Secrets (and Setbacks) Revealed: Adventure Card Guild and Iconic Heroes Miniatures

Tuesday, September 23, 2014

Greetings, Pathfinders.

Bad news, to me, is like mayonnaise—unpalatable on its own, but a mere unpleasant surprise when it sneaks into the middle of an otherwise delicious sandwich. So your mayo in this blog post can be found in the middle, surrounded by tasty fixins'.

Card Game Tuesdays

The card game team is excited to announce the beginning of the Tuesday card game blog series! Various members of the team will pop in here each week and give you the latest and greatest news and ramblings about new releases, Adventure Card Guild organized play, and whatever else we think you'd enjoy reading. This blog is the first in that series.

Adventure Card Guild Sneak Peek

Avast! Sharks sighted on the starboard bow! Something's stirred up a shoal of sharks. You've seen their fins swimming alongside your ship for days, and sharks are as patient as they are hungry. Could it be that someone else is swimming alongside them?

You'll find out in Scenario 1-2 of Season of the Shackles, The Lone Shark.

DURING THIS SCENARIO

Put the Shark Island location card in the center of the table. Using the deck list from Shark Island, make a number of Shark Island stacks equal to the number of characters. Treat each of these stacks as a unique Shark Island location deck.

duunnn duunn... duuuun duunn...

Adventure Card Guild Launch Delayed

Unfortunately (and probably due to a sudden spike in shark attacks), the Class Decks required for Adventure Card Guild play will not be making it to your local retailer until next week. Season of the Shackles will launch next Wednesday, October 1st.

We're as disappointed as you are, but we strongly encourage you to stop by your friendly local game store this week so you can play On the Horizon, our new preview scenario. For this scenario, all that's needed is the Skull & Shackles base set, as the scenario's meant to be played with Skull & Shackles characters. Players will earn a free deck upgrade for their Adventure Card Guild character in the form of a mini-Chronicle sheet!

Iconic Heroes and the Adventure Card Game

Finally, to wash down the taste of that nasty mayo, I've got a spoiler from the upcoming line of WizKids' Iconic Heroes miniatures line and the associated promo cards for the card game. Behold Alahazra, prophet of the burning sands:

Fear my big pointy thing!

Weal? Woe? Those are for amateurs.

I have a bit of a thing for hats. Expect more hats.

Until next time,

First! This never happens.

Sad to hear that the decks have been delayed again. If I have a copy of the base game, can I run Organized play officially for my friends?

On the new promo, it says that alahazra is the owner, how's that work then?

Grand Lodge

I have a similar distaste for mayo, so your analogy is not lost on me.

I'm a little disappointed that my Bard deck didn't ship with the rest of my September (and August) subscriptions, but that only feeds the excitement to finally play in the Adventure Card Guild.

Sovereign Court

Hmm, Owner: Alahazra? I'm guessing no one but her can use it. That's certainly an interesting twist if so.

Also, as for the scenario spoiler -- multiple... Shark Islands? Do you hate us?!?!?!

Only if each person has a Class Deck. You can run the preview "On the Horizon" scenario, though, if you've got access to it.

Mostly I just really love sharks.

How do you get the preview 'On the Horizon' scenario?

If the mini looks as good as the render, I'll be picking it up. Minis of the pregens are just too handy for PFS to pass up.

Actually, all of the class decks ARE shipping with the September subs. The only thing that has changed is the street date for the B&M retail stores.

I'm hoping that's not the case. It would really reduce the usefulness of these cards. I'd like to see something like:

"If you are playing a character listed as the Owner of a card, it counts as a Basic B card for that character."

That way the card can be added to that character's starting deck and added from the box in between scenarios if they're missing a card of that type, but still be useable by other characters.

It's also interesting to see these listed as P (Promo) cards instead of something like S (Special). That means you'd be able to add them to an OP box, but you'll also have to really pick and choose now since there will be so many Promos to go into that 12 promo limit.

I think the "Owner" thing is may largely be there just to remind you which character it is associated with. Each of the miniatures will have a card associated with them. So, if you aren't familiar with the RPG, the Owner tag is just to reveal to you who it goes with.

Since we're wildly speculating, I'd be excited for the iconic characters to get their own cards. Perhaps we could see Lem's Flute, Valeros's tankard, Mirasel's Dagger (There are many like it, but this one is *mine*), and most importantly, Lini's Snow Leopard, better known as Droogami. For that last one, exclusivity makes a lot of sense.

Hold these thoughts.

The Exchange

I have run out of hands to hold all these thoughts!

So, Tanis, while we are having thoughts, any talk of playmats for the character decks in the future?

Silver Crusade

I don't see what the problem is. I love mayo on every sandwich on earth including banana, tomato, peanut butter, and to add it to things like pork'n'beans, chili, hotdogs, french fries, etc. so let's not bash mayo. You can bash on ketchup and mustard all you like. That's all I got to say about that.

The Exchange

Mine was supposedly put in a sidecart last month so that my August subscriptions would ship. I'll have to call Paizo tomorrow.

If they were put in your sidecart, they'd get shipped automatically with your next shipment. So expect them with your September shipment. With Adv 2 and the add-on deck.

Scarab Sages

That is a fine mini for Alahazra. Especially if that detailing on the robe makes it through to the finished product.

I believe it was sent to retailers who signed up for it.

September already shipped. No Bard deck, which is still in a pending order. I'll call.

It is a tough one (Played at Gencon) but it actually ended up going surprisingly well. We stacked up on each island, closing it and then moving to the next one.

That basically allowed us to "start" our turn at a closed island most of the time instead of having to start with the shark attack before anything else.

Just my 2 cents on some strategy, but the first round or two...TOUGH!

That scenario makes Siwar a sad panda... :(

Well, for the first round, everyone can start at the Lonely Island, and "fan out" to the shark islands, if that's what they want to do, since if I remember correctly, the scenario was one Lonely Island and a whole bunch of shark islands.

That figure looks lovely, especially the creepy eye on the Iconic Oracle's open palm.

And I have a long-standing theory that when it comes to Alahazra, the more powerful she becomes the larger her hat gets. Have you ever seen her Mythic character design? It takes up half of the blooming page in Mythic Origins!

Hey, one time I ate straight mayo, and it was okay. I don't do that anymore, because it would lead to ruin and obesity, but it wasn't bad. Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, card game. Neat to see some previews, sad about delays. Hopefully the next round'll go smoother, for all our sakes.

Scarab Sages

The card deck delays are indeed sad.

Too bad these promo cards and associated miniatures won't be similarly delayed, though.

Top ten list of why I would really like to meet Mike in person, although he lives some 8000 miles away from me.

10 His everlasting pingpong game with Hawkmoon (who, as everybody knows by now, is just a purely robotic Artificial Intelligence designed to make any game designer crazy - else how can you explain that this guy can produce 200+ clever PACG posts a day?)

9 His way of answering a 2000 posts long forum in a 3-4 words sentence (like "you are instructed otherwise") that will make us wonder for 2000 more posts what is the secret meaning of life

8 His trust in life and us that makes him confident that he can offer a ship that mysteriously teleports from a location to another without having to pretend it's just "magic"

7 His overall knowledge of the crazy irrational fantasy world that we - old D&D DMs - spend half our days in (not sure it's good English, who cares : let's pretend I write in "elfish"...)

6 His patience and courage after 15327 cards and erratas to those cards

5 His way of just having fun (not pretending to) when he is on a video or interview

4 His ability to just make great games - period

3 His ability to actually listen to players feebacks and gently steal some of our best ideas

2 His kindness in answering our evercoming questions on forums

And 1 (jingle) His 3-words-per-sentence humor (wait... hold your thoughts on this one... not sure how he will react to my post... just kidding)

And yes, this is purely "for free" : I have nothing to ask for in return...

My personal favorite post of the year. Hawkmoon as a pure robotic AI...I wonder if Hawkmoon will tell his family about this. Probably be news to them. Then again, maybe not...maybe they designed him. Have I been fooled all these years? Rise of the machines?!

The Iconic Heroes line is doing a box per month starting in January. The first two boxes are for RotRL heroes. We won't have Alahazra and her headgear until after S&S is over.

(I bought my metal miniature months ago since she wasn't in the Reaper Bones mini sets and, um, avatar.)

Last I checked there was nothing in the PACG rules about me being a robot, so I'm pretty sure I'm not. Though obviously Mike or Vic could always say otherwise. Though then my wife would probably have problems with that.

Or is all that exactly what a robot would say to throw you off the trail? Hmm....

If Hawkmoon IS a robot, perhaps he doesn't know

in which case, us telling him might trigger some inbuilt self-destruct mechanism and/or cause him to destroy all human life on earth...

Odd, since I just received notice that at least two stores in my area just got their shipments of the class decks. This is fundamentally weird, because the Midwest usually gets things last if there isn't M:TG stuff and the occasional simultaneous worldwide release.

That's what we did as well...all start on Lonely Island then move one at a time to the same Shark Island and hope we can close it before someone has to 'start on it'....

Definitely a SHARKNADO though!!!

Unfortunately my son and I didn't get to play the last scenario yet so we are patiently waiting for its release...(we were able to pick up all the character decks though!!)
