Of the Occult and Psychic Obscura!

Thursday, May 28, 2015

The content we showed off from July's Occult Adventures hardcover at the PaizoCon Preview Banquet whetted some appetites for a few more details. I know many of you are looking forward to sinking your teeth into the book even more, especially after we previewed all of the art of the new iconics—and don't worry, you'll be seeing more of them soon! But for now, enjoy this curated selection of art from Occult Adventures!

That's the iconic Psychic.

I like the old guy shooting lasers out of his eyes and rocking devil horns.

The Iconic Psychic and Occultist do look pretty nifty. I gotta applaud at how the Occultist is heavyset, but still looks like a total badass.

Is that supposed to be another iconic, or does the blue spell aura indicate this is a dominated foe?

Also, I want that stuffed owlbear.

The old woman behind the green figure is an iconic. I can't remember which.

I think the old lady is the Iconic Spiritualist controlling that green warrior Phantom. She also pops up in this picture. In terms of core mechanics, she's basically an occult version of the Summoner class with some Shaman King anime flare.

Yea, pretty sure that stuffed owlbear needs to be a purchasable thing now.

Spiritualist.

The other character in that picture is another iconic.

Also, I am fairly certain the guy reading the object is the iconic Occultist.

Would make sense to be the Mesmerist in terms of the eye-lasers. Maybe the blue spell aura is a buff of some sort?

EDIT: Ah nevermind that is apparently the Psychic.

The two characters fighting the duergar are almost certainly iconics; one is pretty clearly the Psychic; the other (as has been pointed out) is most likely the older woman Spiritualist. The Green Phantom there looks almost exactly like the picture of the Phantom next to the Raging Golem picture (save for the color).

I think that blue aura surrounding their heads is supposed to be a psychic link (likely a telepathic bond spell).

While it might not be the exact same owlbear, I'll point you to this Kickstarter from Dreamscarred Press. :D

Thankies for the link. Not quite as adorable, but I'll be backing this project for sure!

Their owlbear kind of looks like a Furby TM.

Every attempt to manufacture them on a large scale has resulted in factory fires, jammed equipment, and very poor safety ratings. I don't think spreading them throughout the world would be in humanity's best interest.

Too bad the spiritualist plays into the old = ugly trope. Old people get a bit stomped in that regard. But on the other hand, it's in the eye of the beholder and some might find her attractive. Not to mention that every character doesn't need to be sexy in the first place. So it's a bit of win some lose some.

I gotta imagine designing Iconics are a "Damned if you do, Damn'd if you don't" type situations. Making a the Spiritualist a Milf would've lead to accusations of sexism and misogyny. Making her an older man, would lead to stereotype of casters being frail and somewhat infringe on Ezren's turf. Making her anything will ruffle someone's feathers one way or another.

Liberty's Edge

Gilf, but yeah, when you're right you're right.

I do appreciate what they did with Wynne in Dragon Age though.

I'm looking at the dream voyage art. Is Kolo trying to climb out to catch one of the ethereal bird-things?

This set of iconics also has a child and an obese iconic.

Shardra: You do realize that if you fall off here, you might be stuck in dreams for all eternity?

Kolo: YOLO!

That phrase really loses its meaning in a world with raise dead, doesn't it?

I'm not sure it had much meaning in the first place.

When do you think we will begin to see the Iconics introduction blogs? Next week? The week after?

My psychic 8-Ball says 6 weeks before the street date of the book. :D

He is, but that has nothing to do with upcoming previews. (Have you not seen Hellraiser?)

Liberty's Edge

I think it's some kind of horror movie, right? Horror movies scare me. ;)

And Kuthies in Nidal!!!

The picture of Amiri and the frost giant doesn't look very occult; I wonder what's going on there.

Also, what's up with the rune-covered werewolf?

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 32

The image name for the rune-wolf thing says it's a golem. No idea what's going on with the frost giant.
