3 - talon shape to coincide with the shape of the daggers.

The mask was always a problem. It went from looking like a hangman’s hood to looking close to Batman’s cowled mask.
Upon reflection I felt the superhero mask shape better helped the viewer to immediately associate the visuals with that of the Vigilante concept.

In terms of equipment, the Red Raven is fairly equipment – light for a Pathfinder concept.
He’s armed with a whip and two daggers.
I deliberately stayed away from adding a utility belt because it would be yet another visual connotation to a recognisable superhero. I wanted to keep those connections down to a minimum. Instead the Red Raven only has a single pouch to place any items that he may carry.

Red Raven is wearing two items that could associate him to his secret identity. - The necklace around his neck and the silk scarf on his left arm.
At least one of these items may have a significant relevance to the Red Raven’s origin story. However, that is yet to be revealed.

The concept sketches and design process will be uploaded to my Facebook page within the next few days.

Red Raven? I was hoping the iconic vigilante would be Jason's Gold Baron.

He robs from the poor to give to.the rich (himself)!
Ready to supress a peasant uprising with a single 'Surprise Reveal'!
He watches all from his hidden Vault of Solitude!

Hmmmm...a vigilante who sides with the Reign of Terror? Kills people just because they are aristocracy?! Wow. Not my type of vigilante. No problem with the art, just the character's bias.
Galt's nonsense and real-life stuff that mirror's it really gets my blood boiling. Can't help it.
