2 Many Monsters!

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

This is the final week of editing before we ship the Bestiary 2 off to the printer and that means the whole office is neck deep in monsters. Since we've nowhere else to put them in the ever-more-crowded editorial pit, I thought a nice way to get them out from underfoot would be to exile a few to the blog. So here are a handful of beasties we no longer need immediately on hand. Enjoy!

Scarab Sages

#1 Alchemy Golem
#2 Some sort of symbiote creature (part rat, part venus flytrap).

Grand Lodge

Beastie #1: Didn't I see one of these in that old animated flick Wizards?

Beastie #2: Resident Evil Rat!

Beastie #3: Buckbeak? Thats not how I pictured Serius!

Beastie #4: A Lesser Dragon. Water Drake? I like the idea of lesser dragons . . .

Monster #1- Iron Man after he developed Anorexia.

Monster #2 - The world's scariest fungi and its zombie-ant.

Monster #3 - I'm not going to say anything, in case Sebastian decides to be mean to me if I do.

Monster #4 - A dragon. Or make that, yet another dragon.

I tend to agree with the masses on the first being an alchemy golem, the third a hippogriff and the fourth some sort of primordial dragon, possibly aquatic.

As for #2, I think it is one of the new Daemons, intended to fill in the lower CR ranks and likely a servant of Apollyon, Horseman of Pestilence, since it combines elements of a rat, ant, maggots and the fungus that wraithstrike linked to, all of which are verminous disease vectors that corrupt and consume.

In all seriousness, what are these? Will we be getting them as a Bestiary 2 Bonus, just like Bestiary 1 Bonus?

All of these monsters appear in Bestiary 2. As to what they are, all of them have been correctly guessed but one.

The video that I think inspired #2 bounced around facebook a few months back and freaked everyone out. Everyone's reaction was: "We've got to do SOMETHING with this!" Wait for the time lapse:

WATCH IT!.

Stuff like this will make you never want to leave the house.

Liberty's Edge

Clearly, it's the Pokemon Paras.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

I think that is one of the best guesses so far!

Though maybe it's a Resident Evil Paras?

Ah-hah! Confirmation that monster #3 is not a hippogrif. Suck on that, haters!

Neat stuff ... I could see that as inspiration for #2

I thought Monster #1 was a Gearsman or some other sort of Numerian construct.

you win the thread. have a kobold-shaped cookie with sprinkles.

Seconded. That's the best explanation brain-in-a-jug guy is going to get.

Monster 4: An abomination dragon, maybe? Perhaps a hoarfrost dragon? (I hope its a dragon and not a drake. The two drakes we've seen both have wyvern-like bodies with two legs and two wings. I like having easy visual distinctions between the dragon types: true dragons with four legs and two wings; drakes and wyverns with two legs and two wings; linnorms with serpentine bodies, two legs, and no wings; azi with serpentine bodies, two or more arms, and two wings; etc.)

If I had my way with the artwork, the azi would have no wings. Their inspiration came from Persian folklore where there was a clear distinction between good and evil among the creatures of the land. Apparently to these folks, creatures who flew were far superior to those that slithered, as told by the stories. There was a divine distinction between creatures that were capable of taking to the air by wing and those that weren't. Birds good, snakes bad. You know the folklore.

Of all the monsters in here the brain in the construct frame with syringes is what I'm most interested in. Something like that is just plain freaky. The new and improved Brain in a Jar and Alchemy Golem are probably the best guesses of what it could be. Personally I kind of hope it's the former rather than the latter.

Dark Archive

#4 ia a half blue dragon spinasaurus.

Dark Archive

#1 is what inevitables resort to when a someone just. won't. talk.

Until then they put it in the corner and toss a sheet over it, and whenever someone asks about it they politely steer the conversation elsewhere.
