1E pathfinder Kingmaker Book 0 — Intrigue on the East Sellen River “We are not the good guys.” (Inactive)

Game Master Chainmail

A prelude to potential Kingmaker campaign where characters experience a harrowing journey into the wild river kingdoms. Who can be trusted when trade and coin are the primary motivation for keeping the East Sellen river safe. In this chaotic time for Brevoy, are there internal forces at work that threaten House Lebeda's trading empire? It is 15 Phar 4710

This is a recruitment for my second group that will run through the Kingmaker Adventure Path after a short prelude in the Riverlands.

I will be selecting up to six players, this will be a 15 point buy, with no maximum or minimum stat. One bonus trait with a drawback, one of your traits should be a campaign trait.

This group has no alignment restrictions, and will probably include evil characters. If you want to be a good guy, you should be in the "other thread".

I firmly believe in allowing players to have a say over the game they play. And rather than say what this group will be, we will say what this group will not be -- they will not be "the good guys".

Good guys in Group 1

Link above to the good guys recruitment to allow you to see questions about character builds.

And, this is also a forum for the player to decide how much they want to be not good guys, and what that will entail.

I'm from the other thread! This is the CE changeling witch I mentioned over there. She's C/E not because she's mustache twirling, but because it's a not-exactly-rare path for changeling witches to take and she's done some bad things in the past.

I should say I'm totally down with good characters in the group, as long as they want to be here.

Silver Crusade

I would love to play, but I have GMed the AP and you may want to give the opportunity to someone who has not. That said, I understand the kingdom building rules :)

That said, the game is expecting you to build a kingdom. I'd play a LE character myself. Chaotic people may have trouble fitting in.

I suppose I should move myself over here given all the conversation, but honestly, GM Tribute, you can move me wherever you need/desire and I can make the Alchemist fit in.

I'm still working on him. I usually use HeroLab, but sadly my computer decided to die, so I've been doing everything by hand, and poring through the multiple pages of spells and archetypes has given me lots to read and consider.

Tibold Crenshaw will be the character once he's done.

I haven't played the AP, but isn't it pretty flexible on what kind of kingdom you build? Like, I figure a Chaotic PC might want to build an Andoran, or a kingdom that respects the River Kingdoms rules as much as possible, right?

To say what is in the other thread — soft deadline of Jan 31. We can take up to six and need a minimum of four. I am hoping we can get some more submissions.

pinvendor and Elfriede submissions looking good.

I was going to put the alchemist here.

I may have missed this. Maybe it was in the original interest thread, or I'm just skipping the post somehow.

What is the starting wealth?

Average wealth by class is starting wealth.

I have decided to take pinvendor and Elfriede, they are responsible for this idea and have a solid posting history. pinvendor had a game pulled out from under him and Elfriede is running a game.

We have four openings I hope to fill by Jan 30 if possible. I am hoping pinvendor and Elfriede can add to what I think the not good guys group is. It is a group that does not exclude any alignment. I will be expecting characters to play their selected alignment. It can become a Way of the Wicked type game in the river lands, an avenue already created by Piazo for evil characters.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

Definitely interested! I have an idea for a Demagogue Bard, born and raised in the Riverlands (probably Brigand trait), who's most dangerous feature is their mouth.

Totally plans to see whatever foundling nation formed throw off any claim Brevoy thinks they might have on them at the earliest opportunity.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

If memory serves Way of the Wicked is a 3rd party offering while Hell's Vengeance was the Paizo AP for evil characters. I don't know much about either, but wanted to clarify in case there is a specific tone one has over another.

As far as my gaming intent, it is not specifically my desire to play as an Evil group out to decimate and subjugate the Stolen Lands.

Thoughts on including (blank) Evil:
I saw the possibility of including Evil alignment characters as more of those whose interest in the expedition and exploration may have more underhanded or selfish purposes. I won't speak for GM Elfriede, but my own hopes are that players in this group choose to recognize that sometimes circumstances make for some strange bedfellows and we all tolerate things we don't like when working with other people to achieve a broader goal. Not all Evil is in-your-face-there's-no-way-to-miss-it. Some evil is subtle and insidious and even tolerated since the person may not be engaging any activity which actually breaks any laws.

I imagine this game could go several different ways depending on the party's alignment composition. An even balance of G & N against the E would be my preference as I think this will have the most roleplay potential. The more Evil characters there are, I would expect the overtness of patently Evil behavior to increase...which is not exactly what I desire to play. The exception being a Suicide Squad style game where a nearly incorruptible -G character holds the leashes of walking catastrophes. I've played in something like that before, and it was very fun.

My current idea for my character (if I go the Evil route at all) is an Evil which is more sociopathic in terms of the clinical diagnosis.

Quote:

a person with a personality disorder manifesting itself in extreme antisocial attitudes and behavior and a lack of conscience.

As the lack of conscience can easily allow behavior which is evil, my character would very much have a past of having taken Alchemical experiments "too far." Thus leading to his current alignment of NE. This would not mean he actively desires and pursues evil acts for the sake of evil. He sees his actions as the right thing to do to discover newer and better medicine and alchemy to improve civilization. But let's be real, that behavior is evil regardless of the "noble" intent. Of obvious Evil behavior, there will likely be very little, but I imagine there would be many rumors in civilized company about him and his research methods whispered as he passes by.

I want to be clear, for the purposes of survival and exploration, the Alchemist will be a team player. There may be personality conflicts and friction over decisions to handle certain interactions with other parties than our own, but that can happen even with an all Good/Neutral party. Everyone has their own opinions. ;)

Thoughts?

Silver Crusade

I'll drop for someone who hasn't played before.

Well, as I understand it, there's 4 open slots, so no one needs to drop yet as I think we only have 1 other person (Mark Thomas 66) even potentially applying. Based on comments in the other thread, I don't believe Kobold Catgirl is applying just lurking the thread. With you bowing out, we won't even have enough to start!

Elfriede is also supposed to be a cooperative character, even if she's Chaotic Evil. She's more of a product of her mother, a hag, and less of a "want to be" evil character. So there'd be room for a good or neutral character to influence her in the right direction.

I look at alignment as a snapshot of where a character is right now, not necessarily where they'd like to be. I also found a chart that explained good as "puts others before self, even if it hurts themselves" and evil as "puts self before others, even if it hurts others", that felt really accurate to me.

Ideally, we could get at least 4 so we could get the game off the ground. I'm thinking between a bard, witch, and alchemist, we wouldn't *need* a divine character for healing, but really, anything is workable if we're semi-intelligent as a party.

I'm strongly thinking about entering with this character (leveled back down--it's a long story, but I joined with her just around the time the party had hit level 2), but also trying to be careful. I don't want to overcommit, especially with how distanced I am from PF1 these days, but I am very interested in this.

Elfriede I’m stoked you get to play your changeling!

I wanted to see how many folks we had on the ‘other side’ so I figures while I’ was here I’d make a list:
Posted interest:
Vlad the Crusader
Mark Thomas 66: a Demagogue Bard (probably Brigand trait)

Posted characters
Elfriede: Elfriede Vass CE Female Changeling Witch 1
pinvendor: Tibold Crenshaw N Male human alchemist
Kobold Catgirl: Wylhia The Wisp NE female gnome Druid (Feyspeaker)

Well, three set to go and a good Idea from Mark Thomas 66 and we’ve got twelve more days to get more applications. It looks like Tibold can play skill monkey, but if you don’t get an applicant to play meat shield, I will throw Ivar into the mix.

Thanks, Robert Heny!

@GM Tribute, am I reading the heading in the Good Guys thread correctly that we will be using the variant Adventuring/Background skill scheme and it will be only 1 Background rank per level?

Also, would you also want to use the Alternate Crafting from Unchained as well?

I would be interested, veteran player of 11 years but never touched Kingmaker. Also new to organized play.

1 background skill per level (3 for rogues)

Good afternoon! Been trying to piece something together while I'm working. I see the group needs a meat shield, so I built an Antipaladin of Hanspur since he's my favorite Deity and also based in the River Kingdoms!

Hesmit Many-Scars

https://paizo.com/people/TimPetty

I tried to go based off of what rules you had listed. If I missed anything and you would like to continue just let me know! :)

Edit: Sorry I'm very new to Organized Play and the Paizo forums!

@TimPetty: a couple of things

Organized Play:
Unless you're using a looser definition ("We're organizing a game"), the official term Organized Play refers to using some more limiting rules of character creation, item acquisition, etc. for the Paizo sponsored Pathfinder Society

This game is not, as I understand it, subject to such rules nor providing any active benefit towards your standing with that roleplaying organization.

Antipaladin:
As a potential player in this game (no GM powers at all) I'll be honest and say an Antipaladin would completely be outside my comfort level.

While CE can be played low key as Chaotic can just mean anti-establishment/anarchistic, and as discussed Evil can vary from obvious to subtle, the Antipaladin is intended to be the champion of the extremes of these ideas.

While any LG character would disapprove of a bully heckling a smaller person and may seek law enforcement to break it up, a Paladin would actively insert themselves to resolve the situation by tenet.

Conversely, an Antipaladin, would by tenet and obligation, actively seek to distort attempts to bring order or good.

I have absolutely no idea how you would argue an Antipaladin having any interest in establishing any sort of institution let alone a system of government. In fact the inverse interest, breaking down or actively preventing the successful implementation of said institution is precisely what I would expect from an Antipaladin.

I really feel such a class being included would completely take this proposed "not every person is all good" campaign to more of a "the anointed Champion of Chaos has come from the North to destroy the Old World" feel if anyone understands that reference...

You're obviously able to submit any character you wish and be selected by the GM, but I really struggle to understand how such a character would be involved in this AP whatsoever except as an antagonist. Unlike many adventure starts, this is one of choice and opportunity not say, like Serpent's Skull which is entirely chance and circumstance bringing the heroes together.

Should get my Bard built tonight

What's the timeline for this, can I ask? How soon should we make sure to have our characters ready by, if there's a deadline in mind? I'm having a bit of a crowded week. X3

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

So racewise, would Aasimar be allowed?

Pretty certain Jan 30 was stated?

Which is good. I may need to rework my Alchemist concept a bit. Been struggling to find the right feel for my original idea within the archetypes available. Might need to tweak Tibold’s motivation and methods slightly to accommodate.

@pinvendor:

[Emphasis mine] I guess it all boils down to the player’s portrayal of that intent. For me, I see a class as a mechanical framework, and I personally wouldn’t feel constrained to play an Antipaladin as very devout, very dedicated or even very evil, and play up the more chaotic application. I tried playing in an already established Way of the Wicked with an incoming character, but eventually felt quietly icky about the whole thing, and luckily for me the whole thing collapsed in a heap so I was saved an untimely exit.

I know Paladin threads, falling paladins, Squealy Nord kicking Antipaladins et al are a hot button issue, but for me I try not to let the intent color my portrayal. I can see that some people/GMs might apply incredibly rigorous standards to these things, but I find a more elastic approach allows for more interesting ideas and party cohesion. It would definitely be no fun if one of the characters was actively not trying to help establish something as broad and structured as a nation-state.

Back from a business trip, so I don't have to post from my phone anymore.

Deadline was 30 January, I was hoping to allow another week for a few more characters to apply. I was going to take up to six, and this allows me to keep the game going after some attrition. I have not rerecruited before, but my new thoughts are if a game drops to three, I can recruit 3 more characters again and we can jump back in at six.

I will look at alternate crafting and the downtime rules--I think they work well with pathfinder.

TimPetty -- I think the antipaladin you have created looks good. My thoughts are your diety is CN and has CN core values which you need to at least follow to stay an antipaladin. Just as a bunch of CN worshippers of Besmara should be able to run a pirate ship, you and your goals to follow Hanspur can help run a kingdom. In many ways, I think a CE antipaladin following a CN diety is "less scary" than a CE character that is free to "follow their heart" This is not PFS, so no credit. PFS I think allows you to go through APs now and get credit, and I have enjoyed PFS scenarios on these boards. If you want to run with the same group for an extended time, joining an AP like this is the way to do it.

Aasimar will be allowed. I look forward to the bard Mark.

Last thoughts--if we have six solid characters by January 30 we will go. pinvendor, Elfriede and Mark Thomas are in and can jump into the discussion thread. I hope three more will join them soon. I have tried to put most of the character requirements in the campaign tab.

And, TimPetty, you are good to put the antipaladin in an alias and join the discussion thread. Just so you know, creating an alias was one of the hardest things for me to learn, but you go to the my account tab to get to a list of aliases and the add alias button.

Make a backstory and show us why your are in southern Brevoy at Greatwall, peek in the first gameplay post to see the opening scene.

And this is not because Tweeter and the Monkey Man is an awesome song.

This will be the first gameplay scene setter.

Greatwall was the name used to describe the southern border keep placed strategically on the Western Shore of the East Sellen River as the river flowed out of Brevoy. The river kingdoms were a wild place, and Greatwall was a keep that made sure the wild elements stayed out of the precious lands controlled by House Lebeda. The East Sellen River was a very important trade artery, and Greatwall was a stronghold built to ensure it stayed protected.

You think of your future in Greatwall, and before your summons, it was fairly bleak. Perhaps you were one of the original farmers and watched it transform into a war-forged stronghold. Maybe you were a deserter or soldier who spent his term and ended up here. Maybe you arrived on one of the major merchant caravans that still passed through the trade routes to the east. Although war makes trading dangerous, it also makes it profitable. Maybe you were part of the numerous contingent of Abadar or from a small Erastil shrine. Could you have been sent to further House Lebeda's interest in maintaining control of this vital trade route?

Hanspur was the diety nobody liked to talk about around Greatwall. Rumor has it the river traders would drown things to make sure their run through the dangerous lands would be successful. Sometimes these things were people, and it was rumored that Hanspur himself had taken an interest in the river kingdoms personally. One thing that was for sure, he wouldn't want the wild and chaotic riverlands turned into another Brevoy.

Considering inviting characters from the other thread to participate to get us up to 6. I hate to disappoint people that work on a good character, how many recruitments have 15 point buy?

I might have time to work on my Magus this weekend. HeroLab is not cooperating with all the choices I hoped.

I have an idea:

So what? Says the tall hard looking mercenary

Yeah Mr. Inquistior, I worship the Lord in Iron, and the Lady in Shadows and I like getting paid. Which you didnt, and yes, I just killed that Schir by trashtalking it, in fluent Abyssal, into charging straight at my Bardiche. Saving my arse and yours. And now you threaten me to repent or else? S~@* another Schir!

The inquisitor turned

Idiot The hard looking merc said as she removed his Bardiche from the inquisitors back.

May as well take his stuff in lieu of payment. And should probably bugger off further south. F*+%ing do gooders... I guess River Kingdoms are nice this time of the year? I like me some anarchy.

That’s an into!

I have an idea, but i'm holidng it for now; the stated deadline is the 30th, I have bandwidth for maybe 1 more active campaign, and I'm in 3 recruitments already...

Saoirse Oparaeal is my Aasimar Demogogue Bard btw

1 person marked this as a favorite.

And here is my (mightypions) submission.

Mechanically, Half Orc Bloodrager with combat reflexes and a reach weapon. Is it old? Yes. Does it work? Oh yes!
15 point buy and no feat tax rules makes it a bit harder to come up with cunning builds.

He is CN albeit trending CE, he does abide by his own mercenary code which is written out in his profile.

He mostly worships Nocticula because of a) her large Demon Lord kill count and b) his Abyssal Grandma (Gramps got captured by Demons, and had a surprisingly long winning streak in an Abyssal arena, buying himself his freedom eventually) showed up and well, was pretty insistent on a partial conversion.
@GM feel free to decide what his Grandma is and how if at all she interacts with the plot. In an evil campaign, direct sources of corruption for benefits are always fun.

I will risk bringing up a controversial subject, CR balance. Kingmaker explicitly warns that the sandbox nature may make encounters possibly more difficult and not CR balanced depending on the luck of exploration picks. GMs are instructed to warn players when they are going into dangerous areas they should leave for later. I will keep railroading to a minimum while trying to avoid allowing either group to jump in way over their head.

Many 1E pathfinder groups I have run seem determined to fight things out despite all odds. Kingmaker encourages subtle clues to indicate a high CR encounter like Keep out Signs with skull and crossbones.

Five days to go!!

Heh, running away is good! How often have I ran? So, once, I was just doing scouting in the worldwound. And what do I see, 3 insanely attractive women bathing in a Geysir. Like, a scorching hot Geyser, and absolutely enjoying it. Our scout actually walked up to them, and joined them in the bath. I think he died happy. I buggered the f$*~ out of there, not fighting 3 Succubi, any of them could easily kill me with a touch.
That the scout died pretty much instantly probably saved our assess because the girls didnt read his mind and figure out he was a scout. Look, if something you meet spontaneously wants to get intimate with you, its probably a really bad idea to accept.

He pauses, apparently having given zero expletives about the unlucky scout.

We ran from a mixed force of relatively slow Vermlecks and relatively fast schirs, both pursued, but this disorganized them, we could seperate their slow from the fast elements and defeat them in detail. Yeah, tactics, they work!

Third time I ran was from the Mendevian inquisition. Wearing the breastplate of one of theirs, which I yoinked in lieu of his payment, was a bad idea, so I ran, pawned the breastplate off to some chelish merc and buggered off. Effing do gooders.

Wouldn't mind making an evil character wouldn't mind making an evil character

I would like to present, Brightberry!. While not a 'bad guy' he does not actually consider himself a guy of any sort. Men are tools to use to accomplish his ultimate goal. Return nature to nature. To do this, Brighterry needs coin to create more leshies and other plant creatures. This means becoming an adventurer and cooperating with fleshbags.

He began an adventure not too long ago that was dropped, so I will need to adjust him back to 1st level. Other tweaks will need to be made as well to fit, but that is easy to do. The adventure that we dropped was to be a post-kigmaker adventure.

Okay, I think that Brightberry has been updated for this campaign.

I'm gonna bow out of consideration for now! I haven't had much time and I'm super rusty on PF1 these days, so I'd be better off leaving space for someone else.

Thanks for your inputs.
