Are there trees in the area? Preferably dead ones for firewood?


There are trees along the river, but there are few to none in the grasslands. You can gather enough wood for a fire here without issue. You can even get more than you need for one night, if you so desire.

So you will have a fire regularly for camp? Any other precautions you use regularly?

There is an ongoing debate in discord about a "standard" camp setup. Or rather it will soon, since timezones, etc. We will give you the result after that's done.

Just to let everyone know, I didn't check the discord chat before posting, so my post didn't take that into consideration. Obviously, the characters can disagree with what Alvis is advocating.


Just let me know what you decide. It won't really matter for this first night, and does not need to slow us down too much, but eventually it will matter, and I'd rather have it solved then wish it weren't left open-ended.

Alright, so we had a poll or two, talked a bit, and the standard MO for a night in the wild was decided to be a 12 hr break, three pairs doing 4 hr shifts and eating rations if available.

So unless there are special circumstances, this is the consensus.

I had meant to mention this back before leaving Jamandi Manor (and I think I did, albeit off-line and not here), but Graham had intended to purchase a map of some sort of the Brevoy area and any part of the Stolen Lands it might include.

I wasn't looking for anything more than a vague idea of where locations we knew of would be located. (Something like this would be more than fine.)

The idea was to have a reference point for getting to Oleg's and not really much more. No real mechanical benefit beyond knowing which way to go.

I don't' think a map of the Stolen Lands is easily available even in Brevoy. I do think someone told you to just keep heading west. That might be the best you can get for directions for now.

Whoops, initially forgot to post as my alias for Velas. Looks like that clutters up the Characters page with my main profile. My bad.

@DM DoctorEvil: following up on item purchases for Velas back in Nivakta's Crossing, I decided to just pick up the dagger as previously mentioned. Updating the wealth sheet on the party inventory now.


Noted re the daggers, Velas, thanks! I can clean up the characters tab later as needed also.


Thoughts (or rules if you can find them) on if Courageous Anthem continues after the caster (Teela in this case) goes unconscious? Do we think about CA as a continuous song that last the entire duration, or a short term action that has lasting effect in the affected parts minds, not just their ears?

I tend to think about the latter and cannot find a rule or internet advice on this matter. It does have the Concentrate trait, so I am at a toss up.

I will lean for now to the fact that it lasts a full round still, as the echoes of it have effect, but if you have thoughts or links, I would learn from it.


I had no idea this random encounter would be so painful. The die roller won't stop doing max damage. Hate to wipe out the whole party this way, so let's see if you can turn the tide on your turns. Otherwise, Gregori might have to be way cooler than I anticipated....

It's an effect with an area of 60 ft radius and duration of 1 round. Not an aura or something similar. While gurgling blood seems hardly inapiring, I don't see anything about the effect not working when the castet goes unconscious.

As for the difficulty, I do have a theory (and a backup). I did run the math and these seem to be either elite level 1 or regular level 2 beasties.

The encounter design tables consider a PCL+1 creatue a "Low- or moderate-threat boss" worth 60 xp.

There are 4 of them (again, assuming all are level 2), so the total xp budget is 240 xp.

Since there are 6 PCs in the game (I am not including Gregori in the math here), the encounter budget for a moderate encounter for a party of this size would be 120 xp points. Since this is double that, it would be considered an extreme threat encounter, which usually means at least a few dead PCs. With level 1 PCs that are not geared up, even moreso.

I assume the encounter is a randomly generated one. If this is the case, I would suggest putting the numbers into an encounter calculator and making adjustments if needed (adding/removing creatures, using weak/elite templates or terrain/weathet/hazards for fine tuning) in the future.

If it is not randomly generated...

...you could have just said you don't feel like running the game.

I did not bother with the encounter table, as I suspected this would be easier than it has proven, but lesson learned. This is a random encounter from a table in the text. I also think the table has them listed incorrectly, these are brush thylacines which are listed as LOW and the regular thylacines (which are less powerful) are listed as Moderate on the table. Either way, some combination of text error and GM malpractice and here we are...

If you can down one or two of these guys, the rest are likely to run away and lick their wounds, so hang on as best you can. Hopefully it will be a touch challenge and not a TPK

I'm confused. When and how did I gain 16 hp?

I cast a healing spell on you, giving you 15 out of 16 hit points back. Look for the DM's post labeled Pack Attack - Round 2 - continued and my post just before it.


BTW, after that last unexpected combat, you are at something like 800xp so getting close enough to start thinking about Level 2, if you haven't already. I expect you will level up while at Oleg's which isn't terribly far away at this point.

I will take your roll above, but I need details on what you plan to craft, what size, are there weights holding it down, etc. You have 70' of rope in the stockroom, so it can't be very large unless you start using your own supplies, and cutting it down for a net probably ruins its use.

The text calls for the party to level up after the ambush of the bandits at Oleg's. It may take a bit of time to accomplish that combat IRL, but be ready to power up your PCs soon thereafter.

FWIW, Teela's stealth roll didn't include the cover bonus, so +2 to that result, I think.

You could. The catwalks are meant to allow visibility over the wall for shooting etc. You would expose yourself to those inside fully if you did.

I have ideas about what to do but I'd like to know the height of the walls of the output as well as the distance to the man and horses on the ground outside.


I am away from the text but I believe the walls are 10’ high and the towers are 15’. I did not include horse tokens but assume they are right south of where the Green Bandit token is for now. His omen is a fair representation of his relative location.

Indeed, I second the request for your reasoning.

Faen was taking the Wizard archetype primarily to cover the lack of arcane ability in the party....and to fulfill the promise of her mother's teachings :)

I can't do anything more until round 3. Alvis's goal if not obvious is to get to the dying or dead bandit within the wall, the leader Happs, and stabilize him and check if he is really dead. Questioning him might be a viable backup plan. Won't say more until it's my turn to act.

Thanks for letting us use the FA, it should prove an interesting experiment for contrast with other campaigns.

I cannot seem to move my token on the map, please move as needed.

I have placed my current planned future build to level 5 in my profile. I'll place a level two upgrade soon for review and for input from all concerned parties.


I put the 43sp in the communal pool for now, but we can divvy it out however you like. LMK if want to lay claim to any of the bandit gear, or how you want to handle the silver stag amulets.

I updated the Loot Tracker and your character file to include the 2nd level changes you suggest. the only thing missing is adding an additional 1st level spell to cast. LMK if something else changes.

BTW, Oleg may have a set of heavier armor in his trade goods, if you want to swap out after taking the feat.


Not giving too much away, but back in mid January, you did hear about where a bandit camp might be...


And don't forget to make your level ups before you go out wandering in the woods
