2 Many Monsters!

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

This is the final week of editing before we ship the Bestiary 2 off to the printer and that means the whole office is neck deep in monsters. Since we've nowhere else to put them in the ever-more-crowded editorial pit, I thought a nice way to get them out from underfoot would be to exile a few to the blog. So here are a handful of beasties we no longer need immediately on hand. Enjoy!

Those monsters by and Mammoliti and Hou:

WTF?!?

Silver Crusade

Nice.

Strongly suspect Monster 2 is some sort of mimic variant. That white gluey aesthetic and all.

Monster 4 has got to be an aquatic draconic something.

Monster 3: Winged griffon?

What the hell is Monster 1?! Alien? Construct? Mecha-daemon?

Worse. He's all of those things. Also possibly a zombie.

Liberty's Edge

Hmmm, Mark says these monsters are no longer needed ‘immediately on hand’– does that mean they’ve been cut from the Bestiary 2? Or am I reading too much into that comment?

They are nice.

Might be a good call on Monster 2, I hadn't thought of that.

Monster 3 I suspect is a garden variety Hippogriff.

Monster 4 looks like a reasonably 'classic' dragon to me - you might be right on it being aquatic, but I wouldn't immediately jump to that conclusion.

Liberty's Edge

Monster 1 has got to be some sort of construct / golem that an alchemist can create.

Liberty's Edge

I’m steering away from mimic variant for Monster 2 on closer viewing. Maybe its a starving Osquip with a bad case of worms and a serious fungal infection?

Paizo Employee Director of Narrative

Hippogriff!

The outcry was too big.

Edit: Oh yeah, and the thing is frickin' mounted, so take that everyone from a year ago! ;)

Silver Crusade

Love the art of that dragon. Very cool.

My guesses:

Monster 1: Some sorta variant Brain in a Jar?

Monster 2: Cordyceps Unilateralis?

Monster 3: Hippogriff

Monster 4: A dragon of some kind :P

You're reading too much into it.

Look at the tail, there's definite webbing between the horns on the tail, that would make it a daemon swimmer,....

Shadow Lodge

Monster #1 is full of awesome...so much that it's squirting from his joints.

Dark Archive

i bet monster #1 is a scientist golem

Okay, here's my (totally unofficial) guesses:
Monster 1: The creator of Mountain Dew.
Monster 2: Trap-Rat-Spider
Monster 4: Aquamarine Dragon... or is that more cerulean?
Monster 3: ...WTF! Awww! How'd that get in there!

Holy carp, Wes; it was 5.18 am when you posted that! Paizo: the staff that never sleeps! O_o

You can tell Mark's new. Doesn't he know he's supposed to make the image file names of the creatures he's displaying?

So what you're saying is that the Bestiary 2 is sponsored by Mountain Dew? Genius! Why hadn't someone thought of this sooner ;)

Yes, that isn't totally not not what I'm saying. :P

Okay, until I get it, my guesses:
Monster 1 (top Left): Alchemical Golem of some sort (with a formeldehyde preserved brain).

Monster 2 (top right): A rat-plant=spider thing, judging by the "base" of the creature, possibly infectious with parasitic worms of some sort?

Monster 3 (bottom left): Hippogriff. This is great for my soon to be released Hobgoblin Hippogriff Calvalry on some unsuspecting players (mwahahahahahaha)

Monster 4 (bottom Right): Water or Salt Drake. Perhaps an aqua dragon...

There's me guesses, I hope that at least ONE of them is right :P

/d

I suspect monster 2 was influenced by the real world parasite Cordyceps unilateralis.

HIPPOGRIFF! Finally.

Contributor

Monster 1 is a brain a jar without any of the physical limitations! This is one of the scariest concepts I've ever encountered. I seriously gasped as the picture loaded.

Dark Archive

Turquoise dragon critter was cool.

Also the alchemical whatever-the-hell-it-is with injector arms...

Monster 2 is disturbing, not so much the idea of an giant ant / dire rat hybrid that's been colonized by a yellow musk venus fly trap, as the bed of writhing white larva it's walking over. Ew.

Wow- just read the wiki article. Fascinating! Thanks for posting...

I can't tell if that punning title is awesome or awful?

I just can't help wondering if the first one is one of the new Inevitables.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Charter Superscriber

Hou ftw!

Grand Lodge

wow these are great!

I throw my iron helm in with monster 1 being some sort of golem an alchemist makes.

Monster 2, whatever the hell it is looks to be JUST the monster I have been looking for! Been needing a new monster for a horror/chtulhu adventure.

Monster 3: about time!

Monster 4: thinking some kind of gem monster. In the Dragons book it talks about different types of dragons, one of them being a few gem dragons. And those were always popular enough to be in secondary Monster Manuals for ages past.

I read the article which led me to another one about a parasite that makes grasshopper commit suicide

linky

Damn, that Hyrum guy works quick on the marketing.

Jon Brazer Enterprises

yeah!!! horror needley constructy thingy.

Love the needle for arms "Mars Attack" Martian dude. Simply awesome. Hope it's a construct so my wizard can create one. Who'll @#$@ with me when I have one of those as a bodyguard!

Best. Blog. Post. Ever!

I can't tell if Monster 2 is some sort of carnivorous, symbiotic plant or the rat-spider creature it is riding on. Or both...

Monster 1 is disturbing.

Shadow Lodge

Monster 1: The brain has eyes. I'm not saying anymore about this one.

Monster 2: ...

Me thinks, Monster # 1 is what´s left of the Alchemist when he doesn´t stop taking those mutagens, grin.

Actually, he doesn´t have to place the injection all by himself anymore with this little construct, nice device.

Has anyone taken the position that monster #3 is not a hippogriff, and that anyone who thinks it's a hippogriff is wrong, and should feel bad about being so wrong? Because, if not, I call dibs on that position. I will henceforth be intractable regarding the identity of monster #3 (which I believe is actually a pegasus with a magic item that makes it look like a beak) and belligerent* towards any who claim otherwise.

*More belligerent than normal.

Well, clearly it's a My Little Pony with the Pretty Wings template.

One of my players actually has two intellect devourer corpses in jars in his laboratory (I planted them in Carrion Hill as set-dressing). I might have him find one of the jars has gone missing, and his laboratory is in shambles. Would be a fun little side-trek :-).

#3 is an elf riding something it found in his cabbage patch this morning.

Liberty's Edge

#3 is clearly a magical, intelligent shortbow.

Actually, monster #1 is Krang's first attempt at a body suit.

Seriously though... what I like the most is that monster #1 has a round "circle" in the middle of his chest... just large enough for the "brain" to enter and exit the "body".
