Escape from Dangerous Realms

Monday, March 28, 2016

The spring equinox recently passed, marking the northern hemisphere's transition from dreary winter weather to warmer days. Of course in Seattle, winter's departure means that instead of raining every other day, it has been raining almost every day. Fortunately, there are two new scenarios that you can enjoy with pleasant company as we banish the wintry doldrums and help the Pathfinders' allies escape their own dangerous predicaments.

Venture-Captain Calisro Benarry and Tamrin Credence, heist-planner extraordinaire!

Like the Pacific Northwest, the Gloomspires off the west coast of Garund both see their fair share of precipitation and experience predictable periods of pleasantly navigable weather (okay, perhaps I'm being a little unfair, as Seattle is positively gorgeous in time for PaizoCon). A team of Pathfinders recently returned to the Gloomspires to explore Sevenfingers' tomb, but Venture-Captain Calisro Benarry—illustrated here for the first time—has heard nothing from them since. Fearing they are in need of aid, she has asks the PCs to mount a rescue in Pathfinder Society Scenario #7-19: "Labyrinth of Hungry Ghosts" by Tom Phillips. As in last season's visit to the Gloomspires, Tom has created an adventure rich in atmosphere and steeped in thematically wowing danger. One of my favorite elements of the Gloomspires is that they're Tom's creation, dating back to his 2012 RPG Superstar submission, meaning he has been able to take an especially active role in presenting the site and unveiling its secrets. Linda and I hope you have as much fun playing through them as much as we developing them.

I would also like to recognize Sean Macdonald, who has handled the majority of the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild's custom maps for several years. He does great work overall, yet Linda and I were especially impressed with the visual impact of his cartography for this assignment.

Not all getaways need transpire in the nigh-inaccessible locales, as our third and final installment in the Faithless and Forgotten series shows: "The Infernal Inheritance". An ally of the Society has disappeared, and the Pathfinders have traced him to one of the cruelest facilities in Ostenso: a prison known as the Bloody Nail. Fortunately the Society has the local expertise of the halfling Tamrin Credence, an expert in planning heists and getting out alive. He can get the PCs into the facility, but from there its up to them to evade the security, find the captive, and escape one of Cheliax's most militarized cities. RPG Superstar 2015 finalist Christopher Wasko has composed a great heist with lots of options for a wide range of PCs—a fitting conclusion to this three-part series that contains several big secrets.

In parting, remember that Tonya and I are appearing on the Know Direction podcast on April 6th to answer questions about future campaign developments, including the upcoming seeker arc. We hope to see you there!

Always fun to see new illustrations for the various Venture Captains, I honestly pictured Venture Captain Calisero as more short haired than that.

I do not suppose that you could tell us when the next Additional Resources update is? Or if it will include Ultimate Intrigue? Sorry, I am just chomping at the bit a little.

We're expecting an update to both the Additional Resources and Campaign Clarifications document soon. The former will include information pertaining to Ultimate Intrigue.

Yay! Calisro has been in so many scenarios that I was beginning to wonder where her art was.

Also, I love the further proof that half-orc women can be super hot. New crush <3

Can't wait to return to the Gloomspires!

Is there going to be another update today? Voting for the PACG accessory contest was supposed to begin today...

Calisro is my all time favorite VC! So lovely to finally see her face! Also, thank you for giving us another Calisro adventure. I am so happy to see her again.

Yes! Back to the gloomspires! I made my players totally paranoid last time they were there!

Silver Crusade 4/5

Yeah, the last trip to the Gloomspires was Green Beard's first time meeting Calisro. He's still the right level to play this sequel. But I'll see when it's being played at my local store, and who else is at the table before deciding what PC to play.

I'm unreasonably happy about this scenario, both the "someone spent five prestige to recover a body" part, and the sequel part. One of my players has taken a vanity to own a small business, it is a tavern that specializes in ribs, it is called "The Halls of the Flesh Eaters". Apparently the first one made an impression.

Love the new art and eagerly waiting to play/read/run (hopefully in that order) the two new scenarios!

Arr, t'was Cap'n Benarry that inspired me to found me own lodge on me own ship, Th' Ardent Lady! I may be just an old salt, but this Venture Cap'n here isn't too old to swoon for the fine Orcish lass either!

Yar, I say!

If Tamrin Credence rebuilds Fort Clearwater, is it a Credence Clearwater Revival?

Hmm.. VC Retief VanSchuyver is still my preferred pathfinder seadog... But that portrait does have me reconsidering things.

Nice artwork by the way.

Depends on the little halfling jail breaker. From seeing what information we are told here, things in the scenarios themselves make a bit more sense perhaps.

Hotspur #2 begins to turn over THUNDERLIPS!'S one hitter in his hands.

THUNDERLIPS!: "I had my papers... my business papers. And my Credence tape."

Hotspur #1: "Oh? And what do you do for a living?"

THUNDERLIPS!: "I'm unemployed. Do you guys normally find these stolen longships? I mean..."

Hotspur #1: "Sadly, no, not very often. So I wouldn't hold out too much hope for your business papers."

Hotspur #2: "Nor the Credence."

Out of Anarchy was one of my first scenarios (and at a convention, no less!)

I adore Venture-Captain Calisro Benarry. ^_^

Grand Lodge 4/5

I think I've played/run every scenario she appears in, and she's one of the top 3 best VCs in the Society. (Jorsal of Lauterbury is hard to beat, especially when my image of him is Idris Elba.)

Having finally seen the Face Card for him... I'm pretty sure that's intentional. ^_^

And, yes... Venture-Captain Benarry is probably my favorite VC so far, only second to (non-VC) Kreighton Shaine, whose every appearance is a delight.

His portrayal in Siege of the Diamond City had me imagining him quoting Stacker Pentacost.

Nah, Jorsal of Lauterbury is our Local Venture Captain David Montegomery.

But where is Lauterbury?

Silver Crusade

Huh. That just goes to show you how different people interpret different characters. I always think Jorsal as-written is super-blah-vanilla.

Though, to be fair, I think a lot of VCs fall into that; half the time the only reason I remember who gave the briefing is because I remember which lodge we were in. It all depends on the GM to give the VC life. I can thus see someone choosing to run Jorsal like Idris Elba and being cool, but I never get the feeling that he is written that way.

(For a strong example of a character giving a briefing that I think is written in an interesting way, go read Aram Zey's briefing in The Bloodcove Disguise. His "voice" comes through loud and clear just from the writing, whereas a lot of briefings I could have switched the names around on the VC and nobody would have noticed)

To bring us back on topic of this blog post, Calisro is one of the few VCs that always sticks out to me. She has a consistent voice and personality that makes her distinctive.

He made it up when he bought his title from the Taldan Crown.

Alternatively, not "where", but "who".

This is part of why I love Kreighton Shaine. He's certainly distinctive, if a bit of a cliché.

(Admittedly, I've not read every scenario he's in - maybe the couple I know him from are just that good.)

Poor Jorsal always seems to shepherd the party over to olystria , so I usually just have her do the briefing to cut down on the flurry of names dates and places to throw at the characters in the beginning of the session.

Nope. Miss him too. It was funny when the DM was trying to play osprey as something odd while he was talking to my druid: who talks while in batform hanging upside down. He out ospreyed osprey.

I made a joke a while ago about PCs taking missions from a talking rutabaga if it offered prestige points and XP.

Season 7 has a few very literal examples coming very close to this...

VC Holgarin Smine has the single best part of any briefing, though.

"When you know where the key is, go get it. Nice people got it? Play nice. Off in some ruin? Go be Pathfinders!"

He's the best VC because he's the only one who uses the word 'Pathfinder' as a verb.

Also:

"“Anyway, best to lie low and not make a ruckus. Unless you have to.”

And:

"They want to hit Pathfinders? Pathfinders can hit, too."

5/5

Smine is a lot of fun to roleplay. He's so terse.

My favorite might still be Drandle Dreng though, for all his faults. There's no one else who vexes players quite like him.

Silver Crusade 5/5

When I've gotten to GM scenarios with Smine, I like to try and play him like J. Jonah Jameson, as performed by JK Simmons.
