Gen Con 2016 Call for Volunteers!

Thursday, January 21, 2016

As we gear up for this year's convention season, it's time again to solicit volunteers!

Paizo is once again a co-sponsor of Gen Con 2016. As with last year, we will have a booth & card game demos in the Exhibition Hall, seminars in the Convention Center, and Pathfinder Society running in the Sagamore Ballroom.

Last year saw the culmination of several years' growth, during which Pathfinder Society at Gen Con expanded from a side room to all of the Sagamore Ballroom. While we aren't adding any space this year, we're changing up some of the programming. The Adventure Card Guild (ACG) will have 20 tables in its own area of the ballroom, where they are going to run Season of the Runelords. In addition, the ACG Open returns to test the mettle of our Card Guildees, and the Friday night interactive will include an ACG component. There are a few other programming related plans to finalize, and we'll reveal more information on those on the blog sometime in Febraury.

On the Roleplaying Guild (RPG) side, we're offering scenarios covering the second half of Season 7 and the first few of Season 8, as well as bringing back a few favorites. We have several special events planned, including an all-new interactive on Friday evening! In addition, a new series of quests will debut, and there are a few other things up our sleeve to be announced in February.

One of the biggest changes this year is the new "Pathfinder Society Academy" (PSA). Encompassing the Kid's Track offered in prior years, it expands to a third lesson track focusing on transitioning to full scenarios. With 10 tables in their own area of the ballroom, the PSA includes space for our younger GMs and players to have an experience tailored just for them. Games in PSA are family-friendly and sure to bring a smile to our younger players' faces.

The Gen Con lead volunteers and the PFS team worked together to determine a scheduling method to cover volunteer needs for slots while also maximizing free time (allowing folks to join in some of the fantastic Gen Con activities). One of the changes you'll see is the additional of a break between the morning and afternoon slots. This year, games in the Sagamore Ballroom will be run in three slots (8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, and 8:00 PM to 1:00 AM), with the exception of Sunday (9:00 AM to 2:00 PM). The Exhibition Hall demos will be run from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with the exception of Sunday (10:00 AM to 4:00 PM).

Volunteer slots are scheduled as follows:

Gen Con badges go on sale Friday and the housing lottery starts Sunday. As in prior years, housing in downtown Indianapolis is at a premium. Gen Con works to house as many people as possible through their housing lottery. We are opening registration today so attendees that plan on volunteering may plan badge purchase and housing lottery involvement accordingly. All folks that complete the registration process by midnight Saturday will have an answer before the lottery goes live Sunday morning.

To register for volunteering, complete this Gen Con questionnaire. You can send any questions to genconpfsvolunteer@paizo.com.

Thank you to all our volunteers and players who make the Pathfinder Society so fantastic! The team and look forward to seeing you at Gen Con 2016! Let's roll some dice!

Players: "Just a second." "Busy" "Hang on" "What? I was busy catching a bulbachu"

GM: Why did I volunteer my time again? I could be catching all the Pokethingies at the convention right now...

All of a sudden, jon realizes what all the cryptic HQ emails are really about.

You mean "that whole square mile around the convention center" in place of the Sagamore :P.

I had to turn in my 'nerd' card, because it's been pre-empted by folks who have hopped on the 'Nerdsrkewl' crowd and I can't keep up with the strange permutations they put 'nerdiosity' through.

Do I still get to go to GenCon?

The fact that you're willing to travel to GenCon (and aren't a local to the Indy area) is enough to get your nerd card back.

Different note but back on track...

Bob, Jon: You sent me an email towards the end of last week and it got snagged in my spam folder, found it this morning.

Spoiler:
Yes, interested in RPG GMing, but due to scheduling I'm only available Slot 1. Please let me know if you need me, I am willing to do that instead of HQ.

Has anyone received the Friday night 8-00 The Cosmic Captive or Saturday night Special yet. We are under 3 weeks till GENCON I would like some time to prepare and print maps off.

Grand Lodge 4/5

For the maps portion, I recommend viewing John's post here and printing the maps that you can find in other scenarios. The Cosmic Captive appears to have no custom maps, so you can have that part prepared already.

I see the problem here. You're asking about two and a half weeks too early. ;-)

** spoiler omitted **

I remember walking back to my hotel room from performing in the GenCon play at GenCon one night. There were so many groups of cosplayers and people in obvious nerd attire that I couldn't help but laugh at them, point and yell, "NEEEEEERDS!"

Of course, I did this while dressed as Elminster.

While there are occasionally scenarios that trickle out early, the typical date to expect the scenarios is the Friday before. As someone who's waiting for 3 scenarios for Gen Con, I know it's rough, but I'm keeping that weekend free. I recommend starting on prepping what scenarios you already have now.

Historically, scenarios are dropped the Friday before GenCon. The community has been asking for years for more time. So far this year at least two of the scenarios have been sent out. That's fantasist.

That's why I've skipped GMing at GenCon the last two years, after that experience 3 years ago. This year, I volunteered to GM, but only if they gave me scenarios that would be available to download months in advance.

Having been in a different campaign where scenario-equivalents in some cases *weren't even done* at the time they were supposed to be played, PFS looks like an improvement?

Downside, for folks who are traveling at the start of the week (to get there a bit earlier), getting things the weekend before isn't an optimal solution.

It may be the best working solution developed over the years, and deadlines are always hard, but...

.. it might help to look at it as the game itself being run by the dm as the finished product rather than the scenario itself being the finished product. The longer the scenario waits to be made better the worse it will be for the important part.

John, Linda, & Tonya are working diligently to get all new materials to the GMs ASAP. The hope is everything will be done by the 22nd. Of course, sometimes sh*t happens and its possible something could be later than that, but so far, they have been releasing scenarios a little at a time and a head of schedule so just keep your eyes on your email for that Paizo notice.

Good to hear and thank you for the update!

Dark Archive 4/5 5/5 ****

There truly is a lot coming out this year at or tight before gen con.

3 scenarios for the regular monthly release, including the conclusion to the seeker arc
2 exclusives (we have one already)
1 interactive special
3 gen con release scenarios.

John and Linda have their work cut out for them, and much of it is already out. This is already better than last year!

Silver Crusade 4/5

Yeah, they do seem to be getting better at this. Unfortunately, the front loaded schedule to get this many new scenarios out right at the start of the season makes Gen Con tough every year.

Scarab Sages

Any idea as to when 8-02 Ward Asunder will be available for me to actually start reading through? It's been added to my account but has been unavailable for download since the seventh...

Grand Lodge 4/5

Latest volunteer update email has stated the intention of all scenarios being available by the 22nd. No guarantee that goblin shenanigans won't delay that goal however.

I just found it odd that I got the email stating that the scenario is available for download on the seventh, but it actually isnt still.

Shadow Lodge 4/5 *** Venture-Captain, Michigan—Mt. Pleasant

Yeah and I had Serpent's Ire added to my account back in March/April, but it was finally added to my downloads a week or so. They can add things to your account long before they're actually complete or available to download. It just means you'll have access to it as soon as it's available.

Any update on ETA?

Also, in my downloads, there is a note that I will be receiving 8-02 (which I'm scheduled to run at Gen Con) when it's ready, however, I don't see a note for 7-99 Through Maelstrom Rift. Should I be concerned? Am I not on the list to receive 7-99?

I think things are still being hammered out?

Good luck, and may you get what you need in a timely fashion.

I also haven't received 7-99. I have a number of the other GenCon releases, so I'm guessing that and 8-00 are still not complete.

I was going to ask the same thing soon. Filling out as much of the chronicle in advance as possible is a real time saver on game day.

Heya! In the office to help sort this out for folks: we have uploaded each new scenario but #8-03 to volunteer accounts. Do not rely on email notifications: check your download page *first* (I suggest sorting by "Date Added to My Downloads" for easier reference in this case). We have issues with folks either getting the notification in their junk mail or sent to a secondary account because it doesn't match their paizo.com login.

I did find a problem with the process for granting the #7-99 and #8-00 to certain volunteers, which skipped them in what I thought was granting them last night. Folks who need those scenarios should receive an email shortly alerting them that they're available. Again, double-check your My Downloads page first.

If you find that you're still in a scenario-less limbo on Monday, July 23 for a scenario that is *not* #8-03, please contact me directly at chris.lambertz@paizo.com and we will cross reference our volunteer lists to get it to you.

Shadow Lodge 4/5

Oh my.

4/5

Note that on your Download page, 7-99 is at the top of your season 7 list, instead of coming after -98 where is should be. Someone (like me) who fails their perception check may think it is missing when it is actually there.
